Summary

Ordinary Buffer currently refuses more than about 15,500 point features because all output shares a two-million-vertex limit. Preserve the finer arcs and their accuracy, but separate geometry complexity from retained storage:

  • Ordinary Buffer: two-million-vertex limit per feature, plus a 512 MiB retained-output budget on desktop or 128 MiB in the browser. Account for geometry allocations, copied attributes and spare row capacity; copy attributes fallibly after charging their requested storage.
  • Process up to 256 features per parallel result batch, preserving order, generated ids, attributes and notices.
  • Dissolve All: preserve the cumulative pre-union limit, including multipoint discs, and the final dissolved-output check.
  • Distance selection: per-selector complexity limit, plus a byte budget covering geometry, row capacity, extent scratch and a conservative index-storage estimate. For more than 16 distance selectors, stop after 50,000,000 actual unique candidate checks across all targets, on both indexed and fallback paths; early matches still finish large jobs. Small selector sets and zero-distance behavior are unchanged.

These are retained-storage allowances, not total-process memory guarantees: loaded inputs, worker temporaries and overlay scratch are additional. No command parameters, dependencies or arc resolution change. General machine-scaled limits, cancellation and progress in #1291 remain separate.

Thanks to @pick2510 for the reproduction and measurements in #1227.

Testing

  • Baseline release CLI refuses 15,504 points with the reported vertex-budget error; the changed CLI completes the same input.
  • Single synthetic release CLI runs at fab4d29 on this Linux host (these Buffer and large-selector fallback paths are unchanged by the final adjustment), 5 km buffers, GeoJSON input, loading included and no export: 100,000 point buffers complete in 1.93 s at 242 MiB peak RSS; distance selection with 100,000 selectors completes in 1.98 s at 259 MiB peak RSS. Complete output counts were asserted. These are workload checks, not a direct comparison to the article's timings.
  • Small injected limits cover geometry/attribute/row storage, failure after earlier result batches, per-feature versus cumulative dissolve complexity, multipoint pre-union charges, selector-index storage, and inverted selection. Regressions verify exact candidate-check boundaries on indexed and fallback paths, no partial result including inversion, and the small-set/zero-distance exemptions. The small-set regression failed before its fix. Existing geometry/order/notice tests remain green.
  • All 274 analysis unit tests pass; cargo xtask ci, the wasm32 web build and pre-commit run --all-files pass.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Improvements
    • Buffering and distance-based layer selection enforce geometry-complexity and retained-memory limits. Requests that exceed a limit return an error rather than partial results.
    • Ordinary Buffer allows up to 2,000,000 outline vertices per feature and retains results in batches under a shared memory budget: 512 MiB on desktop or 128 MiB in the browser. Geometry, copied attributes, and spare row capacity count toward the budget.
    • Dissolve All retains a cumulative 2,000,000-vertex limit, including multipoint outlines and the dissolved result.
    • Distance-based selection applies limits per selector and includes retained geometries and spatial-index storage in its budget. With more than 16 selectors, it errors after 50,000,000 candidate checks across targets. Zero-distance selection remains unbuffered and exempt.

Walkthrough

Buffering and distance-based location selection now apply vertex-complexity and retained-memory limits. Ordinary buffers run in batches. Dissolve All retains cumulative vertex accounting. Excessive requests return errors instead of partial output.

Changes: Analysis storage budgets

Layer / File(s) Summary
Buffer complexity and retained storage
crates/analysis/src/tools.rs, docs/user-guide/analysis.md
Ordinary Buffer applies a 2,000,000-vertex limit per feature and a retained-output budget of 128 MiB on wasm32 or 512 MiB elsewhere. It processes features in batches of 256. Dissolve All retains cumulative accounting, including multipoint discs, and checks the final union. Tests cover output order, attributes, and budget failures.
Distance selector memory and checks
crates/analysis/src/tools.rs, docs/user-guide/analysis.md
Distance-based Select Layer By Location applies per-selector vertex limits and accounts for retained selector geometries, row capacity, extent scratch, and index storage. For more than 16 distance selectors, candidate checks across targets are limited to 50,000,000 on indexed and fallback paths. Zero-distance selection bypasses these charges and the check limit. Tests cover budget and check-limit errors, including inverted selection.

Low (Performance/Quality), confidence ~70%. The spatial index's grid is allocated by ExtentIndex::new before storage.charge(index.storage_bytes()) runs on the next lines. So the byte budget can refuse a selection only after the grid already exists, even when the remaining budget is zero. The overshoot is bounded by ExtentIndex::MAX_REFERENCES (1M cell references, roughly tens of MB at most), so this is not a crash or unbounded-growth risk. It does mean the budget is not a hard ceiling for the index. If that matters, the fix is to estimate the reference count before building the grid, which is a larger change than a one-line suggestion.

Confirmed: the grid is allocated before its retained-storage charge. Construction is independently bounded by MAX_REFERENCES, and the charge rejects an excessive result before selection runs; the documented allowance is not a total-process or temporary-allocation ceiling. Charging before grid allocation is left for the release quality pass.

Code review

I read the full diff (crates/analysis/src/tools.rs, docs/user-guide/analysis.md) against the base-branch guidelines, and checked the helpers it depends on: geodesic_buffer_with_limit, Dataset::push, Features, chunk_memory, ExtentIndex, parallel::try_map, try_clone_value, and Value. I found no correctness, crash, or silent-data-loss bugs. I could not compile or run the tests (no shell here), so the build and test results below rest on reading the code and on the PR's own CI claims.

There were no prior review threads, so no concerns were skipped as already raised.

Bugs: None found. Checked and sound:

  • Batch-wise charging in buffer_rows and select_by_location_with_limits (reserve and charge) cannot underflow or wrap, and returns errors rather than partial output.
  • geoms.len() - features.len() cannot underflow.
  • Ids are 1..n, which matches push_with_new_id. Assigning out.features directly is safe because copy_schema returns an empty dataset and From<Vec<Feature>> resets the max_id cache.
  • Value's only heap-owning variant is Text, so feature_bytes covers every heap allocation a row can have.
  • Attribute truncation and padding match the old Dataset::push behaviour.

Security: None. No unsafe, no unwrap/expect/panic in new non-test code, and no new input parsing.

Performance: One low-severity point, confidence about 70%, posted inline on crates/analysis/src/tools.rs:2363. The spatial index's grid is allocated before its byte charge is taken, so the budget cannot prevent that allocation. The overshoot is bounded by MAX_REFERENCES (1M references), so this is not a hard-ceiling or crash risk. Thread spawns are one per 256-feature batch, which is acceptable.

Quality (for the release quality pass, not blocking):

  • selector_heap_bytes falls back to _ => 0. It is unreachable today because to_geo emits only four variants, but a future variant would be silently under-charged. Confidence about 50%.
  • Test names are stale. buffer_vertex_budget_covers_features_and_multipoint_discs and location_selection_bounds_accumulated_buffer_outlines now describe per-feature and per-selector limits, not cumulative ones.
  • BUFFER_STORAGE_ERROR is also returned for allocator failures in try_clone_value, which the message does not describe. Minor.
  • source/memory.rs and source/chunk_memory.rs hold identical geometry_bytes and feature_bytes. This predates the PR and is not part of it.

AGENTS.md: Compliant as far as I can see.

  • Hostile-input handling is in place, and the budget errors are returned rather than dropped silently.
  • The notices for skipped features are unchanged.
  • The wasm budget uses cfg!, so the code builds for wasm32.
  • No stale references to the old helper names or to the old single-budget docs remain.
  • The docs match the code's behaviour.

I left no prior concerns alone, because there were none to leave alone.

The future-proof accounting fallback, test names and allocation-error wording are left for the release quality pass. The existing accounting duplication predates this PR and remains outside its scope. The bounded index-allocation point is acknowledged in the inline thread.

Nitpick Make the late-batch assertion prove that the first batch fits.

5150-5150: 📐 Maintainability & Code Quality | 🔵 Trivial | ⚡ Quick win

Make the late-batch assertion prove that the first batch fits.

The assertion at crates/analysis/src/tools.rs:5150 checks only that buffer_with_limits fails with "memory budget". buffer_rows returns BUFFER_STORAGE_ERROR for every storage failure, so a failure in the first batch also passes this check. The comment at lines 5148-5149 says the failure follows earlier batches that fit, but no assertion checks that.

Add checks that pin the boundary at first_batch_bytes:

  • A dataset of exactly BUFFER_BATCH features succeeds with first_batch_bytes.
  • A dataset of BUFFER_BATCH + 1 features fails with "memory budget" at the same budget. The extra feature needs a second batch, and the first batch uses the full budget.

Use the same setup and budget for both checks so the test establishes that the

The additional assertion proving that exactly the first batch fits is left for the release quality pass. The existing test continues to cover rejection without partial output; no source change was made for this quality suggestion.

Medium (regression), confidence ~75%. With 16 or fewer selectors the grid is never built (ExtentIndex::new returns early at extents.len() <= 16), so every target that misses scans all selectors. Each of those cheap misses decrements remaining_checks, so the 50,000,000 cap effectively becomes targets × selectors <= 50M on this path. For example, 10 buffered selectors over 5 million target points, or one selector over 50 million points, now fail with the "unindexed selector checks" error. The same input succeeds before this PR. That also contradicts the docs sentence at docs/user-guide/analysis.md:234 ("not a limit on the product of the input counts").

Possible fix: count only the expensive test, the s.intersects(&gg) call that runs after the extent prefilter passes, and reword the docs to match what is counted. The cap would then bound polygon tests rather than cheap rejections. Either way, the cap bounds the number of tests, not their total cost, so a very large selector can still make the scan slow.

Fixed in 83fd1a2. Selector sets of at most 16 now retain their deliberately unindexed, bounded-width linear behavior and do not consume the large-set work allowance. The threshold is shared with ExtentIndex. The small-set regression failed before this change and passes now, including with a zero injected allowance.

Code review

I read the full diff (crates/analysis/src/tools.rs and docs/user-guide/analysis.md) against the staged base-branch AGENTS.md, the prior review threads, and the surrounding code: ExtentIndex, chunk_memory, Dataset/Features, Value, and geodesic.rs. I did not build or run the tests, so compile and CI status are unverified.

Bugs

  • Medium, ~75% confidence: With 16 or fewer selectors, no grid is built, so every missed target scans all selectors. Each of those cheap misses counts against the 50,000,000 unindexed-check cap, so the cap becomes effectively targets × selectors ≤ 50M. Ordinary inputs such as 10 selectors over 5M points now fail, though they succeeded before this PR. The docs sentence "not a limit on the product of the input counts" is therefore wrong for misses. Posted as an inline comment with a suggested fix.

Security

  • None found. No new unwrap, panic, or unsafe in non-test code. Arithmetic uses saturating or checked operations, and the new paths return errors rather than panicking.

Performance

  • Low, ~35% confidence: The cap bounds the number of candidate tests, not their cost. Each test that passes the extent prefilter runs a polygon intersects against a selector that may have up to 2M vertices, so 50M such tests can still run for a very long time. This is covered by the inline comment.

Quality

These are left for the release quality pass per AGENTS.md; I did not post them inline.

  • The test location_selection_bounds_accumulated_buffer_outlines (tools.rs:6615) no longer exercises accumulation. Its name and first line of doc are stale, and its assertions now expect success.
  • try_reserve and try_clone_value failures map to the "exceed their memory budget" message, which is misleading when the allocator itself is exhausted. ~50% confidence.
  • buffer_storage_replaces_the_cross_feature_vertex_ceiling asserts only that an error occurs after the first batch's budget. It does not show that the first batch was processed.
  • docs/user-guide/analysis.md:235 is an overlong unwrapped line, unlike the surrounding paragraph.

AGENTS.md

  • No violations found. The new error strings are English-only, which matches the analysis crate, where no tl! calls exist. No new dependencies. No visible UI change, so no screenshots are needed.
  • Charging is consistent with the chunk accounting: Value has one heap-owning variant (Text), so chunk_memory covers all of it.
  • Dataset's cached max_id is reset by From<Vec<Feature>>, so assigning out.features directly does not desynchronise ids.

Prior reviews

  • Left alone: one earlier concern that the grid is allocated before its byte charge. The author replied and deferred it to the quality pass.
  • Not re-raised: one resolved thread about the unindexed scan, which this PR's cap addresses. My new finding concerns the new cap's behaviour and is not a repeat.

Major follow-up Count candidate tests on the grid path too, and keep zero-distance selection exempt.

2376-2376: Major · Stability & Availability · Quick win

Count candidate tests on the grid path too, and keep zero-distance selection exempt.

The grid branch of any_candidate visits every unique candidate in the queried cells with no counter. This PR raises how many distance selectors can share one dense cell. The grid path lacked this limit before the PR, but the PR allows much more work on it. Removing the bounded_scan gate entirely would also limit zero-distance selection. Gating on dist > 0.0 keeps zero-distance selection unbounded.

Indexed selection is documented as unchanged, and its test expects it to succeed with no check allowance. This change alters both, so update the test to use a nonzero allowance and revise the docs sentence.

Suggested fix
-    let bounded_scan = dist > 0.0 && index.grid.is_none();
+    let bounded_scan = dist > 0.0;

Addressed the indexed-path follow-up in 83fd1a2: for more than 16 positive-distance selectors, the 50,000,000-check allowance now covers actual unique candidates across all targets on both grid and fallback paths. Early matches still stop the scan; exhaustion discards accumulated selection, including inversion. Small bounded-width selector sets and zero-distance selection retain their previous behavior. Exact-boundary regressions cover 17 indexed selectors (18 checks succeed, 17 fail) and 2,000 clustered selectors that exceed the grid reference allowance (2,001 succeed, 2,000 fail). All 274 analysis tests, full CI, wasm and hooks pass.

Medium (behaviour change, ~80% confidence). The check cap applies to the indexed path too: bounded_checks only tests dist > 0.0 && selectors.len() > 16, not whether the grid was abandoned. any_candidate on a built grid calls test once per unique candidate, and remaining_checks is decremented for every candidate, including those rejected by the extent prefilter. So with 17+ overlapping buffered selectors, a job that succeeds today can now fail. Example: 20 clustered 5 km selectors with about 2.5 million target points inside the cluster gives roughly 20 candidate checks per target, about 50 million in total, and the request now errors.

This contradicts the PR description ("When the selector grid falls back to a scan…" and "Indexed and zero-distance behavior is unchanged"), and the docs at docs/user-guide/analysis.md:232-234 ("on both the grid and fallback paths"; "large input counts alone do not refuse a request"). The test distance_selection_bounds_actual_candidate_checks also asserts the grid path is capped. The code, tests and docs agree with each other, but the PR text does not.

Decide which behaviour is wanted:

  • If the cap should only bound the scan (the PR description), gate it on the grid being absent:
Suggested change
let bounded_checks = dist > 0.0 && selectors.len() > ExtentIndex::MAX_LINEAR_FEATURES;
let bounded_checks = dist > 0.0 && selectors.len() > ExtentIndex::MAX_LINEAR_FEATURES && index.cell_size().is_none();

Then update the grid assertions in distance_selection_bounds_actual_candidate_checks and the docs.

  • If the cap should cover both paths, change the PR description and the "unchanged" claim, and drop the "large input counts alone do not refuse" sentence from the docs, which is misleading when 17+ selectors miss on millions of targets.

The indexed-path limit is intentional: it addresses the dense-grid work-growth finding in #1305 (review). Code, boundary tests and docs now use the same policy: more than 16 positive-distance selectors share an actual-candidate allowance on either path; small sets and zero-distance selection retain their old behavior. The live PR description was updated to match before this review completed.

“Large input counts alone” distinguishes this from a preflight target-count × selector-count rejection: early matches stop traversal, so the same counts can complete with fewer checks. Exactly 50,000,000 checks are allowed; exhaustion occurs only on an attempted additional check. The indexed 18/17 and fallback 2,001/2,000 boundary tests cover that behavior. Extent-rejected candidates in large sets count intentionally, since visiting them is also the scan work being bounded. No source change is needed.

Code review

Bugs

  • Medium, ~80% confidence (posted inline at crates/analysis/src/tools.rs:2376): The 50,000,000 check cap also applies to the indexed (grid) path, not just the scan. This contradicts the PR description ("when the selector grid falls back to a scan", "indexed behavior unchanged"). With more than 16 overlapping distance selectors, a request that succeeds today can now fail. The docs and the distance_selection_bounds_actual_candidate_checks test match the code, so the PR text is the odd one out. The author needs to choose which behaviour is intended and align the code, tests, docs and description.
  • Low-medium, ~60% confidence (already raised; not re-posted): The earlier "cheap rejections count against the cap" thread is partly fixed. The > 16 gate at line 2376 means small selector sets are no longer capped, which resolves the ≤16 case. Above 16 selectors, the fallback scan still counts extent-rejected candidates. That only matters with roughly 1,000 or more overlapping selectors, so the impact is narrow.

Security

  • None found. The new code has no unwrap, expect, panic! or unsafe in non-test code. Budget arithmetic uses checked or saturating operations. The atomic charge cannot underflow or wrap.

Performance

  • None beyond the grid-path behaviour above. Batching and per-batch charging look sound. Ordering and ids in buffer_rows are deterministic, because try_map returns results in input order and ids are assigned after collection.

Quality (nits, can wait for the release quality pass)

  • The test location_selection_bounds_accumulated_buffer_outlines no longer tests accumulation, since the budget is now per selector. Renaming it would help.
  • docs/user-guide/analysis.md:236 is an overlong line, and the paragraph wrapping around it is uneven.
  • The earlier thread on charging the grid after allocating it (analysis/src/tools.rs index build) was answered by the author and deferred to the quality pass. I left it alone.

AGENTS.md

  • Wasm: cfg!-selected budgets, AtomicUsize and no std::time usage keep the code wasm-safe.
  • Never silent: budget and check exhaustion return errors and never partial output. Dissolve All and zero-distance behaviour is preserved.
  • Tests exercise the exhaustion and exemption boundaries, as the guidelines require.
  • Nothing in the diff violates the listed rules, beyond the PR-description mismatch above.

I checked 2 earlier threads and left 1 concern alone because the author answered it. Of the 3 threads, the ≤16-selector regression is addressed by the current gate, and the only remaining piece is the >16 fallback variant noted under Bugs.

The indexed-path limit and the already-updated PR description are explained in the inline reply; this is the intended response to the prior dense-grid finding. The test naming and paragraph wrapping suggestions remain left for the release quality pass.

Nitpick Add a 16-selector case that pins the unbounded boundary.

6680-6682: Trivial · Functional Correctness · Quick win

Add a 16-selector case that pins the unbounded boundary.

bounded_checks applies only when there are more than ExtentIndex::MAX_LINEAR_FEATURES selectors. The current distance-selection tests use 2 selectors and 2000 or 17 selectors. None uses exactly 16. A change from > to >= would bound 16-selector requests and still pass every current test.

Add a positive-distance test with exactly 16 selectors and a zero check allowance. It should return row 0 without an error. Under >=, the zero allowance would make the first candidate check fail with selector checks, so the test would detect that change.

The existing 17-selector assertions already cover the bounded side of the boundary, so this suggestion does not add a second 17-selector case.

Review comment at @crates/analysis/src/tools.rs around lines 6680 - 6682:
Add a distance-selection test alongside the existing selector-boundary tests
that creates exactly 16 selectors and uses a zero check allowance; assert it
succeeds and returns row 0. Keep the existing 17-selector assertions as coverage
for the bounded path, and do not alter the boundary condition itself.

The additional exactly-16-selector boundary assertion is left for the release quality pass. The implementation uses the shared index threshold; current coverage exercises exempt small sets and the bounded 17-selector path.

@coderabbitai full review

Please review the final implementation at 83fd1a2. Since the initial blocking review, actual candidate checks are bounded across both indexed and fallback paths for larger distance-selector sets; sets of at most 16 and zero-distance selection retain prior behavior. The substantive findings have been addressed with exact-boundary and red/green regressions. Local full CI, all 274 analysis tests, wasm and hooks pass. Remaining extra-test and wording suggestions are recorded for the release quality pass.
