The block-forwarding checks read a method's calls off the calls-by-scope chain - #10171
The block-forwarding checks read a method's calls off the calls-by-scope chain.
What happened
mark_proc_captures decides which enclosing locals a block needs heap cells for. A plain block handed to a method that forwards it on -- to a poly receiver, to a constructor lowered on a cycle, or to a method that keeps a real &block -- escapes into a proc, so for each such block it asks the method whether it forwards (a_scope_forwards_block_to_poly, _lowered, _keeper). Each of the three asks walked every node of the program to find the calls in that one method's scope: 2.3 million nodes per ask on a Rails application.
In a sample inside the procs phase (an_procs, 35 to 42 s of the analysis) those walks were half of the phase.
The fix
The three walks take the scope's calls off the calls-by-scope chain (comp_scall_first/comp_scall_next), which lists a scope's call nodes in node order. The scope and call-node checks stay as they were, so the walk visits the same calls in the same order and answers the same.
Measurements
Rails application (--timing, same machine, other compiles running alongside):
master
this branch
an_procs
19.8 s
14.4 s
The application stops on the same deferred refusals, and its refusal output is identical line for line to master's. The Active Support sample's C is byte-identical to plain master's. 335 related corpus tests pass locally; the gate check passes.
Method-call analysis now searches within the relevant scope rather than scanning all nodes, improving efficiency while retaining existing scope and call checks. This may reduce the time needed to analyze methods, especially in larger codebases. No changes to available functionality or public interfaces are included in this update.
…ope chain
mark_proc_captures asks, for each block handed to a method, whether the
method forwards its block on to a poly receiver, a lowered constructor or
a method that keeps it (a_scope_forwards_block_to_poly, _lowered,
_keeper). Each ask walked every node of the program for the calls in that
one method's scope: 2.3 million per ask on a Rails application, half of a
sample inside the post-fixpoint phase.
The three walks take the scope's calls off the calls-by-scope chain
(comp_scall_first), in node order, with the scope and call-node checks kept
as they were.

Explanation
The title states that the block-forwarding checks read a method's calls from the calls-by-scope chain. The raw summary and PR objectives confirm this is the main change: three checks (a_scope_forwards_block_to_poly, _lowered, _keeper) in src/analyze.c now iterate the calls-by-scope chain instead of scanning every program node. The title is specific and accurate, and it stays within the 11-word, single-sentence style the check asks for. It does not mention the performance motivation, but that is an expected omission.

Invalidate the call chain when an existing call changes scope.
rehome_block_body changes the scope of existing nodes, including CallNode entries, without changing c->nt->version. The chain can be built earlier by an_local_lent during infer_string_params, before the later rehoming passes run. The block-forwarding checks can then use stale scope membership and miss a moved call.
Invalidate the chain when an existing node's scope changes, or add a scope-assignment generation to the chain cache.
