fix(ui): a plugin command shows it has started, and clicks made while it runs are dropped (#1319) - #1426
Part of #1319. In the desktop app, a plugin command that waits for a server (service.add, for example) holds the window with no sign that it has started, so users click again and the command runs again. This PR gives the window that sign and stops those clicks from running it again.
The window still doesn't respond during the read. Leaving service.add to the frame loop needs the rerun from #1341, so it is left for a second PR once that lands, and #1319 stays open until then.
pluginstart (crates/ui-egui/src/pluginstart.rs): run_by_user no longer runs a plugin command at once. It queues the command, and logic runs it on the third frame: asked, shown, run. Until then the status bar says Running BrasilData: Solos… and the cursor is the busy one, and both stay on screen while the thread waits.
The same command asked twice: a command with the same parameters that is already queued isn't queued again. A different one runs after it, in turn, with its own frame showing it.
A button held: a command doesn't start while a pointer button is down, or in the frame the button comes up. Otherwise the run would swallow the release and egui would keep the button down until the next click. A second click begun during the wait finds the command still waiting, so it runs once.
Another project: a project replacing this one during the wait drops the commands waiting in it, with a notice, as they name its layers. This is checked against Session::opened, so it holds however the project was replaced.
Clicks made during a long run: after a run of 150 ms or more, drop_stale_clicks drops the pointer button events of the next frame, press and release alike. The window system holds those clicks until the command ends, so they were made for a window that wasn't answering. The app gets them through raw_input_hook, now on every desktop platform.
Panels: a panel's widgets now go through run_by_user too, so their commands get the same treatment.
Scripts, tasks, the AI Assistant, attached agents and rustgis-cli don't go through run_by_user, so their commands still run at once and return their answer.
Limits
The status bar shows a static frame while the thread waits: no animation, and Windows may mark the window as not responding on a long read.
Only pointer buttons are dropped. Keys pressed during a long run, including shortcuts, still act afterwards.
Pointer events carry no time, so a click made just after a long command returned, before the next frame reads its input, is dropped with the held ones. That gap is about a frame.
A command that isn't a plugin's, asked for during the wait of about two frames, runs first. Only a project replacement drops what is waiting.
A command asked for with a button held waits, showing "Running…", until the button is let go or the window loses focus (egui clears no button then). A focused window that never hears the release would wait until the next click. A run begun with a button down drops no clicks, so a release that does come after it still reaches egui; clicks made during that run go through.
An undo that restores an earlier project (one a task replaced), within the wait of about two frames, doesn't drop what is waiting: Session::opened doesn't change on undo, so the command runs in the restored project.
Dropped clicks are not reported with a notice: nothing was asked of the app that it could say it left undone, and a notice for every impatient click would be noise. Say if you want one under the "Never silent" rule.
In the browser nothing blocks here, so the hook isn't installed. Commands there still get the short status text.
Testing
New in pluginstart: a command isn't run before a frame has shown it, and runs once when asked twice; two commands run in turn while run stays immediate; stale clicks are dropped once, with pointer moves kept and later clicks untouched; a command waits for a held button, whose release then isn't lost, and doesn't wait once the window has lost focus, where the release, if it comes, still reaches egui; egui gives a frame after the one that ran the command, with none waiting; a new project drops the commands waiting, with one notice, and says nothing when none wait.
tests/smoke.rs: the panel and ribbon tests now step 3 frames after a click, since the command runs on the third. New: a second click on a ribbon button across the start runs the command once.
Before the review fixes, full cargo xtask ci on Windows on main at f822ef0e: 3,742 tests pass.
On the review fixes: cargo test -p rustgis-ui-egui --lib (556 pass), --test smoke (97 pass), after merging main, cargo clippy -p rustgis-ui-egui --all-targets -- -D warnings.
cargo check -p rustgis-web --target wasm32-unknown-unknown, before the review fixes.
Not tested in a real window. The hook is unit-tested with built events, but clicking a running BrasilData command in the desktop app hasn't been tried. That one-frame drop relies on the window system handing over the held clicks before the next frame's input is read, so it is the part to try by hand. A click split across two frames can't fire, because its press was dropped.
… it runs are dropped (opengeos#1319)
A plugin command that waits for a server holds the window with no sign it
has started, and clicks made meanwhile run it again. Run from the interface,
it now starts on the third frame, with "Running …" in the status bar and a
busy cursor on screen, and the clicks held during a long run are dropped.
The window still waits: leaving service.add to the frame loop needs opengeos#1341.

Walkthrough
User-requested plugin commands now use a UI queue before execution. The UI shows running status and a wait cursor while a command is pending. After qualifying long runs, the application removes pointer-button events from one input batch. Tests and plugin documentation cover these changes.

Summary
Queue and dispatch plugin commands crates/ui-egui/src/pluginstart.rs, crates/ui-egui/src/lib.rs, crates/ui-egui/src/pluginpanel.rs, crates/ui-egui/tests/smoke.rs
User-requested plugin commands are queued and deduplicated by command ID, parameters, and project ID. The queue runs commands after two drawn frames when pointer-release conditions allow. Direct calls to run remain immediate, and the panel helper now uses run_by_user. Tests cover queue behavior and plugin interactions.
Startup feedback and stale-click handling crates/ui-egui/src/pluginstart.rs, crates/ui-egui/src/chrome.rs, apps/rustgis/src/main.rs, crates/ui-egui/tests/smoke.rs, docs/plugins.md
The status bar displays the running command label, and the UI sets a wait cursor while a command is pending. After a qualifying run, the input hooks remove pointer-button events from the next input batch once. Tests and documentation cover the updated behavior.

Explanation
The description follows the repository template sections (Summary, Testing, UI evidence, Related issue). The Summary explains the problem, the change, and its limits in detail. The Testing section lists the test runs and the parts that were not tested in a real window. The UI evidence section is missing. The template says this section is required when visible UI changes, and the PR changes the status bar, the cursor, and the click handling, so the template's 'No visible UI change.' line is not accurate. The Related issue section is also not filled in, although the description names #1319 in its opening line and as 'Part of #1319'. The description is mostly complete, so the check passes, but the author should fill in the UI evidence section with before and after screenshots of the status bar, or state why none apply, and should replace the 'Part of' text in the Related issue section.

I found no crash paths, no security issues, and no performance problems. The main concerns are three low-to-moderate-confidence edge cases, posted inline. I also checked the rest of the design, and most of it holds up. Prior review threads: none existed, so no concerns were left alone.
Bugs
Possible stuck pointer button after a dropped release (~40%). drop_stale_clicks drops every PointerButton event in the frame after a long run. A press delivered before the run whose release is dropped leaves egui thinking the button is still down. Posted inline at crates/ui-egui/src/pluginstart.rs:80.
Command order can invert within the two-frame wait (~25%). A non-plugin command asked during the wait (such as a project replacement) runs before the queued plugin command. Posted inline at crates/ui-egui/src/lib.rs:1802.
Backstage hides the status bar (~20%, not posted). The "Running …" frame is only drawn when the status bar is drawn, so a command asked from backstage (via Command Search) runs without it being shown.

format! in user-visible text (~55%). The status text uses format!("{}: {}", …), and the rule asks for i18n::fmt. Posted inline with a suggestion at crates/ui-egui/src/pluginstart.rs:71.
Dropped clicks and "Never silent": the rule is about data, so I don't read it as requiring a notice for dropped clicks. The PR asks the maintainers to decide, so that call is theirs.
Checked and fine
run_next discards run's result with let _ =, but run notifies its own errors (lib.rs:1845-1851), so nothing is silently lost.
Frame counting: a queued command runs on the third frame, with the status shown on the second. The asserted ordering in the tests matches the code.
pluginstart.rs avoids std::time (it uses web_time), and the new hook sits in apps/rustgis, so the browser build is unaffected.
The unwraps are in test code only.
Lines are under the 140-column rustfmt limit.
The real-window click behaviour is untested, as the PR says. It is the riskiest part, and the PR already flags it.

Add a test that exercises the stale-click flag through a slow command.
The test at pluginstart.rs:159-165 sets clicks_stale directly. No test runs a command that lasts STALE_AFTER (150 ms). The assignment in run_next at pluginstart.rs:49 therefore has no test coverage. Removing it would leave the current tests passing. The test name clicks_made_during_a_long_run_are_dropped_once also suggests coverage that the test body does not provide.
Add a test that:
runs a command that lasts longer than STALE_AFTER through run_next, and
asserts that drop_stale_clicks removes the pointer press from the next input.
If run_next can take its elapsed-time source from a seam, use that seam instead of a real sleep. The current behavior is correct. This change adds regression coverage only.

Unverified finding
We couldn't verify this from the code. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.
drop_stale_clicks consumes the stale flag on its first call, including when that input batch contains no pointer events. Click events delivered in a later batch would therefore escape the filter.
An impatient click made while the window was blocked could execute another command.
This can occur when: A long command finishes; the next frame has no pointer-button events, and buffered presses and releases arrive in a subsequent frame.

…drops those waiting (opengeos#1319)
A command run while a pointer button was down lost that button's release: it came in the frame
whose clicks are dropped, and egui kept the button down until the next click. `run_next` now waits
until no button is down, and for one frame after a release, since that release's click reaches
`ask` in the frame's drawing and finds the command still waiting. A second click across the start
no longer runs the command twice.
A project replaced during the wait no longer leaves its commands to act on a namesake in the new
one: each waiting command remembers `Session::opened`, and the ones from an old project are dropped
with a notice, however the project was replaced.
The command title goes through `i18n::fmt`, and `run_next` no longer sits between the url requests
comment and its loop. The doc comment states the limit of `drop_stale_clicks`: events carry no time.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
No confirmed bugs. One low-confidence concern, posted inline (crates/ui-egui/src/pluginstart.rs:69, ~25%): run_next waits while pointer.any_down() is true, with no bound. If egui never receives the release, the queued command never runs, the cursor stays Wait, and the status bar stays on "Running…" with no notice. I could not confirm from the repo whether egui clears the held state on focus loss.
Security
None found. The change adds no parsing of external input. Parameters pass through to run unchanged.
Performance
None significant. Per-frame work is a queue scan, and repaints are requested only while a command waits.
Quality (nits, grouped)
apps/rustgis/src/main.rs: there are now two raw_input_hook bodies that both call drop_stale_clicks. A single hook that calls it first would be simpler.
pluginstart::ask shares its name with saveprompt::ask and the agent's ask. Something more specific would read better.
frame_drawn(self, &ctx) passes &&Context. Harmless, but ctx could be passed directly.
Two identical clicks within about two frames of each other collapse into one run. This is the intended behaviour, and the PR says so.
AGENTS.md
Visible UI change without screenshots (~85%): the status-bar "Running…" label and the busy cursor change what the user sees, but the PR body has no before or after images. AGENTS.md asks for these on visible changes, and the Testing section says the hook was not tried in a real window.
Checked and not violations: no unwrap, expect or panic in non-test code; web_time::Instant is used, and the hook is installed only on desktop, so wasm is unaffected; user-visible strings use i18n::fmt; the dropped-click case is not data, so "Never silent" does not require a notice (the author chose not to add one).
Earlier review threads
Five earlier concerns were left alone: the stuck button after a dropped release, command order during the wait, the project-replacement queue, the lost first click after a slow command, and format! in status text. Four of them are resolved in code. The first-click thread was answered by the author with reasoning I found no contrary evidence for.
Verification limits
Findings come from reading the diff and source. I did not build or run the tests, since this review has no shell.

Add a test for the desktop raw_input_hook wiring.
No test calls either raw_input_hook in apps/rustgis/src/main.rs. Each one calls self.0.drop_stale_clicks(raw_input). Removing that call leaves the suite passing. The filter body has unit tests in crates/ui-egui/src/pluginstart.rs, but those call drop_stale_clicks directly. The smoke harness does not run the eframe::App wrapper, and the second-click test does not set the stale flag or reach the filter.
A test in the apps/rustgis binary crate can call the hook on App. It should set the stale flag as a slow run does, buffer a pointer press and release, call raw_input_hook, and assert that those events are removed. Cover the variant that compiles on the test platform. If the flag is not visible from that module, add a narrow test helper that sets it. The test must still call the hook itself. A test that calls only drop_stale_clicks cannot detect removal of the hook call.

…as lost focus (opengeos#1319)
egui clears keys when the window loses focus but no pointer button, so a release that never came
held the command, its busy cursor and its status text until the next click.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
A click made after a slow plugin command can be dropped silently. The stale-click flag (clicks_stale) is cleared by whichever frame comes next, but nothing requests that frame after a single command, so the flag can outlive the held clicks and drop the next real click. Confidence ~60%. Inline comment posted at crates/ui-egui/src/pluginstart.rs:77, with a suggested request_repaint() fix. This is distinct from the earlier thread about a one-frame gap, which the author and reviewer already settled.
Performance
frame_drawn requests a repaint every frame while a command waits, including while a pointer button is held for a long drag. Requesting repaints only before the command is shown would avoid a vsync-rate redraw loop during the hold. Confidence ~30%.
Quality
Nothing else of note. I checked that run already notifies its own errors (lib.rs:1845-1851), so the let _ = app.run(...) in run_next drops nothing silently. The plugin helpers the new file calls exist with the signatures it uses.
AGENTS.md
The PR changes visible UI (the status-bar "Running …" text and the busy cursor) but the description has no screenshots. AGENTS.md asks for after-only screenshots of new UI. Confidence ~80%.
The dropped pointer clicks get no notice, and the PR asks whether the reviewer wants one under the "Never silent" rule. The rule is written about data, so this is arguable. Confidence ~30%.
Prior reviews: 7 threads were already on the PR, all resolved or withdrawn. I left 6 of them alone. The seventh is the stale-click boundary thread, which I raised again because the mechanism is different.
Change size
Compared with the base branch (merge base f822ef0 to PR head 4e24f9e).
Add a test for a slow command that starts after focus loss.
The focus-loss test runs a short command and never sends a button release or sets clicks_stale. The release-drop path is covered only in a_command_waits_for_a_held_button and clicks_made_during_a_long_run_are_dropped_once. Both set clicks_stale by hand, and neither involves focus loss.
A test that sets focus loss with a button down, runs a command long enough to set clicks_stale, and then sends a PointerButton release would cover the sequence the focus-loss change can produce. It would show whether the release reaches the app and what state egui reports afterward.

I read the full diff, the staged PR metadata and prior threads, and the surrounding code in lib.rs, chrome.rs and the engine's Session::run. Nothing else turned up that is worth raising.
Bugs
Unfocused window can leave egui's pointer button held (confidence ~35%, new since 4e24f9e). When the window has lost focus, run_next runs a plugin command even with a button down. If the run takes 150 ms or more, clicks_stale drops the next batch's PointerButton events, including the release. egui then keeps the button down until the next click. Posted inline at crates/ui-egui/src/pluginstart.rs:77 with a suggested fix and the tradeoff.
Security
None found.
Performance
Minor: frame_drawn requests a repaint on every frame while a command waits, including while a held button blocks it. Only a concern for long holds with a keyboard-triggered command. Not posted.
Quality
a_command_waits_for_a_held_button sets clicks_stale and calls drop_stale_clicks by hand rather than going through the real hook. Left for the release quality pass.
The comment at pluginstart.rs:229-231 says egui repaints twice for frame_drawn's request. That only holds while another command is queued. This is already raised in the line 77 thread, so I left it alone.
AGENTS.md
Interface text uses i18n::fmt, and the new notices are one per kind with a count. Errors from queued commands are notified by the engine's Session::run (lib.rs:1157-1162), so let _ = app.run(...) in run_next is not a silent loss.
Dropped clicks are not reported. The PR says so and asks the maintainers to decide. Clicks are not data, so I don't read this as an AGENTS violation.
Already raised
I left 8 earlier concerns alone, because their code is unchanged and no reply addresses them. These are the line 77 stale-flag thread (first click after a slow command dropped), the line 70 held-button thread (I posted only the unfocused variant as new), and the ordering, format!, wait-bound, and project-replacement threads. The line 70 thread, and the line 119 and 121 threads, are covered by the fixes in 7d1ebcb and 4e24f9e.

…pengeos#1319)
A window that has lost focus runs a waiting command with a button held. After a long run the
next batch's clicks were dropped, that release with them, and egui held the button until the
next click. A run begun with a button down now drops none.

Scope: the queueing, held-button, stale-click and project-replacement logic in pluginstart.rs, its call sites in lib.rs, main.rs, chrome.rs, and the pluginpanel/smoke.rs changes. I checked the run error path, the ui() early return, the lint setup for tests, and the callers of run_by_user. I did not run the tests; I have no shell here.
I left 11 earlier threads alone, because each was already raised and answered or resolved. The one still open (Layers-pane active layer during the wait) the author declined with a reason, and I have no new evidence against that reason.
Bugs
None found. run already notifies every error (lib.rs:1862-1868), so let _ = app.run(...) in run_next does not drop an error silently.
Security
None found. The change adds no new input parsing or privileged path.
Performance
Full-rate redraw during a held-button wait (~45%, inline comment on pluginstart.rs:92): frame_drawn requests a repaint every frame while a command waits, including while a button is held. The app then redraws for the whole hold. The release wakes egui by itself, so the repaint can wait for it.
Quality
"Shown" can be false when the status bar is not drawn (~25%): frame_drawn runs at the end of ui(), and the backstage branch (lib.rs:4198-4210) skips the status bar. A command asked from the ribbon and followed by opening Backstage within two frames runs without the "Running…" text. This is a small gap in the stated guarantee, not a data problem.
AGENTS.md
No violations found. Dropped clicks are not data, so the "Never silent" rule does not apply. The PR says so itself and asks for a notice if the maintainers want one. web_time::Instant is used. Tests use unwrap, which clippy.toml allows.
Change size
Compared with main (merge base b1995bb to PR head e22bb72).
opengeos#1223 marks a plugin's download "anonymous" where request_url queues it, so no saved login goes
with it. This branch keeps what was asked to answer the command when it runs again, so the mark
has to be in both sides of that comparison, or the rerun asks again and downloads again, up to its
limit: Session::asked_for gives both the same form. asked_by compares the two keys the front end
now passes on, "anonymous" and "connection", so a number lands only the read it was given for.
opengeos#1426 uses the test plugin name "ui-late" too, and tests run at once: this branch's is renamed.

Summary
Part of #1319. In the desktop app, a plugin command that waits for a server (
service.add, for example) holds the window with no sign that it has started, so users click again and the command runs again. This PR gives the window that sign and stops those clicks from running it again. The window still doesn't respond during the read. Leaving
service.addto the frame loop needs the rerun from #1341, so it is left for a second PR once that lands, and #1319 stays open until then.pluginstart(crates/ui-egui/src/pluginstart.rs):run_by_userno longer runs a plugin command at once. It queues the command, andlogicruns it on the third frame: asked, shown, run. Until then the status bar saysRunning BrasilData: Solos…and the cursor is the busy one, and both stay on screen while the thread waits.Session::opened, so it holds however the project was replaced.drop_stale_clicksdrops the pointer button events of the next frame, press and release alike. The window system holds those clicks until the command ends, so they were made for a window that wasn't answering. The app gets them throughraw_input_hook, now on every desktop platform.run_by_usertoo, so their commands get the same treatment.Scripts, tasks, the AI Assistant, attached agents and
rustgis-clidon't go throughrun_by_user, so their commands still run at once and return their answer.Limits
layer.addUrlleft a download runs again when it lands, and goes on with the layer (#1202) #1341, once merged) isn't shown this way, since it doesn't come from a click.Session::openeddoesn't change on undo, so the command runs in the restored project.Testing
pluginstart: a command isn't run before a frame has shown it, and runs once when asked twice; two commands run in turn whilerunstays immediate; stale clicks are dropped once, with pointer moves kept and later clicks untouched; a command waits for a held button, whose release then isn't lost, and doesn't wait once the window has lost focus, where the release, if it comes, still reaches egui; egui gives a frame after the one that ran the command, with none waiting; a new project drops the commands waiting, with one notice, and says nothing when none wait.tests/smoke.rs: the panel and ribbon tests now step 3 frames after a click, since the command runs on the third. New: a second click on a ribbon button across the start runs the command once.cargo xtask cion Windows onmainatf822ef0e: 3,742 tests pass.cargo test -p rustgis-ui-egui --lib(556 pass),--test smoke(97 pass), after mergingmain, cargo clippy -p rustgis-ui-egui --all-targets -- -D warnings.cargo check -p rustgis-web --target wasm32-unknown-unknown, before the review fixes.
