Symptom

h = { a: 1, b: 2 }
e = h.transform_values   # CRuby: an Enumerator
p e.class

CRuby prints Enumerator. Spinel compiled the program, and it raised undefined method 'transform_values' for an instance of Hash (NoMethodError) at run time, with no refusal.

Cause

emit_unresolved_call is where a call no emitter took ends up. Its gate raises NoMethodError, as CRuby would for a method that does not exist. A call on a value typed as a builtin's instance, of a method that class has in CRuby, is no such call: the compiler only has no route for it.

Fix

unresolved_builtin_refusal refuses such a call at compile time, naming the class and the method. This applies when the receiver's type is an Array, a Hash, a String, an Integer, a Float, a Symbol or a Range, and CRuby's own table (builtin_arity.inc) gives that class the method. Under --defer-refusals, it raises NotImplementedError where it runs.

Only a call the program wrote is refused (an_written_call: a call whose id is below the table's size when the analysis began). An arm a rewrite builds is guarded by a test that may never pass, and keeps its NoMethodError. Examples of such arms:

  • the class's own arm of desugar_builtin_enum_calls;
  • the arities and block forms of desugar_builtin_splat_forward;
  • desugar_unpack_block's block test.

Without that rule, three tests that pass on master were refused at such arms: builtin_splat_forward.rb, splat_forwarded_block_aref.rb and string_unpack_block.rb.

docs/limitations.md has a row for the refusal.

Tests

  • test/reject/unresolved_builtin_method.rb (new): the blockless Hash#transform_values above. It compiles on master, and is refused with this change. tools/refusals.sh --update adds its six lines to test/collect/refusals.expected.
  • test/reject/unresolved_builtin_method_sym_block.rb (new, second commit): none_yet.drop_while(&:label), on the answer of a method that returns a local assigned only []. It compiles on master and raises NoMethodError, and is refused with this change. It adds six more lines to refusals.expected.
  • REFUSALS_JOBS=4 tools/refusals.sh --corpus (test/, benchmark/, packages/*/test/, both overflow modes) adds no refusal. It differs from test/collect/refusals-corpus.expected only where master does too: the three packages/date promote lines it no longer has, and promote_rational_bignum.rb's default one.
  • make reject-test, make defer-refusals-test and tools/refusals.sh pass.
  • The 532 test/*.rb programs whose .expected mentions NoMethodError or "undefined method" were built with --int-overflow=raise and with --int-overflow=promote.
    • 1046 of the 1064 builds print what CRuby prints.
    • 15 print what their .expected holds.
    • Three differ from their .expected exactly as on master: poly_call_fast_abi_gate under promote, promote_array_index_sum under raise, and range_symbol_endpoints under promote.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Calls to recognized methods on Array, Hash, String, Integer, Float, Symbol, and Range that the compiler cannot support are refused at compile time with a diagnostic naming the class and method.
    • With --defer-refusals, these calls raise NotImplementedError if reached, rather than falling through to NoMethodError.
  • Documentation
    • Updated the limitations table to describe how unsupported built-in method calls are handled.
  • Tests
    • Added coverage for unsupported Hash#transform_values and Array#drop_while call forms.

emit_unresolved_call raises NoMethodError for a call no emitter took, as
CRuby would for a method that does not exist. A call on a value typed as
an Array, a Hash, a String, an Integer, a Float, a Symbol or a Range of a
method that class has in CRuby (`h.transform_values` with no block) is
no such call: the compiler only has no route for it, and the program
raised NoMethodError where CRuby calls the method, with no refusal.

Such a call is now refused at compile time, naming the class and the
method; under --defer-refusals it raises NotImplementedError where it
runs. Only a call the program wrote is refused: an arm a rewrite builds
is guarded by a test that may never pass (a class's own arm of
desugar_builtin_enum_calls, the arities and block forms of
desugar_builtin_splat_forward, desugar_unpack_block's block test), and
keeps the NoMethodError it raised before.
`none_yet.drop_while(&:label)`, on the answer of a method that returns
a local assigned only `[]`: no route of the compiler takes the call, and
it is refused, naming Array#drop_while, where it raised NoMethodError.

Walkthrough

The analyzer now identifies source-written calls. Code generation refuses unresolved calls to known methods on supported built-in types. Tests cover Hash#transform_values and Array#drop_while, and the limitations table describes the refusal behavior.

Comment thread src/codegen_call.c Outdated
unresolved_builtin_refusal ran ahead of the lazy-chain refusal in
emit_unresolved_call. `unsupported` does not return, so a call both
would refuse would have been named only as a method no route takes,
losing the lazy-chain refusal's words on what to write instead. It now
runs after every refusal of a particular shape there, just before the
NoMethodError gate. No refusal's words change: the program-written
`lazy` calls of test/reject reach the lazy-chain refusal either way.

#10166 refused every call on a builtin's value of a method the class has
that no emitter took. A call with arguments can lack a route because
CRuby rejects one of them as well: `[1, 2, 3].find(42) { false }` raises
NoMethodError over 42.call (ruby/spec core/array find_spec__008 and
rfind_spec__008, which passed and were refused), and gsub!(an Array)
raises TypeError (test/rbs-seed/str_gsub_bang_enum_pattern, refused).
The gate's raise stands for that, so only a call with no arguments is
refused, the shape #10166's examples have.

Merged in 4ea5afb, with one follow-up (d2c1873): the refusal now applies only to a call with no arguments. With arguments, a missing route can coincide with CRuby raising over one of them: [1, 2, 3].find(42) { false } raises NoMethodError (42.call), which ruby/spec core/array find_spec__008 and rfind_spec__008 check and which passed through the gate's raise; and gsub!(an_array) raises TypeError (test/rbs-seed/str_gsub_bang_enum_pattern). Both were refused with the first version. Your two examples (transform_values, drop_while(&:label)) take no arguments and are still refused. Thanks!
