Pull Request

Issue

Closes #10837
Closes #10838

Builds on #10838.

On MongoDB, updateSchemaWithIndexes() copies every index into _SCHEMA on server start, including the internal indexes that performInitialization creates. Schema migration then deletes every index of a class in schema.definitions that is neither in the local schema nor in isProtectedIndex, unless keepUnknownIndexes is set. The _User indexes _email_verify_token, _perishable_token (#9893) and _auth_data_<provider>_id (#10149) were never added to isProtectedIndex. Server start re-creates them, but the migration drops them again whenever its cached schema lists them, so they can be missing while the server runs. When several instances start at the same time, dropping an index that another instance already dropped fails with IndexNotFound, and in production the server can exit after the migration retries fail.

Approach

  • Protect the _User indexes _email_verify_token, _perishable_token and _auth_data_<provider>_id, and the _Idempotency index ttl. _Idempotency is a volatile class that is not stored in _SCHEMA, so its entries are defensive.
  • Treat MongoDB IndexNotFound (code 27) as success when dropping an index, and use DROP INDEX IF EXISTS on Postgres, so dropping an index that another instance already dropped succeeds.
  • Add a spec that starts the server on an empty database and expects every index it creates to be protected, so a new internal index fails CI instead of being dropped by schema migration.

Postgres does not copy indexes into _SCHEMA on server start, so its internal indexes were not affected.

Changes on top of #10838

  • Replace the _Idempotency migration spec, which wrote _SCHEMA directly to reach a state the server never creates, with the spec above that checks every index created on server start.
  • Match _auth_data_<provider>_id only with the provider name characters used elsewhere ([a-zA-Z0-9_]).
  • Check that the _Idempotency indexes reqId_1 and ttl are created on server start; the removed spec covered ttl.
  • Close the adapters that the new MongoDB adapter specs open, and check that the index exists before the Postgres spec drops it.
  • Shorten the comment in dropIndex.

Tasks

  • Add tests

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes

    • Removing an index that is already absent no longer causes an error in MongoDB or PostgreSQL.
    • Schema updates now preserve protected system indexes while removing unprotected indexes not defined in the local schema.
    • Improved handling of protected indexes for user and idempotency data.
  • Tests

    • Added coverage for repeated index removal, index protection, and startup collection indexes.

Replaces the _Idempotency migration spec, which wrote _SCHEMA directly to reach a state the server never creates.
…dex specs

- Check the indexes of every class created on server start, not only _User, _Role and _Idempotency.
- Match _auth_data_<provider>_id with the provider name characters used elsewhere.
- Close the adapters the new Mongo specs open, check that the _Idempotency indexes are created, and check that the Postgres index exists before it is dropped.

🚀 Thanks for opening this pull request! We appreciate your effort in improving the project. Please let us know once your pull request is ready for review.

Tip

  • Keep pull requests small. Large PRs will be rejected. Break complex features into smaller, incremental PRs.
  • Use Test Driven Development. Write failing tests before implementing functionality. Ensure tests pass.
  • Group code into logical blocks. Add a short comment before each block to explain its purpose.
  • We offer conceptual guidance. Coding is up to you. PRs must be merge-ready for human review.
  • Our review focuses on concept, not quality. PRs with code issues will be rejected. Use an AI agent.
  • Human review time is precious. Avoid review ping-pong. Inspect and test your AI-generated code.

Note

Please respond to review comments from AI agents just like you would to comments from a human reviewer. Let the reviewer resolve their own comments, unless they have reviewed and accepted your commit, or agreed with your explanation for why the feedback was incorrect.

Caution

Pull requests must be written using an AI agent with human supervision. Pull requests written entirely by a human will likely be rejected, because of lower code quality, higher review effort and the higher risk of introducing bugs. Please note that AI review comments on this pull request alone do not satisfy this requirement. Our CI and AI review are safeguards, not development tools. If many issues are flagged, rethink your development approach. Invest more effort in planning and design rather than using review cycles to fix low-quality code.

Walkthrough

The changes expand protected-index classification for internal _User and _Idempotency indexes. MongoDB and PostgreSQL index-drop operations now tolerate an index that is already absent, with tests covering classification, schema reconciliation, and repeated or concurrent drops.

Changes: Schema index cleanup

Layer / File(s) Summary
Protected index classification and schema reconciliation
src/SchemaMigrations/DefinedSchemas.js, spec/DefinedSchemas.spec.js, spec/MongoStorageAdapter.spec.js
The protected index list now includes _User email-verification and perishable-token indexes, _User auth-provider indexes matching the specified pattern, and _Idempotency.ttl. Tests check classification, schema reconciliation, and default _Idempotency indexes.
MongoDB missing-index handling
src/Adapters/Storage/Mongo/MongoStorageAdapter.js, spec/MongoStorageAdapter.spec.js
dropIndex ignores error code 27 and passes other errors to handleError. Tests cover concurrent deletion and rejection of other errors.
PostgreSQL missing-index handling
src/Adapters/Storage/Postgres/PostgresStorageAdapter.js, spec/PostgresStorageAdapter.spec.js
dropIndexes uses DROP INDEX IF EXISTS. A regression test drops the same index twice and confirms it remains absent.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title begins with the required prefix "fix:" and the first letter after the prefix is capitalized ("Schema"). It clearly describes the main change: the schema migration no longer deletes internal indexes that startup creates, which matches the protected-index and IndexNotFound changes in the changeset.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Issue #10837 requires startup-created internal indexes to remain protected and concurrent index drops to succeed. DefinedSchemas.isProtectedIndex now protects _User _email_verify_token, _perishable_token, _auth_data_<provider>_id, and _Idempotency.ttl. MongoDB code 27 is treated as success, and PostgreSQL uses DROP INDEX IF EXISTS. Added specs verify protected indexes, removal of an unprotected index, and repeated drops.

Full details: Docstring Coverage

Explanation

No eligible functions found in the changed files. Skipping docstring coverage check. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff with cyclomatic complexity of at least 2. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 0 functions across 6 files.

Full details: Security Check

Explanation

No security vulnerability is introduced. The changed MongoDB code ignores only missing-index error code 27 and sends all other errors to handleError. The PostgreSQL change uses DROP INDEX IF EXISTS for idempotent cleanup. The _User protection regex matches only the intended _auth_data_<provider>_id naming form, and existing provider validation uses the same character constraints. The patch does not change authentication, authorization, data exposure, or input validation paths.

Full details: Engage In Review Feedback

Explanation

PASS. No review feedback comments were returned, and the current review produced zero actionable findings. Therefore, there was no feedback that the user could have ignored or resolved without engagement.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The PR description follows the repository template. It includes the Pull Request header, an Issue section that closes #10837 and #10838, an Approach section, and a Tasks section with the 'Add tests' item checked. It explains the problem, the fix for each adapter, and the spec added. The remaining template tasks (documentation, security check, and Parse JS SDK error codes) are not checked or addressed. The description does not state that documentation was reviewed as not needed, and it does not mention the security check. These are minor gaps, so the description is mostly complete.

Add a caller-path test for _Idempotency.ttl during reconciliation.

The _Idempotency.ttl index is protected only by isProtectedIndex. No test runs DefinedSchemas.execute() for _Idempotency with no declared indexes and checks that ttl remains. A regression in the reconciliation path can remove ttl while the current tests still pass.

The fixture below reads the index list from the adapter. It does not depend on Parse.Schema exposing ttl, which is not verified here.
