Part of #1291, step 3a and 3b: the groundwork for Cancel and a progress bar. Nothing visible changes yet. Running tools off the UI thread, with Cancel and a progress bar in the Geoprocessing pane (3c and 3d), follows in later PRs.

What

  • analysis::control::Control: a cancel flag, plus a count of the items (rows, features) finished in the tool's current step.
    • analysis::run_with(id, inputs, params, &control) makes it the current control of the thread the tool runs on. A tool calls control::check() in its long loops without passing anything along.
    • The engine gets the same through gp::run_tool_with.
    • analysis::run, gp::run_tool and gp.run behave as before.
  • Parallel helpers (parallel.rs): for_each_row and try_map_on hand the control to their worker threads. Once it's cancelled, they stop after the rows or items in hand. They also count what they make. This covers viewshed, IDW, kriging and the buffers of Select by Distance.
  • The other capped tools from Analysis limits: fail gracefully on allocation, scale with the machine, and cancel long runs #1291 check it between features or rows:
    • kernel density;
    • the topology checks (overlaps, self-intersections, dangles, points not covered);
    • random points;
    • neural training and classification.
  • A cancelled run is always an error, whatever the tool returned: for example "IDW Interpolation was cancelled 37% of the way through its current step". A tool may stop early however suits it, and what it made by then is never taken as its result. The map stays as it was, and the run appears in the geoprocessing history as failed, with that message.

Not covered yet: external tools (GeoLibre, plugins). run hands them to their own runner, which doesn't see the control. A cancel takes effect once they finish, and their result is then discarded as cancelled. Passing the cancel on to their runners, and stopping in the middle of loading a tool's inputs, come with step 3c of #1291. Likewise, a single long library call such as the union of Buffer's dissolve can't be interrupted once it starts: it is checked for a cancel just before, and a cancel during it takes effect when it returns.

One difference from the issue text: the control is the running thread's current control, not an Inputs::cancelled() method. The parallel helpers never see the Inputs, so a method on it would have to be passed through every call.

Line endings: the first commit only converts crates/analysis/src/lib.rs from Windows to Unix line endings. It was the only file in the repository with them (from #1081), and cargo fmt converts it back on any edit anyway. Keeping that in its own commit leaves the real change readable and keeps blame useful.

Tests

  • Parallel helpers: on one thread and on four, a cancelled run stops after the rows in hand, returns Cancelled, and its count is right.
  • A real tool: an IDW run cancelled from another thread, once it has made some rows, stops well before the end, and its error says how far it got. A run cancelled before it starts never starts.
  • Engine: a cancelled idwInterpolation adds no layer and is kept in the history as a failed run with its message; the same run uncancelled adds its raster.
  • cargo xtask ci passes, and cargo check --target wasm32-unknown-unknown -p rustgis-analysis -p rustgis-engine with -D warnings is clean.

An independent review before opening found no bugs. Its points are addressed:

  • Line endings: the separate first commit.
  • Progress: items are now counted only once finished, and the message now names the current step.
  • A timing-sensitive test: it now uses a larger grid and a spinning watcher.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • Long-running analyses now report progress and can be cancelled, including during parallel processing.
    • Geoprocessing runs support cancellation. Cancelled runs return an error and include a progress percentage when available.
  • Bug Fixes

    • Cancelled analyses stop processing and no longer report success. Cancellation is handled before and during runs, while uninterrupted runs continue normally.

Low. The PR says "A run cancelled before it starts never starts", but run_with still resolves the parameters and enters the tool. The tool's setup runs, and only its first check stops the rows. The idwInterpolation test expects a "0% of the way through" message, which confirms the tool reached begin(). (The Geoprocessing path also reads its inputs in map_inputs before this point.)

Either the wording changes, or the run returns before it starts:

Suggested change
pub fn run_with(id: &str, inputs: &dyn Inputs, params: &Value, control: &std::sync::Arc<control::Control>) -> Result<ToolResult, String> {
pub fn run_with(id: &str, inputs: &dyn Inputs, params: &Value, control: &std::sync::Arc<control::Control>) -> Result<ToolResult, String> {
if control.is_cancelled() {
return Err(format!("{} was cancelled before it started", tool(id).map_or(id, |t| t.name)));
}
let _current = control::install(Some(control.clone()));
let res = run(id, inputs, params);

If you take the suggestion, the a_tool_cancelled_while_it_runs_stops_with_how_far_it_came test's first assertion must expect the new message, since the progress percentage is no longer in it.

Fixed in f4e775a: run_with now returns at once for a control that's already cancelled, saying "… was cancelled before it started", without entering the tool. The test now expects that message.

Code review

I checked the cancel flag and progress plumbing in control.rs, the parallel helpers, the topology, density, neural, rasterops and kriging call sites, the engine run_tool_with path, and the new tests. The for_each_row and try_map signature changes compile against their callers as far as I can read them. I found no crash, panic, unsafe, or silent-data-loss issue. Every cancelled run returns an error, and partial output is discarded. I did not compile or run the tests, since I have no shell here.

Bugs

  • Cancelled-before-start is not "never starts". run_with still resolves parameters and enters the tool, which runs its setup before the first check. The PR text and the test name both overstate this. Inline comment posted on crates/analysis/src/lib.rs:424. Low severity, high confidence on the behaviour.
  • Progress is never set for Select by Distance buffers. buffers_on and the try_map call in tools.rs never call begin(), so progress() stays None and the cancel message has no percentage. Any advance in such a run also counts against a stale total from an earlier step. Medium confidence that it matters, low severity.

Security

  • None found. The change adds no I/O, parsing, or external input handling.

Performance

  • Per-item advance and check calls in the sequential try_map_on path add a thread-local lookup and an atomic per item. This is negligible next to buffer and geometry work. Batch granularity (BATCH = 16) bounds cancel latency. No concern.

Quality

  • The CANCELLED doc comment at control.rs:46-47 says it is what run_with reports. It is not; run_with replaces it with "X was cancelled …". Wording only, so it can wait for the release quality pass.
  • A cancel arriving just after a tool finishes yields "X was cancelled 100% of the way through". This is by design, but the wording reads oddly.
  • tools.rs a_tool_cancelled_while_it_runs… relies on the IDW run lasting long enough for the watcher to see progress. On a fast many-core machine it may finish first, and then the test fails rather than hangs. Low confidence; consider a larger grid or asserting the run was still in progress.

AGENTS.md

  • Assets, layering, wasm, translation and panic rules look respected. The lib.rs diff is a whole-file rewrite from the line-ending change; that is the separate commit the PR describes, so it is not a problem here. No dependencies changed.

Prior review concerns

  • No prior threads on this PR, so nothing was left out as already raised.

Follow-up Comments

Minor follow-up Check cancellation while inputs load in runtoolwith.

791-792: Minor · Performance & Scalability · Poor tradeoff

Check cancellation while inputs load in run_tool_with.

run_tool_with loads inputs in map_inputs before run_with installs the control. A cancel set during that load is not observed until loading finishes. Large streamed layers and local vector files can make this load slow. Pass the control into the input loading and check it between loads, so a cancel stops the load early.

cancellation is requested. Preserve the existing run_with control handling after
inputs are loaded.
Minor follow-up Record each item before the cancellation check, so a cancelled step reports the items already finis…

107-115: Minor · Functional Correctness · Low value

Record each item before the cancellation check, so a cancelled step reports the items already finished.

In the indexed loops, the cancellation check runs before reached(i). When cancellation is detected at iteration i, the stored count is still i-1, but items 0..i have finished. The cancelled error reports this stale count. For example, with 3 rows, if row 0 finishes and cancellation is detected at row 1, the error reports 0 of 3 completed rows.

The same ordering appears in density.rs, network.rs (including random_points), neural.rs, and topology.rs. Moving reached(i) above the check in each loop reports the finished count at the point of cancellation. Its value is i, which is the number of finished items. The parallel helpers' post-work advance calls are not affected.

Suggested fix
 for (i, &(p, wgt)) in points.iter().enumerate() {
-    if crate::control::cancelled() {
-        return;
-    }
     crate::control::reached(i);
+    if crate::control::cancelled() {
+        return;
+    }

Apply the same reordering to the other indexed loops listed above.

Leave parallel helpers’ post-work `advance` calls unchanged.

It came in with Windows line endings in opengeos#1081, the only file in the
repository that has them; cargo fmt turns them back to Unix ones on any edit.
No change but the line endings.

…ess (opengeos#1291)

Step 3a and 3b of opengeos#1291: the plumbing for Cancel and a progress bar, used by
nothing visible yet.

- `analysis::control::Control`: a cancel flag and a count of the items (rows,
  features) done of the tool's current step. `analysis::run_with` makes it the
  current one of the thread the tool runs on, so a tool checks it in its long
  loops without passing it along; `gp::run_tool_with` does the same in the
  engine. `analysis::run` and `gp.run` are unchanged.
- The parallel helpers hand it to their worker threads, stop after the rows or
  items in hand once it is cancelled, and count what they make: viewshed, IDW,
  kriging and the buffers of Select by Distance.
- The other capped tools check it between features or rows: kernel density,
  the topology checks, random points, and neural training and classification.
- A run cancelled before it returns is an error saying how far its current step
  came, whatever the tool gave back, so what a tool made by then is never taken
  for its result; it is kept in the geoprocessing history as a failed run.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…s count their progress

From the review of opengeos#1311:
- `run_with` returns at once for a control already cancelled, saying the
  tool was cancelled before it started, instead of entering the tool.
- Buffer, Select by Distance and the geodesic buffers set their total before
  counting, so a cancelled one says how far it came and a finished one shows
  all its features done, never a total left from an earlier step.

Thanks for the reviews. I rebased onto main, which brings in #1305 (Buffer storage budget), #1274 and #1289; the only conflict was two tests appended at the same place.

Fixed (f4e775a):

  • A run cancelled before it starts now returns at once ("… was cancelled before it started") and doesn't enter the tool.
  • Progress for Select by Distance and the buffers: Buffer, Select by Distance and the geodesic buffers now call begin before counting. They fit fix(analysis): budget buffer storage separately from overlay complexity #1305's batches: one begin before the batch loop, then each try_map counts its items. A new test checks that a finished Buffer run counts all its features. So a cancel says how far the run got, and no total from an earlier step is reused.

Already addressed: the IDW cancel test already uses a 400 × 400 grid and a watcher that spins instead of sleeping (both in the first push), so the run can't finish before the cancel lands.

CodeRabbit, cancelling while inputs load (map_inputs): with the fix above, a cancel set during loading stops the run as soon as loading ends, before the tool starts. Stopping in the middle of loading belongs to step 3c of #1291, which moves the input loading off the UI thread anyway; I'll handle it there.

Release quality pass:

  • the CANCELLED doc comment;
  • the "100% of the way through" wording for a cancel that lands just after a tool finishes;
  • a check() in Select by Distance's last selection loop.

These are wording and polish, not bugs, so I'm leaving them for the release quality pass.

let tool = tool_id(tool).unwrap_or(tool).to_string();
let params = params.clone();
let t0 = now_ms();
let inputs = map_inputs(s, rustgis_analysis::tool(&tool), &params)?;

Medium (re-raising the earlier thread with new evidence). The earlier reply fixed run_with only. This engine path still reads inputs before run_with is reached: map_inputs calls rustgis_data::io::read_path for each VectorLayers name that isn't a layer, and streamed_inputs loads the rest. So a run cancelled before it starts still does its file I/O and can fail on a bad path before the cancel is seen. That contradicts "A run cancelled before it starts never starts" for gp.run, the CLI and the app.

Suggested fix: check control.is_cancelled() at the top of run_tool_with, before map_inputs. It should record the same "… was cancelled before it started" failure in the history as the run path does, so the history stays consistent. The engine test should cover a cancelled run whose input is a missing file path, to show that nothing is read.

Confidence: high that the I/O happens before the check (lines 510–516 of map_inputs).

Fixed in 7bdaeb0: run_tool_with checks the control before map_inputs, so a run cancelled before it starts reads nothing. It is recorded in the history as "… was cancelled before it started", the same as the analysis path. The engine test now runs a cancelled merge whose inputs include a missing file and checks that it fails with the cancel message, not a read error.

Low–medium (CI, confidence about 75%). CI runs cargo clippy --workspace --all-targets -- -D warnings, so test code is linted too. done >= 100 && done <= made as u64 matches clippy's default-on manual_range_contains lint, which would fail the build.

This one does not fire: cargo clippy --workspace --all-targets -- -D warnings passes locally and in CI's lint step. manual_range_contains does not seem to match a comparison that sits inside a longer && chain like this one. Left as it is.

Code review

Bugs

  • Medium: gp.run still reads inputs before the cancel check. run_tool_with calls map_inputs (read_path for file-path layers, streamed_inputs) before run_with, so a run cancelled before it starts still does I/O. The earlier fix covered run_with only. Re-raised inline at crates/engine/src/cmd/gp.rs:791 with new evidence. Confidence: high.
  • Low: geodesic_buffers (crates/analysis/src/geodesic.rs:135-137) calls the limited path with unwrap_or_default(). Once the control can cancel it, a cancelled call returns an empty list instead of an error, and the caller keeps computing. The user still sees an error because run_with overrides the result, and the only callers are in tests. Confidence: medium.

Security

  • No issues found in the changed code. No new unsafe, no unchecked input, no secrets.

Performance

  • Low: try_map_on (crates/analysis/src/parallel.rs) calls control::advance(1) per item, so up to 16 threads contend on one shared AtomicU64 for cheap items. for_each_row advances per batch, which is the better pattern. Confidence: medium.

Quality

  • Low–medium (CI): parallel.rs:425 trips clippy::manual_range_contains under --all-targets -D warnings. Suggestion posted inline. Confidence: about 75%.
  • Nit: The doc on CANCELLED in crates/analysis/src/control.rs:47-48 says it is what run_with reports. run_with formats its own message and never returns that string, so the doc is wrong.
  • Nit: The new progress counting in topology, neural, density and network.rs has no tests that cancel those tools. Only the parallel helpers, IDW and buffer have coverage.
  • Design gap (not in the PR text): run_with never passes the control to external tools (GeoLibre, plugins). run dispatches them to their runner untouched. Cancel does nothing until they finish, and then the result is discarded as an error. Worth stating in the PR or the docs. Confidence: high.

AGENTS.md

  • No unwrap, expect, panic! or unsafe in non-test code. clippy.toml allows them in tests.
  • Silent loss: cancelled runs are always an error, as the rule requires, and the history records them.
  • Wasm: control.rs uses only thread_local and atomics. The new test uses std::time, which is test-only.
  • Translation: the new error strings are not wrapped in tl!. Existing analysis-crate errors are plain English too, so I left this alone.

Prior review threads: 1 earlier thread left alone. Its run_with concern was fixed in f4e775a, so I did not repost it. The engine-path gap in that thread is re-raised above with new evidence.

Verified compile-level points by reading the code, not by building: every ? on a Cancelled has a From impl for String or &'static str, and all call sites of for_each_row handle the new Result.

Minor follow-up Add a cancellation check to the Select by Location target-feature loop.

2433-2433: 🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Add a cancellation check to the Select by Location target-feature loop.

The target-feature scan in select_by_location_with_work_limit runs over every feature in ds.features without calling control::check(). A cancel that arrives during the scan is honored only after the scan finishes. Add crate::control::check()?; at the top of the for (r, feature) loop so the tool stops between features, as control.rs documents for long loops.

Minor follow-up Clear progress before the dissolve union.

151-151: 🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | 💤 Low value

Clear progress before the dissolve union.

In the dissolve branch of Buffer, every buffer is counted before union_all runs. The count therefore reaches its total while the union is still running, and the union does not count its work. If a cancel arrives during the union, the error reports "100% of the way through its current step."

Reset the count before the union. A total of 0 makes progress() return None, so the message becomes "was cancelled":

         if !all.is_empty() {
             out.fields.clear();
+            crate::control::begin(0);
             let u = union_all(all.iter().flat_map(|m| m.0.iter()));
Why this line

begin(0) ends the buffer step's count. progress() returns None for a zero total, and run_with then uses the "was cancelled" message. This matches the progress doc, which returns None for work that is not counted.

In the dissolve branch of Buffer, reset the progress count immediately before
union_all so the union runs as uncounted work and cancellation does not report

Nitpick Compare the existing layer contents, not only the layer count.

23716-23716: 📐 Maintainability & Code Quality | 🔵 Trivial | ⚡ Quick win

Compare the existing layer contents, not only the layer count.

The test name says a cancelled run leaves the map as it was. Its assertions check only the layer count and the last gp_history entry. An edit to an existing layer on the cancelled path would pass both checks. The cancelled error reaches the Err branch of apply, which takes &mut Session. That branch currently only records history. A later change there could edit a layer without failing the test.

🧪 Suggested test change
     let layers = s.map().layers.len();
+    let before = serde_json::to_value(&s.map().layers).unwrap();
     let control = rustgis_analysis::control::Control::new();
     control.cancel();
     let params = json!({"input": "Cities", "field": "pop_max", "pixelSize": 5.0});
     let e = crate::cmd::gp::run_tool_with(&mut s, "idwInterpolation", &params, &control).err().unwrap_or_default();
     assert!(e.starts_with("IDW Interpolation was cancelled"), "{e}");
     assert_eq!(s.map().layers.len(), layers, "nothing was added");
+    assert_eq!(serde_json::to_value(&s.map().layers).unwrap(), before, "no existing layer changed");

Layer derives Serialize but not PartialEq, so the comparison uses serde_json::Value.

Comment thread crates/analysis/src/lib.rs Resolved
From the second review of opengeos#1311:
- `gp::run_tool_with` checks the control before it reads the tool's inputs
  (files named among its layers, streamed layers), and keeps the cancelled run
  in the history as the analysis path does.
- `try_map_on` counts its progress a batch at a time on its threads, rather
  than every thread adding to the shared count for each item.

Second round, in 7bdaeb0:

  • gp.run read its inputs before the cancel check (medium): fixed. See the inline reply.
  • try_map_on's shared count: the worker threads now add to it a batch at a time instead of after every item. A batch is counted only when all its items succeeded, so the total stays exact.
  • External tools (GeoLibre, plugins) not seeing the control: correct. The PR description now says so. A cancel takes effect once they finish, and their result is then discarded. Passing the cancel on to their runners belongs with step 3c of Analysis limits: fail gracefully on allocation, scale with the machine, and cancel long runs #1291.
  • clippy::manual_range_contains: doesn't fire; see the inline reply.

Release quality pass: these are wording, extra tests or test-only code, not bugs, so I'm leaving them for the release quality pass.

  • geodesic_buffers (test-only callers) returning an empty list when cancelled. run_with turns any cancelled run into an error, so nothing partial is used.
  • The wrong doc comment on CANCELLED.
  • Cancel tests for topology, neural, density and random points.

Code review

No bugs or security issues found in the changed lines. I posted no inline comments because nothing reaches the bar for one. The two earlier review findings that touched correctness are fixed in the diff: run_with and run_tool_with both return before reading inputs or entering the tool when already cancelled.

Bugs: none found (high confidence). I checked:

  • Cancel-before-start in both run_with and run_tool_with.
  • Thread-local install and restore, including nested runs and panics.
  • Cancellation in the single-thread and multi-thread paths of for_each_row and try_map_on, and which error is returned.
  • Progress accounting. The two accumulate_density calls sit in exclusive match arms, and buffers_on/begin run once per run, so progress does not reset mid-run.

Security: none. No new parsing or I/O; the cancel flag is local.

Performance:

  • Low (about 50% confidence): in the dissolve buffer path (crates/analysis/src/tools.rs around lines 1353–1360), nothing checks for cancellation between the buffers finishing and union_all. A Cancel during the union waits until it ends, and a cancel that lands there reports "100% of the way through". A control::check()? before the union would narrow this, but a long union needs checks inside it to be fully responsive.

Quality (minor, grouped):

  • control::install returns a guard that must be bound. let _ = install(…) drops it at once and silently does nothing. Consider #[must_use] on install.
  • Control::new() returns Arc<Control>, while Control also derives Default and returns a bare value. The name is surprising.
  • No cancel tests cover kernel density, random points, neural train/classify, or the topology checks. Only IDW, buffer, the parallel helpers and the engine path are exercised. This is a test-coverage point for the quality pass.

AGENTS.md: compliant as far as I can read.

  • No unwrap, expect, panic or unsafe in non-test code.
  • Wasm-safe: no std::time in non-test code; thread_local! is fine; threads come only from the existing parallel path.
  • Layering is unchanged; analysis depends only on std.
  • Cancellation surfaces as an error in the history, consistent with "never silent".
  • The new error strings are not wrapped in tl!. The analysis crate has no i18n precedent (its existing errors use plain format!), so I did not flag them.

Earlier review threads: I left 4 earlier concerns alone.

  • Two (run_with before-start, and the engine before-start path reading inputs) are fixed in the diff and verified.
  • One (clippy manual_range_contains on the done assertion) I agree does not fire: the comparison is not a direct operand of the && pair.
  • One (coderabbitai: run_with should call control::begin(0) so a reused Control does not report a stale count) is still open and unchanged in the code. Not re-raised.

Nitpick Add a test for cancellation during the final batch of trymapon.

177-177: Trivial · Maintainability & Code Quality · Low value

Add a test for cancellation during the final batch of try_map_on.

try_map_on checks for cancellation only at the top of each batch (crates/analysis/src/parallel.rs:163-166). A cancel that arrives while the last batch runs is not checked, so try_map_on returns Ok(made) (parallel.rs:208-209). The existing cancellation tests cancel at item 99 of 5,000 (parallel.rs:401-440), so no test covers this path. run_with discards the result when the control is cancelled (crates/analysis/src/lib.rs:431-440), so the user-visible outcome is still an error. A test for this path can document the boundary: cancel on the last item and assert the run-level error, or pin try_map_on's behavior explicitly. Do not require Err(Cancelled) from try_map_on without first changing its contract.

Add a cancellation-boundary test alongside the existing cancellation tests for
try_map_on, canceling during its final batch and verifying that run_with returns
the user-visible cancellation error. Keep try_map_on’s existing return behavior
unchanged; do not require it to return Err(Cancelled).
Nitpick Check the missing path in the uncancelled merge error.

23724-23724: Trivial · Maintainability & Code Quality · Quick win

Check the missing path in the uncancelled merge error.

The uncancelled merge assertion uses is_err(), which passes for any error. It does not show that the missing file was read, because a later missing-layer error also passes. For a read failure, map_inputs returns "{name}: {e}", so the error starts with the input path. Assert that prefix instead.

🧪 Suggested fix
-    assert!(crate::cmd::gp::run_tool(&mut s, "merge", &merge).is_err(), "not cancelled, the missing file is read");
+    let e = crate::cmd::gp::run_tool(&mut s, "merge", &merge).err().unwrap_or_default();
+    assert!(e.starts_with(&missing.display().to_string()), "{e}");

Strengthen the uncancelled merge check around `run_tool`: capture its error and
assert that it starts with the missing input path, rather than accepting any
error with `is_err()`. Preserve the existing cancellation assertion and use the
test’s `missing` path to identify the expected read failure.

…ion stops between features

From CodeRabbit's review of opengeos#1311:
- `run_with` starts each run with no count, so a control used before doesn't
  show that run's progress for a tool that doesn't count.
- Buffer with dissolve ends the buffers' count before the union, which isn't
  counted, so a cancel during the union doesn't say "100% of the way".
- Select by Location checks the control between the features it selects from,
  and counts them.
- The engine test compares the layers before and after a cancelled run, and
  checks that the uncancelled merge fails on the missing file itself.

@coderabbitai Thanks. Your two reviews, addressed in ae43817:

  • Stale progress on a reused control: fixed. See the inline reply.
  • Buffer with dissolve reaching 100% before the union: fixed as suggested. begin(0) runs before union_all, so a cancel during the union reports a plain "was cancelled", with no percentage.
  • Select by Location's feature loop: fixed. It calls check()? and counts each feature at the top of the loop, so it stops between features.
  • Engine test, comparing layer contents: done. The test now compares serde_json::to_value(&s.map().layers) before and after the cancelled run.
  • Engine test, the merge error: done. The uncancelled merge must now fail with an error starting with the missing path.
  • A boundary test for a cancel in try_map_on's last batch: the behaviour is already right, since run_with turns any cancelled run into an error. It's an extra test for code that works, so I'm leaving it for the release quality pass.

Low (confidence about 80%), a cancel gap rather than a wrong result. The dissolve path runs union_all over every buffer after control::begin(0), and nothing in that call checks the flag. For a large dissolve the union can take a long time, so a Cancel press goes unnoticed until it finishes, and only then does run_with report the cancel. The result is still correct, because run_with turns it into an error. The gap is latency, and the PR's stated goal is stopping a running tool at its next check.

The union is a single library call, so a per-feature check cannot be added around it without restructuring. Either split it into chunks that check control::check()? between them, or note this step as not cancellable in the PR text, next to the external-tools caveat.

Right, union_all is one library call, and it can't be interrupted without restructuring it. Since 49cd9b4 the dissolve branch checks for a cancel just before the union. The PR description now says that a long single call like this takes a cancel only once it returns.

Code review

I read the full diff, the staged PR metadata and prior threads, and the call sites of for_each_row, try_map/try_map_on, run_with and run_tool_with. I found no correctness bugs, crash paths or silent data loss. The four earlier threads are all addressed in the current code, so I did not re-raise them.

Bugs

  • None found. Checked: nested install and restore, the worker-thread control hand-off in parallel.rs, error propagation through ? into String and &'static str, the cancelled-before-start pre-checks in run_with and run_tool_with, and the progress counts (clamped, and reset by begin).

Security

  • None found. The change adds no input parsing or I/O.

Performance

  • Low: control::cancelled() and reached/advance run per row or item through a thread-local. This is negligible next to the work in each loop.

Quality (nits, grouped; per AGENTS.md these can wait for the release quality pass)

  • Low: the CANCELLED doc in control.rs says it is what run_with reports. run_with never returns it. It only feeds the From<Cancelled> impls and one test. Reword the doc.
  • Low: the "was cancelled before it started" check is duplicated in analysis::run_with and engine::run_tool_with. The fallback name also differs: the tool id in analysis, "Tool" in the engine. A shared helper would keep them in step.
  • Low: run_with takes &Arc<Control> but only clones it. This is acceptable, but a short comment saying why would help.

AGENTS.md

  • No violations found. Analysis error strings stay English, which matches the existing analysis precedent; the engine has no i18n layer. Nothing new is unwrap/panic/unsafe in non-test code. Layering holds. Every new long loop either checks the control or sits in a function that already does.

Confidence and scope

  • Inline comment posted on crates/analysis/src/tools.rs:1361: the dissolve union (union_all) is not cancellable, so a Cancel press waits for it to finish. Low severity, confidence about 80%.
  • Claims I could not check: the PR says the tests pass and that the wasm build is clean. I did not build or run anything, since this environment has no build access. Read-only review only.
  • Prior threads: 4 earlier concerns, all resolved in code. I left them alone.

Minor follow-up Check cancellation inside the candidate traversal.

Check cancellation inside the candidate traversal.

Cancellation is checked once per input feature. ExtentIndex::any_candidate and its predicate run to completion for that feature. For Select by Distance with many overlapping selectors, cancellation waits for that traversal. Add a periodic cancellation check inside the candidate predicate or traversal.

Cover the dissolve progress reset in a test.

The buffer progress test runs without dissolve, so the reset at crates/analysis/src/tools.rs:1361 never runs under test. No test asserts progress for a dissolve buffer. Removing the reset would not fail a test. A short after-run assertion detects its removal.

Nitpick Add an engine test that cancels the IDW run while it executes.

23715-23718: 🎯 Functional Correctness | 🔵 Trivial | ⚡ Quick win

Add an engine test that cancels the IDW run while it executes.

The new test cancels the control before run_tool_with starts. run_tool_with returns at its pre-start check, so the tool, run_with, and the post-run cancellation check never run. The mid-run path that discards a completed result has no engine-level test.

Add a test that cancels the IDW run during execution. For example, cancel from another thread once progress reports a completed item. The test can then assert that the error starts with IDW Interpolation was cancelled, that the layer count and layer contents are unchanged, and that the last history entry is a failed record with that error. The pre-start assertions already cover the history and layer checks, so the new test should cover only the mid-run path.

Deferring the final-batch cancellation test to the release quality pass is reasonable. run_with rejects a cancelled run, so the missing test alone does not establish a runtime defect.

Would you like a follow-up issue for that boundary test?

From the fourth review round of opengeos#1311:
- A run that finishes uncancelled marks its last counted step all done, so a
  loop that counts each item as it reaches it no longer ends one short
  (Select by Location, kernel density, the topology checks, random points,
  neural training and classification).
- Buffer with dissolve checks the control before the union, which can't be
  interrupted once it starts.
- The buffer progress test covers dissolve (the union isn't counted) and a
  Select by Location run (every feature counted at the end).

Round four, in 49cd9b4:

  • A finished run's count is now complete. Loops that count with reached used to end one short. Now a run that finishes uncancelled and succeeds is marked complete, and a failed run stays where it stopped.
  • Buffer with dissolve checks for a cancel before the union.
  • The test covers both: a Select by Location run now ends at (40, 40), and a dissolved buffer at None.
  • The union can't be interrupted. The PR description now says so.

@coderabbitai, your follow-up suggestion to check inside ExtentIndex::any_candidate: the per-feature check matches the other tools. The candidate search for one feature is already capped by Select by Location's selector-check budget, so a cancel waits at most for one feature's search. I'm leaving finer checks for the release quality pass.

Release quality pass: these are wording and style, not bugs.

  • the CANCELLED doc comment;
  • the "was cancelled before it started" check, which appears in both run_with and run_tool_with and should become one shared helper;
  • a comment on why run_with takes an Arc.

Low (coverage claim, confidence about 85%). This cancel check can't fire yet. random_points is called only from crates/engine/src/cmd/workflows.rs (lines 771 and 783), which doesn't go through run_with, so no live Control is ever installed on that path. The PR body lists random points among the tools that "check it", and the same applies to the topology checks (topology.rs, called from design.rs) and to neural::train/classify (called from deeplearning.rs). Those callers never reach run_with, and gp::run_tool_with is the only production caller of it. Nothing is wrong at runtime, since this PR changes no visible behaviour, but the description overstates what can be cancelled. Either route these through a tool that runs under run_with, or say in the PR text that they're covered in step 3c.

Code review

Bugs

  • Cancel checks in topology, random points and neural code can't fire yet. The PR text says these tools check for cancel, but their callers (design.rs, workflows.rs, deeplearning.rs) never reach run_with. Nothing changes at runtime today, but the PR text overstates coverage. Posted inline on crates/analysis/src/network.rs:255. Confidence about 85%.
  • geodesic::geodesic_buffers now swallows a cancel. It is geodesic_buffers_with_limit(...).unwrap_or_default() (crates/analysis/src/geodesic.rs:136), so a cancelled run would return empty buffers. The run still ends as an error because run_with checks the flag afterwards, so nothing is silent overall. No tool calls this function under a control today. Confidence about 60%.

Security

  • No issues found. The diff adds no parsing, I/O or unsafe code, and no unwrap/expect/panic in non-test code.

Performance

  • No material issues. The per-item TLS access and atomic counters are negligible next to the kernel loops they sit in. The multi-thread paths stop at batch boundaries, as intended.

Quality (minor, grouped)

  • control.rs: cancelled(), begin, reached, advance and finish use CURRENT.with, which panics during thread teardown. Installed::drop uses try_with on purpose, so the two are inconsistent. Confidence about 50%.
  • tools.rs a_tool_cancelled_while_it_runs... depends on timing (the watcher must cancel before 400 rows finish). It should be stable, but could flake on a loaded runner. Confidence about 30%.
  • lib.rs is a whole-file rewrite (CRLF to LF) in the squashed diff. The PR keeps it in its own commit, which is fine. Reviewers may want --ignore-cr-at-eol or a .git-blame-ignore-revs entry.

AGENTS.md

  • Crash rules are met: every new fallible path returns an error, and the new tests cover both cancelled and clean runs.
  • Never-silent is met: a cancelled run always returns an error with its progress, and the history records it.
  • I found no wasm, layering or licence problems.

Earlier review threads

  • 7 threads already exist. Six are resolved or answered in the code (run_with pre-start check, map_inputs ordering in gp.rs, progress reset, final count, union check, and the dissolve-latency note). I left them alone.
  • The manual_range_contains clippy thread is disputed. I didn't re-raise it: the chained && form doesn't match that lint.
  • In total I left 7 earlier concerns alone and posted 1 new inline comment.

Follow-up Comments

Nitpick Cover the dissolved Buffer progress during the union.

6192-6192: Trivial · Maintainability & Code Quality · Poor tradeoff

Cover the dissolved Buffer progress during the union.

The dissolved-Buffer assertions at tools.rs:6185-6192 read control.progress() only after run_with returns. The current order is control::check(), then begin(0), then union_all. If begin(0) moved below union_all, the total would stay at 40 during the union. The later begin(0) would still reset the total to 0 before the test reads it, so the final assertion would still pass. No current assertion detects that ordering.

Polling from a second thread is unlikely to detect it reliably. The union has no interruption or synchronization point. The buffer fixture (40 points, 100 m) does not size the union to run long, while the IDW cancellation test sizes its workload deliberately so that a watcher can observe it. A short union can finish between polls.

A deterministic check needs an observation at the union boundary. That requires a small test seam, for example a test-only hook called immediately before union_all that records control.progress(). The current ordering is correct, so this is a coverage gap, not a production defect.

Remedy scope

No line-level patch is proposed. The observation seam's shape depends on how control and the tool entry points are exposed, and the inspected evidence does not establish that design.

Review comment at @crates/analysis/src/tools.rs at line 6192:
Add a deterministic test observation at the boundary immediately before
union_all in the dissolved-Buffer flow, and assert that control.progress() still
reflects the expected total before begin(0) resets it. Establish a suitable test
seam based on how control and the tool entry points are exposed; preserve the
current control::check(), begin(0), and union_all ordering.

@pick2510 Thanks for the updates in 49cd9b4e. The reported changes address the incomplete final count and the missing cancellation check before Buffer’s union. I have not independently verified the commit or run the tests in this reply.

Given the selector-check budget you describe, I accept deferring finer checks inside ExtentIndex::any_candidate. The per-feature check provides a bounded cancellation point. My suggestion does not establish a runtime defect.

The doc comment, shared pre-start check, and Arc explanation can remain in the release quality pass. Would you like a single follow-up issue for those deferred items?
