Summary

aimux mcp serve becomes a session search and resume server for Claude Code, built on the search index from #58/#59. The 11 remote-agent tools move behind --agents, and an agents startup failure no longer takes the server down. It replaces the separate session-search-mcp server: on a 29-query eval, hybrid MRR is 0.79 vs 0.48.

Changes

  • New internal/sessionmcp with five tools: search_sessions, get_session, list_sessions, continue_session, create_virtual_session. It has no k8s or Redis dependencies (pinned by a test).
  • get_session/continue_session accept a full UUID or a unique prefix. An ambiguous prefix returns the candidates instead of guessing. continue_session includes the cd <dir> && claude --resume <id> line.
  • Every call refreshes the index first, so sessions started after the last refresh are found and no ingest hook is needed. Calls are serialized, so concurrent tool calls don't lock SQLite.
  • Output is capped at 100k characters, keeping the newest exchanges; before_seq pages back. Automated sessions are hidden unless include_automated, but always open by explicit ID.
  • search.Index.Update also scans ~/.aimux/archive, so transcripts outlive Claude Code's cleanupPeriodDays. The live file wins over an archived copy, and a session is pruned only when its recorded file is gone.
  • --agents: the openshell executor gets no stdin and writes to stderr, so sandbox output can't corrupt the JSON-RPC stream. aimux mcp register writes mcp serve --agents.
  • scripts/k8s-agents-mcp-start.sh fails loudly on an expired login or missing secret.

Testing

  • go build ./... compiles
  • go vet ./... passes
  • go test ./... -timeout 30s passes
  • New/changed code has tests
  • If provider change: verified across all affected providers (n/a, Claude Code transcripts only)
  • End-to-end over stdio: stdout carries only JSON-RPC with and without --agents; without OPENAI_API_KEY the keyword-only note goes to stderr.
  • Running as my Claude Code session search since 2026-10-10.

Notes

  • Breaking: aimux mcp serve without flags no longer serves the agent tools. Use --agents.
  • Follow-ups: weighted fusion or a reranker (the eval's answer key predates the archive), and moving mcp register off ~/.claude/settings.json.

… fails loudly

The start script now uses pipefail and exits with a clear error when the
cluster secrets can't be read or the Redis port-forward never comes up,
instead of launching a server that shows Connected but fails every call.

… sessions

- openshell executor gets no stdin and writes to stderr, so sandbox output
  cannot corrupt the JSON-RPC stream
- create_virtual_session drops the oldest sections when one exchange each
still exceeds 100k, and takes at most 20 IDs
- get_session gains before_seq; capped output says how to page back
- mcp register writes 'mcp serve --agents' for the agents entry

Update scans ~/.aimux/archive after ~/.claude/projects; the live file wins,
a moved file is re-pointed, and a session is pruned only when its recorded
file is gone, so an Update that skips the archive cannot drop it.

Walkthrough

The search service now indexes archived sessions and supports session lookup by ID or prefix. A new session MCP server exposes five tools. mcp serve provides those tools by default and adds remote-agent tools when started with --agents.

Changes

Session search and MCP

Layer / File(s) Summary
Archive-aware search and session retrieval
internal/search/*, cmd/aimux/cmd/sessions_search.go
The index scans project and archive directories, gives project copies precedence, and retains entries from directories not scanned. The service adds session and recent-session reads, ID resolution, and serialized access.
Session MCP tools and output formatting
internal/sessionmcp/*
Five tools handle search, retrieval, listing, continuation, and virtual sessions. Output formatters apply exchange and response limits, paging guidance, and session labels.
MCP serving and optional agent tools
cmd/aimux/cmd/mcp.go, cmd/aimux/cmd/mcp*_test.go, internal/mcpserver/server.go, scripts/k8s-agents-mcp-start.sh, docs/superpowers/plans/2026-10-10-sessions-mcp.md
mcp serve registers session tools unconditionally and adds remote-agent tools with --agents. Agent setup failures are reported without stopping session serving. Claude Code registration enables agents; the executor routes child output to stderr. The Kubernetes startup script checks secret retrieval and Redis connectivity.

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 9f1f3

A pasted resume command can behave incorrectly for some directory names, and registration can expose a Redis credential through an existing readable settings file. Fix both before merging unless those risks are explicitly accepted.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 9f1f3

The new session tools can access history across the local user’s projects and archives. Their resume instructions interpolate directory metadata into a shell command without quoting, creating a conditional command-execution risk if those instructions are run. Local stdio access and explicit remote-agent enablement limit exposure, but some security and deployment questions remain unresolved.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · security · inferred: The newly exposed continue_session tool inserts transcript CWD metadata and the resolved session ID directly into a native-resume shell command. CWD is accepted from JSONL without validation or shell quoting. If an attacker can influence that metadata or a session’s directory name, shell metacharacters can become commands when the returned instruction is executed. This is a conditional downstream execution path, not execution inside the MCP server, and no remote metadata-write capability or automatic client execution was established.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The session tools’ intended readable scope is the serving OS user’s indexed live and archived history across projects, not only the current project. Tool inputs do not select arbitrary transcript paths. If the emitted resume command is executed, its effective authority is that of the executing user or client; remote-agent enablement separately retains configured backend authority.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — The supported conditional path is transcript CWD metadata to the local index, then Detail retrieval, continue_session formatting, and eventual shell interpretation outside the server. Markdown backticks do not shell-quote the operands. The strongest counterevidence is that the handler returns text only, access is through local stdio, and attacker control of metadata plus downstream execution has not been demonstrated. The canonical candidates remain deferred rather than verified findings.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Session selection uses parameter-bound SQL, escapes prefix wildcards, and rejects ambiguity. Project filters narrow discovery results but are not caller identity checks. The inspected handlers contain no project- or tenant-specific authorization; containment relies on the local process and OS-user boundary, whose deployment enforcement was not supplied.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Returned agent-construction errors omit agent-tool registration while leaving session tools available. The Kubernetes wrapper now detects secret-read pipeline failures, rejects an empty Redis password, and checks local port readiness. These changes improve failure containment without establishing complete cleanup or bounded startup across all backend failure states.
  • inferred — Archive transitions are not a filesystem snapshot: a live file disappearing after discovery can mask an available archive until the next refresh, leaving previously indexed content visible temporarily. Pruning also treats any recorded-path stat failure as disappearance when the ID was not scanned. Normal fallback and deletion tests cover orderly transitions, not these fault states; no independently exploitable security impact was established.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Render native-resume instructions with shell-safe operands and validate the expected session-ID format, or return structured arguments instead of executable-looking interpolated text. Exercise directory names containing whitespace, quotes, and shell metacharacters.
  • proposed — Make cross-project history access and refresh-time provider transmission explicit configuration choices. An independently enforced project scope and a local-only embedding switch would let deployments restrict exposure without relying on discovery filters or removal of a generally available API credential.

…sume directory

serve --agents reads the Redis URL from ~/.aimux/config.yaml, so writing it
(password included) into the registered entry's env only leaked it.
continue_session's resume line now quotes directories with spaces or quotes
and drops the cd when the directory is unknown.

Addresses CodeRabbit review on #61.
