Assessment: Redesign feedback and instruction cards - #13466
Structured grading assessment used plain feedback rows and instruction rows that were hard to scan, and multi-use instructions only had a checkbox (all-or-nothing) which was confusing when the same instruction could be applied several times. This PR redesigns unreferenced and inline feedback cards and structured grading instruction items with the TUM UI look, adds a compact − count / limit + control on instructions, moves Add new Feedback onto the points header line in primary blue, and clarifies the uncheck confirmation when removing every application of an instruction.
Checklist
General
I tested all changes and their related features with all corresponding user types on a test server.
Important: I implemented the changes with a very good performance, prevented too many (unnecessary) REST calls and made sure the UI is responsive, even with large data (e.g. using paging).
I strictly followed the principle of data economy for all client-server REST calls.
Following the theming guidelines, I specified colors only in the theming variable files and checked that the changes look consistent in both the light and the dark theme.
I added multiple integration tests (Vitest) related to the features (with a high test coverage), while following the test guidelines.
I added authorities to all new routes and checked the course groups for displaying navigation elements (links, buttons).
I documented the TypeScript code using JSDoc style.
I added multiple screenshots/screencasts of my UI changes.
I translated all newly inserted strings into English and German.
Motivation and Context
The feedback cards and instruction items look outdated, especially when compared to the overall design of Artemis. Additionally, tutors need clearer visual structure when assessing: what each feedback costs, which criterion it belongs to, and how often a reusable instruction is already applied. The instruction checkbox alone did not communicate multi-use well. The free-text “Add new Feedback” control sat above the list and looked like a success action rather than the primary add action next to the score summary.
Description
Client
Redesigned assessment feedback cards for unreferenced and inline feedback, with consistent score, text, and action areas. Saved inline cards stay collapsed until edited.
Updated structured grading instruction cards to make their instruction, student-facing feedback, points, and usage count easier to scan.
Added − / + controls to remove or add one application of an instruction. The checkbox still removes all applications after confirmation; the usage tooltip explains the current count and limit.
Moved Add new Feedback beside the assessment points summary.
Kept criterion grouping and the Base award / Deductions / Final score summary.
Added assessment-specific styling and translated text for the instruction usage and confirmation controls. Other uses of the shared feedback component retain their existing layout.
Steps for Testing
Prerequisites
Create a programming exercise with manual assessment (set start + due date).
Configure structured grading criteria with at least:
one instruction with usageCount > 1 (e.g. 5),
instructions in two different criteria.
Set due date to now, then open assessment as tutor: Assessment → Exercise Dashboard → Start/Continue Assessment.
Feedback cards (unreferenced)
Click Add new Feedback (primary blue). Confirm it sits on the same line as the points summary, to the right of Base award / Deductions / Final (or, with criterion groups, on the Other feedback line to the right of the points badge).
Confirm the new card uses the redesigned layout.
Leave feedback text empty and try Save/Submit — actions stay blocked with the incomplete-feedback explanation.
Instruction items + multi-use
Hover the n / limit text — usage tooltip appears there (no progress slider).
Use +: one feedback card is added under that criterion; counter increases by 1; checkbox becomes checked.
Use + again up to the limit — further + disabled when exhausted.
Use −: removes one card; counter decreases by 1.
Inline feedback (code)
Add inline feedback on a code line (with and without a linked grading instruction).
Confirm edit and view states match the redesigned card style (points, text, actions).
Linking an instruction from the instruction list / drop still ticks usage and respects usage limits.

@SultanTheHL The cancellation guard and modeling changes address my remaining findings. I reviewed the full diff and found no additional actionable issues; this looks good to me. Fifteen CI checks remain unfinished, including client and server tests and client compilation; the current checks report no failures.

@SultanTheHL The earlier cancellation, title-editor, resizing, save-in-flight, and draft-focus findings are fixed. I reviewed the full current diff and found no further actionable issues; this looks good to me. Quality / Client Compilation is red, but the captured output only reports exit code 1, so I couldn't identify or attribute the failure. Test / Client Tests, Test / Server Tests Report, and E2E / Run All E2E Tests (PR) remain unfinished.

Limit linked-feedback title suppression to assessment layout.
getReferencedFeedbackTitle is shared by assessment and non-assessment consumers, but it now returns an empty title for every feedback with gradingInstruction. Non-assessment result views can receive linked feedback. When that feedback has both text and detailText, the previous behavior used text as its title. The current code removes that title.
Suggested fix
- if (feedback.gradingInstruction) {+ if (this.assessmentLayout() && feedback.gradingInstruction) {
return '';
}
Update the linked-feedback component spec to set assessmentLayout for the case that expects an empty title.

Cover the no-host keyboard arming path with allowArming enabled.
The test sets allowArming to false before unregistering the host. The card attributes and Enter handler are therefore disabled by allowArming, so these assertions do not test host unregistration. No other test in the inspected assessment test scopes covers onInstructionKeydown for this card.

@SultanTheHL The earlier inline-edit cancellation, title-editor, resizing, save-in-flight, and draft-focus issues are fixed. I reviewed the full current diff and found no additional actionable issues; this looks good to me. The E2E run failed before any tests ran, with exit code 127 and missing reports; that infrastructure failure is unrelated to these changes, but the E2E checks and required CI gate remain red.
