Reason for This PR

closes: #201

rustc 1.99.0 on x86_64 does not clear bits 1-7 of a bool that an extern "C" function returns (rust-lang/rust#163911, fix in rust-lang/rust#163917). The C shims store that byte as the zval type, so Exchange::isCancelled() and isFinalized() crash every x86_64 release build of 0.9.0. Debug builds mask the byte, so CI did not see it.

Description of Changes

  • Pin Rust 1.98.1 in rust-toolchain.toml, the Dockerfile rust image and every dtolnay/rust-toolchain use until a stable release has the fix. Dependabot keeps the rust image below 1.99.
  • Import NumBuffer from core::fmt, which Rust 1.98 has.
  • Add an e2e test with the shape of the issue: the unit passes from receive() into a method that branches on the state verbs.
  • Run the e2e suite against the release build on the x86_64 Linux legs. This is the profile that the images, tarballs and packages ship.
  • Align the CI pins: one rust-cache release, install-action with cargo-llvm-cov 0.9.1, and the Codecov CLI v11.3.1.
  • Build the Linux binaries on Rocky Linux 9.8, the maintained rockylinux/rockylinux image.
  • Build the macOS binaries on macos-latest, the runner that CI tests. The minimum macOS follows the runner, because the tarball bundles its Homebrew libraries.
  • Update the Docker PHP bases to 8.5.11 and 8.4.26, the patches that CI and the tarballs already use.
  • Update the fuzz lockfile and the tool versions in CONTRIBUTING.md.
  • Update hyper to 1.12.0. It removes content-length when transfer-encoding is sent, and Connection: close wins over keep-alive.

  • All added/changed functionality is tested.

The fixture passes the unit from receive() into a method that branches on isCancelled() and isFinalized(). The test fails on an x86_64 release build made with rustc 1.99.0.

rustc 1.99.0 on x86_64 does not clear bits 1-7 of a bool that an extern "C" function returns (rust-lang/rust#163911). The C shims store that byte as the zval type, so isCancelled() and isFinalized() crash the release builds.

rust-toolchain.toml, the Dockerfile rust image and the dtolnay/rust-toolchain refs use 1.98.1 until a stable release has the fix. Dependabot keeps the rust image below 1.99. NumBuffer comes from core::fmt, which Rust 1.98 has.

The images, tarballs and packages ship the release profile, and only optimized x86_64 code shows the rustc 1.99.0 miscompile. The arm64 and macOS legs keep the debug build.

Every rust-cache use is v2.9.2, install-action is v2.87.26 with cargo-llvm-cov 0.9.1, and the Codecov CLI is v11.3.1. The x86_64 jobs run on ubuntu-24.04, the same release as the ubuntu-24.04-arm legs.

The Docker images now carry the PHP patch that CI and the release tarballs use. Dependabot does not update these digests, so a comment names the pins that change together.

The rockylinux:9 library image stays at Rocky Linux 9.3, while dnf installs from the 9.8 repositories. rockylinux/rockylinux:9 is the maintained image, and glibc stays 2.34. The rpm check uses the same image.

The Cargo.lock of the fuzz crate still listed the workspace crates at 0.8.1.

Signed-off-by: Valery Piashchynski <piashchynski.valery@gmail.com>
CONTRIBUTING.md installs cargo-fuzz 0.13.2 and cargo-llvm-cov 0.9.1, as the workflows do. The dnf line is for Fedora only, because RHEL 9 and 10 install PHP older than 8.4.

The ubuntu-24.04 target is not required by the inspected repository evidence. Commit 11e0883e0ffd803c7934364bd7df7778b1247217 explicitly selects ubuntu-latest for x86_64 jobs and explains that arm64 jobs remain on ubuntu-24.04-arm. The base-to-head workflow diff does not establish a conflicting runner requirement.

📝 Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Chores
    • Updated build and test environments to use consistent, pinned tool versions and refreshed container images.
    • Adjusted macOS build settings to follow the runner’s detected version and updated Linux build environments.
    • Expanded end-to-end coverage for dispatcher exchange state reporting.

Walkthrough

The changes pin the Rust toolchain and selected build tools, update CI runners and container images, and add an end-to-end test for exchange state in dispatcher mode.

The project and selected workflow steps pin Rust to 1.98.1. Docker and contributor instructions reference pinned tool versions, Dependabot ignores Rust versions at or above 1.99, and three NumBuffer imports now use core::fmt.
CI runners and container images
.github/workflows/build-binaries.yml, .github/workflows/docker.yml, Dockerfile, .github/workflows/coverage.yml
Linux build and RPM validation use the updated Rocky Linux image digest. The macOS runner and deployment target change. PHP base-image digests and the Codecov CLI version are updated.
Dispatcher exchange-state regression test
crates/tests/fixtures/dispatcher/method-exchange-worker.php, crates/tests/tests/e2e/dispatcher_loop.rs, .github/workflows/ci.yml
The fixture serves live exchanges and reports their cancelled and finalized state. The end-to-end test expects a 200 response with both values false. Linux x86-64 uses a release binary for this test path.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

The Rust 1.98.1 pin and the x86_64 Linux release-profile end-to-end test address the crash in #201. The test checks both state verbs on an exchange received and passed into a method. However, #201 also identifies silent worker respawns after signal exits and asks for exit-signal logging. crates/master/src/process.rs classifies unexpected signals as crashes, but it does not log the signal. crates/master/src/pool.rs schedules a respawn without logging the exit.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The Rust toolchain pin, compatibility imports, and release-profile test support the crash objective in #201. The changes to the macOS runner and deployment target, Linux build image, Docker PHP image digests, coverage and Codecov tooling, fuzz lockfile, and contributor tool versions address general build and tooling maintenance. They do not implement or validate the reported dispatcher crash.

macos-14 loses support on 2026-11-02 (actions/runner-images#13518), and CI already tests on macos-latest. The deployment target follows the major macOS version of the runner, because the tarball bundles its Homebrew libraries and a libphp built there.

The x86_64 jobs follow the newest Ubuntu image, as the macOS jobs follow macos-latest. GitHub has no latest label for arm64, so those legs stay on ubuntu-24.04-arm.

hyper 1.12.0 removes content-length when transfer-encoding is sent, and a Connection close token wins over keep-alive (https://github.com/hyperium/hyper/blob/v1.12.0/CHANGELOG.md). want 0.3.2 comes with it. The fuzz lockfile uses the same hyper version.
