Problem
Core kills the plugin script when RUN_TIMEOUT is reached, but not its children. A scan stuck on a busy or wedged radio left an orphaned sudo iw dev <iface> scan spinning at ~70% CPU until something killed it. The plugin used the same timeout as core, so core always won and the plugin's own timeout handling never ran.

Fix

  • iw now runs under sudo timeout -s KILL <RUN_TIMEOUT - 15s>, with the margin shrinking to half of a short RUN_TIMEOUT, so it's bounded even if the script itself is killed.
  • The plugin logs the timeout before core steps in. It treats exit 124, 137 and -9 as a timeout: some coreutils builds re-raise KILL on themselves, so subprocess sees -9.
  • Works with the Docker image's sudo shim (busybox timeout) and with real sudo.

Testing

  • 7 new scan() tests in test/plugins/test_wificanary.py (63 pass).
  • Docker image: the old code leaves 1 orphaned iw after a forced stuck scan, the fix leaves 0.
  • Bare-metal Pi Zero W, one night each:
    • without the fix, 15 stuck scans that an external watchdog had to kill;
    • with it, 20 stuck scans cut by the plugin at 45s, 0 orphans, 0 watchdog kills, and no missed cycles.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Wi-Fi scans now stop within a bounded time, reducing the chance of a scan hanging.
    • Timed-out scans are forcibly stopped, and timed-out or failed scans return no access points instead of disrupting the scan flow.
    • Successful scans continue to report detected access points.
    • Short scan time limits are handled safely, while scan failures are logged and do not prevent the rest of the scan flow.

Core kills the plugin script when RUN_TIMEOUT is reached, but not its
children. A scan stuck on a busy or wedged radio (seen on a Pi Zero W
right after boot) left an orphaned `sudo iw dev wlan0 scan` spinning at
~70% CPU for as long as nobody killed it, slowing the whole host down.

The scan used the same timeout as core (RUN_TIMEOUT), so core always won
and the plugin's own TimeoutExpired handling never ran. Now `iw` runs
under `timeout -s KILL` inside sudo, RUN_TIMEOUT - 15s (min 10s), so it is
bounded even if the script itself gets killed, and the plugin logs the
timeout before core steps in. Works with the Docker image's sudo shim
(busybox timeout) and with real sudo (coreutils timeout).

Walkthrough

The Wi-Fi scan now runs iw through sudo timeout -s KILL, using a timeout derived from run_timeout. It returns no access points when the scan times out or fails. Tests cover timeout limits, failure handling, and successful output parsing.

Changes: Wi-Fi scan timeout handling

Layer / File(s) Summary
Bound scan execution and verify outcomes
server/plugins/wificanary/script.py, test/plugins/test_wificanary.py
scan subtracts a margin of up to 15 seconds, capped at half of run_timeout, and runs iw through sudo timeout -s KILL. The subprocess timeout adds up to five seconds. Timeout exceptions and exit codes 124, 137, and -9 return an empty list. Tests cover timeout values, scan failures, and successful parsing.

Add docstrings to the new test functions.

_completed() and the new test_scan_* functions have no docstrings. Add a succinct description of each function’s current behavior. As per coding guidelines, “Every Python function/method gets a succinct docstring describing its current use and behavior.”

The 10s floor gave `iw` the whole deadline when RUN_TIMEOUT is 10s, so a
stuck scan couldn't be logged before core killed the script. The margin
is now min(15s, RUN_TIMEOUT // 2) and the subprocess guard stays within
it, so both end before core's limit. Also adds docstrings to the new
scan() tests.
