Part of #1291 (step 2, caps scaled to the machine).

Why

Viewshed, IDW, Kriging, Kernel Density and Deep Learning refuse a run past a second or two of work on one thread (more on more threads, #1376). The caps were there because nothing could stop a long run. Since #1311, #1404, #1412 and #1416, a run from the Tools or Analysis pane goes on its own thread with progress and Cancel, so for those runs the cap only gets in the way: the user can watch the progress and stop it.

What

  • Control::stoppable() (crates/analysis/src/control.rs): a control for a run someone can stop while it goes. control::uncapped() says whether the current run has one; parallel::work_cap returns no cap for it. Never in the browser.
  • Who gets one: the desktop's background runners (analysispane.rs start, panes.rs start_tool_run) and rustgis-cli run (Session::long_runs: gp::run_tool, workflows::made_or_ran, dl.train), which Ctrl-C stops. Scripts, models in the app, the assistant, MCP, Python and the web app keep today's caps; their refusals now say where the work isn't capped.
  • Deep Learning: from the pane, training fits every sampled pixel for every epoch asked, and Classify takes any model on any raster. Elsewhere it keeps its cut.
  • Cancel within a row: without a cap one row can take long, so IDW, Kriging, Viewshed and the classifier look at the cancel flag every few milliseconds of work within a row (control::Pace), and training does every mini-batch. Kernel Density already did.
  • Unchanged: memory caps, Viewshed's window limit, file-reader limits, default cell sizes (they still follow the one-thread cap, so a tool makes the same grid anywhere), and the topology check's cap (fix(analysis): keep polar geometry through the geometry tools (#1033) #1347, fix(engine): edit polar features on the ground (#1033) #1348 and fix(analysis): measure radius searches on the ground near a pole, and meet at the poles (#1033) #1349 rework it).
  • Docs: the analysis guide's limits paragraph and the Deep Learning section.

Tests

  • IDW, Kriging, Kernel Density and the classifier: a run past the cap is refused under a plain control, and passes the cap under a stoppable one (cancelled before it starts, it stops with the cancel error).
  • control: only a stoppable run is uncapped; Pace sees a cancel after its work.

Not covered by a test: that the runners above choose a stoppable control. Exercising it means an uncapped run past the cap, which takes seconds.

Notes

  • A task or model recorded from a pane run keeps the caps when it runs again in the app, so a step the pane took on can be refused there (with the hint), and a model trained again can differ. The guide says so.
  • Capped training fitting a share of the sampled pixels isn't reported (it predates this change); a follow-up could add a notice.
  • rustgis-cli has no Ctrl-C handler: stopping it ends the process, so a --save in the same call doesn't happen.

cargo xtask ci steps passed locally (fmt, clippy, tests, layers, wasm build).

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Desktop geoprocessing pane runs—including Viewshed, IDW Interpolation, Kriging, Kernel Density, and Deep Learning—can be cancelled during processing, including within long-running work.
    • Terminal-interactive rustgis-cli run executions can perform uncapped work and be stopped with Ctrl-C. Programmatic CLI runs retain work limits.
    • Desktop Deep Learning training uses all sampled pixels for requested epochs, subject to the existing epoch limit, and can be cancelled.
  • Documentation
    • Clarified which execution routes support cancellation and uncapped work, and which work and memory limits remain in effect.

…os#1291 step 2)

Viewshed, IDW, Kriging, Kernel Density and Deep Learning refused runs past
a second or two of work because nothing could stop them. Run from the Tools
or Analysis pane they now go on a thread with progress and Cancel, so a
stoppable Control (the panes' runners, and rustgis-cli run, which Ctrl-C
stops) lifts those caps. Scripts, models, the assistant, Python and the web
app keep them; refusals there say where the work isn't capped.

Without a cap one row can take long, so IDW, Kriging, Viewshed and the
classifier look at the cancel flag within a row (control::Pace), and
training looks at it every mini-batch. Memory caps and default cell sizes
are unchanged.

Walkthrough

Native stoppable runs can exceed existing work caps while checking for cancellation. Selected desktop pane and CLI paths use stoppable controls. Analysis operations add paced cancellation checks. Other execution contexts retain work limits.

Changes: Analysis cancellation and uncapped work

Layer / File(s) Summary
Stoppable controls and work policy
crates/analysis/src/control.rs, crates/analysis/src/parallel.rs
Control::stoppable() marks native runs as stoppable. uncapped() and work_cap identify uncapped runs, and Pace checks cancellation after a work threshold.
Raster, density, and Kriging cancellation
crates/analysis/src/density.rs, crates/analysis/src/kriging.rs, crates/analysis/src/rasterops.rs
Density, Kriging, Viewshed, and IDW retain work-cap errors with an uncapped hint. Their workers add paced cancellation checks, and tests cover cancellation behavior.
Deep Learning training and classification
crates/analysis/src/neural.rs
Stoppable runs use uncapped training work and skip classification’s work rejection. Training checks between batches, and classification checks cancellation within rows.
Stoppable execution routes and run limits
crates/engine/src/cmd/*, crates/engine/src/lib.rs, crates/ui-egui/src/analysispane.rs, crates/ui-egui/src/panes.rs, apps/rustgis-cli/src/main.rs, docs/user-guide/analysis.md
Selected engine commands, desktop pane jobs, and terminal-interactive CLI runs use stoppable controls. The guide distinguishes these paths from runs that retain work limits.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title names the feature area (analysis) and the main behavior change: a run that can be cancelled takes no work cap. The raw summary confirms this is the central change, adding Control::stoppable() and uncapped work_cap for stoppable runs, with the step reference (#1291 step 2) giving context. The title is a single line and specific enough for a teammate scanning history, though it is a bit long at 76 characters.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description covers the purpose (why the caps existed and why they now get in the way), a detailed What section listing the changed components, a Tests section with what is and is not covered, and Notes on limitations. It does not include the template's UI evidence section, which the template requires and marks as required. The author wrote 'No visible UI change.' in the template is expected, but the description never includes that line. The Related issue section is partly covered by the 'Part of #1291' line at the top, but it is not placed under the template heading. The Summary content is substantive, so the description is mostly complete, and the missing UI evidence line and the Testing section heading are minor gaps.

Resolution

Add the template headings, including a '## UI evidence' section that keeps the 'No visible UI change.' line, and move 'Part of #1291' under '## Related issue'. Use the template's '## Testing' heading for the existing Tests section.

Bugs

  • Timeout-bound CLI callers now run uncapped (medium confidence, ~0.6). rustgis-cli run sets Session::long_runs. Its own comment says an assistant or MCP client waits on it with a timeout, and that such runs get the app's bounds. This PR makes every long_runs run uncapped. A timed-out caller now gets a killed process and lost unsaved --cmd results, not a refusal. Inline comment posted on crates/engine/src/cmd/gp.rs:1014.

Security

  • None found. Input is still bounded by the memory caps, and the new uncapped paths are only reachable through Control::stoppable().

Performance

  • None found. Pace::stop adds one add and a compare per cell or pixel and reads the cancel flag about every 4M units.

Quality

  • The refusal hint reaches every caller (low-medium confidence, ~0.4). UNCAPPED_HINT goes into refusals for assistant, MCP, Python and script callers, who the PR says keep their caps. It sends them to rustgis-cli run, which is uncapped, and to a pane they can't reach. "Can be cancelled" is also wrong for the CLI, which has no Ctrl-C handler. Inline comment posted on crates/analysis/src/parallel.rs:73.
  • Nits, left out of the release quality pass: the Session::long_runs doc comment in crates/engine/src/lib.rs:571 runs past 100 columns; the PACE_WORK doc says "a few milliseconds" without a measurement.

AGENTS.md

  • Checked and fine: no unwrap/expect/panic in the non-test code, the wasm path via cfg!, layering (analysis only), tests for both the refused and accepted cases, and the docs match the code. neural::train returns Ok with a partial model on cancel, but that predates this PR and run_under turns it into Err on every stoppable path.
  • I could not compile or run the tests here. I verified cancellation propagation by reading the row drivers: for_each_row ends with control::check(), and each caller propagates it with ?.

Already raised: none. prior-reviews.json was empty, so I left nothing alone.

Check cancellation in the held-back accuracy loop.

After the training loop stops on cancel, train still runs the held-back accuracy pass with no cancellation check. With 64 classes, 4000 samples per class, and four hidden layers of 256 units, this pass can take several seconds before the cancelled result returns.

Check cancellation inside the Kriging point scan for large inputs.

Kriging checks Cancel once per cell, before it scans every input point. With very large point sets, a cancelled run can keep one worker busy for the full scan and neighbour selection of the current cell before it stops.

Check cancellation inside the point scan of each IDW cell.

An uncapped stoppable run checks Cancel only before each cell. Each cell scans every input point, so one cell over millions of points can run for a noticeable time after Cancel. The scan has no check of its own.

Possible approach

Call pace.stop(...) inside the point loop of the cell closure, and return early when it reports a stop. Confirm that the row and thread paths in parallel::for_each_row leave the output in a valid state for a cancelled run before you add this.

Add a classifier test that cancels during row processing.

The new test cancels the control before classify_on starts. for_each_row returns CANCELLED at its first row check, so the pace.stop check inside the row loop never runs. Removing that check would leave this test passing. Add a test that cancels after row 0 has started.

Test scope

This finding covers only the classifier test gap. The Pace mechanism itself has a unit test in control.rs, and for_each_row has a mid-run cancellation test. No test checks that classify_on calls pace.stop.

1558-1561: Trivial · Maintainability & Code Quality · Poor tradeoff

Add a test that cancels an IDW run after its first row starts.

The added IDW case at rasterops.rs:1558-1561 cancels the run before any row is made. With one thread, for_each_row checks for cancellation before it calls the row closure, so the test returns CANCELLED without reaching the per-cell pace.stop at rasterops.rs:579. Removing that check would leave the test passing. No test in rasterops.rs cancels a run during row work. A regression that stops checking within a wide IDW row would not be detected.

Test sketch

Start a stoppable run with a wide row. Cancel it from another thread after row work has begun. Assert that the result is CANCELLED, and that the run stops before it finishes all cells.

@coderabbitai Follow-ups from your review:

  • Held-back accuracy loop after a cancel (neural.rs): fixed in 88795f9. train returns the cancel error right after the epochs loop, before the accuracy pass, so a cancelled training stops without that pass.
  • Cancel inside one IDW or Kriging cell's point scan: not changing it. One cell scans every point once (a distance each, a few ns), so even tens of millions of points keep a cell well under a second; the Pace check per cell already bounds a row. Points that many would hit the memory caps on loading first.

// terminal can stop a run with Ctrl-C, so there tools take no work cap; a program
// calling it may have a timeout, and keeps the caps.

s.stoppable = std::io::stdin().is_terminal() && std::io::stderr().is_terminal();

The terminal check doesn't separate a person from a program with a pseudo-terminal (medium-low confidence). is_terminal() on stdin and stderr is true for any caller that runs the CLI under a pty: script, tmux or screen panes, IDE and CI terminal runners, and some agent shells. Such a caller can wait with a timeout, and it now gets no refusal past the caps, so a timed-out call is killed with its --save lost. This is the timeout case the earlier thread raised, narrowed but not gone. Options: an explicit opt-in flag on run (for example --stoppable) that a person types, with the TTY check kept only for the default, or a note in the guide that a pty-attached caller is uncapped too.

Code review

Bugs

  • No new correctness bugs found. Cancellation is reported as an error, not a partial result: for_each_row ends in control::check(), accumulate_density ends in check(), and neural training now runs check()? before returning a model. The earlier accumulate_density and CLI-timeout concerns are fixed in 88795f9. Confidence: high.

Security

  • None found.

Performance

  • No new issues. The Pace checks are every 4M work units, so cancel latency stays in the milliseconds. Confidence: medium-high.

Quality

  • Nit: the docs (docs/user-guide/analysis.md, Deep Learning paragraph) say training runs "for all the epochs asked", but MAX_EPOCHS (500) still clamps the count. Say "up to 500". Confidence: high.
  • Nit: the new s.stoppable branches in gp::run_tool, workflows::made_or_ran and deeplearning::train have no test. The PR body already says so. Confidence: high.
  • Nit: the Control::stoppable doc says "with a Cancel button or Ctrl-C". For rustgis-cli, Ctrl-C kills the process and sets no cancel flag. Confidence: medium.

AGENTS.md

  • No violations found in the changed code. There are no non-test unwrap/expect, the wasm gating (Control::stoppable, UNCAPPED_HINT) is in place, and the refusals go through Err strings. Confidence: high.

New concern (inline comment posted)

  • apps/rustgis-cli/src/main.rs:856: the stdin/stderr TTY test does not separate a person from a program running under a pty, so a timeout-bound caller in a pty gets no refusal. Confidence: medium-low.

Already raised, left alone (2)

  • UNCAPPED_HINT appended to assistant, MCP, Python and script refusals, pointing them at the pane and the CLI (crates/analysis/src/parallel.rs:73). The author has not replied to it and the code is unchanged.
  • The long_runs-driven uncapped path (crates/engine/src/cmd/gp.rs:1014). The author fixed it in 88795f9, so I did not repost it. The pty residue is the new inline comment above.

Verified against prior threads

  • The accumulate_density cancel-latency thread is answered and the fix is present (density.rs Pace per row).

235-239: Trivial · Maintainability & Code Quality · Poor tradeoff

Cover the within-window cancellation check in accumulate_density.

No test in crates/analysis/src/density.rs observes cancellation at the pace.stop check at line 237. The two cancellation tests cancel before the run starts, so the strip closure does not reach the check. The other density tests run uncancelled. In those tests the check runs and returns false.

Removing the check leaves every density test passing. The final control::check() in accumulate_density returns CANCELLED for any cancelled run, whether or not the window check fired. A test that cancels during a wide-window point and asserts only CANCELLED also passes without the check.

Detecting the removal needs an observable that differs between an early exit inside the window and a completed window. The inspected code does not provide one.

Optional refactor

This is optional coverage for behavior that already works. Without the check, a cancelled run can take longer to stop when one point's window is wide.

Review comment at @crates/analysis/src/density.rs around lines 235 - 239:
There is no test that detects whether `pace.stop` exits early inside a wide
window in `accumulate_density`; asserting only `CANCELLED` cannot distinguish
that from the final cancellation check. Establish a safe observable for whether
the window finishes, then add a test that cancels during a wide-window point and
verifies the within-window check prevents completion. Do not assume an existing
observable or add an unsupported API; first determine how this behavior can be
observed.

@pick2510 Thanks for the follow-up.

  • Held-back accuracy: Confirmed in crates/analysis/src/neural.rs, Line 379. crate::control::check()? runs after the epochs loop and before the accuracy pass. This addresses cancellation detected during training.
  • IDW and Kriging point scans: Understood. I accept leaving the per-cell Pace checks unchanged and will not insist on inner-scan checks. I have not independently verified the timing or memory-cap estimates.
