Summary

Lands the roadmap item Export into an existing GeoPackage as an added or replaced table, leaving its other tables (Next › Data at the source). Today export refuses an existing .gpkg (the fix for #852), so there's no way to put a layer into a county's multi-layer GeoPackage or refresh one of its layers.

share.exportLayer and share.exportTable take two optional parameters:

  • mode: newFile (the default, unchanged: an existing file is refused), addTable (one more table, or a new file when there's none) or replaceTable (the GeoPackage's feature or attribute table of that name, which must be there).
  • tableName: the table's name in the GeoPackage (default: the layer's or table's name).

Both are additive. Existing calls, scripts and saved projects behave as before.

Into an existing GeoPackage (crates/data/src/source/gpkg/add.rs):

  • One transaction. The export opens the file read-write in SQLite's defensive mode, with the schema untrusted, and writes in one IMMEDIATE transaction. A failed export, or one that starts again because a later feature needs a MULTIPOINT table or new ids, rolls back, so the file is left as it was.
  • Other tables are untouched. A replace drops only the named feature or attribute table, its R-tree, and its rows in gpkg_contents, gpkg_geometry_columns, gpkg_extensions, gpkg_data_columns, gpkg_metadata_reference and gpkg_ogr_contents (GDAL's cached feature count, which would otherwise outlive the table).
  • Refused, with the reason: a taken name when adding (compared without regard to case, as SQLite compares names); replacing a name that isn't there (a misspelt name would otherwise leave the old layer and add a duplicate); tiles, views, indexes and unregistered tables of that name; a file that isn't a GeoPackage.
  • Spatial reference systems are reused by EPSG code, or by definition for a custom one. A missing one is added. An attribute table adds none.
  • A layer read in place from the GeoPackage it goes into is read whole first. Streamed out of and into the same file, the export stalls on SQLite's locks: a 200,000-row probe was still blocked after 10 minutes.
  • Never silent: the result has table and replaced, and a notice says which table was added or replaced. For a replace it also says that the old table's indexes, triggers and column descriptions went with it.

The writer for new files is split into plan, create_table and register, so both paths share them. A new file holds the same tables and rows as before.

Desktop: when GeoPackage is the format, Export Features has an Into list (A new GeoPackage, A new table in a GeoPackage, A table replaced in a GeoPackage) and, for the last two, a Table name. The file is then picked with the open dialog rather than the save dialog, since it's kept, not replaced. The web app offers no GeoPackage export, as before. Python: Layer.to_file(..., mode=, table_name=).

Docs: docs/user-guide/sharing.md, data-formats.md and docs/python.md. ROADMAP moves the item to Done, which also retires its citation of the closed #852.

On coordinate first: this adds two optional parameters to existing commands and changes no ids, existing parameters, data model or project format. That's how crs was added in #521, so I've treated it as an open roadmap item.

Testing

  • cargo xtask ci: fmt, clippy, 3,649 tests passed, layers ok. cargo build --locked --target wasm32-unknown-unknown -p rustgis-web passed, and pre-commit run --all-files passed.
  • New tests:
    • data: add/refuse/replace keeping an attribute table and GDAL's counts; SRS reuse; replacing a table that isn't there; things it never replaces; non-GeoPackage files; a streamed export starting again inside its transaction, and one that fails leaving the file's bytes unchanged.
    • engine: both commands; a layer read in place exported back into its own file; parameter validation.
    • UI: the dialog's mode reaching the command, with the file picked to open.
  • Interop by hand with the release CLI and GDAL (pyogrio):
    • Built a county.gpkg with three tables in EPSG:4326 and EPSG:3857, then replaced its point table with polygons. PRAGMA integrity_check is ok, and GDAL reads every table with the right count, CRS and geometry type.
    • Took a GeoPackage written by GDAL, replaced one of its tables and added another. GDAL's stale gpkg_ogr_contents row is gone and its counts are right.

UI evidence

Export Features with GeoPackage chosen. Before:

Before: Layer and Format only

After, the default (a new file, as before):

After: an Into list, A new GeoPackage

After, adding a table to an existing GeoPackage:

After: A new table in a GeoPackage, with a Table name

…d table

share.exportLayer and share.exportTable take an optional mode (newFile, the
default, still refuses an existing file; addTable; replaceTable) and
tableName. Into an existing GeoPackage the export is one SQLite transaction:
a table added, or a feature or attribute table of that name replaced with its
spatial index and GeoPackage records, the file's other tables untouched and a
failed export leaving the file as it was. Export Features offers the choice
for GeoPackage on the desktop; Layer.to_file takes mode= and table_name=.

Walkthrough

GeoPackage exports now support adding a table to an existing file or replacing a named feature or attribute table. The change adds writer options and result metadata, exposes the options through export commands, Python, and the desktop interface, and updates documentation.

Changes: GeoPackage export

Layer / File(s) Summary
Writer options and routing
crates/data/src/io.rs, crates/data/src/export.rs, crates/data/src/source/gpkg.rs
Writers accept GeoPackage mode and table-name options and return optional write details. New-file creation uses the selected table name, while existing-file modes route to the add or replace writer.
Transactional add and replace
crates/data/src/source/gpkg/add.rs, crates/data/src/source/tests.rs, crates/data/src/export/tests.rs
The existing-file writer validates GeoPackage contents and replacement targets, then updates tables and metadata within a transaction. Tests cover add and replace behavior, refusal cases, preservation of other tables, and streamed-export failures.
Export command and Python API
crates/engine/src/cmd/share.rs, crates/engine/src/cmd/gpkg.rs, crates/engine/src/cmd/exports.rs, crates/engine/src/cmd/raster.rs, crates/engine/src/tests.rs, apps/rustgis-python/python/rustgis/__init__.py
Export commands validate options, include table metadata in results, and load same-file sources before writing. Source matching supports resets and replacement reporting. Layer.to_file forwards optional mode and table-name parameters.
Desktop export selection
crates/ui-egui/src/dialogs.rs, crates/ui-egui/src/lib.rs
The desktop dialog offers GeoPackage destination modes and a table-name field. Native export selects an existing GeoPackage for add or replace and forwards the selected path and options.
Documentation and roadmap
docs/python.md, docs/user-guide/sharing.md, docs/user-guide/data-formats.md, ROADMAP.md
Documentation describes export modes, table-name behavior, restrictions, and same-file handling. The roadmap marks desktop GeoPackage export as complete.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

[#852] is the only linked issue. Its state is closed, and it is marked as historical context only. No active directly linked target remains. No linked-issue coding requirement applies to this pull request. The pull request still adds the GeoPackage table export behavior that #852 described: export into an existing GeoPackage with add and replace modes that keep other tables. This is not an assessed requirement.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

All changed areas support the GeoPackage table export objective in the pull request description. Data layer: crates/data/src/io.rs, export.rs, source/gpkg.rs, source/gpkg/add.rs, and their tests add GpkgMode, GpkgTable, GpkgWritten, the add and replace writer, and the split of the new-file writer into plan, create_table, and register. Engine: cmd/share.rs and tests.rs add mode and tableName parsing, result reporting, and the same-file read-in-place rule. cmd/gpkg.rs adds reset_sources and editing. save_edits now calls reset_sources(..., false). This is a shared-helper refactor. Its behavior difference is the path comparison, which now compares Path values. The replace path needs this helper to keep open layers consistent. cmd/exports.rs adds an optional Wrote.then callback for the replacement refresh. raster.rs sets it to None, so its behavior is unchanged. UI: ui-egui dialogs.rs and lib.rs add the Into choice, the Table field, the file picker for existing-file modes, and export parameters. Python: Layer.to_file adds mode and table_name. Docs and ROADMAP: document the options and move the item to Done. The ROADMAP change also removes the closed #852 citation, as the description states. No change was found that is unrelated to the export objective.

Never silent: wrong-typed mode / tableName are ignored. ps() returns None for any non-string value, so "mode": 1 or "tableName": ["x"] silently falls back to newFile and the layer's name. The CLI and Python paths can send such values, and the caller gets no error. Suggested shape (the match arms stay as they are):

Suggested change
let mode = match ps(p, "mode").map(str::trim) {
let text = |key: &str| match p.get(key) {

};

Confidence: high. A regression test with "mode": 1 for a GeoPackage export would pin it.

Fixed in 936ea4a: mode and tableName that aren't strings are now refused ("mode must be a string") rather than taken for the default; the engine test covers both. Validated with cargo xtask ci (3,649 tests), the wasm build and pre-commit run --all-files.

A replace can break other objects without a notice. drop_table removes the table and its own records, but nothing checks for views or triggers on other tables that name it. SQLite allows that DROP TABLE and leaves them pointing at a missing table, so the next query or edit fails. The replace notice (report_table, share.rs) also lists only indexes, triggers and column descriptions, while this function also deletes gpkg_extensions, gpkg_metadata_reference and gpkg_ogr_contents rows, which it doesn't mention.

Possible fixes: refuse a replace when sqlite_master has a view or a trigger on another table whose SQL mentions the name, or name those objects in the notice. Either way the notice should also cover the deleted extension and metadata rows.

Confidence: medium-high (about 0.6). I'd confirm the SQLite behaviour with a test: a view over permits, replace permits, then read the view.

Fixed in 936ea4a. The table is recreated under the same name in the same transaction, so views and other tables' triggers read the new one rather than a missing table; they break only if a column they use is gone. The export now names them in a notice (GpkgWritten::dependents, tested with a view on the replaced table), and the replace notice lists every kind of record dropped (indexes, triggers, column descriptions, metadata links, extension records). Validated with cargo xtask ci (3,649 tests), the wasm build and pre-commit run --all-files.

Minor points, grouped. These may wait for the release quality pass:

  • same_file here repeats the one in crates/data/src/raster/gdal.rs. It could be shared.
  • GPKG_MODES (crates/ui-egui/src/dialogs.rs:591) is documented as (mode, name), but the second field is a display label.
  • The test at crates/data/src/source/tests.rs:2279 says the refused names leave the file unchanged, but it never compares the bytes after those refusals. It only checks that the index was added. A assert_eq!(std::fs::read(&path).unwrap(), before) after the loop's first two refusals would pin the claim.

In 936ea4a: GPKG_MODES now documents its second field as the label shown, and the test compares the file's bytes after the refusals. Sharing same_file with raster/gdal.rs is left for the release quality pass: that one is private to the data crate and falls back to comparing spellings, so sharing it means a small cross-crate API for a two-line helper.

Code review

I read the full diff (15 files) and the staged AGENTS.md, and checked the proposed source around the changes. The core design holds up: one transaction, defensive SQLite settings, a rollback on restart, and refusal of tiles, views and unregistered names. I found two real issues and one group of minor points. There were no prior review threads, so nothing was skipped as already raised.

Bugs

  • Wrong-typed mode or tableName is silently ignored (medium-low, confidence high). ps() returns None for non-strings, so "mode": 1 falls back to newFile and "tableName": ["x"] falls back to the layer name, with no error. This breaks the "never silent" rule for CLI and Python callers. Inline comment on crates/engine/src/cmd/share.rs:57, with a suggestion block.
  • A replace can leave other objects broken, with no notice (medium, confidence about 0.6). drop_table doesn't check for views or triggers on other tables that name the replaced table. SQLite allows the drop, so those objects fail later. The replace notice also omits the gpkg_extensions and gpkg_metadata_reference rows it deletes. Inline comment on crates/data/src/source/gpkg/add.rs:183.

Security

  • None found. The existing file is opened with defensive mode, trusted-schema off and a busy timeout, and the user chooses the file.

Performance

  • None significant. Streamed in-place layers are loaded whole before a write into their own file, which the PR documents as deliberate.

Quality (minor, may wait for the release quality pass)

  • same_file in share.rs:208 repeats the one in crates/data/src/raster/gdal.rs. The GPKG_MODES doc comment says (mode, name) but the second field is a label. The test at crates/data/src/source/tests.rs:2279 says refused names leave the file unchanged, but it never checks the bytes after those refusals. Grouped inline comment on share.rs:208.

AGENTS.md

  • No violations found. New UI strings use tl!, there are no unwraps in non-test code, there is no unsafe, the wasm gating is consistent, and the ROADMAP, docs and screenshots are updated.

Confidence is high for the first bug, medium-high for the second, and high for the nits.

Nitpick Strengthen the cancelled export assertion to compare file bytes.

4528-4530: 🎯 Functional Correctness | 🔵 Trivial | ⚡ Quick win

Strengthen the cancelled export assertion to compare file bytes.

The cancelled replaceTable call returns before any write. The current assertion checks only table names. A change that rewrote Cities during a cancelled export would still pass, because the table keeps its name. Comparing the file bytes before and after the cancelled call detects that regression.

Suggested fix
         // Cancelling the pick writes nothing.
+        let before = std::fs::read(&path).unwrap();
         app.run("ui.exportLayer", json!({"format": "gpkg", "mode": "replaceTable", "tableName": "Cities"})).unwrap();
         assert_eq!(rustgis_engine::data::source::layers(&path).unwrap(), ["Cities", "borders"]);
+        assert_eq!(std::fs::read(&path).unwrap(), before);

Review follow-up for the GeoPackage add/replace export: the file's own
triggers don't run while the export writes; a table in a related-tables
relation isn't replaced; another application's database is refused; views
and triggers elsewhere that name a replaced table are listed in a notice,
which also names every kind of record dropped; mode and tableName must be
strings. Docs: the Python example uses bound layers and the roadmap names
share.exportTable too.

The cancel check can't fail. pick_open takes the test path out of PICKED, so this second call is cancelled and writes nothing. But even if it wrote, it would replace Cities with the active layer's features under the same name, and the assertion on line 4530 only compares the table names, which stay ["Cities", "borders"] either way. The test therefore passes whether or not the cancel works.

Suggested fix: record the Cities feature count (or the file's bytes) before this call and assert it is unchanged afterwards. For example:

let before = std::fs::read(&path).unwrap();
app.run("ui.exportLayer", json!({"format": "gpkg", "mode": "replaceTable", "tableName": "Cities"})).unwrap();
assert_eq!(std::fs::read(&path).unwrap(), before, "a cancelled pick changes nothing");

Confidence: high (about 0.9).

The spatial-index drop doesn't check what it drops. The name comes from gpkg_geometry_columns in the file being written to, and DROP TABLE IF EXISTS runs on whatever table has that name. A file can hold an ordinary table called rtree_<table>_<column> (only the gpkg_, sqlite_ and rtree_ prefixes are reserved for new tables, and existing files aren't checked). Replacing <table> would then drop that unrelated table, and nothing is reported. That breaks "Never silent".

Suggested fix: drop the index only when the object is the spatial index. A virtual table's sql in sqlite_master starts with CREATE VIRTUAL TABLE, so check that before the DROP, or emit a notice for any extra table that gets dropped.

Confidence: low-medium (about 0.4). I have not run this against a crafted file.

Fixed in 21b22e1: drop_table drops rtree_<table>_<column> only when sqlite_master shows it is an R-tree virtual table. An ordinary table of that name is kept, and the replace is then refused (the new table's index needs the name), so nothing is dropped silently; the data test covers it. Validated with cargo xtask ci (3,649 tests), the wasm build and pre-commit run --all-files.

The streaming claim in this table is now incomplete. The GeoJSON/CSV row above still says that on the desktop a streamed layer goes to GeoPackage "a chunk at a time with no limit on its size". Exporting a streamed layer that is read in place from the same GeoPackage, into that file, now loads the whole layer first (from_target in export_layer, crates/engine/src/cmd/share.rs). That is a memory cost a reader of the docs wouldn't expect. Either note the exception here, or say it in the Exporting section of sharing.md.

Confidence: medium (about 0.6).

Bugs

  • Low-medium confidence (about 0.4): drop_table in crates/data/src/source/gpkg/add.rs:237 drops rtree_<table>_<column> without checking that it is the spatial index. A file can hold an unrelated table with that name, and replacing the table would drop it with no notice. Posted inline.
  • Low confidence (about 0.3, not posted): a streamed layer read in place from a GeoPackage keeps pointing at that table after replaceTable replaces it. Nothing tells the user the layer is now stale.

Security

  • None found. Identifiers go through quote(), which doubles embedded quotes. The file is opened with DEFENSIVE and TRUSTED_SCHEMA set, and triggers are turned off for the write.

Performance

  • None raised. The restart path re-feeds streamed input, but total and skipped reset on each pass, so the counts stay correct.

Quality

  • High confidence (about 0.9): the cancel check in crates/ui-egui/src/lib.rs:4529-4530 passes even if the cancel fails, because it only compares table names. Posted inline with a byte-compare fix.

AGENTS.md

  • Medium confidence (about 0.6): docs/user-guide/data-formats.md:478 still promises a chunked, unlimited-size GeoPackage export for streamed layers. The same-file case now loads the whole layer. Posted inline.
  • Medium confidence (about 0.5), in the PR body rather than the diff: the screenshot URLs point at Mavrick-F/rustgis-assets on raw.githubusercontent. AGENTS.md says images live in opengeos/rustgis-assets, served at assets.rustgis.app/images/….

Already raised, left alone (9 threads): the replace-breaks-dependents thread (now covered by the dependents notice and the expanded replace notice), the share.rs minor-points thread, the triggers thread (now handled by disabling triggers during the write), the application-id-0 thread (still open; the code accepts 0 on purpose, and no reply answers it), the Windows remove_dir_all thread (fixed by dropping the session first), the wrong-typed mode thread (fixed by gpkg_table), the Python parcels thread (now roads, bound at docs/python.md:261), the ROADMAP command-name thread (fixed), and the related-tables thread (fixed in 936ea4a).

I checked the wasm gate (gpkg is cfg(not(wasm32))), the reserved-name prefixing in plan(), the desktop export path, and the Python to_file keyword arguments. I found no other problems.

Nitpick Compare the file after the ownersidx refusal.

2287-2287: Trivial · Data Integrity & Integration · Quick win

Compare the file after the owners_idx refusal.

The byte check at line 2287 covers only the None and PERMITS refusals. It runs before the index is created. No comparison follows the owners_idx refusal, so a write made by that refusal is not detected. Take a snapshot after the index is created and compare the file after the loop. This adds coverage for the existing rollback behavior.

Suggested fix
     let before = std::fs::read(&path).unwrap();
+    let mut before_index = before.clone();
     for name in [None, Some("PERMITS"), Some("owners_idx")] {

… table

A table named as the replaced table's spatial index but not an R-tree is
now kept, and the replace refused, rather than dropped. The docs say that a
layer read in place from the GeoPackage it goes into is read whole first;
the UI and data tests compare the file's bytes after a cancelled pick and
after each refusal.

In-session layers that read the replaced table aren't refreshed. A replace drops and recreates a table that a layer in this session may read in place from the same file. The save-back path resets those sources (crates/engine/src/cmd/gpkg.rs:245-258, source.reset() for matching path and table), but this export doesn't, so the layer keeps its pre-replace state until it's reloaded. Nothing tells the user. A replace may also leave a cached version or revision that no longer matches the file.

Suggested fix: after a successful GeoPackage export into an existing file, reset the sources of layers that match that file and table, using the same loop as cmd/gpkg.rs.

Confidence: low-medium (about 0.35). I haven't reproduced it, and I haven't traced how a streamed in-place layer caches its features.

Fixed in 8f839d4. A save-back only changes rows, so it resets the view; a replace makes the table anew (its fields, geometry type and system may differ), so the export now reopens the source of every layer that reads that table in place, in every map, and says how many (reset_sources in cmd/gpkg.rs, shared by both paths). The engine test reads a layer in place, replaces its table with one of another geometry type, and checks the layer reports the new type and the notice. Validated with cargo xtask ci (3,649 tests), the wasm build and pre-commit run --all-files.

A table's identifier is dropped without a notice when another table already has its name as identifier. The CASE writes NULL as the identifier, so the table is registered without the identifier the export would normally give it, and the user isn't told. The export does report the table it wrote, but not this. Per "Never silent", the notice should say the identifier was left empty, or the identifier should get a unique variant such as name_2.

Confidence: medium (about 0.4). The loss is small (only the label), and this is an edge case on existing files.

Code review

I read the full diff, the new add.rs, the engine and UI call sites, and the 12 earlier review threads. Two new inline comments are posted (below). Nothing else in the diff looked wrong.

Bugs

  • In-session layers aren't refreshed after a replace (crates/engine/src/cmd/share.rs:224). Low-medium confidence (~0.35). The save-back path resets sources that match the file and table (cmd/gpkg.rs:245-258); this export doesn't.
  • Identifier silently becomes NULL when it clashes (crates/data/src/source/gpkg.rs:952). Medium confidence (~0.4). Only the label is lost, and nothing reports it.

Security

  • None found. The new export runs with defensive mode, untrusted schema, and trigger firing off. Hostile parameters are refused with errors, and there is no unwrap or unsafe in non-test code.

Performance

  • None significant. same_file costs two canonicalize calls per export, and from_target loads the source whole only when it is read in place from the target file.

Quality (may wait for the release quality pass)

  • report_table repeats the plural logic (if n == 1) twice. Confidence high, low impact.
  • into_existing returns Option<bool>, which is hard to read. An enum would be clearer.
  • export.rs has let _ = (gpkg, &mut table); in the wasm arm. It works, but it looks odd.
  • write_features has a long make closure that could be a named function.

AGENTS.md

  • The PR body's screenshots link to Mavrick-F/rustgis-assets, a personal fork. AGENTS.md says images live in opengeos/rustgis-assets. This is in the PR body, not a changed line, so I could not comment inline.
  • No other rule violations found. Interface text uses tl!, the new notices go through Session::notify, and the layering is unchanged.

Earlier threads

I left 12 earlier concerns alone. Each is either already addressed in the code or was answered with a reason I accept:

  • The add.rs dependents and replace-notice thread.
  • The share.rs nit and the same_file duplication, which the author deferred to the quality pass.
  • The lib.rs cancel test. It is still unresolved, but the current test compares file bytes, which is the suggested fix.
  • The streaming note in data-formats.md.
  • share.rs mode validation.
  • The add.rs squatted R-tree thread.
  • The trigger and application-id threads in add.rs.
  • The related-tables thread.
  • The tests.rs Windows cleanup thread.
  • The docs/python.md and ROADMAP.md threads.

Assert that the squatted file is unchanged after the failed replacement.

The squatted-table test checks only the error text and the surviving note row in rtree_sites_geom. A replacement that drops sites and commits before the index conflict would still pass. The plain rtree_sites_geom table survives that drop and satisfies both assertions. The failing path returns before tx.commit(), so the current code leaves the file unchanged. The gap is in test coverage, not in the production code.

A byte comparison detects any change to the file, including a lost sites table. The earlier refusal cases in this test already use the same check.

Assert the contents of the borders table in the addTable test.

The test checks only the table names after ui.exportLayer runs in addTable mode. It still passes if borders has no features or holds features from a different layer. The test sets Countries as the active layer before the export. Add an assertion that the feature count of borders matches the feature count of Countries.

Comment thread crates/data/src/source/gpkg/add.rs Resolved
A layer read in place from a table an export replaces now reopens its
source (fields, geometry type and system read again) and the export says
how many did; save-back still only resets the view. A table whose name
another table already uses as identifier gets a numbered identifier rather
than none. Only an R-tree (not rtree_i32) counts as the spatial index.

The reopen failure is dropped, and the notice still says success. let _ = source.reopen(); discards its Result. reset_sources counts the layer either way, and report_table (share.rs) then notifies "N layer reads X in place, now the new table" unconditionally. If the new table can't be opened, the layer does store the error (SourceLayer::open sets self.error), but the export reports success and the error only appears when the layer is next drawn. That breaks "Never silent".

Suggested shape: have reset_sources return the reopened and failed counts (failures with their message), and let report_table say how many layers failed and why.

Related: the count also includes layers whose source.table is None. Those may read a different table in the file, so "now the new table" can name layers that never read the replaced one.

Confidence: about 0.6 on the discarded result. I haven't run a failing reopen to confirm the stored-error path.

Fixed in 88c8a1f: reset_sources counts only the layers whose source reopened; a layer that can't reopen the new table keeps its error and is listed in an error notice ("… couldn't open the new table: ()") instead of the success notice. Re-raising the earlier identifier concern, since the code has changed. The NULL identifier is gone, but when another table already has this name as its identifier, the new table is now silently registered as name_2 (and so on). No notice says so, which still breaks "Never silent": readers show the identifier as the layer's label.

Suggested fix: add identifier: String to GpkgWritten, and have the export notice say when it differs from the table name (for example, "added the table X, with the identifier X_2 because X is taken").

Confidence: about 0.45. The collision needs an existing table whose identifier differs from its table name and matches the new name, so this is an edge case on existing files.

Leaving this as is: gpkg_contents.identifier is a human-readable label that GeoPackage requires to be unique, and readers address the table by table_name, which is what the export writes and reports in its result and notice. Taking <name>_2 only when another table already uses the name as its label keeps that constraint; no data or table name changes.

A possible silent loss in other tables, unverified. The PR says other tables are untouched, but DROP TABLE runs an implicit DELETE when foreign-key enforcement is on. A child table with REFERENCES <replaced table> ... ON DELETE CASCADE would then lose rows, and nothing reports it. SQLITE_DBCONFIG_ENABLE_TRIGGER doesn't stop foreign-key actions, and dependents only looks at views and triggers.

I couldn't check whether the bundled SQLite has foreign keys on by default, so this depends on that setting. Possible fixes: turn off SQLITE_DBCONFIG_ENABLE_FKEY on the export connection, the same way triggers are turned off, or refuse the replace when pragma_foreign_key_list names the table. A regression test with a cascading child table would settle it.

Confidence: about 0.3.

Good catch, and confirmed: the bundled SQLite here is built with SQLITE_DEFAULT_FOREIGN_KEYS=1, so DROP TABLE would run the implicit delete and an ON DELETE CASCADE (or SET NULL) child would lose rows. Fixed in 88c8a1f: a replace is refused when another table has a foreign key to the table, naming those tables; the data test adds a cascading child table and checks its row survives the refused replace. Validated on the merged head 5f6e54c with cargo xtask ci (3,750 tests), the wasm build and pre-commit run --all-files.

Code review

I found three new concerns in the changed code, plus a few nits. The earlier review threads are mostly addressed by the current code, so I left 13 of 14 alone. The one I re-raised is the identifier concern, because the code changed and the silent renaming is still there.

Bugs

  • Discarded reopen result breaks "Never silent" (crates/engine/src/cmd/gpkg.rs:153, confidence 0.6). let _ = source.reopen(); drops the Result, and the export then notifies "N layer reads X in place, now the new table" whether or not the reopen worked. The count can also include layers with no table name, which may read a different table.
  • Possible silent loss in other tables (crates/data/src/source/gpkg/add.rs:252, confidence 0.3, unverified). If foreign-key enforcement is on, DROP TABLE runs an implicit delete, so ON DELETE CASCADE child rows could vanish. The PR's claim that other tables are untouched depends on the bundled SQLite's default, which I couldn't check.

Security

  • None found. The hostile-file SQL uses quote(), DEFENSIVE and TRUSTED_SCHEMA are set, and the table names are sanitised.

Performance

  • None significant. from_target loads the whole layer into memory, but the docs state that tradeoff.

Quality

  • Silently renamed identifier (crates/data/src/source/gpkg.rs:952, confidence 0.45, re-raised). A colliding identifier becomes name_2 with no notice. This is the earlier thread's concern, with the new code.
  • Nits, for the release quality pass:
    • The Python change has no test of mode or table_name forwarding. apps/rustgis-python/tests/test_session.py:234 only calls to_file(out).
    • The replace notice always lists every record kind, even when none existed, and doesn't name gpkg_ogr_contents.
    • ui.exportLayer asks for a file before the engine checks for an active layer.

AGENTS.md

  • No unwrap, expect or unsafe in the new non-test code. The GPKG_MODES[0] indexing is on a constant array, and indexing_slicing isn't denied in this workspace.
  • Interface strings use tl!. The new strings aren't in the catalogs, which the guidelines allow.
  • I didn't verify the wasm build; the PR says it passed.

Earlier concerns left alone (13)

  • Addressed in the current code: the replace-breaks-dependents thread, the minor-points thread, the cancel-test thread, the data-formats streaming thread, the in-session refresh thread, the mode-type thread, the unchecked rtree drop, the destination-trigger thread, the application-id thread, the related-tables thread, the Windows cleanup thread, the python.md example thread, and the roadmap thread.
  • Still open but unchanged: the R-tree detection thread at add.rs:248. Matching using rtree( misses a newline or a quoted module name. The consequence is a refused replace, not data loss.

Assert the replaced layer's features, not only its source metadata.

After replaceTable, the test checks only source.info().geometry_type. reopen() updates that metadata, but the test does not run a blocking sync_source afterward or check the layer's features. A regression that refreshed the metadata while keeping the old features would still pass. Add a blocking sync_source after the export, then assert the feature geometry or count.

SQLite enforces foreign keys here, so dropping a table that another refers
to would delete or empty that table's rows: such a replace is now refused,
naming the tables. A layer that can't reopen a replaced table is reported,
not counted as reading it. The spatial index is recognised however its
declaration is spaced or quoted, still excluding rtree_i32.

Editable GeoPackage layers keep the replaced table's rows, with no notice. This re-raises the thread on share.rs (outdated, answered), with new evidence: the author's fix reopens only layers whose l.source is set. An editable layer (layer.addData/edit load, cmd/gpkg.rs:110-127) is loaded whole with l.gpkg = Some(GpkgEdit{..}) and ds.source set to the path, and no l.source. So this loop never reaches it. After a replace, that layer keeps the old rows and its old GpkgEdit revision and versions. The map shows obsolete data, and report_table doesn't count or name the layer. Saving is checked against the old versions, so it should be refused rather than overwrite, but the user isn't told why.

Suggested fix: count the editable layers whose l.gpkg matches the path and table, and say in the replace notice that they still show the old table until they are reloaded (or reload them). No test covers an editable layer, so one that replaces the table under one would pin it.

Confidence: about 0.6. I haven't run this against a real editable session.

Fixed in 3f9ebdb: a replace now names the layers loaded for editing from that table ("N layer(s) loaded for editing from X still show the old table's rows; Discard Edits loads the new one: …"), across every map. They aren't reloaded, as that would discard their unsaved edits; their save meets the existing conflict check. The engine test loads a table for editing, replaces it and checks the notice. Validated with cargo xtask ci (3,750 tests), the wasm build and pre-commit run --all-files.

mode and tableName are dropped without a word for non-GeoPackage formats. The engine refuses them for anything but .gpkg (gpkg_table in cmd/share.rs), but this branch falls through to the save dialog and ignores them. The dialog only sends them for GeoPackage, so this matters only for direct calls to ui.exportLayer. Under "Never silent", reject them the same way.

Code review

I read the full diff, the 25 earlier review threads, and the surrounding code. I checked the SQL identifier quoting (quote doubles embedded quotes), the save_edits refactor (it still compares against the same path), and whether the dialog can open without an active layer (need_layer gates it, so the None fallback is unreachable). I posted three inline comments.

Bugs

  • Non-string mode on ui.exportLayer is silently ignored (crates/ui-egui/src/lib.rs:3405). It falls back to newFile, so a GeoPackage export opens the save dialog and the requested mode is dropped with no notice. Confidence: high (about 0.85). Inline suggestion posted.
  • Foreign keys into gpkg_contents / gpkg_geometry_columns are not checked (crates/data/src/source/gpkg/add.rs:282). A user table with ON DELETE CASCADE to those tables could lose rows during a replace, with no notice. Confidence: low (about 0.25). Not reproduced.

Security

  • None found. Identifiers from the hostile file are quoted or passed as parameters, and the connection runs in defensive mode with trusted schema off.

Performance

  • None worth raising. The busy_timeout of 5 s can block the UI thread while another process holds a lock.

Quality

  • Substring match in dependents (add.rs:236). Replacing parcels also lists parcels_2's triggers as "may no longer work". Confidence: medium. I marked it for the release quality pass with <!-- quality-sweep -->.
  • Nit: the replace notice always lists "indexes, triggers, column descriptions, metadata links and extension records", even when none existed.

AGENTS.md

  • No violations beyond the mode item above. The new strings use tl!, and the ribbon and Python docs follow the existing conventions.

Earlier concerns

  • I left all 25 earlier threads alone and did not re-raise any. Several are fixed in the current code. The editable-layer thread (cmd/gpkg.rs:143) is now covered by the "still show the old table's rows" notice, even though its author never replied.

The export's connection no longer enforces foreign keys, so deleting a
replaced table's GeoPackage records can't cascade into a table referring
to them (one referring to the replaced table itself is still refused).
ui.exportLayer refuses a mode that isn't a string.

@coderabbitai full review

Since your last review (5f6e54c), on head 5bf6eab:

  • Export Features keeps the layer it was opened on (id and instance) and ui.exportLayer exports that one; ui.exportLayer refuses mode/tableName for other formats, refuses a non-string mode and passes tableName on as given.
  • A replace names the layers loaded for editing that still show the old rows.
  • The export's connection turns foreign-key enforcement off (a table referring to the replaced table is still refused); bracket-quoted R-tree declarations are recognised.

Validated with cargo xtask ci (3,750 tests), the wasm build and pre-commit run --all-files.

A layer that isn't a number silently exports the active layer. p.get("layer").and_then(Value::as_u64) returns None for "layer": "Countries" (or any non-number), so the else branch takes the active layer. Session::layer_id accepts a name or an id, so a caller that passes a name gets no error. With mode: "replaceTable" that overwrites the named table with the wrong layer's features, and nothing says so. The same applies to a non-number instance: the check is skipped with no error.

This breaks "Never silent". Suggested shape (refuse wrong types, keep the active-layer default for absent or null):

Suggested change
let Some(id) = p.get("layer").and_then(Value::as_u64) else {
fn export_target(&self, p: &Value) -> Result<u32, String> {
let id = match p.get("layer") {
None | Some(Value::Null) => {
return self.session.active_layer.ok_or_else(|| "select a layer in the Layers pane first".to_string());
}
Some(v) => v.as_u64().and_then(|n| u32::try_from(n).ok()).ok_or("layer must be a layer id")?,
};
let l = self.session.map().layer(id).ok_or("the layer Export Features was opened on is gone")?;
match p.get("instance") {
None | Some(Value::Null) => Ok(id),
Some(v) if v.as_u64() == Some(l.instance_id()) => Ok(id),
Some(_) => Err("the layer Export Features was opened on is gone".into()),
}
}

A regression test should send "layer": "Countries" with mode: "replaceTable" to ui.exportLayer and assert it is refused and the file is unchanged.

Fixed in 3215fc1: ui.exportLayer resolves layer with Session::layer_id, so it takes an id or a name as commands do and refuses one that isn't there; only a missing or null layer means the active layer. Code review

I read the full diff (1,879 lines), the staged metadata, the AGENTS.md copy, and the 40-odd prior review threads. I checked the new code against Session::layer_id, the save_edits refactor, and how unnamed GeoPackage sources resolve their table. The main path is well built: one IMMEDIATE transaction, defensive mode, triggers and foreign keys off during the write, and a rollback on every failure path.

Bugs

  • ui.exportLayer exports the active layer when layer isn't a number. export_target (crates/ui-egui/src/lib.rs:993) uses as_u64(), so "layer": "Countries" silently takes the active layer. With replaceTable, that overwrites a table with the wrong layer's features. A non-number instance also skips the identity check. Posted inline with a suggestion. Confidence: high (~0.8). Not raised before.

Security

  • None found. Table and index names go through quote() or come from constant lists. The existing file is opened read-write with trusted schema off.

Performance

  • None significant. The whole-layer load for an in-place source is a documented trade-off.

AGENTS.md

  • New user-visible errors in ui-egui ("mode must be a string" at line 3407, and the "layer … is gone" messages) are plain literals or format!, not tl!/i18n::fmt. The neighbouring lines already follow this pattern, so the rule is probably broken across the function, not only here. Confidence: medium (~0.4).

Quality (grouped nits, for the release quality pass)

  • The replace notice always lists indexes, triggers, column descriptions, metadata links and extension records, even when none were dropped (share.rs report_table).
  • When a registered table is missing on replace, the error says "choose another table name", although the user asked to replace it.
  • In register, the identifier loop's for i in 2.. shadows the fid_q binding i.

Already raised, left alone: 33 earlier threads. Of these, the reopen-failure notice, unnamed-source reopen, and identifier numbering were already answered or accepted by the author, and the rest were fixed in the PR or withdrawn. I did not re-raise any of them. The one thing I checked in those threads is that reset_sources still includes unnamed sources, which the author explicitly accepted.

tableName is dropped without a notice when mode is newFile. The GeoPackage branch above forwards tableName, but this path (the default, newFile) sends only layer and path. A direct ui.exportLayer call with {"format": "gpkg", "tableName": "Counties"} therefore writes a new file whose table is named after the layer, although share.exportLayer honours tableName for a new GeoPackage. That breaks "Never silent". The dialog never sends tableName in this mode, so this only affects direct calls.

Forwarding it as the other branch does fixes it:

Suggested change
return self.run("share.exportLayer", json!({"layer": id, "path": path}));
let mut args = json!({"layer": id, "path": path});
if let Some(table) = p.get("tableName") {
args["tableName"] = table.clone();
}
return self.run("share.exportLayer", args);

Confidence: high (about 0.85).

Left for the release quality pass. This path is ui.exportLayer called directly; the dialog sends tableName only with addTable/replaceTable. Nothing is written wrongly or unreported: newFile writes a new file, and share.exportLayer's result names the table it wrote. Forwarding tableName here too (the command accepts it with newFile) is a small consistency improvement for scripts.

Done after all in 60f43a0, as part of the same change: tableName is passed on with a new file too.

The instance check is still skipped for a value that isn't a number. The earlier thread on this function was answered for layer, but and_then(Value::as_u64) still returns None for "instance": "7", and the _ arm then accepts the id without the check. A reused id can then be exported, which is the case the check exists for, with no error. Refusing a non-number here matches the layer handling. Absent or null still means "no check":

Suggested change
match p.get("instance").and_then(Value::as_u64) {
Some(instance) if instance != l.instance_id() => Err("the layer Export Features was opened on is gone".into()),
_ => Ok(id),

Some(v) if v.as_u64() == Some(l.instance_id()) => Ok(id),
Some(_) => Err("the layer Export Features was opened on is gone".into()),
}

Confidence: about 0.6. This is the part of the earlier thread that the reply doesn't address.

Left for the release quality pass. instance is the dialog's own value (always the layer's instance_id() as a number); a script calling ui.exportLayer passes layer alone, which is resolved and checked as commands resolve it. Refusing a non-number instance would only tighten that internal parameter.

Bugs

  • ui.exportLayer drops tableName when mode is newFile (crates/ui-egui/src/lib.rs:3439). The GeoPackage branch forwards it, but the default branch sends only layer and path, so a direct call writes a new file named after the layer. The dialog never sends this combination, so only direct callers are affected. Confidence: high (about 0.85).
  • instance check is skipped when instance is not a number (crates/ui-egui/src/lib.rs:1012). The earlier thread was answered for layer, but and_then(Value::as_u64) still turns "instance": "7" into "no check", so a reused id is exported without error. Confidence: about 0.6.

Security

  • No findings. The SQL identifiers go through quote(), the file is opened without CREATE, and the defensive, trusted-schema, trigger and foreign-key settings are applied before any writes.

Performance

  • No findings.

Quality

  • Nits for the release quality pass: report_table always lists the dropped record kinds even when none existed. export_mode refuses "tableName": null for non-GeoPackage formats, while gpkg_table treats null as absent. GPKG_MODES[0] indexes a constant.

AGENTS.md

  • Nothing new. Every unwrap, expect and panic in the changed non-test code is absent, and the new user-visible strings are wrapped in tl!.

I left 29 of the 30 earlier threads alone. Most are fixed or were answered with evidence. The instance part of the lib.rs:993 thread is re-raised above. Two items I left alone as the author and reviewers already settled them: unnamed in-place sources are reopened on any replace, and the prefix match in the view and trigger notice.

Assert that the rejected GeoJSON export does not call download.

The assertions at lines 4556-4557 check the returned error and that no Shapefile notice was added. Neither checks for a download. The with(true) download closure at line 4535 records no calls. If the browser export delivered the GeoJSON bytes before the mode check and still returned the error, both assertions would pass.

Record calls in a counter that the closure shares with the test, such as Rc<Cell<usize>>. Then assert that the count is zero after the rejected ui.exportLayer call. The export checks the mode before it downloads, so this assertion holds at the current head.

Add a test for a stale layer instance in ui.exportLayer.

ui.exportLayer checks mode and tableName with share.exportLayer's own
parser before asking for a file (an unknown mode, a padded or empty value
read as the command reads them) and passes them on as given, tableName with

A table name changed on a new GeoPackage is not reported. plan() renames a requested name that starts with gpkg_, sqlite_ or rtree_ to layer_…, and turns an empty name into layer. For NewFile this block does nothing, so share.exportLayer {"layer":"Cities","path":"new.gpkg","tableName":"gpkg_cities"} writes layer_gpkg_cities and the only sign is the JSON table field. The notice says just "Exported …". The AddTable/Replace notices already name the written table, so only NewFile needs this.

Confidence: about 0.6. Severity is low, since it only comes from scripts, the CLI or Python passing tableName.

Left for the release quality pass. The prefixing of a reserved name (gpkg_, sqlite_, rtree_ → layer_…) and an empty name → layer predate this PR and apply to every new GeoPackage; share.exportLayer's result carries the table name actually written (table), so a caller sees it. A notice for the rename would suit a separate change covering the new-file path too.

The replace notice leaves out the replaced table's own GeoPackage record. drop_table deletes its gpkg_contents row, which holds the identifier and description, and register then writes a new row with an empty description and the table name as identifier. Neither is listed, although column descriptions are. Under "Never silent" the notice should name them too.

Confidence: about 0.5. The wording may simply be a gap; the behaviour matches what the replace is meant to do.

Left for the release quality pass: wording of the replace notice. The replaced table's own gpkg_contents row (its identifier and description) is rewritten for the new table, which the notice's "replaced its table" covers; naming the description explicitly would make it fuller.

Code review

I read the full diff against the repo guidelines and the 35 earlier review threads. Most of the earlier concerns are fixed, and the replace path's transaction, foreign-key, trigger and R-tree handling hold up on reading. I found two low-severity "Never silent" gaps, both posted inline.

Bugs

  • No new correctness bugs found. Checked the transaction rollback on redo and error paths, the foreign-key and trigger switches, the R-tree name detection, and the save_edits path change. Nothing confirmed.

Security

  • None found. Identifiers are bound or quoted, the hostile-file settings are in place, and the new code has no unwrap or indexing on input.

Performance

  • Exporting a layer that reads in place from the same file now loads the whole layer into memory. This is a documented tradeoff, so no change is requested.

Quality

  • Duplicated canonicalize-and-compare logic: same in reset_sources and editing in cmd/gpkg.rs repeats same_file in share.rs. Left for the release quality pass.
  • The new Python Layer.to_file(mode=, table_name=) parameters have no test. The existing test_session.py to_file test is the place to add one. Left for the release quality pass.

AGENTS.md

  • Never silent, confidence ~0.6 (inline): a NewFile export renames a requested tableName (gpkg_ / sqlite_ / rtree_ prefix becomes layer_…, empty becomes layer) with no notice. Only the JSON table field shows it.
  • Never silent, confidence ~0.5 (inline): the replace notice lists dropped records but not the replaced table's own gpkg_contents description and identifier.
  • Low: the PR body links screenshots from the author's fork (Mavrick-F/rustgis-assets). docs/contributing.md says images live in opengeos/rustgis-assets, and PR attachments are fine. The fork link will break if the fork moves.

Already raised, left alone

I left 35 earlier threads alone. Of those, 31 were fixed or resolved and 4 were answered and declined (identifier numbering, unnamed-source reopen, the prefix match in the notice, and the non-numeric instance skipping the check). I did not re-raise the instance point, though the author's answer does not cover a script sending a string instance.

Code review

I found no new blocking issues in the changed code. I read the whole diff and the prior threads, then checked the proposed source around the risky paths. I did not build or run the tests, so this rests on reading the code, not on CI output.

Bugs: None new. I checked the transaction and rollback paths (including the MULTIPOINT and renumber restarts), the SRS id lookup and creation, the table replace and drop path, the background export path, and the save_edits refactor (behaviour unchanged; Path equality only differs on normalisation). Each one behaves as the docs say.

Security: None new. Identifiers from the target file go through quote(), which doubles embedded quotes. Values are bound parameters. The connection to a user's existing file runs with defensive mode, untrusted schema and triggers off, and foreign keys off. The FK and related-table guards refuse replacements that would break other tables.

Performance: None new. Reading a layer that lives in the target file whole before writing is a memory trade-off, and the docs state it.

Quality: Nothing new worth an inline comment. Anything left is a release-quality-pass item.

AGENTS.md: No new violations found.

  • No unwrap, expect, panic, or indexing of input in non-test code.
  • Dialog labels use tl!, matching the existing SEPARATORS and KINDS pattern.
  • Layering holds: engine depends on data types only.
  • Docs and the Python wrapper match the command parameters.
  • No Python .pyi stub needs updating.

Earlier concerns: I left 7 alone because they are already raised and were declined, accepted as a limitation, or are release-quality points. They are the prefix match in the dependents notice, the non-number instance check, the NewFile rename notice, the replace-notice wording, the identifier _2 notice, the unnamed-source table switch, and the same_file duplicate. The author's reply on the reset_sources thread addressed only the reopen-failure part. The unnamed-source part, where "now the new table" can be wrong in a file with several tables, is still open. It is low impact, so I did not re-post it.

A layer that is neither a number nor a name still exports the active layer. The earlier thread on this function was answered for strings. But Session::layer_id (crates/engine/src/lib.rs:1942) has a catch-all arm that returns the active layer for any other value, so "layer": true, [] or {} passes this check. With mode: "replaceTable", {"format": "gpkg", "mode": "replaceTable", "tableName": "Cities", "layer": true} then overwrites Cities with the active layer's features and reports success. That breaks "Never silent". The command path (cmd/share.rs:194) takes the same fallback, so the fix belongs in layer_id: an absent or null layer keeps the active-layer default, and any other non-id, non-name value is refused.

            _ => match p.get("layer") {
                None | Some(Value::Null) => {
                    self.active_layer.filter(|id| map.layer(*id).is_some()).ok_or_else(|| "select a layer in the Layers pane first".to_string())
                }
                Some(other) => Err(format!("layer must be an id or a name, not {other}")),
            },

This touches every command that takes layer, so it may be better as its own change. Confidence: about 0.55.

Left for the release quality pass. This is Session::layer_id's existing handling, shared by every command that takes layer (a value that is neither a number nor a text falls back to the active layer); ui.exportLayer now resolves layer the way those commands do, on purpose. Tightening it for all commands is a change of its own rather than part of this export.

Code review

Bugs

  • Session::layer_id falls back to the active layer for any layer value that is neither a number nor a name, such as true, [] or {}. Through ui.exportLayer with replaceTable that overwrites the named table with the active layer's features. The earlier thread was answered for strings only. Posted inline at crates/ui-egui/src/lib.rs:1006, with a fix in layer_id. Confidence about 0.55.

Security

  • No new findings. The new GeoPackage path opens existing files with DBCONFIG_DEFENSIVE and TRUSTED_SCHEMA off, and disables triggers and foreign keys during the export. Identifiers are quoted with quote(), which escapes ". The one stricter guard I checked, the foreign-key refusal, is already in the code.

Performance

  • No material issues. The in-place source is read whole when it is exported back into its own file. That cost is documented in sharing.md and data-formats.md.

Quality

  • Low confidence (about 0.3): an AddTable into a file that still has stale gpkg_ogr_contents, gpkg_extensions, gpkg_data_columns or gpkg_metadata_reference rows under the new name keeps those rows, so they can attach to the new table. I have not reproduced this.
  • The wasm stub in write_chunks_to (let _ = (gpkg, &mut table);) works but reads awkwardly. This is a nit for the release quality pass.

AGENTS.md

  • Native-only code is kept out of wasm: the gpkg module is cfg(not(wasm32)), so add.rs does not affect the wasm build.
  • No unwrap, expect or panic appears in non-test code in the diff.
  • New dialog strings are wrapped in tl!. No new dependencies were added.

Prior reviews: 39 threads are on this PR. I did not re-post any concern that was fixed or withdrawn. I left alone the earlier concerns that the author declined as quality points: the instance check for non-number values, the _2 identifier numbering, the table-switch edge case, the new-file table-name rename, the replace-notice wording, the prefix match in the dependents notice, and the table-less layer count in reset_sources. Only the layer fallback above is new.
