Summary

Documents the canonical lancedb: field metadata key conventions on the schema evolution page.

Changes

  • Added a "Canonical metadata keys" subsection under "Update field metadata" in the schema and data evolution page.
  • Documented the four convention keys: lancedb:description, lancedb:tag:<name>, lancedb:logical-column, and lancedb:status (with its production, candidate, deprecated, archived values).
  • Noted that these are conventions rather than enforced constraints, and that Enterprise tooling and agents rely on them.

Context

LanceDB adopted canonical metadata key conventions so the Enterprise UI can display field metadata consistently and agents can find information in a predictable place. The upstream change documents these conventions across the Python, TypeScript, and Rust SDK references for update_field_metadata/updateFieldMetadata.
