test(engine): run everyday jobs end to end, and on Census data nightly - #1165
Adds tests that run everyday jobs from start to finish the way a user runs them: by command id, as the ribbon, CLI, Python and the AI Assistant do. Each result is checked against an answer worked out independently, then the result is saved, reopened and handed on as files, checking that nothing changed along the way.
crates/engine/tests/workflows.rs builds its own small data in Memphis: 12 parcels, two zones and an assessment CSV.
Join the CSV to the parcels by text ids with leading zeros (00101…). The CSV has a decoy row 101 that must not match, and one parcel has no row, so it must keep its row with no value.
Intersect with zoning, measure the pieces and total the area by zone. The totals have to match the closed-form ellipsoid area of each zone's rectangle (Snyder's eq. 3-12) to 1e-6, and to the acre.
Export a map PNG, then save and reopen the project: the same layers, pieces and totals.
Export the pieces to GeoPackage and the totals to CSV, and read both back. The parcel ids keep their zeros, each piece keeps its assessed value, and the areas and totals still match.
The map PNG is decoded and must draw more than its background.
A saved job gives identical output every time. The same steps as a model: run in two sessions, and again after the project is saved and reopened, they give byte-identical GeoJSON and CSV.
Bad input stops the job and leaves the data untouched. A model step naming a missing layer fails with a message that names it, and the project is unchanged apart from its run history. A file that isn't text is refused the same way.
On real data, nightly. One more case, #[ignore]d on PRs, uses the Census Bureau's TIGER/Line tracts and its Gazetteer, which are public domain. It cuts Tennessee to Shelby County and joins the Gazetteer's published land and water areas. Every one of the 249 tracts' geodesic area must match its published area to within 1e-5 (plus a square metre of rounding); the two agree to 4e-6, measured separately with GeographicLib. It then saves, reopens and exports to GeoPackage and checks the same.
nightly.yml gets a Linux job that downloads the two files (15.6 MB), checks each against a pinned SHA-256 and caches them.
A changed file fails the run.
A failed download skips the tests with a warning, and the report treats that night as incomplete: a census.gov outage neither opens nor closes the "Nightly build failed" issue.
The files stay on census.gov for now; moving them to assets.rustgis.app later means changing their URLs in the list.
The job's result feeds the existing nightly report.
docs/contributing.md › Test data now describes the file and gives the steps to run the real-data case locally.
Found on the way: the Gazetteer reads GEOID as a number while the tracts keep it as text, and Join Field matches keys of one type only, so the join fails with "key field type mismatch". The test does what a user has to: it copies the key into a number field first, with edit.addField and edit.calculateField, and a comment says why.
Cost to every PR: one new test binary, and its three tests run in 0.03 s. The real-data case runs only nightly, in about 1 s once its files are cached.
Added end-to-end checks for data joins, map generation, saving and reopening projects, and exporting results.
Added checks that failed runs and invalid inputs do not alter project data, layers, or tables.
Nightly checks now include pinned Census data when downloads are available. Checksum mismatches fail the check; download failures skip the data tests. Nightly status reflects both Rust and real-data test results.
Documentation
Updated contribution guidance with instructions for running the workflow tests, including the Census data test.
workflows.rs joins a CSV to parcels by leading-zero ids, overlays
zoning, totals area by zone against the closed-form ellipsoid area,
exports a map, saves, reopens and exports GeoPackage and CSV. A saved
model gives byte-identical output in two sessions and after a reopen;
bad input stops it and leaves the project untouched. An ignored case
checks Shelby County's 249 census tracts against the areas the Census
Bureau publishes; nightly downloads the pinned files and runs it.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
The PR adds generated-data engine workflow tests and an ignored Census integration test. The nightly workflow downloads and verifies Census data, runs the integration test when downloads succeed, and updates its report logic to use both Rust and workflow job results.
Adds tests for joins, intersections, area totals, map and data exports, project save and reopen, repeatable outputs, and failure cases that preserve project data apart from run history.
Census integration test and guidance crates/engine/tests/workflows.rs, docs/contributing.md
Adds an ignored Shelby County test that compares measured tract areas with published land and water areas. Documents the data files and local and nightly test execution.
Nightly data job and report .github/workflows/nightly.yml
Downloads two Census files and checks their SHA-256 values before running the ignored test. The scheduled report uses both Rust and workflow job results, and leaves the nightly issue unchanged if downloads prevent the test from running.

Full details: Title check
Explanation
The title names the main change: end-to-end tests for everyday engine workflows, plus a nightly real-data (Census) run. It matches the changeset, which adds crates/engine/tests/workflows.rs, an ignored Census test, and the nightly.yml download job. The title is concise, uses the conventional test(engine) prefix, and is specific enough for a teammate scanning history. It is 70 characters, slightly longer than ideal, but still clear.
Full details: Description check
Explanation
The description follows the template's Summary and Testing sections, and it lists concrete validation commands and results. The Summary explains the new workflow tests, the nightly real-data case, the nightly.yml download and checksum job, and the report change. The Related issue section references #1161 as a predecessor, which fits the template's intent. The UI evidence section is omitted, which is acceptable because the change has no visible UI. The description does not follow the template headings exactly (for example, it has no explicit Related issue 'Closes' or 'Part of' form), but the required information is present.

Bug (confidence: medium). When the Census download fails, the data step sets ok=false and the test step is skipped, but the workflows job still concludes success. This RESULT expression then maps it to success, so the report closes an open "Nightly build failed" issue with "Fixed: the nightly run ... passed", even though the real-data tests never ran. An outage can therefore close a real failure. A fix: expose the data step's ok as a job output and have the report leave the issue alone when the data was not fetched, rather than treating that as success or failure.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Fixed in 2ea78c0. The job exposes tested, the data step's result. When everything that ran passed but the downloads failed, the report's result is incomplete, and it neither closes nor opens the nightly issue.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Quality / fragility (confidence: low). The published areas are whole square metres (ALAND and AWATER are integers), so rounding alone can move land + water by up to 1 m². For a very small tract, that is already close to the 1e-5 relative bound. The measured 4e-6 agreement suggests the current data passes, but a small absolute floor keeps the test from depending on how big the smallest tract is:
Suggested change

.github/workflows/nightly.yml (inline): when the Census download fails, the job is skipped with a warning but still concludes success. The report then closes an open "Nightly build failed" issue as "Fixed", even though the real-data tests never ran. Confidence: medium.
Security
No issues found. Both downloads are pinned by SHA-256 and the checksum is verified after download. The workflow has no secrets and only reads from census.gov.
Performance
No issues found. The real-data case runs only nightly, and the three PR tests are small and in-process.
Quality
crates/engine/tests/workflows.rs:321 (inline): the tolerance is relative only, but the published areas are whole square metres. A one-metre absolute floor avoids depending on the size of the smallest tract. Confidence: low.
docs/contributing.md:161 (inline): the PR description says the section explains how to run the real-data case locally, but the paragraph has no local steps. Confidence: high that the text is missing.
Nits (no inline comments):
The check_totals comment says "the north-east parcels are in no zone". There is one such parcel, and it is the one with no assessment row.
Scratch::new labels are w1 and w3, with no w2.
outputs(...) == want uses assert!, which gives a poor failure message; assert_eq! would be clearer.
Value as Field sits beside serde_json::Value, which may confuse readers.
AGENTS.md
No violations found. The unwrap/expect/panic calls are in test code, which clippy.toml allows. The engine's other integration tests also use unwrap without allow attributes. There is no unsafe, no new dependency, no wasm impact (tests are not built for wasm), and no UI text.
I checked the test's step names, parameters and output names (selectByAttributes, joinField, summaryStatistics → FREQUENCY and SUM_<field>, share.exportTable with table, model.new with %1 placeholders, layer.addDataBytes error text). They match the engine code. The expected piece and zone counts (13, 9 and 4) match the geometry. I could not run the tests, so the Census assertions and the 4e-6 agreement claim are unverified here.

Assert value_usd after intersection and export.
The workflow checks value_usd only on assessed, before intersect. It does not verify that zoned retains the joined values or that the GeoPackage round trip preserves them. The separate intersect unit test does not cover this end-to-end path.
Add assertions for value_usd on zoned and after reopening the GeoPackage. A non-null integer check only verifies field presence, not value preservation.

Extend the workflow around check_totals and the zoned layer to assert the
expected value_usd values after intersection and again after reopening the

or is non-null.
The current check only proves that a PNG larger than 1000 bytes was written. Decode it with rustgis_render::decode_png and assert that the image contains pixels different from its background. This catches a blank export while keeping the assertion independent of exact rendering colors.
Suggested fix
let bytes = std::fs::read(&png).unwrap();
assert!(bytes.starts_with(b"\x89PNG\r\n\x1a\n") && bytes.len() > 1000, "a map came out");
+ let image = rustgis_render::decode_png(&bytes).expect("the exported PNG decodes");+ let background = image.pixel(0, 0).expect("the image has a corner pixel");+ assert!(image.pixels().iter().any(|pixel| *pixel != background), "the map contains drawn pixels");
This does not verify exact layer placement or extent, but it adds coverage against a blank or uniform export.

…issue
The nightly report treats a run whose real-data tests couldn't download
their files as incomplete: it neither opens nor closes the nightly
issue. The tract check allows a square metre of rounding on top of
1e-5. The workflow test checks one statistics row per zone, every
piece's assessed value through the overlay and the GeoPackage, and that
the map draws its layers. The contributing guide gives the local steps.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
The nightly report, the 1 m² floor and the local steps are answered inline.
The check_totals comment now describes the unzoned area correctly: the north-east parcel and the east half of its neighbour.
I've kept assert!(outputs(..) == want). assert_eq! would print hundreds of kilobytes of GeoJSON bytes, and the message already says which run differs.
The w1/w3 labels follow the job names in the comments; the Field alias avoids two Values.
CodeRabbit's follow-ups are in too: one statistics row per zone, every piece's value_usd checked after the overlay and after the GeoPackage, and the map PNG decoded and required to draw more than its background.

Bug (robustness), confidence medium.curl has no timeout, so a stalled connection to census.gov can hang this job until GitHub's default six-hour limit. The report job waits on workflows, so the nightly report is delayed too. Bounding the connect and total time turns a stall into the existing "download failed, skip" path.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Agreed, worth bounding. The next change to nightly.yml, the fuzzing job I'm preparing for #779, will add --max-time to these downloads and timeout-minutes to the job, rather than another push here.

Bug (test flakiness across platforms), confidence low-medium. Comparing .round() of two values fails whenever they straddle a half-acre boundary, even when they differ by only 1e-6 relative. The floating-point results of ln/sin can differ slightly between platforms, and the macOS and Windows PR jobs run this test. The intent is "within an acre", so test the difference directly:
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
The data is fixed, so the two totals don't move: R1 is 468.627 acres and C2 is 187.456, which is 0.127 and 0.044 acres from a rounding boundary. The largest difference the 1e-6 check allows is 0.0005 acres, about 100 times smaller than either margin. If the fixture ever changes, a straddling total would fail loudly, not intermittently.
steps[1] (line 274) silently depends on intersect being the second step of job_steps(). Looking the step up by tool name would survive reordering.
The scratch labels "w1" and "w3" (lines 181 and 243) skip "w2". Descriptive labels ("join", "identical") would read better in a failing temp-dir name.
The join test rewrites %1/%2 with string replace on the serialised JSON (line 184). Building the steps with the layer names directly avoids that round trip.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Quality, confidence high. The RESULT expression packs three outcomes into one nested &&/|| chain that reads as a puzzle. Because && and || return operands and not booleans, it is easy to misread. The same logic is clearer in the shell step that already reads $RESULT, where the three branches can be spelled out:
if [ "$RUST" != success ] || [ "$WORKFLOWS" != success ]; then RESULT=failure
elif [ "$TESTED" = true ]; then RESULT=success
else RESULT=incomplete; fi
with RUST, WORKFLOWS and TESTED passed in env. The behaviour is unchanged; the outcomes are just spelled out.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Docs, confidence high. "the checksums beside them" is unclear. The checksums are not beside the files; they sit next to their URLs in nightly.yml. Saying so makes the local instructions followable:

"Them" refers to the files listed in nightly.yml, whose checksums sit beside their URLs there. I'll make the wording explicit the next time this section changes.
The PR adds an end-to-end workflow test binary (crates/engine/tests/workflows.rs), a real-data nightly job for Census tracts, and a docs note. I found no correctness bugs that would break the tests or the nightly report. The download, checksum, and report-result logic behaves as the PR describes, including the "incomplete" path when a download fails. The findings are robustness and readability points, with inline comments on each.
Bugs
nightly.yml:90: curl has no timeout, so a stalled connection could hang the job for up to six hours and delay the nightly report. Confidence: medium. Suggested fix is inline.
workflows.rs:156: comparing .round() acre values can fail when the two values straddle a half-acre boundary. A difference-based check is more robust across platforms. Confidence: low-medium. Suggested fix is inline.
Security
None found. The checksums are pinned, the download URLs are hardcoded HTTPS, and no untrusted input reaches a run: block. Confidence: high.
Performance
None worth raising. The non-ignored tests run in about 0.03 s, and the real-data test is nightly-only.
Quality
nightly.yml:116: the nested &&/||RESULT expression is hard to read. The same logic is clearer in the shell step. Confidence: high. No behaviour change.
workflows.rs:282: the map used for side effects, the magic steps[1] index, the w1/w3 labels, and the string-replace step rewrite are minor nits. Grouped in one comment. Confidence: high.
docs/contributing.md:163: "the checksums beside them" is inaccurate. The checksums sit beside the URLs in nightly.yml. Confidence: high.
AGENTS.md
Test code may use unwrap/panic, and the lint attributes apply only to crate roots, so this complies. No new dependencies, no unsafe, no wasm or layering impact, and no UI text, so the translation rules don't apply.
Not checked: cargo fmt (the new file has lines near the 140-column max_width), clippy under -D warnings, and whether the engine behaviours the tests rely on hold. I could not run anything, so the tests are unverified here. The PR says they pass locally.
Observation (not inline)
The PR works around a join key-type mismatch in the engine rather than fixing it. Users still hit "key field type mismatch". Worth a tracked follow-up, since the test now encodes the workaround and would not catch a regression in the fix.
Change size
Compared with main (merge base 38f2433 to PR head 2ea78c0). Sizes are file sizes, not line counts.
Cover null preservation on an intersecting parcel.
The overlay check runs only on parcels that have assessments. Parcel 00112 has no assessment, but it touches zone C2 only along an edge and produces no piece. Every zoned piece therefore holds a non-null value. A change in intersect that replaces or alters a null joined value would still pass check_values(&zoned).
Remove the assessment for 00103 instead. That parcel straddles the R1/C2 boundary and yields two pieces. Both pieces then expect Field::Null, so the existing assertion checks null preservation through the overlay.

Update the assessment fixture used by `check_values` to omit parcel `00103`,
which straddles the R1/C2 boundary, while retaining the existing unassessed last
parcel. Ensure both overlay pieces for `00103` carry `Field::Null` so the

Second round answered inline, with no new commit; the curl timeout goes in with the next nightly.yml change. On CodeRabbit's follow-up, making the straddling parcel 00103 the unassessed one so that a null value is checked through the overlay is a good idea. I'll make it in the next change to workflows.rs rather than restart this review.

Adds tests that run everyday jobs from start to finish the way a user runs them: by command id, as the ribbon, CLI, Python and the AI Assistant do. #[ignore]d on PRs, uses the Census Bureau's TIGER/Line tracts and its Gazetteer, which are public domain. It cuts Tennessee to Shelby County and joins the Gazetteer's published land and water areas. Every one of the 249 tracts' geodesic area must match its published area to within 1e-5 (plus a square metre of rounding); the two agree to 4e-6, measured separately with GeographicLib. It then saves, reopens and exports to GeoPackage and checks the same.nightly.ymlgets a Linux job that downloads the two files (15.6 MB), checks each against a pinned SHA-256 and caches them.assets.rustgis.applater means changing their URLs in the list.docs/contributing.md› Test data now describes the file and gives the steps to run the real-data case locally.Found on the way: the Gazetteer reads
