Summary

Part 3 of 3 for #1033. Stacked on #1347 (the analysis plane): until that merges, this diff includes its commit; the change here is fix(analysis): measure radius searches on the ground near a pole, and meet at the poles and its review follow-ups (the commits after it that aren't merges of part 1). Part 2 also changes crates/engine/src/cmd/design.rs (its Move, Rotate and Scale; here only Validate Topology's warning), and the two merge cleanly in either order.

Radius searches (network::within, behind Select By Radius and analysis.neighborhood) measured every shape in local Web Mercator about the center, which clamps at ±85.05°. Now each shape is measured one of two ways, whatever the radius, so a larger radius never loses a row (to within the steps' sag):

  • when the center lies within ±85.05° and the shape's box does too: in local Web Mercator, exactly as before;
  • otherwise on the ground: 0 when the center lies in a polygon (in the analysis plane, as the other tools see it, at its longitude moved by whole turns into the polygon's box, at every turn the box spans, so a cap written from 0° to 360° holds a center at 10°W, written −10°, 710° or −370°; the first four turns are free, each further one counts against the step budget below, and past them a polygon whose remaining turns the budget can't pay for counts at its bound at once, spending none); else the least distance to its points and edges, each edge followed as the plane draws it, in steps of at most half a degree of longitude and of latitude, and measured in an azimuthal equidistant plane at the center (to within the steps' sag: up to about 125 m within 5,000 km; farther, more, but only ever nearer).

From the tests:

  • 50 km from 89°N reaches a point 33.5 km north of it on its own meridian, and not one 55.8 km away.
  • 120 km around the South Pole reaches 89°S (111.7 km) and not 88.9°S (122.9 km).
  • From 85°N, a cap cut at ±180° whose edge runs along 85.5°N is as far as that edge, not as far as the pole.
  • From 80°N, 1,600 km reaches a point at 86°N on the far side of the pole, 1,563 km away over it.
  • A meridian from pole to pole is about 79 km from a point a degree east of it at 45°N, not 0 by a chord across the world.
  • A line passing the center's antipode, where the plane at the center tears, is measured over the pole, not along a chord across the tear.

Bounded on hostile layers. A point or edge whose box can't come within the radius, or nearer than one already measured, isn't measured; the box's distance is a lower bound, on a sphere of WGS 84's least radius of curvature, from the central angle's tangent, which rounds little at any distance (an arccosine rounds to centimeters at short range), less a centimeter (tests check it against GeographicLib, a box in the far hemisphere and one micrometers away included). On the ground the center's longitude is taken within ±180° once, so a center written at 1e300° is where that longitude falls (0°) for every measure there; Web Mercator takes it as written, as before (a center at 180° still finds a point at 179.9°, and one at 190° a point written 190.1°). One search measures at most 250,000 points and steps in all (an edge's start counts too, unless the edge before ended there); past that, a point or edge counts as near as its box, so a shape may be counted in that's farther than the radius, never left out, and Select By Radius and the Neighborhood Explorer say how many features of each layer were (network::within_counted; within keeps its signature). A polygon is projected to test whether it holds the center only when its box does, an edge reuses the measurement of the vertex the last one ended at, and an edge along a pole (as rings cut at ±180° are closed) is measured once, as the point it is on the ground. A test runs 200 lines, each going 348 times around 89.95°N (about 50 million steps): all 200 still count, at 5.5–5.6 km for 5.6 km; an engine test runs 300 through the Neighborhood Explorer, which says 299 were counted at their bound.

Select By Radius still takes centers within ±85.05° only (its outline is drawn in Web Mercator); analysis.neighborhood takes any. The user guide says a feature reaching beyond 85.05° may be selected outside the outline, or left out inside it.

Features that meet only at a pole. The analysis plane, like longitude and latitude, draws a pole as a line, so wedges at 0°E and 90°E reaching 90°S were apart there. Features that both reach a pole (within POLE_TOLERANCE, 1e-7°, about a centimeter) now meet there, whatever their longitudes:

  • in Select By Location and Spatial Join's Intersects, through Spatial Join's index too (all 20 wedges around the South Pole are found);
  • in Clip, the overlays (Intersect, Identity, Union, Symmetrical Difference), Erase, Split, Summarize Within and Spatial Join's "Have their center in", where a point at a pole touches a polygon reaching it, as a point on its edge does (a line or polygon meeting one only at a pole has no part in it, so these add pole-reaching polygons only for points).

Each of these tools now looks features up in an extent index (ExtentIndex, which upstream added to them since the plan), where a pole point's extent doesn't meet a polygon's at another longitude. So the features reaching each pole are listed beside the index (AtPoles) and added to its candidates, kept sorted and once each; Select By Location charges the lists to its memory budget. A test with 24 points and 21 polygons (past the 16 at which the index builds its grid, and a pole point outside the index's whole extent) checks each tool, and fails with the lists taken out of any one of them.

A point at a pole also counts as covered (Must Be Covered By) by polygons that together surround the pole, not by ones that just reach it at a corner or leave a gap: polygons, of one feature or several, such that lines 0.13 m (just past the overlays' pole tolerance, so the two agree on what reaches the pole), 1 m, 10 m, … 100 km off the pole in the plane (1.1 cm to 8.7 km on the ground) lie inside them all the way around, out to the first line wholly outside them (where a small cap ends), but for gaps under a meter (9e-6° of longitude), the seams the overlays' rounding leaves; each polygon taken on its own (so overlapping parts don't cancel), however their longitudes are written (from −180° to 180°, from 0° to 360°, or in parts, either way). A point near the pole inside a polygon is covered as anywhere else. A gap reaching the pole, between two polygons, in one's outline, or a hole no other polygon fills, is only millimeters wide a meter off it in the plane (a 0.5° gap from 85°S is 8.6 mm), as narrow as a seam, but widens away from the pole, so one of the lines catches it, whether its sides run along meridians or slant. The check leans to reporting: a gap that wide crossing one of the lines counts even if it doesn't reach the pole. (Tracking whether such a gap reaches the pole proved fragile in review: gaps whose sides slant drift sideways from line to line.) The lines' crossings with each ring are worked out exactly (an overlay's clip would round them to a centimeter grid, losing a gap that narrow), a polygon's stretches inside its outline less those inside its holes. A polygon whose crossings can't be worked out (a coordinate missing or infinite there, or a million turns around, where a meter is lost in rounding) doesn't count, and the check says so: when the rest don't surround the pole, or might not have with them, it counts the features it left out there (Checked::skipped, each once across both poles; one whose latitudes miss the pole's lines plays no part), and Validate Topology warns once, naming each rule with its point and polygon layers ("Must Be Covered By on 'Pole': 1 feature(s) of 'Caps'"). For the maintainer: at a pole, a point is covered when it's inside the union of the covering polygons, while elsewhere a point on the boundary between two polygons (even two parts of one feature) is still reported, as before, because containment there excludes the boundary; whether the rest of Must Be Covered By should follow is a separate question. A wedge clipped by the overlays keeps its pole vertices within the tolerance, so it still meets the others there. Distances already met at the pole, measured on the ground, as do line ends in the dangle check (part 1).

An invalid center (a latitude past ±90°, a missing coordinate) or radius (missing, negative) reaches nothing rather than being clamped, and analysis.neighborhood, which passed an invalid center through unchecked, now refuses it. A line's part or a polygon's ring of one point (closed or not) is measured as that point, and an edge of no length, like one along a pole, as its point, once (so a vertex repeated beside a missing coordinate is still found).

Trade-offs. Every feature measured on the ground is within the radius, to the steps' sag (up to about 125 m within 5,000 km; farther, more, but only ever nearer), until the step budget runs out. Features within ±85.05°, searched from a center within it, are measured in local Web Mercator as on main, which can take one up to about 1.7 times the radius away on the ground, or miss one less than half the radius away, or one just across ±180° (179.9° and −179.9° at 60°N, 11 km apart; the user guide already calls the outline approximate). So the measure changes at 85.05°, and with it the result: from 85°N at 1,000 km, a point at 128.35°E just within 85.05° is 1,245 km away in local Web Mercator and left out, while one a centimeter north, beyond it, is measured on the ground (1,000 km) and taken; from 80°N at 600 km, a point at 85.06°N (565 km) is taken and one at 85.0°N (558 km on the ground, 770 km in local Web Mercator) isn't, as on main. A shape's box decides its measure, so one far vertex beyond 85.05° has a whole feature measured on the ground. The step budget is shared by the whole search (one layer: Select By Radius and the Neighborhood Explorer search each layer on its own), so which shapes fall back to their boxes depends on row order, and their distances are then lower bounds; at most it adds shapes, and the tools say how many. Many points at a pole and many polygons reaching it make each point a candidate for every such polygon, as points inside many overlapping polygons are anywhere.

Not changed here (as on main): a shape within ±85.05° searched from a center within it is measured in local Web Mercator, which doesn't go over the pole: 2,300 km from 80°N doesn't reach 80°N on the far side (a test pins this). Spatial Join's Contains, Within and Largest overlap still see a pole as a line (a point at a pole lies on a cap's boundary in the plane); I'll take those up in a follow-up. Spatial Join and Near measure distances to long edges as geodesics, while the overlays and radius searches follow them straight in the plane. A clipped pole point's mask is checked for the pole from its box after the overlay's union, which rounds a world-sized mask to about 5 cm in the plane, within the tolerance (about 13 cm there); masks written billions of meters east or west would round coarser.

Testing

  • cargo xtask ci (fmt, clippy -D warnings, all tests, layers) and cargo build --target wasm32-unknown-unknown -p rustgis-web: pass on this branch.
  • New, in crates/analysis/tests/polar.rs (9 tests): points at a pole found through each tool's index (Clip, Intersect, Erase, Split, Summarize Within, "Have their center in"), with 24 points and 21 polygons; the radius results above; edges followed along a box, a cap, a meridian from pole to pole and lines past the center's antipode; the hostile lines past the step budget; a larger radius never losing a feature, within ±85.05° and beyond it (where the larger radius leaves too few steps for it, it counts at its box's distance); wedges reaching the same pole meeting in Select By Location and Spatial Join (Intersects and Closest), and not across poles; a clipped wedge still meeting another at the pole; Spatial Join finding all 20 wedges at the pole through its index; points at a pole (at two longitudes, and 5e-8° off it) kept by Clip and counted by Summarize Within for a wedge reaching it, and covered only by polygons surrounding the pole (a cap written either way, in halves meeting, a seam apart or overlapping, in two features, in parts written both ways, with an island far west; not with a 10° or a 1° gap, nor with a hole reaching the pole, wide or narrowing to a corner there, unless another polygon fills it, nor halves with a gap narrowing to the pole between them (1° and 0.5° wide at 85°S), nor one with a notch narrowing to it, nor halves with a slanting 0.5° gap between them, nor a cap stopping 5e-7° short of the pole or a notch ending 4e-7° short of it, nor a polygon whose hole beside its outline or filling a notch in it would close a gap if its crossings were paired together; while a cap 110 m across still holds it, in halves a seam apart too, and a hole near the pole that doesn't reach it is reported, nor with a longitude infinite or written 1e15° away), while one 5e-8° off it inside the wedge is covered by the wedge; a cap written from 0° to 360° holding a center written −10°, 710° or −370°; an invalid center or radius finding nothing (and an invalid center refused by analysis.neighborhood); a polygon ring of one point, written once or closed. In the engine: the Neighborhood Explorer saying how many features it counted at their bound past the step budget, and nothing when it measured them all; Validate Topology warning which polygons Must Be Covered By left out at a pole, and saying nothing of the kind for a whole cap. From review: a center tried at every turn a polygon spans (a block 1,440° on, its fifth turn, is found; a sliver a billion degrees long counts as bounded past its first four turns, at once, and a line after it is still measured, while a center at its first turn is found exactly; a wedge written 1e19° on, where turns can't be counted one by one, takes no steps); a polygon left out at a pole counted by the check, not one whose latitudes miss the pole (in either row order), a feature of two parts once, features left out at both poles together, and one reaching the line where a small cap ends. Unit tests: a box's least distance is never more than its nearest point's, a box in the far hemisphere and one micrometers away included; points count against the step budget, and a search counts the rows it found past it, at a distance that's a bound (and not one measured in full), and an edge over 512° long as bounded; an edge along a pole is measured once, and the edge going on from it doesn't measure its start again; a ring of one point is measured once, and a vertex repeated beside a missing coordinate found; a center written at 1e300° finds what one at 0° does, and centers at 180° and 190° within ±85.05° find what they did.
  • Against part 1 alone (this branch's polar.rs on its parent commit): all 9 new tests fail; part 1's 12 pass on both.

…os#1033)

The tools worked in Web Mercator, which clamps latitudes to ±85.0511°, so polar
vertices landed on 85.05°: Clip returned nothing, Dissolve no geometry, and
Simplify, Minimum Bounding Geometry and Feature To Point collapsed polygons
between 87°S and 89°S onto 85.0511°S.

They now work in one analysis plane, `lonlat_to_plane`/`plane_to_lonlat` in
rustgis-geom: Web Mercator bit for bit within ±85.0511°, continued beyond at
the slope it reaches there, so nothing is clamped and the poles lie at
±26,424 km. Like `lonlat_to_merc` since opengeos#1001, it keeps longitudes unwrapped.
convert.rs (every overlay and geometry tool), Clip's point test and its
candidate index, the convex hull, Near's shared point and the topology checks
go through it; `lonlat_to_merc` is unchanged for drawing, tiles and (until a
later change) radius searches. Coordinates within ±85.05° project as before; a
result can change where an edge crosses 85.05°, which the plane keeps straight
where Web Mercator clamped its far end.

Tools added since the plan follow the plane too:
- Geodesic buffers split an outline's edges against edges straight in the
plane, so beyond 85.05° (where they were left whole) a buffer keeps its
  distance between vertices as elsewhere.
- Tabulate Intersection measures areas with each edge straight in the plane
(a rhumb line within ±85.05°, straight in longitude and latitude beyond), so
a polar class's share and a zone's percentage are no longer taken as if its
part beyond 85.05° had no area, and a class wholly beyond it gets its row.
Its notice about the 85.05° limit is gone; the guide says how `area_km2`,
along the shortest way between vertices, and the percentages can differ
  near a pole.
- Kernel Density leaves out a point (a multipoint's member too) its coordinate
system can't hold, as Web Mercator can't one past 85.05°, rather than piling
it on the edge, and says how many it left out.

Beyond 85.05° the plane stretches east–west by sec(latitude) but north–south by
a constant sec(85.05°), and a pole is a line in it. A dangle end there is
measured in the azimuthal equidistant projection about its pole, at WGS 84's
curvature there, up to the pole and across ±180°: against the parts in the
grid cells within its reach, and of each edge only the stretch within reach,
in pieces that stray from it (a spiral in that frame) by at most a thousandth
of the tolerance. Cells, entries, parts opened and pieces count against the
work limit. The grid is sized for 85.0511° rather than 85°, so an end between
the two no longer misses a neighbor in the next cell, and it fills only the
cells within the lines' extent.

For a feature wholly beyond 85.05°, Simplify already converts its tolerance with
a scale no larger than the smaller of the plane's two, so it drops nothing
farther than the tolerance on the ground.
… meet at the poles (opengeos#1033)

Radius searches (network::within, behind Select By Radius and
analysis.neighborhood) measured in Web Mercator, which stops at 85.05°: 50 km
from 89°N reached a point 33.5 km away as 0 km. A shape that reaches beyond
85.05°, or any shape from a center beyond it, is now measured on the ground,
in an azimuthal equidistant plane at the center, each edge followed as the
analysis plane draws it in half-degree steps; a center inside a polygon in the
plane is 0. On the ground the center's longitude is taken within ±180° once,
so every measure there sees the same place however it's written. How a shape
is measured doesn't depend on the radius, so a larger radius never loses a
row; a shape within ±85.05° from a center within it is measured in local Web
Mercator as before, even where the shortest way runs over the pole. The
Neighborhood Explorer takes a center anywhere up to the poles; Select By
Radius still takes centers within ±85.05°, as it did.

A point or edge is bounded below by its longitude/latitude box (the least
central angle to it, from its tangent, on a sphere of WGS 84's least radius of
curvature, less a centimeter): one that can't come within the radius, or
nearer than one already measured, isn't measured. A search measures at most
250,000 points and steps in each layer, and at most 1,024 steps along one
edge; past them, a point or edge counts as near as its box, so a shape may be
counted in that's farther than the radius, never left out. Select By Radius
and the Neighborhood Explorer warn, once, how many features of each layer
have a distance that's such a bound.

The analysis plane, like longitude and latitude, draws a pole as a line, so
features meeting only at a pole (wedges at 0°E and 90°E reaching 90°S) were
apart there. Features that both reach a pole, within POLE_TOLERANCE, now meet
there in Select By Location and Spatial Join's Intersects; a point at a pole
falls in a polygon reaching it in Clip, the overlays (Intersect, Identity,
Union, Symmetrical Difference), Erase, Split, Summarize Within and Spatial
Join's "Have their center in", which count touching as meeting. Each of these
tools now looks features up in an extent index, where a pole point's extent
doesn't meet a polygon's at another longitude, so the features reaching each
pole are listed beside the index and added to its candidates (Select By
Location charges that list to its memory budget).

Must Be Covered By counts only the inside, so a point at a pole is covered by
polygons that together surround the pole: lines from 0.13 m (just past the
pole tolerance) to 100 km off it in the plane lie inside them all the way
around, but for gaps under a meter (9e-6° of longitude), the seams the
overlays' rounding leaves, out to the first line wholly outside them. A gap
reaching the pole, between polygons, in an outline, or a hole no other polygon
fills, however narrow beside it, widens away from it, so it counts once it's
wider than a meter on one of the lines. The check leans to reporting: a gap
near the pole that doesn't reach it counts too, as do polygons reaching less
far from the pole on one side than on another. The lines' crossings with each
ring are worked out exactly, where an overlay would round them to a grid, and
a hole takes what's inside it from its outline's. Polygons whose crossings
can't be worked out (a coordinate missing or infinite there, or so far around
that a meter is lost in rounding) don't count.

A polygon that outside_line skips here is dropped from the coverage test without any notice: one outside ±FAR_M (line 744), or one whose crossings can't be worked out (ring_stretches returns false). The point it would have covered is then reported as not covered, and the user is never told a polygon was left out. Checked has no notice channel today (only errors and complete), so this needs a count carried out of not_covered and reported through ToolResult::messages, one notice with a count. Please add that along with a test where a lossy input gives the notice and a clean one gives none.

Fixed. The check counts the features it leaves out at a pole (Checked::skipped), and Validate Topology warns once, naming each rule, the point layer and the polygon layer, e.g. "Must Be Covered By on 'Pole': 1 feature(s) of 'Caps'" (3d6b8d0). 42daf15 counts only polygons that could have changed the answer: those whose latitudes reach the lines about the pole, when the rest don't surround it or might not have with them. Each feature counts once across both poles. a_polygon_left_out_at_a_pole_is_counted and the engine's must_be_covered_by_says_which_polygons_it_left_out_at_a_pole cover it, in either row order, with a multi-part feature and with both poles.

Performance (low severity). add_to re-sorts and dedups the whole candidate list on every call. It runs once per point at a pole, so with many points at one pole and many polygons reaching it, the cost is O(points × k log k) on top of the matches it adds. Since found is already sorted from the extent index and self.north/self.south are sorted by construction, a linear merge of the two sorted lists would avoid the per-call sort.

Leaving this for the release quality pass. found comes from ExtentIndex::candidates_into, which already sorts and dedups on every call, so this sort is the same order of cost the search already pays; it runs only for points at a pole with polygons to add.

Code review

I reviewed the full diff (15 files, about 2,500 added lines) against AGENTS.md, the prior-review file (empty, so nothing to skip), and the surrounding code. The build and tests were not run, since I had no shell.

Bugs: none confirmed. I traced the main paths and found no panic sites in new non-test code (no unwrap, expect, panic!, or unchecked indexing), and the step, work, and piece budgets bound all loops. I did not verify the polar geometry numerically; the tests and docs pin most of it.

Security: nothing found. The change is pure geometry and doesn't touch I/O, secrets, or new dependencies.

Performance:

  • AtPoles::add_to re-sorts the candidate list on each point at a pole. Inline comment posted (low severity, confidence medium). I stated that the candidate lists are already sorted, but I did not verify the ordering of candidates_into, so treat that part as unconfirmed.

Quality: nothing posted. Several items (a format! in the kernel-density message, a long paragraph in analysis.md) match existing conventions in the crate and fall under the release quality pass.

AGENTS.md:

  • Never silent (high confidence the skip is silent; medium that it changes results): polygons dropped by outside_line (±FAR_M box, or crossings that can't be worked out) leave the coverage test without a notice, and a point they would cover is reported as uncovered. Inline comment posted. Fixing it needs a count carried out of not_covered, because Checked has no notice field.
  • network::within_counted returns an empty result silently for an invalid center. Both callers validate first, so this is low risk, but within is public and silent.

Checked and found consistent:

  • Zone.ext is lon/lat, so poles(&z.ext) is correct.
  • MSRV is 1.90, so as_chunks and is_multiple_of are fine.
  • The anchor analysis.md#geoprocessing-tools exists.
  • The docs match the code's constants (POLE_TOLERANCE, the 85.05° switch, the step budget).
  • The engine's other notices also use format!.

Already raised earlier: none (the prior-review file contained no threads).

Follow-up Comments

Minor follow-up Measure the own-part edge that crosses the 2 × tolm point.

629-637: 🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚖️ Poor tradeoff

Measure the own-part edge that crosses the 2 × tol_m point.

In PolarEnds::meets, the own-part edge whose length takes walked past 2 * tol_m is checked only at its far endpoint. Its interior is never passed to near, and the grid pass skips the whole own part. A line that curls back across its own end on that edge is reported as a dangle.

Measure the part of that edge past the 2 × tol_m point with near, and keep the earlier part of the edge excluded. The 2 × tol_m point lies inside the edge, so the code must locate it along the edge before it measures the remainder. A whole-edge near call would also measure the excluded start stretch, so it is not a substitute.

Note: this behaviour predates this PR (already present at merge base 75b52afa0364); the change keeps it reachable.

Locate that point along the edge using the same distance measure as edge_length,

Nitpick Add a fully measured polar point to the no-notice check.

6350-6352: 📐 Maintainability & Code Quality | 🔵 Trivial | ⚡ Quick win

Add a fully measured polar point to the no-notice check.

The no-notice assertion at crates/engine/src/tests.rs:6351-6352 searches Cities at lat: 89.9, radius: 10000. The Cities layer has no point near the pole. Its northernmost point is at 64.143° latitude. The change adds no polar features to Cities. The assertion therefore cannot detect a change that reports a fully measured polar point as bounded.

Add a point layer with features at a pole-adjacent latitude inside the search radius, using the same setup pattern as the Spirals layer. Then assert that a analysis.neighborhood search on that layer emits no "near a pole" notice. Keep the existing Spirals check and the Cities assertion.

Comment thread crates/analysis/src/network.rs Resolved
…pengeos#1033)

- Geodesic buffers: an edge reaching beyond 85.05° is always checked, even
when short. STRAY_PER_M2 holds for rhumb lines, not for the spirals that
straight edges are there: a 10 km point buffer at 89.9°N was 25 m off its
circle (tolerance 0.2 m), as the doc on may_stray said it shouldn't be.
- Dangles beyond 85.05°: the end's own part counts from where the walk
passes twice the tolerance, inside an edge too, not only from that edge's
far vertex. An edge winding round the pole passes back over the end.
- An edge needing more than POLAR_PIECES_MAX pieces (one winding round a
pole on the order of 180 times) stops the dangle check, reported as
incomplete, instead of being measured coarser without a word.
- Kernel Density: the note on points a system can't hold names the system,
and says "past 85.05° of latitude" only for Web Mercator.
…pole; try every turn in radius searches

Must Be Covered By left a polygon out of its check at a pole without saying
so when the polygon had a missing or infinite coordinate, or ran a million
turns around; the points there it would cover were then reported as errors.
The check now counts those polygons, and Validate Topology names each rule
and layer with the count in one warning.

A radius search's center inside a polygon's box but at a longitude a few
turns from where the polygon is written was tried only at the first turn.
It is now tried at every turn the box spans: the first four free, each
further turn charged against the layer's step budget, and a search that
runs out counts the row as bounded.

Review follow-up for opengeos#1349.
…eded (opengeos#1033)

From a second review round on the polar fixes, and CodeRabbit's on opengeos#1348.

- Dangles beyond 85.05°: the walk along an end's own edges stops at the
piece that passes twice the tolerance, at the point within it found by
length, and only those pieces count as work. A hairpin crossing its end
inside a long piece meets it, and a long edge no longer costs its whole
  length.
- A stretch needing more than POLAR_PIECES_MAX pieces is measured in that
many and the check says it's incomplete, but goes on: one hostile edge no
longer stops the check for the rest of the layer.
- Geodesic buffers: an edge with both ends beyond 85.05° is bounded as the
spiral it is about the pole (Δλ(ρΔλ + 2Δρ)/8, plus each frame's turn),
so edges far from the pole again skip the full look. The fuzz test now
tries short edges on planes to ±89.99°; over a thousand pass the bound,
and the full look agrees on each. Buffers across ±180° and round a pole
  are tested too.
- Kernel Density in Web Mercator leaves out a latitude past 85.05° before
projecting: the round trip let one a hair past it onto the raster's edge.
- Tabulate Intersection's polar test checks area_km2 against GeographicLib.
…polar radius (opengeos#1033)

- Dangles beyond 85.05°: the walk along an end's own edge is cut into at
most POLAR_PIECES_MAX pieces, as a measured stretch already is, and the
check says it's incomplete. An edge winding round a pole a hair from it
can't use up the check's work.
- A piece count that overflows (coordinates far out of range) is one
piece, said to be coarse, not POLAR_PIECES_MAX pieces that measure
  nothing better.
- When an end's earlier edges come to exactly twice the tolerance, all of
the next edge counts: its first piece was skipped.
- Geodesic buffers: the spiral bound beyond 85.05° measures distance from
the pole with the polar radius of curvature (a²/b), as the dangle check
  does, through one spiral_stray.

…he ground (opengeos#1033)

The walk along a polar end's own edge placed the point where it passes
twice the tolerance in proportion to the piece's length, but the piece's
parameter isn't: an edge reaching from beyond 85.05° far into the band is
one piece, along which the plane stretches about 11.6 times more per
meter beyond 85.05° than within it. A line from 86°N down the meridian to
60°N measured "the rest" from about 0.77 times the tolerance, so its
polar end met its own line and wasn't reported, the check still
complete. The place is now found by halving the piece on the distance
from its start, at or just past it, never before.

Validate Topology's note on incomplete rules now says a rule is also
incomplete when it measured a part coarsely.
…inds (opengeos#1033)

network::within reaches no row for a center past ±90° or missing a coordinate, or a radius missing or negative; its doc now says so, and that callers check first.
…k an overflowing edge (opengeos#1033)

From review of the polar dangle fixes:

- The halving that places twice the tolerance within a piece now stops
once the place is within a millimeter past it (about 25 halvings, not
60), and each halving counts as a unit of work, as each piece does: a
layer of many short polar lines can't run the check far past its work
  limit.
- An edge whose length overflows (coordinates far out of range) is walked
as one piece between its own vertices, and the check says it's
incomplete, as edge_from already did: interpolating to its end gave a
missing coordinate, the walk's length went missing, and the rest of the
end's own line was never measured.
…d don't let one spend a radius search (opengeos#1033)

From review of Must Be Covered By's count and the every-turn search:

- A polygon whose latitudes miss the lines about the pole plays no part
there, however far around it's written; it was counted as left out
(when it came before a whole cap), so the warning depended on row
order. Polygons left out are now counted when the rest don't surround
the pole, or might not have with them (the lines end at one wholly
outside the rest that a polygon left out reaches); otherwise they
  changed nothing.
- The count is of features, each once across both poles: it counted a
feature's parts, and took the larger pole's count, not both.
- Validate Topology's warning names the layer the polygons are in, not
the layer of points ("Must Be Covered By on 'Pole': 1 feature(s) of
'Caps'"), and says the result there may be wrong.
- A radius search tries a polygon past its first four turns only when its
steps can pay for the rest; otherwise, or when the turns are too many
to count one by one (past 2^53, where the turn stopped advancing), it
counts as holding the center, a bound, at once, taking no steps, as an
edge too long to step along does. One polygon a billion degrees long no
longer spends the search's steps, so the shapes after it are still
measured, and a center in one of its first four turns is still found
  exactly.
// The last vertex measured: the next edge starts there when they're joined.

Never silent (AGENTS.md), confidence about 35%. polar_reach drops any edge with a non-finite end here without a count, and the point branch (if c.is_finite() … else f64::INFINITY) does the same for a vertex. The shape is then measured without that part, so it can be left out of the results or reported at a larger distance, and the search's notice doesn't mention it. The test beside this code pins the skip deliberately ("a vertex repeated beside a missing coordinate is still found"), so the behaviour is intended. The gap is only the missing notice. Suggest counting the skipped coordinates alongside bounded and reporting them through warn_bounded, with a test where a line with a NaN vertex gives the notice and a clean line gives none. If the loaders already reject non-finite coordinates before this point, say so in the PR and this can be dropped.

Code review

Bugs

  • No confirmed bugs. I traced the coordinate frames (Zone.ext, Selector, AtPoles, plane_poles), the pole-tolerance logic, the spiral bound in geodesic.rs, the spherical-distance formula in least_distance_to_box, the dangle grid windows, and the area integral across ±85.05°. All were consistent.

Security

  • None found. The new loops are bounded by REACH_STEPS_TOTAL, MAX_WORK, POLAR_PIECES_MAX and READS_A_WORK.

Performance

  • AtPoles::add_to re-sorts on every call. This is the earlier thread on tools.rs around line 4279, still present, so I left it alone.
  • polar_reach copies each polar polygon with g.map_coords(&lonlat_to_plane) for every shape in every search. The copy is linear and not charged to the step budget. Low severity, about 30% confidence.

Quality

  • network.rs:494: Steps has a field bound and a method bound(). Renaming the method (for example note_bound) would read better. Nit.
  • topology.rs:488: edge_from takes eight arguments behind #[allow(clippy::too_many_arguments)]. A small struct for the frame and tolerance would be clearer. Nit.
  • docs/user-guide/analysis.md:257: the new sentence about the KDE point limit is merged into an existing paragraph, which leaves an over-long line. Nit.
  • topology.rs is now about 1,500 lines. The polar-end code (PolarEnds, edge_from, walk_edge, surrounds_pole) could move to its own module. Maintainability, low.

AGENTS.md

  • Inline comment on network.rs:643 (about 35% confidence): polar_reach silently skips edges and vertices with non-finite coordinates. The skip is pinned by a test, so it looks intended, but nothing is reported. See the inline comment.
  • Checked and clean: no unwrap, expect, panic! or todo! in non-test code (the flagged ones are all in tests). No new dependencies, so no deny.toml or notices change is needed. Wasm-safe: LazyLock and no std::time. Engine messages use plain format!, which matches the existing engine code. The new notices go through Session::warn with one notice per kind and a count, and the tests cover notice and no-notice cases.

Earlier review threads

  • I left 3 earlier concerns alone:
    • topology.rs:899 (silent polygon drop): the code now carries Checked::skipped and the engine warns with a count, so the concern is answered.
    • tools.rs:4279 (add_to re-sort): still present, code unchanged.
    • network.rs:577 (four longitude turns): outdated. The turn loop now covers every turn within the step budget.

On the review's note that network::within_counted returns nothing for an invalid center: that's on purpose. An invalid center (a latitude past ±90°, a missing coordinate) or radius (missing, negative) reaches nothing rather than being clamped somewhere it wasn't asked for. Both tools check first: Select By Radius refuses one, and analysis.neighborhood, which passed an invalid center through unchecked, now refuses it too. A library caller gets an empty result, as for a search that finds nothing; the doc on within now says so (bfee5d3).

Skip shapes with coordinates beyond ±90° before the polar search, and report the skipped count.

Shapes that reach polar_reach are not checked for latitude. A vertex at 100° passes the finiteness-only test in the point and edge paths. least_distance_to_box and Aeqd::forward clamp it to the North Pole, so the shape can be reported at the pole distance when the search radius reaches the pole. The polygon containment path also maps that vertex to a finite plane position, so it can report containment at distance 0.

Test the shape's extent in within_counted, in the branch that calls polar_reach. A shape with e.min_y < -90.0 || e.max_y > 90.0 can be skipped there. This check runs per shape, so it covers the point, edge, and polygon paths together.

Count the skipped shapes. Report the count with a notice, as ## Never silent in AGENTS.md requires for dropped data. The existing bounded count describes distances that are bounds, not skipped shapes, so use a separate notice.

The center check in within_counted already uses ±90°. radius_coord_supported uses ±85.05°, so it is not the model for this check.

Skip Select By Location selectors with latitudes beyond ±90°.

reaches_poles treats any extent whose north edge is at or beyond 90° as reaching the North Pole, with no upper bound (crates/analysis/src/convert.rs:21-23). A selector at 100° therefore sets its pole flag. AtPoles::any then selects every target that reaches that pole, including valid targets at 90°, before any intersection test. Zero distance skips the buffer, so this applies without a buffer. The GeoJSON reader accepts such coordinates, because its coordinate check only tests for finite values.

Other analysis inputs reject latitudes beyond ±90°. Selectors should match that behavior. Skip them and report the count, as the existing "lack geometry" notice does.

Review comment at @crates/analysis/src/tools.rs around lines 4239 - 4241:
Update the Select By Location selector filtering to exclude geometries with any
coordinate latitude outside ±90° before pole matching or intersection checks.
Track geometry-bearing selectors separately from the chosen rows so the notice
reports out-of-range selectors and missing geometries with accurate,
non-overlapping counts.

Match polar ends whose longitudes differ by two or more turns.

Reach::shifts searches only the original longitude and one turn each way. A line end at lon 0° and another at lon 720° at the same latitude are the same pole point, but they are not compared. Both ends are then reported as dangles. GeoJSON import accepts lon 720° unchanged. Compare the other end's longitude offset, or normalize longitudes before the polar check.

Review comment at @crates/analysis/src/topology.rs around lines 431 - 434:
Update Reach::shifts so its polar-end matching handles longitudes differing by
two or more turns, not only the original longitude and one turn in either
direction. Compare the other end’s longitude offset or normalize longitudes
before the polar check, preserving the existing finite-longitude behavior.

Add skipped pole checks to incomplete.

When a Must Be Covered By check leaves out a pole polygon, topology_validate can return errors: 0 with incomplete: []. A caller that reads only the returned JSON never sees the pole warning. Add the rule to incomplete when skipped is nonzero.

Suggested fix
-        if !found.complete {
+        if !found.complete || found.skipped > 0 {
             incomplete.push(rule.label().to_string());

Review comment at @crates/engine/src/cmd/design.rs around lines 1278 - 1282:
Update the completeness handling in topology_validate so a rule with skipped
pole checks is added to incomplete, even when the check otherwise reports
complete. Preserve the existing handling for incomplete checks and use the
skipped count associated with the rule.
