A boxed 28 | 2**64 answered 28, where CRuby answers 18446744073709551644.

Background

sp_poly_band, sp_poly_bor and sp_poly_bxor are the runtime's &, | and ^ on boxed values. The generated code calls them in these places:

  • a fold by a Symbol (reduce(:|), inject(:^), and a Symbol known only at run time)
  • an element's OP= on a poly Array, a poly Hash value, or a receiver of an unknown kind (a[0] |= big)

For an Integer receiver, the three read both sides as int64. A Bignum on either side so lost its high limbs:

big = 2**64
pa = [28, big, "x"]
pa.pop
p pa.reduce(:|)   # 28, CRuby 18446744073709551644
a = [28, "s"]
a[0] |= big
p a[0]            # 28, CRuby 18446744073709551644

sp_poly_bitop, the boxed a | b that the emitters use, already keeps the width.

Fix

When both sides are Integers and one is a Bignum, the three now call sp_poly_bitop. A new helper, sp_poly_bitop_wide, tells that case. The other cases do not change: two machine words, a nil or boolean receiver, two Arrays, and an operand that is not an Integer (big | 1.5 still raises the same TypeError).

The change goes in the existing functions, not in a new one. The emitters and two runtime functions (sp_poly_binop_sym, sp_poly_inject_sym) call them. A new function would need a change at each of these call sites, and the old functions would keep the wrong answer.

test/poly_bitop_bignum_width.rb covers each call site. It gives the CRuby answers under raise and promote. Before the fix, 8 of its 11 lines differed.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes

    • Bitwise AND, OR, and XOR now preserve correct results when operations involve very large integers, including in reductions and compound assignments.
    • Operations with a non-integer operand continue to report a coercion error.
  • Tests

    • Added coverage for large-integer bitwise operations across arrays, hashes, reductions, and dynamically selected operators.

A boxed `28 | 2**64` answered 28, where CRuby answers 18446744073709551644.

## Background

sp_poly_band, sp_poly_bor and sp_poly_bxor are the runtime's `&`, `|` and
`^` on boxed values. The generated code calls them in these places:

- a fold by a Symbol (`reduce(:|)`, `inject(:^)`, and a Symbol known only
  at run time)
- an element's OP= on a poly Array, a poly Hash value, or a receiver of an
  unknown kind (`a[0] |= big`)

For an Integer receiver, the three read both sides as int64. A Bignum on
either side so lost its high limbs:

```ruby
big = 2**64
pa = [28, big, "x"]
pa.pop
p pa.reduce(:|)   # 28, CRuby 18446744073709551644
a = [28, "s"]
a[0] |= big
p a[0]            # 28, CRuby 18446744073709551644
```

sp_poly_bitop, the boxed `a | b` that the emitters use, already keeps the
width.

## Fix

When both sides are Integers and one is a Bignum, the three now call
sp_poly_bitop. A new helper, sp_poly_bitop_wide, tells that case. The
other cases do not change: two machine words, a nil or boolean receiver,
two Arrays, and an operand that is not an Integer (`big | 1.5` still
raises the same TypeError).

The change goes in the existing functions, not in a new one. The
emitters and two runtime functions (sp_poly_binop_sym, sp_poly_inject_sym)
call them. A new function would need a change at each of these call
sites, and the old functions would keep the wrong answer.

test/poly_bitop_bignum_width.rb covers each call site. It gives the CRuby
answers under raise and promote. Before the fix, 8 of its 11 lines
differed.

Walkthrough

The runtime now dispatches Integer-tagged bitwise operations involving Bignums through the wide bit-operation path. The regression test covers reductions, compound assignments, machine-sized operands, and a non-Integer coercion error.
