fix(ui): a double-click is counted at slow frame rates, so a layer's opens Symbology (#1321) - #1322
Double-clicking a layer in the Layers pane didn't open Symbology when frames were slow (#1321). egui times a click by the frame it arrives in and counts a double-click only within max_double_click_delay (0.3 s by default). With CPU rendering of a large map at about 3 frames a second, the two clicks of an ordinary double-click land in frames too far apart, so the second was taken as a single click. The pane's handler was right; the delay was too short for the frame rate.
double_click_delay(dt) (crates/ui-egui/src/lib.rs): the longest gap between the two clicks, for frames dt seconds long. It is 0.3 s plus two frames, since a click can be timed up to a frame late. It is at least 0.5 s, the Windows default, and at most 1.2 s, so two separate clicks still read as two.
RustGisApp::ui sets egui's input_options.max_double_click_delay from it when the frame ends. egui reads the delay when the next frame begins, before that frame's logic, so setting it in logic would come a frame late. dt is the larger of the frame's own work so far (timed from the start of logic, so a map drawn on the CPU counts) and stable_dt (the last frame's real length, painting included, when that frame asked for an immediate repaint; egui's prediction otherwise).
What changes for users:
It applies to every double-click in the app, not only this one: Layers, Catalog, the connection tree, and the map, where a double-click zooms in and finishes a sketch or a polygon selection. Two single clicks on the same spot (within egui's 6 points) inside the window now count as a double-click, so on the map they zoom.
The floor applies at every frame rate and on every platform: at 60 fps the delay is 0.5 s instead of egui's 0.3 s on macOS and Linux too. At 3 fps it is about 0.96 s. egui doesn't read the system's double-click setting, before or after this change.
Known limit: a frame slow only in painting is seen through stable_dt alone, a frame late, and not at all when nothing asked for an immediate repaint. The delay then stays where it was, at the 0.5 s floor or above. Time spent in ui, where a map drawn on the CPU is made, is always timed.
Testing
panes::tests::double_clicking_a_layer_opens_symbology_at_a_slow_frame_rate (ui-egui): with the right side closed and the harness at 4 frames a second, a double-click on Rivers makes it active and opens Symbology. The two releases are three frames, 0.75 s, apart. It fails without the delay (the second click is single) and passes with it. It also checks the delay at 60 fps (0.5 s), at 3 fps (0.96 s) and for very slow frames (1.2 s).
panes::tests::a_double_click_counts_across_the_first_slow_frame: fast frames, then a frame of 0.3 s of work holding the first click, then the second click 0.7 s later. It fails when the delay is set in logic, and passes when it is set at the end of ui.
mapview::tests::map_clicks_past_the_double_click_ceiling_do_not_zoom: at 0.75 s a frame, two clicks 1.5 s apart don't zoom the map, and a click 1.0 s after those does. It passes without this round's move too: it guards the ceiling, and fails if the ceiling is removed.
On Windows: cargo fmt --all --check; cargo clippy -p rustgis-ui-egui --all-targets -- -D warnings; cargo test -p rustgis-ui-egui (with RUSTGIS_LANGUAGE=en on a Portuguese system). The full cargo xtask ci and the wasm check were not run on this head; the new code has no platform branches and times with web_time.
The reporter's case, before the change: in the desktop app at about 3 fps, a very fast double-click opened Symbology and an ordinary one didn't, and with Symbology already open (a smaller, faster map) an ordinary one did. That matches the cause above. The change itself is tested in the UI harness only, not yet in a real window.
egui times a click by the frame it arrives in and counts a double-click only within 0.3 s,
so at about 3 frames a second (CPU rendering of a large map) a layer's double-click didn't
open Symbology. The delay now follows the frame time: 0.3 s plus two frames, at least 0.5 s
(the Windows default) and at most 1.2 s.

Walkthrough
The UI now sets egui’s maximum double-click delay from frame timing. It uses the greater of elapsed frame work and stable_dt, then clamps the calculated delay to 0.5–1.2 seconds. Regression tests cover layer and map double-click behavior at slower frame rates.

Summary
Calculate and apply the delay crates/ui-egui/src/lib.rs
The UI records the start of the first egui pass and uses the greater of elapsed frame work and stable_dt to calculate the delay. The delay is 0.3 + 2 × dt seconds, clamped to 0.5–1.2 seconds.
The wider double-click window intentionally applies to sketch completion as well as layer interactions. No additional confirmed issue blocks merging after normal checks.

Explanation
Issue #1321 requires ordinary double-clicks to open Symbology at low frame rates. RustGisApp::logic records the frame start, and RustGisApp::ui sets max_double_click_delay from the larger of frame work and stable_dt. double_click_delay adds two frame durations and clamps the result to 0.5–1.2 seconds. The tests cover slow layer clicks, a first slow frame, and the delay ceiling. The implementation also covers the other app double-clicks identified by #1321.

Scope: 2 files, 41 added lines. double_click_delay and its one call site in logic (crates/ui-egui/src/lib.rs), plus a new regression test in crates/ui-egui/src/panes.rs. There are no earlier review threads on this PR, so no concerns were skipped as already raised.
Bugs
None found. The clamp arithmetic matches the tests (60 fps gives 0.5 s, 3 fps gives 0.96 s, and the 1.2 s ceiling holds). The f32 to f64 conversion and the private crate::double_click_delay access from the test module both compile in principle. I could not build or run the tests with the tools available.
Security
None found.
Performance
Nothing material. logic now writes options_mut every frame. That is cheap, and I have not confirmed whether egui treats the write as a change. Confidence: low.
Quality
Behaviour scope (inline comment posted on lib.rs:3724). The change also affects the map view's double-click zoom and its sketch and polygon-selection finishing, which the PR description does not mention. Confidence: medium.
The window follows the previous frame's stable_dt. If the app idles between input events, the first double-click after a pause could get the 1.2 s window. The effect only makes double-clicks easier to register, so it is harmless. Confidence: low.
AGENTS.md
No violations found. There are no unwrap, expect or panic calls in non-test code, and no std::time use. The change is in ui-egui (L6), so the layering rule holds. It adds no user-visible strings, so the tl! rule does not apply. The test follows the existing with_step_dt pattern in the crate.
Change size
Compared: the whole PR against main (merge base ccf06b7 to PR head 0c64933).
None confirmed. The new double_click_delay handles NaN, zero and very large dt without panicking, and the clamp keeps the result within [0.5, 1.2]. The f64 conversion and the test's float comparisons look right.
Security
None found. The change touches no input, I/O or secrets.
Performance
None found. The change writes one option per frame, which is negligible.
Quality
Low-confidence: the test named double_clicking_a_layer_opens_symbology_at_a_slow_frame_rate also asserts the double_click_delay formula values. Splitting those into their own unit test would make failures easier to read. Left for the release quality pass.
AGENTS.md
No violations found. There are no unwraps, panics or unsafe blocks, no new dependencies, no user-visible strings, and nothing below L6 depends on egui.
The change is a timing fix with no visible UI change, so it doesn't need a screenshot.
Design and test (inline)
crates/ui-egui/src/lib.rs:4206: the 0.5 s floor changes double-click timing for every user at 60 fps, including on platforms where the bug doesn't occur. Confidence: medium-low.
crates/ui-egui/src/panes.rs:6782: the test may pass without the fix if the gap between the two clicks is about 0.25 s, which is already under the default 0.3 s. Confidence: low-medium. I did not run it.
Already raised, left alone
One earlier concern is unanswered and still applies: the delay change also affects the map view's double-click zoom and sketch or selection finishing. The code is unchanged, so I did not repost it.
I could not run the tests or the app here (no Bash, no network). Both inline findings are based on reading the code.
Change size
Compared with main (merge base f822ef0 to PR head 443a670), the whole PR.
Reviewed the 2-file diff (crates/ui-egui/src/lib.rs, crates/ui-egui/src/panes.rs) against the base branch, the AGENTS.md rules, and the existing tests that depend on double-click timing. I found no new bugs or security issues. The change follows the repo rules: no unwrap, expect or unsafe, no new strings, no new dependencies, and no std::time use.
Bugs
None new. The clamp (0.3 + 2.0 * dt).clamp(0.5, 1.2) and the expected values in the test (0.5 at 60 fps, about 0.96 at 3 fps, 1.2 at very slow frames) check out by hand. Confidence: high.
Security
None.
Performance
None. options_mut runs once per frame and does a single write.
Quality
Test margin (crates/ui-egui/tests/measurement_units.rs:346): the test separates two clicks with 32 harness steps. At the default kittest step of about 1/60 s, that is about 0.533 s, only 33 ms above the new 0.5 s floor. The test still passes, but a future change to the floor or the step size could make it flaky. Confidence: medium-low. I did not run the tests. Not posted inline because the line is outside the diff.
AGENTS.md
No violations found. The change is a click-timing change with no visible layout change, so the screenshot rule does not seem to apply. The PR's Windows test notes cover the fmt, clippy, test and wasm checks.
Earlier concerns
3 earlier review threads are still open with no reply from the author or an owner, and the code they point at is unchanged. I left them alone: the widened double-click window for the map and other views (lib.rs:3865), the 0.5 s floor as a design question (lib.rs:4206), and whether the panes test fails without the fix (panes.rs:6782).

…the second click (opengeos#1321)
egui reads max_double_click_delay in begin_pass, before the frame's logic runs, so a delay set in
logic came a frame late: when the frame holding the first click was the first slow one, the second
click was timed against the 0.5 s of the fast frames before it. The delay is now set at the end of
ui, from that frame's work so far and the last frame's length (stable_dt).
Tests: a double-click across the first slow frame opens Symbology; on the map, two clicks past the
1.2 s ceiling stay two and don't zoom.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
No definite bugs found in the changed lines. logic sets frame_start on pass 0, ui consumes it at its end, and the delay is set before the next frame's input is classified. The early return for font warm-up (lib.rs ~4131) leaves frame_start set, which is harmless because the next logic overwrites it.
Possible gap: stable_dt may be shorter than the frame that just ended, so a slow frame spent painting may not raise the delay. Low-medium confidence, since egui's definition is outside this checkout. Posted inline at crates/ui-egui/src/lib.rs:4199.
Security
None found. No new input parsing, I/O or external data.
Performance
None significant. One options_mut write and one Instant per frame.
Quality
Nit (release quality pass): the double_click_delay doc says a 0.3 s gap "can be measured as up to two frames more". Each click's timing error is at most one frame, so the gap error is about one frame. The formula is conservative, so the behaviour is fine, but the wording overstates it. Confidence: medium.
Nit (release quality pass): double_clicking_a_layer_opens_symbology_at_a_slow_frame_rate passes with a margin of about 0.05 s (0.75 s gap against a 0.8 s delay at 4 fps). It relies on kittest queuing one frame per click event. Confidence: medium.
AGENTS.md
Compliant as far as I can see. No unwrap, expect or unsafe in non-test code. web_time is used. std::thread::sleep appears only in tests. No new user-visible strings. Each new behaviour has a test, and both the slow-frame and fast-frame cases are covered.
Already raised (left alone, 4 concerns)
The 0.5 s floor changing double-click timing at 60 fps on every platform, and the 0.3 s lower bound. The author answered and the PR text now states the change.
The test passing without the fix, which the author answered with a revert run.
The map's double-click zoom and selection-finish behaviour, which the author fixed and documented.
The delay being set in logic too late, which the author fixed by moving it to the end of ui.
