Part of #1252, step 2: slope, aspect and hillshade in row bands. #1111 step 6 hands its raster kernels to #1252.

What

Slope, Aspect and Hillshade now make their rows on several cores on the desktop. The output is the same, bit for bit, as on one thread.

Measured in a release build on a Xeon Silver 4114 (40 threads), with hillshade of a 9667 × 11947 DEM, the size #1111 measured (115 M cells):

Threads Time
1 (the row pass on main) 12.62 s
16 (the helper's limit) 1.39 s

How

Tests

  • terrain_rows_match_scalar_edges_nodata_and_orientations now also runs the row pass on 1, 2, 7 and 16 threads, on a larger 60 × 41 grid as well as the small ones. It compares bit for bit against the per-cell reference across every grid orientation, no-data and NaN holes, and z-factors 0, 1 and 2.5.
  • cargo xtask ci passes locally (fmt, clippy, tests, layers), apart from tests that fail only on this machine (GDAL, a damaged-Shapefile fixture, and an intermittent plugin test).

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Performance
    • Terrain calculations now process rows in parallel, with the number of threads adjusted based on workload.
  • Reliability
    • Results remain consistent across different thread counts, with existing handling preserved for edges, small grids, malformed data, and no-data values.

…engeos#1252)

The terrain row pass (opengeos#1130) runs its rows on parallel::for_each_row: each output row is made from
the three input rows around it and written where it lies, so the output is the same bit for bit as
on one thread. Hillshade of a 9667 x 11947 DEM (the one opengeos#1111 measured): 12.6 s on one thread,
1.4 s on 16.

Walkthrough

Terrain calculations now use parallel row processing through a thread-configurable entry point. The implementation preserves scalar handling for edges and neighborhoods with no-data values. Tests compare parallel results with scalar results across several thread counts.

Changes: Terrain processing

Layer / File(s) Summary
Parallel terrain rows and validation
crates/analysis/src/rasterops.rs
terrain delegates to terrain_on, which accepts an optional thread count. Row workers write interior results into a prefilled output band; edge and invalid-neighborhood cases retain scalar handling. Tests compare outputs bit-for-bit across thread counts and include a larger grid.

The terrain parallelization has no established merge-blocking defect. Additional tests for default-path worker use and sign-sensitive aspect results would strengthen regression protection.

Explanation

The title names the change accurately: row passes for slope, aspect and hillshade are parallelized across several cores. It follows the conventional-commit form. The PR objectives describe the same change, so the title is on topic. It does not name the bit-for-bit guarantee or the #1252 rules, which is acceptable.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description follows the repository template and covers Summary, Testing, and Related issue. The Summary gives a clear What and How, with a timing table, and says the output matches the single-thread path bit for bit. The Testing section names the new test, the thread counts, the grid sizes, and the cargo xtask ci result, with some failures attributed to the local machine. The UI evidence section is missing. The change moves Slope, Aspect and Hillshade onto parallel rows and adds Cancel and progress reporting to these tools. It does not touch map rendering or any visible UI, so 'No visible UI change.' would be the correct entry, but the section was dropped instead of kept as the template requires. The Related issue section is filled in (Part of #1252, and #1111 step 6 hands kernels to #1252). Lines are not checked against the template placeholders beyond this.

Explanation

Docstring coverage is 50.00% which is insufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff with cyclomatic complexity of at least 2. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 2 functions across 1 files.

Resolution

Write docstrings for the functions missing them to satisfy the coverage threshold.

Code review

I found no bugs, security issues, or performance problems in this PR. I checked the row-band rewrite of terrain against the original per-cell logic, the edge and no-data paths, the bounds handling, the thread-count rules (threads_for_rows, MIN_ROW_WORK, wasm), the Sync bounds on the three callers, and the new bit-for-bit test.

Bugs: None found. Output order and values match the single-thread path. get() with out-of-range slices returns None rather than panicking, so the edge path covers row 0, row h-1, and the first and last column.

Security: None found.

Performance: None found. Thread count is capped at 16, stays at 1 below MIN_ROW_WORK and on wasm, and each row is written in place with no extra buffer.

Quality (minor, [medium] confidence):

  • terrain is now a one-line forwarder to terrain_on(None, …). Only the test needs terrain_on, so the wrapper could go, or the test could call terrain_on directly.
  • [g, hh, i] is an awkward name. hh exists only to avoid shadowing the height h. A short comment or a different name would read better.

AGENTS.md: Compliant. No unwrap, expect, or unsafe. The new code is platform-neutral and the layering is unchanged. The analysis crate already uses parallel.

Confidence notes:

  • Behaviour change, not in the PR description [high]: slope, aspect and hillshade now honour cancellation and report progress, which they did not before. The PR says "Cancel and progress work as before", which is inaccurate. I posted one inline comment on crates/analysis/src/rasterops.rs:91 asking for the description to be corrected and a cancel test added.

Prior reviews: prior-reviews.json has no threads, so no earlier concerns were skipped.

Nitpick Add an aspect comparison for negative pixelwidth rasters.

1262-1263: Trivial · Maintainability & Code Quality · Quick win

Add an aspect comparison for negative pixel_width rasters.

The new bit-for-bit loop compares only slope. Its closure x.hypot(y).atan() ignores the sign of each gradient component, so a sign error in the interior kernel's x gradient passes. Aspect and hillshade depend on that sign, and no test checks them on negative pixel_width rasters. Add this comparison in the loop:

Review comment at @crates/analysis/src/rasterops.rs around lines 1262 - 1263:
Add an aspect comparison to the bit-for-bit terrain test loop around terrain_on,
using a reference calculation that preserves the signs of both gradient
components; the existing slope comparison is insufficient because its
hypot-based closure discards sign. Include negative pixel_width cases and retain
contextual case details in the aspect assertion.
Nitpick Add a test that checks multi-worker execution on the default terrain path.

1260-1262: Trivial · Maintainability & Code Quality · Poor tradeoff

Add a test that checks multi-worker execution on the default terrain path.

The new terrain_on checks compare output bits only. The grid sizes in this test are at most 60 × 41 cells, below MIN_ROW_WORK. Explicit thread counts therefore run multi-threaded, but no test records worker use through the public terrain default path or the slope, aspect, and hillshade entries. A regression that runs all rows on one worker would still pass. Add a test on a raster with at least MIN_ROW_WORK cells, and assert that more than one thread runs rows.

Review comment at @crates/analysis/src/rasterops.rs around lines 1260 - 1262:
The `terrain_on` checks use explicit thread counts and undersized rasters, so
they do not verify default-path worker use. Add a test using a raster with at
least `MIN_ROW_WORK` cells and the public `terrain` default path, and assert
through established worker instrumentation that rows run on more than one
thread; cover the `slope`, `aspect`, and `hillshade` entries if they are part of
this default-path behavior.
