Summary

On Windows, a removed MBTiles layer leaves its file locked for the rest of the session. The file can't be moved, renamed or deleted, by RustGIS or by anything else, until RustGIS closes or Reload Web Layers clears the tile cache. Once it can be replaced, adding it again must also read the new file, so this PR forgets what was read of a file when its last layer goes.

#1436 made geolibre_local_source_kinds_and_archives close the connections itself, and said that an open layer holding its file is expected. This PR agrees and doesn't change that. It handles the next step: a layer that's gone.

Cause. rustgis_data::mbtiles keeps up to four SQLite connections per file in a pool (since #113). Nothing closes them when a layer goes away. SQLite on Windows opens files without FILE_SHARE_DELETE, so a pooled connection blocks a move or a delete. PMTiles files don't have this problem, as they open the file for each read.

Changes

  • rustgis-data, mbtiles.rs:
    • New close_unless(keep) closes the connections to the files keep says no to. It does nothing when it keeps them all.
    • New is_open(path), so tests can check this on every platform, since Linux deletes open files.
  • rustgis-tiles, mbtiles.rs: new close_unused(archives). file_of is now the one place that turns an address into a path, so the pool's keys and this check can't differ.
  • rustgis-tiles, cache.rs: cache::forget now also covers an MBTiles file: its tiles, its metadata, the styles made from them and its connections. Unlike the other archive kinds, a read of that file under way isn't kept either, since it may be of the old file. Reads of other files are kept: a global invalidation here made layer.addData miss its framing when another session removed a different file. Repair Data Source calls cache::forget too, so it now covers MBTiles files as well.
  • rustgis-engine, lib.rs: Session::run calls close_unused with the project's MBTiles layers after each command run by itself, and cache::forget for a file that command took off the project. Doing this in one place covers every way a layer can go: map.removeTiles, undo, map.remove, project.new, opening another project, a repair pointing elsewhere.
  • docs/user-guide/data-formats.md: says the file can't be moved or deleted on Windows while a map draws it, until its layer is removed.

Choices in this proposal

  • The file stays locked while its layer is on a map, as test(engine): release the archives before the GeoLibre sources test cleans up #1436 expects. The pool is there for tile reads, and the layer would break anyway if the file moved.
  • Closing only in map.removeTiles would be smaller but leave holes. Undo, deleting a map and closing the project would all still hold the file.
  • The metadata read still goes through the pool, so a file added and never drawn is held too, until its layer goes. Giving it a connection of its own would free that case, but the app draws a layer as soon as it's added, so users wouldn't gain anything.

Known limits

  • A read under way or queued when the layer is removed can put a connection back in the pool. The file then stays locked until the next command that reaches the engine; the app's ui.* commands don't count, as they don't go through Session::run. Closing it sooner would take a kept set in rustgis-tiles or a check in the frame loop, which seemed too much for a read that's already queued. This case hasn't been reproduced.
  • The pool belongs to the process and the layers to a session, so with several sessions in one process (the tests, or several Python Engines), one session's command also closes another's connections. Nothing fails: the next read opens the file again. Avoiding this would take a registry of live sessions, which seemed too much for the cost of a reopen.
  • A session dropped with a layer still on its map leaves the connections in the pool until another session runs a command or the process ends. The app has one session for the life of the process, so this only reaches scripts with several Engines.
  • Forgetting a file clears every file's resolved styles and warped-tile plans, as cache::clear does. They're made again when next drawn.
  • A file replaced while its layer is still on the map (possible on Linux and macOS) is still only read again after Reload Web Layers, as before.
  • The record of when each file was forgotten holds 64 files, as its paths come from command parameters. When it fills up it's emptied, and any MBTiles tile or metadata read asked for before that is read again. So after 64 forgotten files, a read of an unrelated file may run twice.
  • A file added again while an old metadata read of it is still running waits for that read, whose answer is then dropped, before a new read starts. On storage that stalls past 30 seconds, layer.addData refuses it and asks to retry, as with any stalled read of that file, and map.addTiles adds the layer whose source then reports that error. This comes from reading the code and hasn't been reproduced.
  • Connections close when a command reaches the engine. A layer that goes away without one isn't noticed until the next one. A search of crates/ui-egui/src for direct changes to a map's tiles or the project's maps found none.

Testing

On Windows 11:

  • A throwaway test read a tile through the real path (cache::get_tile, then read_local) and tried to rename the file after each step:

    Step Connection kept Rename
    map.addTiles yes error 32
A tile read through the cache yes error 32
Another command, layer on the map yes error 32
    map.removeTiles no ok
edit.undo, layer back, nothing read yet no ok
    project.new no ok
  • New mbtiles_files_are_let_go_of_with_their_last_layer (engine) covers a layer on the map keeping its connections, removal, undo and project.new, then deletes the file. Without the Session::run call it fails at the layer removed.

  • That test also covers a file with two layers: removing one keeps the connections.

  • New a_replaced_mbtiles_file_is_read_again (engine) removes the layer, replaces the file and adds it again, then checks the metadata, the style's credits and the tile. Before this fix, a throwaway test showed the old metadata and tile until cache::clear. With the source::forget call taken out, the new test fails on the style's credits.

  • New a_forgotten_mbtiles_file_drops_the_tile_being_read (tiles, cache.rs) and a_forgotten_file_rejects_only_its_own_older_completion (tiles, mbtiles.rs) cover reads under way. They call land and remember_info directly, as timing a real read against a removal wouldn't be reliable. The first also covers the same tile being asked for again before the old read lands, in either order.

  • New a_full_record_of_forgotten_files_has_older_tiles_read_again (tiles, cache.rs) covers the bound on that record. Without its check in land it fails.

  • New close_unless_leaves_the_files_it_keeps (data).

  • Not tried in a real window: these checks run through Session and the tile cache, without the desktop app or Explorer.

  • On main at 98e61551: cargo test --workspace --no-fail-fast gave 3,808 passed, 20 ignored, 1 failed. The failure is exports_run_on_another_thread, which also fails on that main without this change: on Windows, the path that test replaces in the answer's JSON has its backslashes escaped, so the replacement finds nothing. cargo xtask ci stops there, so its steps after the tests didn't run.

  • Merged with main at 523d4d01, at the last commit: cargo fmt --all --check and clippy -D warnings (rustgis-data, rustgis-tiles, rustgis-engine, rustgis-ui-egui) pass. The first three crates' tests gave 1,886 passed, 16 ignored, 0 failed, in one run.

  • Merged with main at 4cf953eb, one fix earlier: those three crates' tests gave 1,839 passed, 16 ignored, 1 failed. Run whole, rustgis-tiles then failed 1 of 30 times (live_connection_bindings_separate_requests_and_cache_entries, new on main), and that didn't recur in 60 more runs, here or on 4cf953eb. Taking the tile check out of land made a_forgotten_mbtiles_file_drops_the_tile_being_read fail (tried before the merge). Tests that failed here, in this run or earlier ones:

    • service_logins::a_reopened_http_raster_recovers_its_pixels_after_login_without_reloading_unchanged_paths, new on main. Run alone in turns, it failed 5 of 40 times here and 8 of 40 on 4cf953eb, with the same message.
    • mbtiles_archives_frame_the_map_on_their_bounds, which fails now and then on Windows when the whole engine suite runs. So does pmtiles_archives_frame_the_map_on_their_bounds. In 6 alternating runs, the PMTiles test failed in 5 here and 2 on 27bb1a8e, the MBTiles test in 2 here and 0 on 27bb1a8e, which is too few to tell the rates apart. Both read metadata that any cache::clear drops, and hostile_params_never_panic_4 calls cache::clear 156 times per run. A throwaway test clearing the cache without a pause made both fail in 10 of 10 runs, here and on 27bb1a8e alike, at the same lines; clearing every 30 ms made neither fail. The log of one failing run here shows 10 reads rejected, all after a cache::clear and none by a forgotten file.
    • geoparquet_with_and_without_a_covering (failed to fill whole buffer), once. It didn't fail again in 13 reruns, and this PR doesn't touch that code.
  • On CI at 6ca7b314, fetches_through_the_fetcher_once failed on Ubuntu. The same test also failed on feat(engine): batch geoprocessing runner (gp.batch) #1458 and fix(data): read a GeoPackage coordinate system from its WKT definition when it has no EPSG code #1480, and main has a test that calls cache::clear beside it (bindings_isolate_connections_and_revoke_generations, from 98a72012). Before the merge above, this branch didn't have it but CI's merge did.

  • rustgis-ui-egui library tests at the last commit: 670 passed, 1 failed, leaving out record_tests::an_anonymous_download…, record_tests::whitespace_downloads… and mapgpu::tests::parity_vector_tile_meshes, which hang or fail on this PC on a clean main. The failure is record_tests::a_landed_download_says_how_it_went_in_the_dialog: its test server got no request in 10 s. In the whole suite it failed 6 of 6 runs here and 6 of 6 on 4cf953eb; alone it passed 8 of 8 before this merge and 4 of 4 after it.

  • The wasm build wasn't checked locally (zstd-sys doesn't build here); that's left to CI.

🤖 Generated with Claude Code

The pool of SQLite connections keeps up to four per file until the process
ends or the tile cache is cleared. Windows won't move or delete a file
SQLite has open, so a file a map had drawn stayed locked after its layer was
removed, for the rest of the session.

Each command run by itself now closes the connections to files no layer of
the project names, however the layer went (removed, undone, the project
closed). A file stays open while a layer on a map reads it, as opengeos#1436 expects.

Walkthrough

Native command execution now forgets cached MBTiles data and closes connections for archives no longer referenced by project tile layers. The change adds per-archive invalidation, connection-pool helpers, lifecycle tests, and documentation about the Windows file restriction.

Changes: MBTiles connection lifecycle

Layer / File(s) Summary
Archive invalidation and cache handling
crates/data/src/mbtiles.rs, crates/tiles/src/mbtiles.rs, crates/tiles/src/cache.rs
The file pool can retain connections by path and report whether a path is open. The tiles modules resolve archive addresses, invalidate cached MBTiles metadata and tile entries, and close connections for forgotten or unused archives. Tests cover connection pruning and stale cache completions.
Command cleanup and lifecycle coverage
crates/engine/src/lib.rs, crates/engine/src/tests.rs, docs/user-guide/data-formats.md
Native command execution snapshots the MBTiles paths used by project layers, then forgets data and closes connections for paths no longer referenced. Tests cover layer removal, undo, project replacement, and reading replaced archive data. The guide documents the Windows restriction on moving or deleting a file while its layer is drawing from it.

Possibly related issues

  • opengeos/RustGIS#1477: The change invalidates MBTiles archive state and rejects stale tile reads, which overlaps with the issue’s archive refresh and stale-read objectives. It does not implement the user-facing reload action or file change detection.

Possibly related PRs

  • opengeos/RustGIS#1195: Both changes modify how MBTiles metadata reads are cached and invalidated.
  • opengeos/RustGIS#1436: Both changes address pooled MBTiles connections keeping files open; this change releases connections when no project layer references an archive.

Merge Risk: Low · up to 9ad66

The change releases MBTiles file locks when the last layer is removed, and replacing the file then reads fresh data. A few edge cases can leave a connection open until the next command, which matters mainly on Windows and only for in-flight reads or multi-session scripts. These are documented as known limits and are acceptable for merge, with owner awareness.

Code review

I found no bugs, security problems or wasm breaks. Two small quality points are posted inline. Nothing in the PR's main path is wrong: the close-unused call, the keep set and the path handling all match what the readers open.

Bugs

  • None found. I checked the close_unless pool logic and its generation counter, the archive_file() keep set against the reader's address form, and the Session::run call placement (after run_command, and skipped for nested runs, which the outer call covers). The keep set matches what the readers open. A close during an in-flight read drops that connection rather than returning it, so there is no stale reuse. (Confidence: high.)

Security

  • None. Path handling is the same as before (file_of now shares one definition with read_local and read_info). No new input paths. (Confidence: high.)

Performance

  • Negligible. Session::run now takes the pool mutex once per top-level command, and the pool holds at most 16 files. A removal bumps the generation, which can drop in-flight connections for files still in use, but that only costs a reopen. (Confidence: high.)

Quality (both posted inline)

  • crates/tiles/src/mbtiles.rs:235: close_unused takes an Iterator + Clone and re-walks the project for each pooled file. Collecting the kept paths once is simpler and needs no Clone bound. Suggestion block included. (Confidence: high.)
  • crates/engine/src/tests.rs:25720: stays_open passes if any of 100 observations finds the file open. That is a workaround for the process-wide pool, and it's weaker than the assertion message says. It still catches the regression that matters. (Confidence: medium.)
  • Both new tests (engine and data) delete their temp files only on success. A guard would clean up after a failed assertion. Grouped here as a nit, not posted. (Confidence: high.)

AGENTS.md

  • Compliant. No unwrap/expect/panic in non-test code. The new calls are cfg-gated to not(wasm32), and file_of is only used in cfg-gated functions, so the wasm build is unaffected. The user guide is updated. No new dependencies. Test-only unwrap is fine. No silent-loss issue, since closing connections drops no data. (Confidence: high.)

close_unused collects the paths it keeps instead of walking the project
for each pooled file, which also drops the Clone bound. The two new
tests remove their files through a guard, so a failed assertion leaves
nothing behind, and the note on the retry says what it does and doesn't
check.

Code review

Bugs

  • Low, confidence medium: a tile read that starts after its layer is removed re-pools the connection at crates/data/src/mbtiles.rs:337, outside this diff. The file then stays locked until a Session::run, and UI-only ui.* actions don't trigger one. Posted inline at line 358. The PR's Known limits says "until the next command", which doesn't cover this case.

Security

  • None found. The new code only closes and checks pooled connections and never parses new input.

Performance

  • None worth raising. close_unused runs after every command, but it builds a small list and takes the pool lock briefly. The generation bump drops in-flight connections only when something is actually removed.

Quality

  • Nit: is_open is a public rustgis_data API that only the engine test uses. It is kept as test support, which is reasonable. Left for the release quality pass.

AGENTS.md

  • No violations found. There are no unwraps in non-test code, and the file_of / read_local wasm gating holds. The engine call is gated to non-wasm, and TileKind and render::rustgis_tiles::mbtiles resolve. The unwraps in the tests are allowed by clippy.toml.
  • The new docs sentence, "until its layer is removed", holds in practice. The removal command itself runs close_unused right after it, so the file is released at once.

Checked and fine

  • Pool keys match: archive_file() and read_local both go through file_of, so close_unused keeps the right files.
  • OfflineArea.data is a feature snapshot, not a tile layer, so project.maps covers every MBTiles layer.
  • The UI open and undo paths go through Session::run. Nested calls (depth > 0) are closed by the outer command.
  • The engine test's metadata read is safe: map.addTiles waits for info_ready to finish before it returns.

Already raised, left alone: two prior threads, on the stays_open retry and on the close_unused iterator bound. Both are resolved and addressed in 1e54f75, so I did not repeat them.

Scope: I could not compile or run the tests because I had no shell. The findings above come from reading the code.

Code review

I read the full diff, the base-branch AGENTS.md, the prior review threads, and the surrounding code: the pool in crates/data/src/mbtiles.rs, read_local/check/template in crates/tiles/src/mbtiles.rs, Session::run in crates/engine/src/lib.rs, and the TileLayer url and archive_file path in crates/map. I could not compile or run the tests (read-only). The PR reports Linux and Windows test runs. I found no blocking issues, so I posted no inline comments. The nits are grouped below.

Bugs: None that survive verification. I checked these:

  • Pool keys match the kept set. spec.url reaches template and read_local unchanged, and check requires an absolute path, so relative keys can't diverge. Confidence: high.
  • close_unused runs only at depth 0, after run_command. Undo and project restore happen inside run_command, so the kept set is current. Confidence: high.
  • The GENERATION logic in with() still holds. Closing a kept file only costs a reopen. Confidence: high.
  • The cfg(not(wasm32)) gating is consistent across file_of, close_unused, close_unless, is_open, and the engine call site. Confidence: high.

Security: None. The change only closes connections and does not parse new input.

Performance: None. The per-command cost is one walk of the maps' tiles and one pass over at most 16 pooled keys. Confidence: high.

Quality (nits, for the release quality pass):

  • The committed engine test reads through tile_path directly, not through the real tile path (mbtiles::template → read_local → file_of). The claim that the pool keys and the kept set "can't differ" is supported by reading the code, not by a test. Confidence: medium that a gap exists; low that it matters.
  • is_open can return true for a kept file with no handle open. This happens when a read that was in flight across a generation bump drops its connection and leaves an empty key behind. It is a test-only helper with no effect on the fix. Confidence: medium.

AGENTS.md:

  • Compliant. Non-test code has no unwrap or unsafe, the test unwraps are fine, no new dependency, no UI text, and no layering violation.
  • Documentation (data-formats.md) says the file stays locked "until its layer is removed". The PR's own Known limits say a queued read can hold it until the next engine command. The doc could say so. Confidence: medium. Nit.

Earlier review threads: I left 4 earlier concerns alone: the stays_open retry wording, the temp-file cleanup guards, the read-after-removal limit, and the collect-once suggestion. Three are resolved in 1e54f751, and the read-after-removal limit is acknowledged in the PR text.

Cross-session cleanup can drop connections that another session still uses.

close_unused receives only the archives of self.project, but the connection pool is process-wide. A command in one Session can therefore close pooled connections that another Session in the same process still reads. The next read from that session reopens the file. Consider a process-wide count of archives across live sessions before pruning.

Dropping a Session that read MBTiles tiles leaves those connections in the process-wide pool. Nothing closes them until another Session::run in the process reaches close_unused. On Windows, the file stays locked until then. Add pool cleanup to session teardown, or document this limit.

Add a shared-archive case to the last-layer test.

The test adds one layer on one archive. It does not cover a file that stays open while a second layer on the same archive still refers to it.

Add an overlay on the same archive after the first stays_open check. Remove index 0, which is the overlay, and check the file with stays_open. Use stays_open rather than a single is_open assertion, because another test can close the shared pool at any time. The existing map.removeTiles call then removes the remaining layer, and its !is_open assertion is unchanged.

Select the layer by index. map.removeTiles with empty params removes every tile layer.

🧪 Suggested test addition
     assert!(stays_open(&mut s), "a layer on the map keeps its connections");
+    s.run("map.addTiles", &json!({"url": path.display().to_string(), "kind": "mbtiles", "overlay": true})).unwrap();

Now that a file can be replaced once its last layer goes, adding it back
showed the old file's metadata, style and tiles until Reload Web Layers.
Session::run now calls cache::forget for a file a command took off the
project, and cache::forget covers MBTiles files.

is_open no longer counts a file with no connection left, and the
let-go test covers a file with two layers.

Code review

Bugs

  • Medium-low confidence: forget_archive returns early when no metadata entry exists. If a metadata read is still running when the layer is removed, its result is cached after the removal. Re-adding a replaced file can then show old zooms and credits until the cache is cleared. Posted inline on crates/tiles/src/mbtiles.rs:112-119, with a fix that bumps EPOCH first. This is a narrower variant of the earlier metadata-cache thread, which is fixed for finished reads.

Security

  • Nothing found. The new paths reuse the existing check and file_of handling, and no new input is parsed.

Performance

  • Low confidence: cache::forget runs for each removed MBTiles file and calls warp::forget(). Via forget_archive, it also calls source::forget(), which clears every layer's resolved style, not just this file's. Cheap in practice, but scoping it would avoid collateral invalidation.

Quality

  • close_unless could use if all.keys().any(|path| !keep(path)) instead of !…all(…).
  • is_open is public only for the tests. This is acceptable because the engine tests need it, but it is worth a comment.
  • a_replaced_mbtiles_file_is_read_again writes the max zoom into attribution to tell the old and new files apart. Using a distinct attribution string would make the test easier to read.
  • These are quality points, so per AGENTS.md they can wait for the release quality pass. I have not posted them as inline comments.

AGENTS.md

  • No violations found. No unwrap, expect or panic in non-test code. The new calls are gated for wasm, and cache::resource_of uses is_tile, which is available on every target. No new user-visible strings, and no lossy path that needs a notice.

Prior threads: six threads already exist. I left five alone: the two answered known limits, the stays_open note, the Clone bound, and the empty-entry fix, which are all addressed. I re-raised one variant of the metadata-cache thread, as described above.

A file is forgotten when its last layer goes, and it may be replaced next, so
a read of it still under way mustn't be kept:

- Its metadata: each file now has the epoch it was forgotten at, which older
completions of that file can't pass. Reads of other files are kept, as they
  may be framing a map.
- Its tile: the pending slot goes with the rest, and `store` drops a tile of an
MBTiles file whose slot is gone.
- Its style: forgetting no longer depends on a metadata entry, which the
64-entry clear may have dropped while the style stayed.

The replaced-file test now waits for the style, as it does for the tile.

Code review

Bugs

  • Stale tile can persist after a layer is removed and re-added during an in-flight read (crates/tiles/src/cache.rs:1036, confidence medium-low). The store guard drops a result only when its slot is gone. If the layer is re-added and the same tile requested before the old read finishes, the old result overwrites the new one. Re-raised from the earlier thread on this line because the code changed and the case is still open; posted inline.

Security

  • None found. Paths are validated by check before they reach the pool, and the new code doesn't parse untrusted input.

Performance

  • None significant. close_unused and the path clones run once per Session::run, over at most 16 pooled files.

Quality

  • forget_archive's doc says it forgets "the styles made from it" and that reads of other files are kept. It actually calls source::forget(), which drops every resolved style (confidence high). Left for the release quality pass.
  • a_forgotten_file_rejects_only_its_own_older_completion says an address that isn't an MBTiles file "changes nothing", but no assertion checks that (confidence high). Nit.

AGENTS.md

  • No violations found. Test-only unwrap and panic are allowed by clippy.toml. New non-test code uses unwrap_or_else on locks, and the wasm gating is correct (read_local and file_of are native-only).

I checked the MBTiles cache, pool and engine logic by reading them, and did not compile or run the tests.

Prior reviews: 9 threads. I re-raised 1 (cache.rs:1036) and left 8 alone. Of those 8, 4 are resolved fixes in the current code, 2 are declined items recorded in "Known limits", and 2 are the unresolved queued-read and metadata items that the author has documented.

`store` dropped a tile only when its slot was gone, so a read begun before the
file was forgotten was kept once the same tile had been asked for again, and
could overwrite the newer read's tile until the cache was cleared. Windows
doesn't rule this out: the file's connection is closed before the tile is
decoded and stored.

An answer now knows the epoch its fetch began at, and one of a file forgotten
since is treated as unanswered. `cache::forget` records that first, so no
answer falls between that and the slots going. Forgetting every file no longer
empties the record, since reads under way must still be told apart afterwards.

Also says in `forget_archive`'s comment that every file's styles go, and checks
that an address that isn't an MBTiles file records nothing.

Code review

I read the full diff, the prior review threads, and the surrounding code in cache.rs, mbtiles.rs (tiles and data), and engine/lib.rs. I did not build or run the tests, since this environment has no shell. Everything below comes from reading the code.

Bugs

  • Medium: land() in crates/tiles/src/cache.rs removes a newer request's Pending slot when an overtaken read lands. Re-requesting the same tile then starts a duplicate read. No wrong data is shown. Posted inline with a suggestion. The fix is in the new code, so it is not a repeat of a prior thread.
  • Low: forget_archive clears forgotten once it holds 64 entries. land() only consults forgotten_since and ignores CLEARED. A tile read begun before that clear can therefore land and be kept, which contradicts the "as after a clear" comment. This needs 64 distinct forgets while one read is in flight, so the risk is small. Confidence: low.

Security

  • None found. The new paths handle archive addresses through the existing check and file_of helpers.

Performance

  • None significant. The mbtiles_files scan and close_unless cost little per command. source::forget() now clears all resolved styles on each MBTiles layer removal; the PR documents this.

Quality

  • The PR body's "Known limits" bullet on a tile read under way showing the old tile is stale. The started epoch in land() now drops that completion, and a_forgotten_mbtiles_file_drops_the_tile_being_read covers it. The text should be updated, not the code. Confidence: medium.

AGENTS.md

  • No unwrap, expect, or panic in non-test code. No silent data loss. Lossy paths are not introduced. No user-visible strings were added. The docs change is consistent with the behaviour.

Earlier review threads

  • 10 threads were on the PR. I re-raised none. The same-key race (cache.rs threads) is addressed by the started epoch. The queued-read limit was declined by the author and is documented under Known limits. The other threads are resolved.

Three cases around a read of a file forgotten meanwhile:

- `land` checked first and stored later, so `cache::forget` could fall between
and the old tile come back. It now does both under the cache's lock, which
`forget` takes after recording the file.
- An old read that landed removed the newer read's pending slot, so the next
request read the same tile again. It now leaves the slot alone.
- The record of forgotten files was emptied at 64, and tile reads under way of
those files were then kept. It now isn't bounded: a path and a number per
file whose last layer went. Checking `CLEARED` instead would drop answers
after `cache::clear`, which keeps reads under way, and leave their slots
  pending.

Code review

Reviewed the 6-file diff, the prior-reviews.json threads, and the surrounding code in data/mbtiles.rs, tiles/mbtiles.rs, tiles/cache.rs and engine/lib.rs. I checked the lock order (infos → forgotten, and cache → forgotten, with no reverse path), the epoch arithmetic in forget_archive, remember_info and land, the wasm gating, and that the tests' dependencies and helpers exist. I found no crash path, no unwrap/expect in non-test code, and no silent-loss problem under AGENTS.md.

Bugs

  • crates/tiles/src/cache.rs:506: Answer.started is taken when the fetch launches, not when the tile was asked for. A tile queued before a layer removal but launched after it is kept and can serve the old file's tile after the file is replaced. Narrow window. Confidence: low (about 35%). Inline comment posted.

Performance

  • Removing an MBTiles layer now runs cache::forget → forget_archive → source::forget() (all resolved styles) and warp::forget() (warped-tile plans and "for now" pictures). Unrelated layers re-resolve on the next draw. The PR's Known limits mention styles but not warp plans. Confidence: low (about 30%). Not posted inline.

Quality (left for the release quality pass)

  • The a_forgotten_file_rejects_only_its_own_older_completion and stays_open tests use retry loops because the process-wide EPOCH and pool are shared across parallel tests. The workaround is documented but makes the assertions weaker than they read.
  • docs/user-guide/data-formats.md says the file stays locked "until its layer is removed". That omits the documented limit for queued reads and for layers removed through ui.* commands.

AGENTS.md

  • No violations found. Wasm gating is consistent (file_of, close_unused, and read_local are native-only; the new cache and mbtiles helpers are not gated and only use wasm-safe code).

Prior threads: 13 earlier threads are on this PR, all resolved. I left alone the ones already answered and accepted (the queued-read Known limit, the pool-without-kept-set suggestion, the multi-session pool note, and the earlier metadata, store-guard and style items that were fixed). I raised one new point, on started. I did not re-raise any answered concern without new evidence.

The epoch was read when the fetch left the queue, so a tile asked for before
the file was forgotten, and started after, counted as newer and was kept. It
is now read as the slot is made, under the same lock, and goes with the job.

Code review

Bugs

  • No new correctness bugs found. I checked the cache epochs (request → asked_at → land), the lock order (infos → cache → forgotten, with no inversion), the with/GENERATION pool logic, the resource_of key splitting, the Session::run cleanup (nested runs return early, and a panic leaves the project restored), and the wasm gating of the new file_of/read_local/close calls. Confidence in the absence of new bugs: about 80%.
  • Re-raised earlier concern: none. The earlier threads are either addressed in the diff or declined by the author with a stated reason. The one still open, a read that starts after removal re-pooling its connection, is declined under "Known limits" and I left it alone.

Security

  • None. Only local .mbtiles paths already accepted by check reach the new code. No new unwrap/panic in non-test code.

Performance

  • forgotten() in crates/tiles/src/mbtiles.rs:105 grows for the life of the process, keyed by a command-supplied path. I posted this inline. Confidence about 35%, and it is disclosed in the PR text.

Quality (nits, grouped; these can wait for the release quality pass)

  • crates/tiles/src/mbtiles.rs:25: the EPOCH doc says it counts metadata clears, but forget_archive also bumps it.
  • crates/tiles/src/mbtiles.rs:166: the remember_info comment says "no clear of its file", but CLEARED is set by a global clear.
  • docs/user-guide/data-formats.md: "until its layer is removed" is slightly stronger than the Known limits, which say a queued read can keep the file locked after removal. Confidence high.

AGENTS.md

  • The fix is Windows-specific (file locking), and the author ran the Windows tests locally. AGENTS.md asks for a ci:windows label on platform-specific changes before merge. The metadata I have does not show labels, so I could not confirm it is set. Confidence medium.

I left about 10 earlier concerns alone because they were already raised and addressed or declined in the threads.

@github-actions github-actions Bot removed the claude-autofix Apply to have Claude merge the base, resolve conflicts and fix review comments (re-add to run again) label Nov 5, 2026
Its paths come from command parameters, so it holds 64 files now and is emptied
when full. A tile asked for before that can't be told from one of a forgotten
file, so it goes as if unanswered: its slot is removed and it's read again when
next asked for. At worst a read runs twice; no slot stays pending and no old
tile is kept. This is apart from `CLEARED`, since `cache::clear` keeps the
reads under way.

Code review

I read the full diff, the prior review threads, and the surrounding code in data/src/mbtiles.rs, tiles/src/{cache,mbtiles}.rs, engine/src/lib.rs and map/src/tiles.rs. The design holds up. I traced the locking order (infos → forgotten, cache → forgotten, with forget_archive run before the cache lock), the epoch checks in land/remember_info, the generation check in with, and the wasm cfg gates. I found no correctness bug that the prior threads don't already cover.

Bugs

  • crates/tiles/src/mbtiles.rs:156 (low, medium confidence): the full-record check runs before the insert, so forgetting an archive that is already recorded, while the record is full, empties it for nothing. The cost is extra re-reads, not wrong data. Inline comment posted with a one-line suggestion.

Security

  • None found. Archive paths from command parameters go through check() before they reach the record, and the record is capped at 64.

Performance

  • crates/data/src/mbtiles.rs:343 (low, high confidence): close() bumps the process-wide GENERATION unconditionally, so forgetting one file discards in-flight reads' connections for every other file. This is minor. The bump is needed for the same file, so the fix would be a per-path generation rather than a conditional bump.

Quality

  • crates/tiles/src/mbtiles.rs:25 (nit, high confidence): the EPOCH doc says it counts metadata clears, but forget_archive bumps it too. Inline comment posted with a suggestion.
  • docs/user-guide/data-formats.md:675 (nit, medium confidence): "until its layer is removed" overstates the guarantee, because a read already queued when the layer goes can hold the file until the next engine command. The PR text and Known limits say this, so the user guide should too.

AGENTS.md

  • No violations found. No unwrap/expect/panic in non-test code, no unsafe, nothing silent, and no UI text or wasm-breaking code was added.

Prior reviews

  • I left all 15 earlier review threads alone: each was already raised and answered, or fixed in a later commit, and the code they point at hasn't regressed. This includes the queued-read re-pool limit, the stays_open retry, the forgotten-record growth, and the same-key race.

Forgetting a file already recorded only overwrites its entry, so a full record
needn't be emptied for it. Also says that `EPOCH` counts per-file forgets too.

Code review

Bugs

  • No new correctness bugs found. I checked the epoch ordering between request, forget_archive, land and remember_info, the lock ordering (infos → forgotten → cache), and the Session::run cleanup. All hold.
  • Inline comment posted on crates/tiles/src/cache.rs:508: when the record of forgotten files has been emptied, land can remove a newer read's Pending slot. The result is a duplicate read, not wrong data. Confidence ~50%.

Security

  • Nothing found. Paths from command parameters are bounded: check limits length and control characters, and forgotten is capped at 64 entries.

Performance

  • The inline comment above covers the one new item.
  • close() and forget_archive bump the global GENERATION even when nothing is pooled for that file. In-flight reads of other files then reopen instead of pooling. This is a deliberate trade-off for the file being read, so I'm not raising it. Low confidence.

Quality (nits, grouped; per AGENTS.md these can wait for the release quality pass)

  • The Job type doc in cache.rs still describes three fields, not the four it now carries (asked_at added).
  • The forgotten() doc ("Taken after [infos] and the cache's lock where they are held") is hard to parse.

AGENTS.md

  • No violations seen. No non-test unwrap/panic, the wasm cfg-gating is consistent, the new engine tests use the hostile_params pattern, and the docs change has no new strings or assets.

Already raised (left alone)

  • I did not repeat any concern already covered by a prior thread, including: queued reads re-pooling a connection after removal, the process-wide pool across sessions, the forgotten record growth and its emptying, test flakiness around stays_open and the shared pool, and the GENERATION and CLEARED interactions. Roughly 15 of the existing threads cover these, and I checked each against the current code.

Not verified

  • I did not compile or run the tests (no build in this environment). The compile-level references I checked by grep (tile_spec, rusqlite/image dev-deps, Resolve::Ready, Want/State/Payload) all resolve.

crates/engine/src/lib.rs: both kept. `Session::run` still sweeps the MBTiles
files around the command, and opengeos#1341's refused downloads and landed waits sit
inside that, with the sweep before the wait is told what was added.

Code review

I found no blocking problems. I checked the new Session::run cleanup, the pool close and generation logic, the epoch and forgotten-file record in cache.rs and mbtiles.rs, path normalisation (archive_file, file_of, template, parse_url), wasm gating, and the new tests against the code they exercise. I did not build or run the tests, since this review was by reading only. No inline comments were posted because nothing met the bar for one.

Earlier review threads (about 18) are all resolved or answered, and the current code still matches those answers. I left them alone.

Bugs

  • Low (about 25%): info_ready in crates/tiles/src/mbtiles.rs (around line 255) shares an in-flight metadata read by path. If a layer is removed and its file re-added while an old read is still running, the new add waits for that old read, up to its deadline, before a new read starts. The stale result is correctly discarded by remember_info, so no wrong data is shown. The only cost is a delay when storage is slow. I'd accept this as is.

Security

  • None found. Archive paths are bounded by check (4096 bytes, .mbtiles suffix, no control characters), the forgotten-file record is capped at 64 entries, and no new input parsing was added.

Performance

  • Negligible (high confidence): Session::run (crates/engine/src/lib.rs, around lines 1331 and 1365) walks every map and clones MBTiles paths on every engine command, and close_unused runs even when no MBTiles layer exists. The cost is a few small allocations per command, so I'm noting it only.

Quality

  • Nit (high confidence, for the release quality pass): the doc on remember_info (crates/tiles/src/mbtiles.rs, around line 187) says "no clear of its file". The check also rejects completions started before any full metadata clear or any emptying of the forgotten record (CLEARED), and those affect every file. Only the wording is off.

AGENTS.md

  • No unwrap, expect or panic in non-test code. The new locks use unwrap_or_else(|e| e.into_inner()), and there is no unsafe.
  • wasm gating holds: file_of, read_local, close_unused and the native close call are all behind cfg(not(wasm32)), and forget_archive and land compile on both targets.
  • Hostile input is bounded, and both new engine tests and the two tiles tests cover the behaviour they claim.
  • Docs were updated for the Windows note. No ribbon, UI text or asset changes, so the translation and attribution rules don't apply.
  • Nothing in the change drops or approximates data, so the "never silent" rule doesn't apply.
