test(engine): release the archives before the GeoLibre sources test cleans up - #1436
Fixes the red CI on main (run 41864217896, commit aa2ddce): tests::geolibre_local_source_kinds_and_archives fails on Test (windows-latest) and Test (windows-11-arm).
Cause. The test ends with std::fs::remove_dir_all(dir).unwrap() while the session still has the imported archives open. Since #1195 (bc725b8), MBTiles metadata is read on background workers, and rustgis_data::mbtiles keeps pooled SQLite connections to tiles.mbtiles. Windows refuses to delete an open file: Os { code: 32, message: "The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process." } at crates\engine\src\tests.rs:25694. Linux deletes open files, so only Windows fails. The CI runs on bc725b8 and 2f16331 were cancelled, so aa2ddce's run was the first on main to show it.
Fix. At the end of the test: drop the session, close the archive's pooled connections (rustgis_data::mbtiles::close), and remove the temporary directory best effort (.ok()), as about 130 other tests in the file do. The directory is per process, so a leftover never affects a later run. The test's assertions are unchanged; library behaviour is unchanged. An open layer holding its file is expected.
Evidence. The test passes locally on Linux. This PR has the ci:windows label so the Windows jobs that failed on main run here.
Summary by CodeRabbit
Tests
Improved reliability of local-source test cleanup, including explicit file closure and non-failing temporary-directory removal.
…leans up
geolibre_local_source_kinds_and_archives failed on Windows (x64 and
ARM64) since #1195: remove_dir_all returned os error 32 because the
session and the MBTiles connection pool still held tiles.mbtiles open,
and Windows refuses to delete an open file. Drop the session, close the
archive's pooled connections, and make the cleanup best effort like the
other tests in the file.
The GeoLibre local-source test now releases its session and closes the MBTiles file before attempting to remove the temporary directory. It ignores errors from directory removal.

Release resources before directory removal crates/engine/src/tests.rs
The test drops the session and closes the MBTiles file before attempting directory removal. It ignores errors from the cleanup attempt.
The change releases archive resources before best-effort cleanup. The remaining stale-directory concern is pre-existing and does not block merging this cleanup fix.

Full details: Title check
Explanation
The title names the change: the test now releases the archives before the GeoLibre sources test cleans up. The raw summary confirms the session is dropped, the MBTiles file is closed explicitly, and directory cleanup is best effort. The title uses the test(engine) scope and is specific enough for a teammate scanning history to understand the main change.
Full details: Description check
Explanation
The description covers the template's required content. Summary: it explains the Windows CI failure cause (open MBTiles file blocks directory deletion), and the fix (drop session, close pooled connections, best-effort removal). Testing: it reports a local Linux pass and the ci:windows label for Windows jobs. UI evidence: it is not present as a heading-marked line, but the change has no visible UI effect and the template's 'No visible UI change.' line is effectively stated in the body as 'An open layer holding its file is expected' with no UI discussion; the 'No visible UI change.' line itself is not included verbatim. Related issue: the description references the failing CI run and commit but does not use the 'Closes #' or 'Part of #' format; it cites PR #1195 and commit hashes instead. These gaps are non-critical, so the description is mostly complete.

Reviewed the one-file test change in PR #1436 against pr-context/AGENTS.md. The change releases the MBTiles archive and tolerates a failed temp-dir cleanup, so the Windows-only remove_dir_all failure no longer fails the test.
Bugs
None confirmed. The close call matches the session's pool key in the normal case. dir comes from std::env::temp_dir() (absolute), and layer.rs opens std::path::absolute(path), which yields the same string. rustgis_data::mbtiles::close is re-exported under the same cfg(not(wasm32)) gate the test uses.
Low confidence (~30%): the metadata read spawned during import is detached. If it has not reached the pool when close runs, it can re-pool a connection and keep the file open. Because cleanup is .ok(), this only leaves a temp directory behind and does not fail the test. Inline comment posted on crates/engine/src/tests.rs:25698.
Security
None. Test-only change.
Performance
None.
Quality
The comment says the archives "stay open while the session draws them". The test never draws, so the comment is slightly loose. Left for the release quality pass.
.ok() discards the cleanup error silently. That is acceptable for test cleanup, since the directory is per-process and the test does not depend on it. Left for the release quality pass.
AGENTS.md
Complies. No non-test unwrap, no new dependency, no wasm impact, and no user-visible text. The change follows the best-effort cleanup pattern the PR cites.
Already-raised concerns left alone: 0. There were no prior review threads.

Clear the stale fixture directory before the test writes to it.
When cleanup fails, dir stays on disk with tiles.mbtiles and its metadata and tiles tables. A later run that gets the same process ID opens that file and runs CREATE TABLE metadata, which fails because the table exists. Remove the directory before create_dir_all, so each run starts clean.
Suggested fix
let dir = std::env::temp_dir().join(format!("rustgis-geolibre-kinds-{}", std::process::id()));
+ let _ = std::fs::remove_dir_all(&dir);
std::fs::create_dir_all(&dir).unwrap();

* fix(tiles): let go of an MBTiles file once no layer reads it
The pool of SQLite connections keeps up to four per file until the process
ends or the tile cache is cleared. Windows won't move or delete a file
SQLite has open, so a file a map had drawn stayed locked after its layer was
removed, for the rest of the session.
Each command run by itself now closes the connections to files no layer of
the project names, however the layer went (removed, undone, the project
closed). A file stays open while a layer on a map reads it, as #1436 expects.

* fix(tiles): collect the kept files once, and clean up after failed tests
close_unused collects the paths it keeps instead of walking the project
for each pooled file, which also drops the Clone bound. The two new
tests remove their files through a guard, so a failed assertion leaves
nothing behind, and the note on the retry says what it does and doesn't
check.

* fix(tiles): read a replaced MBTiles file again after its last layer went
Now that a file can be replaced once its last layer goes, adding it back
showed the old file's metadata, style and tiles until Reload Web Layers.
Session::run now calls cache::forget for a file a command took off the
project, and cache::forget covers MBTiles files.
is_open no longer counts a file with no connection left, and the
let-go test covers a file with two layers.

* fix(tiles): don't keep a read of an MBTiles file that was forgotten meanwhile
A file is forgotten when its last layer goes, and it may be replaced next, so
a read of it still under way mustn't be kept:
- Its metadata: each file now has the epoch it was forgotten at, which older
completions of that file can't pass. Reads of other files are kept, as they
may be framing a map.
- Its tile: the pending slot goes with the rest, and `store` drops a tile of an
MBTiles file whose slot is gone.
- Its style: forgetting no longer depends on a metadata entry, which the
64-entry clear may have dropped while the style stayed.
The replaced-file test now waits for the style, as it does for the tile.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
* fix(tiles): drop an old MBTiles read even if its tile was asked for again
`store` dropped a tile only when its slot was gone, so a read begun before the
file was forgotten was kept once the same tile had been asked for again, and
could overwrite the newer read's tile until the cache was cleared. Windows
doesn't rule this out: the file's connection is closed before the tile is
decoded and stored.
An answer now knows the epoch its fetch began at, and one of a file forgotten
since is treated as unanswered. `cache::forget` records that first, so no
answer falls between that and the slots going. Forgetting every file no longer
empties the record, since reads under way must still be told apart afterwards.
Also says in `forget_archive`'s comment that every file's styles go, and checks
that an address that isn't an MBTiles file records nothing.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
* fix(tiles): check for a forgotten MBTiles file as its tile is stored
Three cases around a read of a file forgotten meanwhile:
- `land` checked first and stored later, so `cache::forget` could fall between
and the old tile come back. It now does both under the cache's lock, which
`forget` takes after recording the file.
- An old read that landed removed the newer read's pending slot, so the next
request read the same tile again. It now leaves the slot alone.
- The record of forgotten files was emptied at 64, and tile reads under way of
those files were then kept. It now isn't bounded: a path and a number per
file whose last layer went. Checking `CLEARED` instead would drop answers
after `cache::clear`, which keeps reads under way, and leave their slots
pending.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
* fix(tiles): tell a forgotten MBTiles read by when its tile was asked for
The epoch was read when the fetch left the queue, so a tile asked for before
the file was forgotten, and started after, counted as newer and was kept. It
is now read as the slot is made, under the same lock, and goes with the job.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
* fix(tiles): bound the record of forgotten MBTiles files
Its paths come from command parameters, so it holds 64 files now and is emptied
when full. A tile asked for before that can't be told from one of a forgotten
file, so it goes as if unanswered: its slot is removed and it's read again when
next asked for. At worst a read runs twice; no slot stays pending and no old
tile is kept. This is apart from `CLEARED`, since `cache::clear` keeps the
reads under way.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
* fix(tiles): don't empty the record for a file it already holds
Forgetting a file already recorded only overwrites its entry, so a full record
needn't be emptied for it. Also says that `EPOCH` counts per-file forgets too.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
* fix(tiles): take an MBTiles file's path whole when forgetting it
`cache::forget` and `resource_of` split a COG's look (`#cube=1`) off every
address, so a file named `maps#cube=1.mbtiles` was forgotten as `maps`:
`forget_archive` refused that name, so its metadata stayed and a read of it
under way was kept, while its tiles and the record name the whole path.
Both now take an MBTiles file's path whole. The docs of `forget_archive`
and `remember_info` now say that a full record or a full clear rejects
other files' reads too.
