`StreamController::request_stop` is synchronous, so a caller can be on a thread with no Tokio runtime. The stop to a remote sender is an active message, and it was spawned on `Handle::try_current()`. With no current runtime, the spawn did not happen and the stop was dropped. The anchor had already recorded the stop, so a second call returned early, and the remote sender never stopped. The stop now goes out on the messenger's stored runtime. The test calls `request_stop` from a plain thread, over the mux and without it. Before the fix, the remote sender's stop token did not fire within 5 s. Signed-off-by: Ryan Olson <rolson@nvidia.com>

A same-worker attach registers its sender in the local sender registry, where `StreamController::cancel` finds it. `request_stop` sent the stop as an active message to the sender's worker even when that worker was the local one. The send's result is ignored, and the stop did not arrive: the sender's stop token did not fire within 5 s. `request_sender_stop` now takes the local worker and cancels a local sender's stop token directly. Signed-off-by: Ryan Olson <rolson@nvidia.com>
The record carries a 9-byte body, a session id and an action: 0 is a graceful stop and 1 is a cancel. The doc said it had no body. Signed-off-by: Ryan Olson <rolson@nvidia.com>

StreamController::request_stoppasses the snapshottedinner.messenger, but remote attachment uses the separately populatedmessenger_lock. Wheninner.messengerisNone,request_sender_stopchecks the receiver's registry. The remote sender'sstop_tokenis in the remote registry, so the producer does not receive the graceful-stop signal. #90 merged into main as one squashed commit. This merges its last branch head, 7c225bd, which has the same tree as main. Conflicts: #90 added the same `wait_for_handler` fast path as this branch. Kept #90's code and test (`has_cached_handler`), removed this branch's `handler_known` and its test, and kept the longer doc comments. The book now names #90's test. #90 renamed the mux key from messenger-mux-v1 to messenger-mux-v2. Every conflict keeps this branch's text for the mux-on-by-default change, with the key renamed, plus what main added in the same place: #96's credit-window note and `initial_credit` parameter, and #90's paragraph on ticket-sender stop and cancel. Two v1 references outside the conflicts are renamed as well. Signed-off-by: Ryan Olson <rolson@nvidia.com>
Summary
Add
StreamController::request_stop()and a producerstop_token(). Stop leaves buffered output and finalization usable. Cancel triggers both producer tokens and takes precedence. Attach and prebound tickets retain early lifecycle requests, including cancellation of idle ticket producers. Mux protocol v2 carries stop and cancel with the full routing session learned from the existing slot open. It rejects stale signals after slot generation reuse. A per-peer transport health check closes idle producer slots after peer loss.Bound UCX queued and outstanding sends per peer. Completion releases send permits; cancellation and peer retirement release pending work. The progress thread remains available for control and endpoint cleanup. No new transport traits or raw-frame API are introduced.
Use the existing per-instance handler cache in
wait_for_handler. Repeated checks of a known handler return without a_helloround trip or copying the handler list. Unknown peers still exchange addresses, missing handlers still refresh, and a new peer instance gets a fresh handshake.Validation
After the handler-cache fix, on Tyche Grace: 978 unit tests passed (one existing ignored), six cancellation tests passed, and 30 mux integration tests passed with UCX enabled,
UCX_TLS=tcp, and four test threads. The new regression test fails without the cache guard: four lookups cause four handshakes instead of one. With the guard it also verifies a missing-handler refresh, initial reverse peer registration, and a fresh handshake after a peer restart at the same address. During the earlier lifecycle validation, four idle-endpoint tests timed out under the initial unrestricted concurrent run; all 40 selected UCX tests passed serially, then the full selected suite passed at four threads. The UCX fault-injection unit tests require
UCX_TLS=tcpexactly. During this follow-up, an initial run forced onto RDMA aborted inside UCX; enablingtcp, selfalso made the invalid-key test fail because the GET succeeded. The final run used the required TCP-only setting and passed. Dynamo hardware validation usesrc_mlx5,ud_mlx5,selfseparately.Dynamo's adapter passed its shared lifecycle suite with the final Velo pin on TCP and hardware RDMA (
rc_mlx5/mlx5_0:1, TCP disabled). It checks stop and drain, typed errors, finalization versus producer failure, blocked stream isolation, cancellation during sends, retained service ownership, and idle producer wakeup after peer shutdown. The default-feature TCP suite also passed with the new pin. The campaign UCX-enabled release build passed before this handler-cache fix.The final C8192 RDMA preflight exported 709,099 completed records with no errors or drain cancellations. All 2,048 KV sources stayed active on both frontends, all 14 processes used verified RDMA lanes, and live slots drained to zero. The largest worker pool reached 601 live slots without admission backpressure. This did not reproduce the previously documented concentration of 5,760 streams on one peer; the bounded-admission unit test passed separately, but this preflight does not establish that all historical saturation cases are resolved.
The completed four-way comparison retains all 16 measured runs with 2,048 speedup-10 mock workers: 9,854,326 completed exported records, including five empty-content errors. All modes used the same frozen UCX-enabled binary. Velo TCP improved throughput and CPU/request against Dynamo TCP; QUIC had the best throughput, CPU/request, and packet cost. Velo RDMA showed no clear throughput gain over Velo TCP. The report includes physical packet counts, latency tradeoffs, client and fabric limits, and source/build provenance. These are directional results, and Dynamo defaults are unchanged.
The September 23 performance results precede the handler-cache fix and remain the baseline for that implementation. A matched performance rerun is needed to measure this fix; no new performance result is claimed.
