Receiving a deluge of spam comments lately

The amount of spam I'm receiving recently is approaching my limit, 5-10 nearly identical spam links for crypto gambling and weed gummies a day, which is a lot for a blog that receives close to zero legitimate comments. I'd hate to disable them for anyone who wants to use them in the future, though. Would you feel inclined to add a simple captcha? I wouldn't want a big third-party JS plugin, but even a simple "how many Rs in the word strawberry" kind of question might curtail a lot of it.

Sorry to hear about this! The sad truth is that this is the case as one's blog domain name becomes a bit more popular on the internet.

There used to be some simple captchas like the ones you describe in the user sign up page but they didn't really work. I doubt they would work in the comments section either. There are some things that we could add to improve comments, but probably nothing that would solve the problem adequately. I plan to visit this problem at some point in the future.
