perf(analysis): Near searches its features on several cores (#1252) - #1369
Near now searches its features on several cores on the desktop. The output is the same as on one thread, in the same order.
Measured in a release build on a Xeon Silver 4114 (40 threads), with 100,000 points against 20,000 polygons:
Threads
Time
1 (the loop on main)
7.40 s
16 (the helper's limit)
0.80 s
How
Searches on parallel::try_map: each input feature's nearest search only reads the spatial index, so the searches run on their own. The output rows are then made in input order on the calling thread, the same as before.
Same search: the nearest feature, the distance and the nearest or shared point are found by the same code as before. It only moved into the closure.
threads only above PARALLEL_FEATURES (256) features;
at most 16 threads, with the calling thread working too.
New for Near: it now honours Cancel and reports progress by feature, through try_map. Before, it did neither.
Tests
near_on_several_threads_is_near_on_one: 1,500 points (some without geometry) against 300 polygons, across ±180°, with and without a search distance, and with one layer as both input and near. Runs on 2, 7 and 16 threads and compares every row's attributes against one thread.
cargo xtask ci passes locally (fmt, clippy, tests, layers), apart from tests that fail only on this machine (GDAL and a damaged-Shapefile fixture).
Summary by CodeRabbit
Performance
Searches across selected targets now run in parallel, which can reduce wait times for larger searches. Results remain in input order, with existing distance limits, self-exclusion, and output behavior preserved.
Reliability
Single-threaded and multi-threaded searches now have regression coverage, including searches within the same layer.

Each input feature's nearest search only reads the index, so the searches run on
parallel::try_map; the rows are then made in input order, the same as on one thread
(near_on_several_threads_is_near_on_one). 100,000 points against 20,000 polygons: 7.4 s on one
thread, 0.80 s on 16.

- Line 4557: Update the flow around `try_map_on` so the browser’s single-thread
path processes targets in bounded chunks, building and appending each chunk’s
output rows before processing the next instead of retaining a hit for every
target. Preserve input order and the existing error behavior.
Walkthrough
near now delegates to near_on, which accepts an optional thread count. near_on computes target matches in parallel and writes results in input order. A regression test compares results across thread counts for unrestricted, distance-limited, and same-layer searches.
Changes: Parallel Near searches
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Parallel search and ordered output crates/analysis/src/tools.rs
near delegates to near_on. The helper uses try_map_on to compute per-target matches in parallel, then writes results in input order. A regression test compares one-thread results with counts of 2, 7, and 16 across three search cases.
Near preserves output order, but large browser workloads now require additional memory. The change is mergeable with awareness of this bounded overhead; a selected-row ordering test would strengthen regression protection.

Explanation
The title names the main change: Near feature searches now run on several cores. It follows the conventional commit style and the PR objectives confirm the parallel search via parallel::try_map. The title is specific and accurate.
Full details: Description check
Explanation
The description covers the What, How, and Tests sections with substantive detail. It explains the parallel search, the threading rules, the benchmark, and the new regression test. The template's UI evidence section is missing. The PR has no visible UI change, so the author should keep the template's 'No visible UI change.' line. The author did not include it. The Summary and Testing sections are present under different headings. The Related issue section is also missing; the description says 'Part of #1252', which covers it in the body but not in the template's section. Because the content is substantive and only minor template sections are absent, the check passes.

Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 0 functions across 0 files. Bugs: None found. I checked the new near_on path against the helpers it relies on:
feats, index and ds are shared read-only across the worker threads, and the measured map is created per closest call, so nothing is shared mutably. Confidence: high.
try_map_on returns results in input order, and hits has one entry per target, so the zip can't silently drop rows. Confidence: high.
Cancellation and progress go through control::begin, check and advance, and a Cancelled error converts to String. run_with turns a cancelled run into an error that says how far it got. Confidence: high.
Threads are only used above PARALLEL_FEATURES and never in the browser, which threads_for enforces. Confidence: high.
Security: None found. The change adds no input parsing, file access or external calls.
Performance: None found. The per-target searches are independent and the output is still built serially. The hits vector holds one small tuple per target, which is minor next to the feature rows the output already holds.
Quality:
Near now honours Cancel and reports progress, but no test covers either. The IDW and buffer tests in tools.rs show the pattern for this. The existing test only compares attributes across thread counts. Confidence: medium that this matters. Per AGENTS.md, an extra test for code that works is a quality point, so I left it out of the inline comments and put it here for the release quality pass.
AGENTS.md:
No unwrap, expect, panic!, unsafe or indexing is added in non-test code.
No user-visible text is added, so no tl! wrapping is needed.
The change is confined to crates/analysis, so the layering is unaffected.
No data is dropped or truncated, so no notice is needed.
Nothing in the change touches wasm: threads_for returns 1 on wasm32.
I checked 0 earlier concerns: pr-context/prior-reviews.json had no threads.
Change size
Compared: the whole PR against main (merge base f3bfdcc to PR head 21f67b1).
The thread-comparison test passes targets through Map, whose selection returns an empty slice. Every target row therefore runs in layer order. No Near test passes a multi-row input selection, so a change that sorted selected target rows would not fail any Near test. The current code keeps selection order: rows returns the selection in its given order, and near_on builds the output in that order.
Add a case that selects targets [2, 1] and asserts the output row order:
Suggested test addition
}
+ // Selected target rows keep their selection order.+ let m = Selected(m, HashMap::from([("targets".to_string(), vec![2, 1])]));+ let out = layer(near_on(&m, &serde_json::json!({"input": "targets", "near": "near", "units": "Meters"}), Some(7)).unwrap());+ assert_eq!(out.features.iter().map(|f| f.attrs[0].clone()).collect::<Vec<_>>(), [Value::Int(2), Value::Int(1)]);
}

Review comment at @crates/analysis/src/tools.rs at line 8404:
Add a Near test case using a multi-row selection for the targets input in the
thread-comparison test, and assert that output rows preserve the selected order
[2, 1]. Locate the test via its Map setup and verify the resulting feature
attributes appear in that order.
