fix(analysis): Buffer says how many features had no geometry; review follow-ups to #1248 - #1251
Follow-ups to the last github-actions review of #1248, which merged before they were pushed.
Never silent: Buffer left features without geometry out of its output without saying so (pre-existing). It now adds a notice: "N of M features have no geometry, so they have no buffer".
Shared radius:may_stray uses rustgis_geom::EARTH_RADIUS_M, the radius the distances are measured with, instead of its own copy.
Named allowance: the bound's allowance for the ellipsoid and the equator is a named constant, FLAT_ALLOWANCE.
Wider test grid: the bound's test also covers 86° and 88°, beyond Web Mercator's 85.05°.
Comment at resume_unwind: it raises the worker's panic again, as a serial run would, for analysis::run to catch.
No buffer geometry changes.
Testing
New test buffers_made_on_threads_keep_their_features_and_say_which_had_no_geometry. It runs Buffer on 300 points, enough for several threads, and checks that:
each output keeps its own attributes and the buffer made alone;
Dissolve All gives one feature;
the notice appears with a geometry-less feature and not without one.
…follow-ups
- Buffer left features without geometry out without saying so. It now
says how many of the features it was given had none, and a test with
enough features for several threads checks that each output keeps its
own attributes and buffer, with and without dissolving.
- `may_stray` uses `rustgis_geom::EARTH_RADIUS_M`, the radius distances
are measured with, and names its allowance for the ellipsoid and the
equator (`FLAT_ALLOWANCE`).
- The bound's test also covers 86° and 88°, past Web Mercator's limit.
- A note at `resume_unwind`: it raises the worker's panic again, as a
serial run would, for `analysis::run` to catch.
The geodesic code now uses a shared Earth radius constant and a named flat allowance, with expanded high-latitude test coverage. The buffer operation now reports selected features without geometry and features whose buffers are empty.

Summary
Screening constants and latitude coverage crates/analysis/src/geodesic.rs
The code uses the shared Earth radius constant and a named flat allowance. Comments describe the allowance and worker-panic handling. The edge-screening test includes latitudes through 88° in both hemispheres.
Buffer Missing-Geometry Reporting
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Buffer selection and result messages crates/analysis/src/tools.rs
The buffer operation counts selected features without geometry and features whose buffers are empty. It adds a message for each nonzero count. Tests check missing-geometry reporting with and without dissolve, valid feature attributes and buffers, and empty output for negative-distance point buffers.
opengeos/RustGIS#1033: The changes expand high-latitude geodesic screening tests, which concerns the issue’s reported polar-coordinate behavior for Buffer. The changes do not address the other tools mentioned in the issue.

Scope: 2 files, crates/analysis/src/tools.rs and crates/analysis/src/geodesic.rs. No prior review threads existed, so nothing was skipped as already raised. I could not run cargo or the tests (no shell in this session), so everything below is from reading the code.
Bugs
Buffer still drops features silently in the same loop (inline comment posted at tools.rs:1154). The notice covers only features with no geometry. geodesic_buffer also returns None when the buffer is empty. A negative distance on points is the common case: every point vanishes and the only message is Buffer: 0 features. Confidence: high that the path exists; medium-high that geo returns an empty buffer for negative point distances, since I could not run it.
Security
None found. The change adds no input handling.
Performance
None found. The extra picked vector holds references only.
Quality
Test name overstates coverage.buffers_made_on_threads_… only runs threaded when available_parallelism() is above 1. On a single-CPU runner geodesic_buffers runs serially, so the test passes without exercising threads. Low confidence (about 0.4) that this matters in CI. Either rename it or drive buffers_on with an explicit thread count.
Uneven comment rewrap at geodesic.rs:474-477. Line 475 is about 130 characters, against about 100 for its neighbours. Suggested reflow:
// Wherever `may_stray` lets an edge pass without looking, looking agrees: planes from 88°S
// to 88°N (past Web Mercator's 85.05° too), edges of 100 m to 1,000 km in eight directions,
// up to 5,000 km from the centre to the side or at 45°, at the tolerances of buffers from
// 100 m to 5,000 km (the largest Buffer makes).
Dissolve path not asserted for the notice. The new test checks the notice only for the plain Buffer run. The dissolve: "All" run with a geometry-less feature gets no assertion that the notice still appears.
AGENTS.md
Never crash: no new unwrap, expect or panic. picked.len() - geoms.len() cannot underflow. The resume_unwind comment is accurate.
Never silent: the geometry-less notice is present and tested both ways, which meets the rule for that case. The gap is the finding above.
Translation: the analysis crate uses no tl! or i18n anywhere, and its tool messages all use format!, so the new notice matches the crate's convention.
Layering and wasm: the change is inside analysis, which already depends on rustgis_geom. EARTH_RADIUS_M is 6_371_008.8, the same value as the removed local copy, so the may_stray bound is unchanged.
Not checked: the rows() helper silently drops out-of-range selection indices. That is pre-existing and not in this diff, so I left it alone.
Change size
Compared with the base branch: merge base 7903741 to PR head fd92828.
Cover the selected-row count in the buffer notice test.
The test calls buffer with no selection, so rows returns all 301 features. A count over all features gives the same 1 of 301 features have no geometry message as a count over the selected rows. A regression to a whole-dataset count would still pass this test.
The test input cannot express a selection. Its selection method returns an empty slice for every layer. Use a fixture that returns row selections, such as the one used by the existing buffer-selection tests, for these two cases:
A selection that excludes the geometry-less row. The buffer result has no notice, so messages.len() is 1.
A selection that includes the geometry-less row. The notice reports one missing geometry and the total number of selected features.

Review comment at @crates/analysis/src/tools.rs around lines 4869 - 4871:
Update the buffer notice test around `crate::run` to use a fixture that supports
row selections, as in the existing buffer-selection tests. Cover a selection
excluding the geometry-less row, where only the original message remains, and a
selection including it, where the notice reports one missing geometry out of the
selected feature count.
Assert the missing-geometry notice in the Dissolve All run.
4878-4879: Trivial · Maintainability & Code Quality · Low value
Assert the missing-geometry notice in the Dissolve All run.
The notice is added after both the dissolve and non-dissolve branches, using the same without count. The test asserts it only for the non-dissolve run. A later change that omits the notice only when dissolving would not fail this test.

Review comment at @crates/analysis/src/tools.rs around lines 4878 - 4879:
Extend the dissolve-all buffer test around the `crate::run` call to assert that
its returned `messages` includes the missing-geometry notice. Reuse the run
result for the notice assertion and the existing `layer` conversion and
feature-count assertion.

…distance
A buffer can come out empty: points at a negative distance, polygons
that shrink away, features with no finite coordinates. Buffer left those
out without a word. It now says how many, next to the notice for
features without geometry, and the test checks both notices with and
without dissolving.
I found no correctness bugs or security issues. The Buffer change keeps the existing behaviour and adds the notices the repo asks for. The rest is wording and test precision. Everything below is a nit I'd fix before merge.
I checked the buffer restructure, the EARTH_RADIUS_M constant (identical value, so may_stray is numerically unchanged), the FLAT_ALLOWANCE extraction (0.1, same as before), the resume_unwind comment, the widened latitude test grid, and the new test's helpers and imports. I did not compile or run the tests (no shell in this review).
Bugs: none found.
Security: none found.
Performance: none found. The extra work is a counter and a Vec of references already built. The wider test grid adds about 40% more plane checks, which is acceptable.
Quality (nits, posted inline):
tools.rs:1181: "have nothing left" is inaccurate for features with no finite coordinates, which never had anything to leave. Medium confidence.
tools.rs:1178: "1 of 301 features have no geometry" disagrees in number when the count is 1. High confidence.
geodesic.rs:62: "the one distances are measured with" overstates it. densify and on_wgs84 use the WGS 84 ellipsoid, and only the sphere bound uses EARTH_RADIUS_M. Medium confidence.
AGENTS.md:
geodesic.rs:135: the comment cites AGENTS.md, which source comments in this crate don't otherwise do. Medium confidence, nit.
The never-crash rule and the "never silent" rule are met: both notice kinds are pushed through ToolResult::messages with counts, and the clean case gets no notice.
Tests (posted inline):
tools.rs:4880: the lossy case checks only messages.get(1), so an extra third notice would pass. Asserting messages.len() == 2 closes the gap. High confidence.
Prior reviews: one thread (negative-distance points dropped silently) is resolved and outdated, and the author replied in d2929f8, which adds the "nothing left" notice. I left it alone. Nothing else was raised before.
Change size
Compared with the base branch: the whole PR against main (merge base 7903741 to PR head d2929f8).
Assert the empty-buffer notice for a negative-distance Dissolve All run.
The new test checks the negative-distance notice only with dissolve set to None. The empty-buffer count is taken before the dissolve branch, so the current code reports the notice for both modes. A change that counts empty buffers only in the non-dissolve branch would still pass this test. Add a Dissolve All case with the same assertion.

Review comment at @crates/analysis/src/tools.rs around lines 4891 - 4896:
Add a negative-distance Dissolve All case to the test that invokes
`crate::run("buffer", ...)`, asserting the same empty-buffer notice and that the
output features are empty. Keep the existing non-dissolve case.
Add a Buffer test where both notices appear together.
Add a Buffer test where both notices appear together.
The new test checks the geometry-less notice and the empty-buffer notice only in separate runs. A regression that merges them into one else if would pass the test. Add a run with a geometry-less feature and a negative distance, and assert both notices.
Suggested test addition

Review comment at @crates/analysis/src/tools.rs around lines 4887 - 4894:
Extend the buffer test using crate::run with a combined case that passes the
geometry-less-feature input and a negative distance. Assert that the result
includes both the missing-geometry notice and the empty-buffer notice,
preserving separate assertions so the test catches either notice being
suppressed.
