Summary

Adds Buffer and Calculate Geometry to the analysis reference corpus (#916), and makes sure its answers can't be edited by hand.

New cases (40 in all, 8 new):

  • Calculate Geometry, polygons and lines: geodesic area, perimeter and length from GeographicLib. That includes the parcel with a hole, so its area loses the hole's and its perimeter includes the hole's ring. The reference measures each ring separately; pyproj's geometry_area_perimeter would leave holes out of the perimeter, and adds a hole's area unless the hole winds against the outer ring. RustGIS agrees to within 1e-9.

  • Buffer:

    • points at 1 km and 120 km;
    • the roads at 2 km;
    • a new 1,200 km line at 5 km, which the tool buffers in stretches;
    • the parcels at 1 km and at −2 km.

    The expected outlines are worked out from what a buffer is, every point within the distance on WGS 84, rather than from how the tool draws one. Each is built from GeographicLib discs along every edge's geodesic, joined together, and the script then measures from the outline back to the feature as a check. The tolerance is 1e-3 of the area: the documented 0.01 % projection error, plus room for arc edges.

All six Buffer cases fail, and #1159 has the details. A 2 km buffer of a 96 km road is up to 190 m off between its vertices, because long sides come back from the plane as straight lines. Arcs have 32 edges, so a point's buffer is 0.64 % short in area. The cases carry a known mark naming #1159:

  • the test passes while each still agrees within the mark's looser bound (10 %), so a buffer that breaks further fails it; --nocapture lists their differences;
  • once a case agrees, the test fails until its mark is removed from generate.py.

The fix belongs in its own PR.

generate.py --check writes the files to a scratch folder and fails if any committed file differs. A new workflow, reference.yml, runs it only when crates/analysis/tests/reference/ changes. The script now pins Shapely 2.1.2 and pyproj 3.7.2 exactly, with an exclude-newer date, so the answers can be reproduced byte for byte. Its self-checks run both ways: every outline vertex is the distance from the feature, and an outward buffer covers a disc round each sample along it. Before this change it already reproduced the 32 existing cases exactly.

Cost to every PR: no new test binary, and the reference test still runs in under 0.1 s. The Python check runs only on PRs that touch the corpus, as a separate job.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Tests

    • Expanded reference coverage for polygon areas and perimeters, road lengths, and buffers across points, stations, roads, long lines, and parcels.
    • Added tolerance-aware comparisons and reporting for known discrepancies.
    • Added a check that verifies generated reference data matches committed results.
  • Chores

    • Added an automated workflow to run reference-data checks on relevant changes and on demand.
  • Documentation

    • Clarified that geospatial reference measurements, including areas and lengths, use GeographicLib through pyproj.

Calculate Geometry's geodesic areas, perimeters and lengths are checked
against GeographicLib, ring by ring. Buffer outlines are checked against
GeographicLib discs along each edge's geodesic; the six Buffer cases are
marked known failures for opengeos#1159. generate.py --check fails when a
committed answer differs from what the script writes, and a new
workflow runs it when the corpus changes.

Walkthrough

The reference corpus now includes geodesic measurement and buffer cases. The test harness checks numeric values and geometry with case-specific tolerances. A new workflow runs a generator check that compares generated outputs with committed reference files.

Changes: Analysis reference corpus

Layer / File(s) Summary
Generate geodesic reference data
crates/analysis/tests/reference/generate.py, crates/analysis/tests/reference/layers/long.geojson, ATTRIBUTION.md
The generator adds geodesic area, perimeter, length, and buffer references, including inward polygon buffers and a long-line input. It validates buffer outlines and attributes the measurements and buffers to GeographicLib in PROJ through pyproj.
Compare reference cases
crates/analysis/tests/reference.rs, crates/analysis/tests/reference/cases.json, crates/analysis/tests/reference/expected/buffer_stations_120km.geojson
The test harness adds per-case geometry and numeric tolerances, loads the long-line layer, and reports known cases separately. The case definitions and expected station-buffer geometry add measurement and buffer comparisons. Buffer cases record the known outline discrepancy.
Check generated outputs
crates/analysis/tests/reference/generate.py, .github/workflows/reference.yml
The generator can compare temporary outputs with committed files and return a nonzero status when they differ. The workflow runs this check on configured pushes, pull requests, and manual dispatches.

Explanation

The title "test(analysis): reference cases for Buffer and Calculate Geometry" matches the main change. The PR adds Buffer and Calculate Geometry cases to the analysis reference corpus, and the title names both. It uses a conventional commit prefix and stays specific. It does not mention the generate.py --check script or the new workflow, which are secondary to the main change.

Explanation

The description follows the repository template. It has Summary, Testing, and Related issue sections. The UI evidence section is omitted, which the template allows because the change has no visible UI. The Summary explains what changed and why, including the new cases, the known-mark handling of the six failing Buffer cases, and the generate.py --check workflow. The Testing section lists the commands run and their results. The Related issue section links #1159 and says the PR is part of that issue.

Bug (confidence: high): a known case passes whatever it gets wrong, not just the known difference. Every problem it finds goes to eprintln! and never fails the test, so a regression in one of the six buffer cases stays silent. Example: the buffer tool returns an empty layer, or lines instead of polygons. check then returns "missing" or "kinds" problems, which are swallowed here, and the test still passes.

Also, eprintln! output from a passing test is hidden by the libtest capture unless the run uses --nocapture, so the "still differs" listing the PR describes won't show in a normal cargo test. The doc comment should say so.

A stronger guard would record the expected problem text for each known case and fail when it changes.

Fixed in d929521. A known case now has to agree within its mark's own tolerance (10 % for the #1159 buffers). Changing the line buffer's distance to 1.5 km fails the test with "differs beyond its known bound". The doc comment says --nocapture shows the differences.

Test coverage (confidence: medium): check_buffer only checks that sampled outline vertices sit |d| from the feature. That says nothing about coverage. A buffer missing a whole corridor or disc would have no outline vertices there, so the check passes. The docstring's "independent check" is therefore one-directional. Sampling feature vertices and checking they lie inside the buffer (or within |d|) would close the gap.

Minor: assert disappears under python -O, so these self-checks would be silently skipped. This matches the existing dist helper, so it's a nit.

Fixed in d929521. The check now runs the other way too: for an outward buffer, a disc of 0.999·d round every sample along the feature's edges has to lie inside it, and an inward buffer has to stay inside its polygon. The self-checks raise AssertionError explicitly, so python -O doesn't skip them.

Bugs

Security

  • Nothing found.

Performance

  • Nothing significant. The new buffer and geometry cases run in Python and only add a few hundred KB of committed expected output. The Rust side adds one loop per case.

Quality

  • eprintln! output from a passing test is hidden by libtest capture unless the run uses --nocapture, so the "still differs" listing won't appear in a normal cargo test. The reference.rs doc comment should say this. (reference.rs:325, confidence: high)
  • check_buffer only checks that sampled outline vertices sit |d| from the feature. It does not check coverage, so a buffer missing a whole corridor could pass. Checking feature vertices against the buffer would close that gap. (generate.py:248, confidence: medium)
  • Nits: assert is stripped under python -O, which matches the existing dist helper. numbers defaults tolerance to exact equality when the key is missing, which is silent. The reference.yml workflow has no permissions: block and cancels in-progress runs on main pushes.

AGENTS.md

  • Checked against the repo rules. The Rust test change has no unwrap/expect in non-test code. No Rust dependencies changed, so cargo xtask notices isn't needed. The new corpus files are covered by the existing ATTRIBUTION.md row. The workflow action versions match docs.yml and ci.yml. No violations found.

Checked and found consistent: the numbers branch's field names (area_km2, perimeter_km, length_km) match tools.rs. The compare_geometry signature change has one call site. generate.py --check covers every written file, and the known marks are applied consistently.

Check every outline vertex in check_buffer.

For a 360-vertex point buffer, cs[:: max(1, len(cs) // 12)] checks only every 30th vertex. A displaced unsampled vertex can survive the 1e-3 Web Mercator simplification tolerance and be serialized without validation. Check the complete outline.

…both ways

A case marked known must still agree within its mark's tolerance (10 %
for the opengeos#1159 buffers), so a buffer that breaks further fails the test.
The generator checks every outline vertex, and that an outward buffer
covers a disc round each sample along the feature (an inward one stays
in its polygon). A numbers entry that isn't an object is reported, and
generate.py refuses arguments other than --check.

Review follow-up in d929521:

  • The known-case bound, the both-ways buffer check and the explicit asserts are answered inline.
  • reference.yml now has permissions: contents: read. It cancels superseded runs the same way ci.yml does, main included.
  • numbers without a tolerance means exact equality on purpose. The generator writes a tolerance for every case it makes.
  • CodeRabbit's nitpick is also in d929521: every outline vertex is checked now, not every 30th. The script takes 55 s instead of 22 s, and only when the corpus changes.

Bug/test strength (medium-high confidence). The known bound is 0.1 of the polygon's area, but the mark and the issue text describe 10 % of the distance. So a buffer that drifts to ~9 % of its area still passes silently: the case only shows under --nocapture, and worse is empty. The "fails only if it gets worse" guarantee is therefore very loose.

Suggestion: measure the current worst xor fraction per case and set each known.tolerance just above it (for example 2×), so a regression is caught while #1159 is open. The mark's wording should match the unit actually compared.

The mark's text describes the bug as #1159 measures it, by how far the outline sits off. The bound is the share of area not shared, the same quantity as every other polygon case. The bound is there to catch a buffer that breaks, not a small drift: an empty layer, the wrong geometry kind, or a wrong distance (1.5 km instead of 2 km gives 0.26) all fail it. Per-case bounds wouldn't last long, since fixing #1159 makes these cases strict. Leaving it as is.

Quality (high confidence). zip(discs, discs[1:]) always yields at least one pair here, because along returns n + 1 >= 2 points. The or discs fallback is therefore unreachable, and it is confusing next to the list comprehension. Dropping it keeps the intent clear:

True, the fallback is unreachable. It's harmless, so I'll leave it for the release quality pass rather than push again.

Please verify (low confidence, about 30 %). The docstring says both ends are included, but the call passes initial_idx=0, terminus_idx=0. If pyproj's convention is that 1 includes an endpoint, these flags drop both endpoints. ring() at line 236 ([:-1]) and the corridor sampling would then lose a real vertex or leave endpoint discs uncovered. The author's run passing suggests the flags work, but I could not confirm pyproj's semantics here. A short comment, or a check that along(a, b, s)[0] == a, would settle it.

Checked: in pyproj the flags are the index of the first and last point to include, so 0 keeps both ends. along((10, 46), (11, 46.5), 1000) returns 97 points, from (10.0, 46.0) to (11.0, 46.5). The coverage check would also fail if an endpoint disc were missing.

Risk to the CI check (medium confidence). --check compares committed files byte for byte, and the JSON writes full-precision floats. GEOS and GeographicLib wheels for Linux (the reference.yml runner) and for macOS (the author's machine) can differ in the last ulp, which would make reference.yml fail on main even though the files are correct.

Suggestion: round coordinates and areas to a fixed number of decimals before writing, for example 9 decimals (about 0.1 mm of ground). The Rust test already compares within 1e-3 of area and 1e-9 relative, so this would not weaken it. It also shrinks the roughly 1.1 MB of fixtures.

The answers were generated on Linux, not macOS, and reference.yml has passed on GitHub's Linux runner on both heads, byte for byte. Shapely and pyproj are pinned exactly. If a runner image ever changes the last digit, the check fails visibly and the fix is rounding as you suggest. I'd rather not round ahead of a failure: full precision keeps the check exact.

Bugs

  • The known bound is 10 % of polygon area, but the mark and issue text describe 10 % of distance. A buffer drifting to about 9 % area error passes silently, so the "fails only if it gets worse" guard is weak. Confidence: medium-high. (reference.rs:331)
  • along() passes initial_idx=0, terminus_idx=0, while the docstring says both ends are included, and ring() relies on [:-1]. If pyproj treats 0 as "exclude", endpoints are dropped. I could not confirm pyproj's convention here. Confidence: low (about 30 %). (generate.py:205)

Security

  • None found. The workflow uses pull_request with contents: read and no secrets.

Performance

  • The known path runs check() twice per failing buffer case, which runs the buffer tool twice. Negligible at this size. Confidence: high, low impact.
  • The committed fixtures add about 1.1 MB of full-precision, indent=1 GeoJSON. This is worth shrinking; see the rounding suggestion below.

Quality

  • or discs in corridor() is unreachable, because along() always returns at least two points. Confidence: high. (generate.py:223)
  • check() mutates the module-global OUT instead of passing the output folder into main(). Confidence: medium, nit.
  • ring = lambda ... is an assigned lambda (PEP 8 E731). Nit.
  • The workflow has no timeout-minutes. Nit.

Reproducibility risk

  • --check compares byte for byte, and the JSON writes full-precision floats. Linux and macOS wheels of GEOS and GeographicLib can differ in the last ulp, so reference.yml may fail on main even when the committed files are correct. Suggested fix: round before writing, for example to 9 decimals. The Rust test's tolerances are far looser than that. Confidence: medium. (generate.py:510)

AGENTS.md

  • Compliant. No unwrap/expect was added to non-test code, the ATTRIBUTION.md row is updated, and the workflow action versions match the repo's convention.

Inline comments were posted on reference.rs:331, generate.py:205, generate.py:223 and generate.py:510. The nits are not posted separately.

Follow-up Comments

Minor follow-up Treat an empty numbers entry as a failure in the reference test.

249-252: Minor · Functional Correctness · Low value

Treat an empty numbers entry as a failure in the reference test.

In the numbers branch, an entry of {} passes the as_object guard and runs the field loop zero times. The feature's ID still matches, so the test passes for that feature without checking any measurement. The new problems.push only covers entries that are not objects. Add an empty check after the let-else:

Suggested fix
             let Some(fields) = numbers.get(&id).and_then(Json::as_object) else {
                 problems.push(format!("{id}: no measurements in the reference"));
                 continue;
             };
+            if fields.is_empty() {
+                problems.push(format!("{id}: no measurements in the reference"));
+                continue;
+            }

Review comment at @crates/analysis/tests/reference.rs around lines 249 - 252:
Update the numbers branch after the `fields` let-else to treat an empty object
as missing measurements: add a problem for that feature ID and continue before
the field loop.
Nitpick Check that outward polygon buffers keep their interior.

261-264: Trivial · Functional Correctness · Low value

Check that outward polygon buffers keep their interior.

For an outward buffer, check_buffer tests only the outline distances and discs along the source edges. An outline-only corridor passes both tests, so check_buffer accepts a result that has lost the polygon interior. The reference comparison still rejects such output for the current parcel layer, so this check guards the generator's own output.

Test a point more than |d| inside each polygon. A point closer to the outline can lie inside the outline corridor and miss the omission.

Suggested fix
     for q in pts:
         if not b.contains(disc(q, 0.999 * d, n=8)):
             raise AssertionError(("not covered", q, d))
+    if g.geom_type.endswith("Polygon"):
+ # Web Mercator stretches distances by 1/cos(latitude), about 1.5 at 46 to 48 degrees.
+ # Twice |d| in the plane is therefore more than |d| on the ground.
+        for part in shapely.get_parts(m(g).buffer(-2 * abs(d))):
+            if not b.contains(part.representative_point()):
+                raise AssertionError(("interior not covered", d))

- 264:
Update check_buffer to verify that outward buffers preserve polygon interiors:
for polygon geometries with positive d, sample representative points from an
interior core eroded by more than the buffer distance and assert that b contains
them. Keep the existing outline and source-edge coverage checks unchanged.
