fix: guide recovery after upgrading from an auto-login installation - #15789
Conversation
…rtup credentials error With auto-login disabled by default in 1.13, an installation upgraded from 1.12 exits at startup with "Username and password must be set". The message names neither the variable to set nor where to read about upgrading. Keep the original sentence as the prefix, name LANGFLOW_SUPERUSER_PASSWORD, and link the upgrade-from-auto-login section of the authentication docs. The last_login_at guard on the default account is not changed. Refs LE-3036
…-login The upgrade section only covered preparing the account before upgrading. For users who already upgraded it pointed to an existing administrator credential or a backed-up previous installation, which a pip user typically does not have, and the previous release cannot start against the migrated database. Document the recovery that works on the current release: re-enable auto-login temporarily, set a password on the same account through the users API, then disable auto-login again. Add a troubleshooting entry for the symptoms and a warning in the OSS version management section. Refs LE-3036

196-228: 🔒 Security & Privacy | 🔵 Trivial | ⚡ Quick winKeep the recovery password out of shell history.
If users replace
NEW_PASSWORDwith the real password, their shell may retain that value in history. Use variable expansion, and tell users to setNEW_PASSWORDwithout recording its value in shell history.Suggested fix
5. Set a strong password on that account. Don't use the legacy default value `langflow`. + Set `NEW_PASSWORD` by a method that does not record its value in shell history. ```bash curl -s -X PATCH http://localhost:7860/api/v1/users/USER_ID \ -H "Authorization: Bearer ACCESS_TOKEN" \ -H "Content-Type: application/json" \ - -d '{"password": "NEW_PASSWORD"}' + -d "{\"password\": \"$NEW_PASSWORD\"}" ```<repository_evidence>
The recovery command places theNEW_PASSWORDplaceholder inside the command text. Replacing that placeholder with a real password makes the credential part of the command entered by the user.
A shell can retain the entered command in history, so the literal-password form can expose the password through shell history. The proposed"$NEW_PASSWORD"expansion keeps the value out of that command text, provided the variable is set without recording its value.
The recovery heading is a#####child of the surrounding####headings and uses sentence case.
The applicable documentation rule requires sentence-case headers. It does not prohibit the recovery heading or its nesting level.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win
Link the error to the release page with the recovery section.
The unversioned URL currently opens the authentication page marked 1.12.x, which does not have the upgrade-from-auto-login anchor. Users who hit this 1.13 startup error therefore do not reach the recovery steps. Point to the versioned page that contains the section, then update the URL when 1.13 becomes the stable docs version. The current page is marked 1.12.x, while the PR context places the recovery section under /next/. (docs.langflow.org)

The unversioned docs root serves 1.12.x until 1.13 becomes the stable version, and that page has no upgrade-from-auto-login anchor. Link the next version page, which carries the section, so the error leads to the recovery steps. Refs LE-3036
Typing the new password inside the curl command stores it in plain text in the shell history file. Read it into a variable first, and note that quote and backslash characters break the JSON body. Refs LE-3036

Problem
1.13 disables auto-login by default. A pip installation upgraded from 1.12 exits at startup with
Username and password must be set, which names neither the variable to set nor the upgrade docs. AfterLANGFLOW_SUPERUSER_PASSWORDis set, sign-in still fails withIncorrect username or password: thelangflowaccount already haslast_login_at(set by auto-login) and a generated password, soteardown_superuserleaves it untouched. The only documented recovery pointed to an administrator credential or a backed-up previous installation, which a pip user typically does not have.Changes
setup_superuser: the missing-credentials error keeps its original sentence, namesLANGFLOW_SUPERUSER_PASSWORD, and linksapi-keys-and-authentication#upgrade-from-auto-login.PATCH /api/v1/users/{id}, disable auto-login), a troubleshooting entry, and a warning under "Manage the Langflow OSS version". The "existing administrator credential or backed-up installation" guidance is replaced by a pointer to the new section.last_login_atguard inteardown_superuser. Applying the configured password to an account that has already signed in is a security decision for the auth owners. How to validate
Use an isolated
LANGFLOW_CONFIG_DIRand a SQLiteLANGFLOW_DATABASE_URL.LANGFLOW_AUTO_LOGIN=true, callGET /api/v1/auto_login, and create a flow. This reproduces a 1.12 pip install: accountlangflowwithlast_login_atset that owns a flow.LANGFLOW_AUTO_LOGIN=falseand noLANGFLOW_SUPERUSER_PASSWORD. Startup exits withUsername and password must be set. Set LANGFLOW_SUPERUSER_PASSWORD before starting Langflow. ...and the docs link.LANGFLOW_SUPERUSER_PASSWORD=<pw>.POST /api/v1/loginaslangflowreturns 401Incorrect username or password(unchanged; this is the case the new docs recover).LANGFLOW_AUTO_LOGIN=true, thenGET /api/v1/auto_login,GET /api/v1/users/whoami,PATCH /api/v1/users/{id}with{"password": "<new>"}.LANGFLOW_AUTO_LOGIN=falseandLANGFLOW_SUPERUSER_PASSWORD=<new>.POST /api/v1/loginreturns 200, the previous password returns 401, and the flow from step 1 is listed under the same account.Docs preview:
cd docs && npm ci && npx docusaurus start, then open/next/api-keys-and-authentication#recover-access-after-upgrading.Tests
test_setup_superuser_with_no_configured_credentials_fails_closednow asserts that the error namesLANGFLOW_SUPERUSER_PASSWORDand the upgrade anchor. It fails against the baseservices/utils.pyand passes with the change.test_setup_superuser_flow.py: 24 passed, 9 skipped (Postgres variants). Ruff check and format pass.Note
The startup error links the
/next/docs version, because the unversioned docs root serves 1.12.x until 1.13 becomes the stable docs version. Revisit the link when that happens.Summary by CodeRabbit
