feat(models): run a model's tools off the frame on the desktop - #1487
Part of #1252 (Models and scripts, UI-thread track; #1291 step 3). Scripts follow in a PR of their own.
What changes
On the desktop, Run in ModelBuilder and in the Workflows pane's Models list no longer holds the window. The status bar shows Run Model, the current tool's progress and Cancel, and ModelBuilder says Running… until the run lands.
How
The same approach as Add Data and Load All in #1479: the work is done ahead on a thread, then the command runs here and takes it.
reads::read_ahead(s, "model.run", p) → workflows::model_ahead. On the thread, it builds a Session::new(project.clone()) copy, puts it in recording mode (Session::tools_ahead) and runs model.run there.
In recording mode, gp::run_tool_with records each tool's tool id, params, a Snapshot of what it read (and the view extent, if the tool asked for it), its result, its streamed full_ids and its time.
The app places the recording, then runs model.run on the frame as it always has.
gp::take_ahead hands a tool its recorded result only if same_read says the inputs are unchanged. It compares:
every layer's id, name, rows (shared Arc), fields, CRS, source, selection and definition query;
streamed sources by their opening, and raster pixels by Arc;
the tables, the environment, the projection, and the view if the tool asked for it.
The first mismatch drops the rest, and from there the tools run here.
Undo, history, the model report, notices and errors all come from the same code as before.
The copy stops at a tool that writes files, a plugin tool or a GeoLibre tool. Those tools, and every tool after them, run here, so nothing is written twice.
The copy shares the session's Diagnostics history, so its requests still show there.
If the copy panics, the model runs here instead.
readjob gains run_then with a Landed callback, so ModelBuilder and the Models list get the answer when the run lands, or the reason it never ran (cancelled, left). ModelBuilder marks nodes only if the canvas still holds the graph that ran.
A model run from a script, the command line or the assistant runs where the command runs. The web app is unchanged.
Known limits (in the docs)
A tool that runs here holds the window with the work limits of a run that can't be cancelled, as models always have. A model that finished ahead can still hit them, if an edit made during the run sends its tools to run here.
Files a trusted model's tools read by path aren't compared. A file rewritten during the run gives the result from what was read.
Tests
a_models_tools_run_ahead_are_taken_by_its_run:
both tools of a graph model are taken: same layers, history and one undo step;
a point added, or a selection made, meanwhile → the tools run here and use it;
cancel → error, nothing run;
models saved as steps;
a failing tool's error is taken;
a PMTiles step stops the copy: the file is written once, and later tools run here.
ModelBuilder: a run off the frame says Running…, then lands with every node ticked; a cancelled one shows only "Run failed: … was cancelled".
ci_fast.sh (fmt, clippy, all tests, xtask layers, the wasm build): pass, apart from the box-only failures known on main.
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Desktop model runs can prepare eligible tool results in the background and reuse them when inputs remain unchanged. If relevant project state changes, affected tools and subsequent tools run again against the updated state.
Desktop model runs can be cancelled, and the interface reports when a run completes or does not run. File-writing tools, plugin tools, and GeoLibre tools run in the foreground.
Documentation
Updated the ModelBuilder guide to explain desktop run behavior, how it differs from scripts, command-line, and assistant runs, and that changes to files read by path are not checked.
…eos#1252)
ModelBuilder's Run and Run in the Workflows pane's Models list now work
out the model's tools on a thread of their own, with the status bar's
progress and Cancel. The thread runs the model on a copy of the session
and records what each tool read and made; `model.run` then runs here as
it always has and takes each recorded result whose inputs are still the
same, so what it adds, says, logs and puts in Undo is unchanged. From
the first tool whose inputs changed, or a tool that writes files or is
a plugin's or GeoLibre's, the tools run here.
readjob gains a callback for the caller once the command lands, or
never runs, so ModelBuilder marks its nodes when the run lands.
It looks like this branch is under active development. To avoid overwhelming you with review comments due to an influx of new commits, CodeRabbit has automatically paused this review. You can configure this behavior by changing the reviews.auto_review.auto_pause_after_reviewed_commits setting.
Native desktop model runs prepare eligible tool results on a copied session and reuse matching results during live execution. The UI schedules model runs asynchronously and processes completion or not-run outcomes. WebAssembly continues to run models synchronously.

Summary
Prepare and reuse model tool results crates/analysis/src/control.rs, crates/engine/src/cmd/gp.rs, crates/engine/src/cmd/reads.rs, crates/engine/src/cmd/workflows.rs, crates/engine/src/lib.rs, crates/engine/src/tests.rs
Native read-ahead runs models on copied session state and records eligible tool results. Live execution reuses results only when tool parameters and relevant read state match. Tests cover reuse, changed inputs, cancellation, failures, and file-writing tools.
run_then carries callbacks through queued commands, cancellation, invalidation, and synchronous fallbacks. Landed distinguishes completed commands from commands that did not run.
Desktop model run UI and validation crates/ui-egui/src/analysispane.rs, crates/ui-egui/src/modelbuilder.rs, docs/user-guide/analysis.md
Desktop model runs use asynchronous completion handling. ModelBuilder tracks each queued run’s project and graph when processing its result. The user guide describes desktop and other run paths.

A rabbit watches tools run ahead, Then checks the snapshots as they thread. Matching results return to play, Stale ones yield to work today. The canvas waits; callbacks land, And carrots rest beside the command.
I found no crash, wasm, or layering problems. The copy-and-take design holds up on the paths I traced: take_ahead is order-checked and conservative, same_read covers the inputs the tools read, and cancel, left, and gone paths each call then once. I checked same_read against Inputs, streamed-edit refusal, Diagnostics sharing, and writes_files. No unwrap/expect in non-test code. There were no prior review threads.
Bugs
Second queued run loses its canvas marks (modelbuilder.rs:407, low severity, confidence high). mb.running is a single slot, so the first landing takes the second run's graph. Node marks and tool log lines for that run are dropped, while "Run finished." still shows. Fix: a FIFO VecDeque. Posted inline.
Security
None found. The copy keeps the trusted-model flag, writes_files covers SaveFile (the only write kind, per tools.rs), and file tools and plugin/GeoLibre tools stop the copy.
Performance
Low: each recorded tool takes a Snapshot::owned map clone, and the recorded results are cloned. Shallow Arc sharing keeps this acceptable, so no action is needed.
Quality
readjob.rs:81: the layer.loadAll "reading" early return drops then, which breaks the "called once" contract that run_then documents. No current caller passes then there, so this is latent (confidence medium).
readjob.rs:238: left_too builds "The 0 waiting…" when n == 0, and the value is never used. Restructure so it is built only when n > 0.
tests.rs (a_models_tools_run_ahead_are_taken_by_its_run): the temp dir is removed only at the end, so a failed assertion leaves it behind. The view-extent branch of take_ahead has no test.
Duplicated Some(landed) and model_ran wiring is fine as it is.
AGENTS.md
Missing screenshots (confidence high). The PR changes visible UI (the status bar's Run Model/Cancel, ModelBuilder's "Running…") but its body includes none. AGENTS.md requires before/after screenshots for changed UI.
Silent fallback (readjob.rs:261, medium confidence). A failed model copy is logged with log::warn! only, unlike the reader arm just below it, which notifies. Posted inline.
Earlier concerns: none (no prior threads). Nothing was approved, merged, or modified.

Gate the desktop-only model-run assertions for wasm32 test builds.
The added assertions call crate::readjob::land and app.reads.cancel_for_tests(). Both exist only off wasm32. The #[cfg(test)] mod tests in this file has no wasm gate, so a wasm32 test build fails to compile. Move the desktop block into its own #[cfg(not(target_arch = "wasm32"))] test function.

The test at crates/ui-egui/src/modelbuilder.rs:1842-1854 lands the run on an unchanged graph. In that case the same check in landed does not change the result, so removing the check still passes the test. No other test in the inspected test sources lands a run after the graph changes.
Add a case that edits the graph between run_model and landing. Then assert that app.mb.status.is_empty(). This case would fail if the report is applied to a graph that differs from the one that ran.

Extend the test around run_model and landing to edit the graph between those
steps, then assert that app.mb.status is empty after landing. Use the existing
test setup and landing flow so the case verifies that a run report is not
applied to a graph that changed after execution.
The new model test cancels only before run starts, so no tool executes. No test in this section cancels a model run while one of its tools is running. While recording, run_tool_with runs the tool under the thread's current control. If that forwarding changes, these tests still pass.
Add a test that cancels during a model tool and asserts that the cancelled run stops and reports the cancellation. The existing a_tool_cancelled_while_it_runs_stops_with_how_far_it_came test does not cover this forwarding path, because it passes the control directly to run_with.

…Diagnostics, review notes
- ModelBuilder keeps the graphs of the runs asked in order, so Run
pressed twice marks the canvas as each lands, and uses the engine's
report only when the run made it (not one refused before it ran).
- The copy of the session sends only its requests to the session's
Diagnostics; its notices (and its stop at a file-writing tool) stay
its own, as the run here says them.
- A failed copy says so before the model runs here.
- A model landing while another Workflows section is open leaves that
section's result alone.
- The engine test is gated to the desktop; the docs say files read by
path aren't compared.

I read the full diff, the prior review threads, and the surrounding code for the changed paths. I did not build or run the tests (no shell here), so the compile and test results are unverified. Overall the design holds up: the copy's stop points, the take-time checks (same_read, view, params), the diagnostics split, and the queue/then pairing all check out on reading.
Bugs
Low, ~45%: a model run from the Models list can land while a ModelBuilder run is still pending. landed then clears the canvas's log, which drops that pending run's Running… line and writes the other graph's result under it. Inline comment on modelbuilder.rs:427.
Security
None found. Untrusted models are still checked in the copy (trusted_models is carried over), and file-writing tools stop the copy.
Performance
Low, ~40%: each recorded tool keeps a full map clone (Snapshot::owned) until it is taken. Inline comment on gp.rs:1163.
Quality
Low, ~55%: the stop check enumerates external sources by hand, so a future external source would run inside the copy and could write files twice. Inline comment on gp.rs:1153, with a suggestion using external_source(t).is_none().
Nits, left for the release quality pass: the reads.rs module doc wraps raggedly ("takes what / the read needs"), and the copy-failure notice in readjob.rs uses notify(…, false) while the reader-bug arm uses true.
AGENTS.md
The PR changes visible UI (the status-bar Run Model progress and Cancel, ModelBuilder's Running…, the Models list's Run) but the body has no screenshots. AGENTS asks for before and after images for changed UI and after images for new UI, so this needs them.
Test gaps against "test both ways" and the documented behaviour: nothing checks that a view-dependent tool reruns when the view moves, and nothing checks that the copy's requests reach the live Diagnostics once and its notices don't.
Prior threads
I left all 8 existing threads alone. Five are resolved or outdated and fixed in 70e6779. The file-path limit (analysis.md) is now stated in the docs. The copy-failure test gap (readjob.rs) was answered by the author. I checked the diagnostics thread (workflows.rs) against the code and it is fixed: notices go to the copy's own history, and only requests use requests_into.
Change size
Compared with main (merge base f45e3e1 to PR head 70e6779).
I reviewed the whole PR (model tools run ahead on a copy of the session, the readjob/ModelBuilder/Workflows wiring, and the docs) against the prior threads. I found one open issue and left the others alone as already answered or fixed.
Bugs
Canvas Running… line cleared by another graph's landing (Low, ~65% confidence). landed in modelbuilder.rs clears the canvas log and status even when the landing run is for a different graph. Scenario: run A on the canvas, open model B, run B, then A lands. B's "Running…" disappears while B is still pending. The earlier reply only covered Models-list runs, so this is still open. Inline comment posted at crates/ui-egui/src/modelbuilder.rs:434 with a suggestion.
Security
None found. Model runs on the copy go through the same trust checks as the live run, and the copy stops before any file-writing, plugin or GeoLibre tool.
Performance
Nothing new. The per-tool Snapshot::owned retention was already discussed and left as is.
Quality
Nits, not posted inline, for the release quality pass:
crates/engine/src/cmd/reads.rs module doc: the reflowed line ends mid-sentence ("takes what" / "the read needs…").
crates/ui-egui/src/modelbuilder.rs: the landed parameter shadows the function name.
crates/ui-egui/src/readjob.rs: pub use crate::Landed; plus pub type Then adds indirection that could be simpler.
AGENTS.md
The copy-failure notice in readjob::land has no regression test. The author explained why (a test would need a panic hook). AGENTS.md asks for tests on crash fixes, and this is a fallback path, so I'm noting it, not raising it.
No unwrap, expect, panic or unsafe in new non-test code. wasm gating looks consistent. Interface strings are wrapped in tl! or tl_raw!. The docs are updated.
I left alone 10 concerns that prior threads already raised. Most are resolved, and the Snapshot memory concern was answered by the author.
I could not build or run the tests in this environment, so the compile and test status is unverified.
Change size
Compared: the whole PR against main (merge base f45e3e1 to PR head a2cd5b3).
Moving a node on the canvas during a run changes app.mb.graph, because ModelNode carries x/y. landed then sees same == false, drops the node marks, and logs only "Run finished." The results still reach the map, so no data is lost. The fix is to compare graphs with positions ignored. Medium-low, confidence ~70%. Posted inline at crates/ui-egui/src/modelbuilder.rs:432.
Security
No findings. Trust is carried into the copy (trusted_models), and the copy stops at file-writing, plugin and GeoLibre tools.
Performance
No new findings. The Snapshot clone concern was already raised. Features is Arc-shared, so res.clone() is cheap. A mismatch on take still runs the model twice, which is by design.
Quality
The file-writing gate in run_tool_with keys on writes_files (a SaveFile param), but apply writes any Output::File natively. A future tool that returns Output::File without SaveFile would be written by the copy and again by the run here. Latent only, since every current file tool declares SaveFile. Low, confidence ~50%. Posted inline at crates/engine/src/cmd/gp.rs:1151.
Nits, for the release quality pass: the reads.rs module doc has a broken line wrap ("takes what" at the end of line 4). The Landed enum sits between two cfg-gated module declarations in ui-egui/src/lib.rs. The docs paragraph does not mention that a run is left when the map or project changes, or that tools which call view_extent re-run when the view moves.
AGENTS.md
The PR changes visible UI (status bar Run Model/Cancel, the canvas "Running…" line, the Models list). AGENTS.md requires screenshots (before and after for changed UI, after for new UI). The PR body has none. Confidence high.
Panic helpers appear only in test code, which is allowed. New user-visible strings go through tl! or i18n::fmt. The wasm gating looks consistent. I did not run the build or tests, since there is no shell here.
Already raised, left alone: 13 earlier threads cover the model run queue and its ordering, project and map handling, the copy's Diagnostics, the copy's panic notice, the Snapshot memory cost, the file-by-path docs gap, the analysispane section guard, the is_external gate, and the wasm test gate. All were answered, resolved or marked outdated, and I did not re-raise any of them.

I found no bugs or crash paths that I'd stand behind. I read the diff, the surrounding code in gp.rs, reads.rs, readjob.rs, workflows.rs, analysis/src/control.rs and map's source and raster types, and checked the run-ahead design against each point below. I could not compile or run the tests in this environment (no shell), so the wasm build and clippy are unverified.
Bugs
None found. I checked: the one-to-one matching of then callbacks with mb.running entries (run_then, land, stop); the take/record ordering in run_tool_with, including fit_to_windows running after recording; same_read against load_all_counted, streamed_inputs, RasterInput and Read::unchanged; and the wasm cfg gating of the new items. Each looked correct.
Security
None found. The copy runs in-process on the thread, with no new I/O beyond what the live run would do.
Performance
Already raised and left alone: Snapshot::owned clones the whole map for each recorded tool (prior thread, answered).
Quality
Posted inline on crates/engine/src/cmd/gp.rs:1156 (confidence ~50%): copy tools run uncapped because they take the thread's stoppable control, while the live run keeps the work cap. The same model can therefore succeed ahead and fail when run here. The user docs don't say so.
Nit, not posted: readjob.rs builds left_too even when n == 0.
Not raised: same_read's raster arm compares path and pixel Arcs but not embedded/file_name, which RasterInput passes to tools. I found no path that changes them on a layer that keeps its pixels, so I rate this low (~25%).
AGENTS.md
The "Test both ways" gap for the new "couldn't work in the background" notice was already raised and answered in the prior thread. I left it alone.
Translation wrapping, layering, the cfg gating for wasm and the no-unwrap rule all check out.
Already raised, left alone: 16 earlier threads, all resolved or answered by the author. None of them is re-posted here, and I found nothing new in the code they point at.

How
The same approach as Add Data and Load All in #1479: the work is done ahead on a thread, then the command runs here and takes it.
reads::read_ahead(s, "model.run", p)→workflows::model_ahead. On the thread, it builds aSession::new(project.clone())copy, puts it in recording mode (Session::tools_ahead) and runsmodel.runthere.gp::run_tool_withrecords each tool's tool id, params, aSnapshotof what it read (and the view extent, if the tool asked for it), its result, its streamedfull_idsand its time.model.runon the frame as it always has.gp::take_aheadhands a tool its recorded result only ifsame_readsays the inputs are unchanged. It compares:Arc), fields, CRS, source, selection and definition query;Arc;readjobgainsrun_thenwith aLandedcallback, so ModelBuilder and the Models list get the answer when the run lands, or the reason it never ran (cancelled, left). ModelBuilder marks nodes only if the canvas still holds the graph that ran.Known limits (in the docs)
Tests
a_models_tools_run_ahead_are_taken_by_its_run:ci_fast.sh(fmt, clippy, all tests, xtask layers, the wasm build): pass, apart from the box-only failures known onmain.Summary by CodeRabbit
