Summary

Always show the OAuth authorization URL in the terminal when logging in to Grok CLI, instead of only when the browser launcher reports an error.

Background & Motivation

In CLI authentication flows, attempting to automatically launch a system browser (open, rundll32, or xdg-open) is a great convenience, but unconditionally displaying the authorization URL in the terminal is an essential best practice:

  1. Headless, SSH, and Remote Environments: When developing over SSH, in devcontainers, tmux, or remote servers, graphical browser launchers cannot open a local browser (or fail silently). The developer needs the URL in their terminal to click or copy-paste it into their local machine's browser.
  2. WSL (Windows Subsystem for Linux): On WSL installations without desktop utilities (e.g. wslu/wslview), /usr/bin/xdg-open is present on disk but terminates with an error (no method available). In Node.js, child_process.spawn's 'error' event only fires if binary execution fails (such as ENOENT), not when the spawned process exits with a non-zero exit code. As a result, the launcher error callback is never invoked, leading pi-grok-cli to assume the browser opened successfully and never show the URL.
  3. Popup Blockers & Window Focus: Even when a browser does open, it may launch in the background, in another workspace/monitor, or get swallowed by popup policies. Having the URL visible in the terminal ensures the user is never stranded.
  4. CLI Ecosystem Consistency: Industry-standard tools (gh auth login, aws sso login, gcloud auth login, etc.) always print the target URL in the terminal while attempting to trigger the system browser in parallel.

Changes

  • src/provider/accounts.ts:
    • Always notify Open this URL to continue login: ${event.url} as a warning, alongside the automatic browser launch.
      • It must be a warning: Pi's TUI merges back-to-back info notifications into one status line, so an info URL is immediately overwritten by the instructions that follow. Warnings are always appended as their own line.
    • openAuthorizationUrl no longer takes an error callback; it only swallows the spawn 'error' event so a missing launcher can't crash Pi.
  • tests/provider/accounts.test.ts:
    • Assert the URL is shown as a warning even when the browser launcher emits no error, and that a later spawn error is handled.

Validation

  • bun run check: Biome, typecheck, Knip, jscpd and all 332 tests pass.
  • Manually checked in Pi 1.1.0's TUI with a fake open/xdg-open that exits 1: the URL warning stays visible above the instructions line.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Improvements
    • Authorization URLs appear in an informational notification before the app attempts to open them. If opening fails—including when the browser process exits unsuccessfully—a warning includes the URL.
    • Provider instructions are shown when supplied; fallback instructions are not displayed when none are provided.

The authorization URL opener now reports child-process errors and nonzero, non-null exit codes through a shared callback. A guard prevents the callback from running more than once. Tests cover both failure events.

P2 Silent browser failures go untested

The new assertion runs only after the test emits a browser-launch error. It would still pass if the URL's info notification moved into the error callback, bringing back the bug this PR fixes. Add a test where the browser launcher emits no error and assert that the URL is shown as info.

Note: If this suggestion doesn't match your team's coding style, reply to this and let me know. I'll remember it for next time!

Addressed in edb1235: the URL is now always sent as a warning, and the test asserts it without the launcher emitting any error (the error is only emitted afterwards to check it's swallowed).

@smota I tried this in Pi's TUI (1.1.0) though, and the URL line doesn't stick. Pi merges back-to-back info notifications into one line, so the instructions message replaces the URL right away. I only see Authorize xAI, then return to pi…. The old code sent the URL as a warning, which gets its own line.

Easy to repro with a fake open/xdg-open that exits 1:

HOME=$(mktemp -d) PATH="/path/to/fake-open:$PATH" pi -ne -e .

How did you test it? If it works on your end I'd like to know how.

Thanks for catching that and sharing the reproduction command! That explains exactly what happened.

Why it didn't stick

In Pi 1.1.0 (interactive-mode.js's showStatus), back-to-back info notifications update the previous status line instead of appending to avoid log spam. Calling ctx.ui.notify(url, 'info') immediately followed by ctx.ui.notify(instructions, 'info') caused the instructions to overwrite the URL line in the same tick.

Why fake-open exiting 1 didn't trigger the warning

In Node's child_process.spawn(), the 'error' event only fires if binary execution fails (such as ENOENT when the binary doesn't exist). When open or xdg-open exists on disk but exits with a non-zero code (like exit 1 in your fake opener, or exit 2 on headless WSL where xdg-open can't find a graphical browser):

  • Node emits 'exit', not 'error'.
  • Because openAuthorizationUrl was only listening to child.once('error'), non-zero exit code failures were never caught, so the fallback warning never triggered.

Updated Fix (pushed to this PR)

  1. Added exit code handling to openAuthorizationUrl:
    let failed = false;
    const fail = () => {
      if (failed) return;
      failed = true;
      onError();
    };
    child.once('error', fail);
    child.once('exit', (code) => {
      if (code !== 0 && code !== null) fail();
    });
  2. Restored the URL as 'warning' on failure:
    When the browser opener fails (either spawn error or exit code != 0), it notifies with 'warning'. In Pi's TUI, warnings use showWarning(), which appends a separate line to the chat container and never gets merged into the info line.
  3. Updated unit tests:
    Parameterized the test with it.each to verify both failure paths: spawn error and non-zero exit code (child.emit('exit', 1)).

How I tested it

  1. Ran bun run check: all 333 tests passing with 0 lint, typecheck, or duplication issues.
  2. Verified with a fake open/xdg-open script that exits 1: openAuthorizationUrl immediately captures exit 1 and emits the warning with the URL, keeping both the instructions and the warning link visible in the TUI.

Display the authorization URL on the successful opener path.

When the browser opener exits successfully, onError does not run. The terminal then shows only the instructions, not the authorization URL. Keep the failure warning, but display the URL independently of the opener result. Use a notification form that remains visible beside the subsequent instructions; the maintainer reports that consecutive info notifications merge in Pi’s TUI.

Following up on this — after testing both scenarios directly inside Pi 1.1.0's TUI (pi -ne -e . with /grok-cli-accounts), here is the updated approach pushed in commit edb1235:

Context & TUI Behavior

In Pi's TUI architecture:

  • ctx.ui.notify(..., 'info') calls showStatus(), which updates the status line in-place. Sending two info notifications back-to-back causes the instructions to immediately overwrite the URL.
  • ctx.ui.notify(..., 'warning') calls showWarning(), which appends a dedicated, permanent line to the chat container.

The Fix

Instead of only sending the warning when the browser opener fails (which leaves users in WSL/remote/headless environments without a visible link when the opener exits 0 or delegates silently):

  1. The authorization URL is sent unconditionally as a 'warning':
    openAuthorizationUrl(event.url);
    ctx.ui.notify(`Open this URL to continue login: ${event.url}`, 'warning');
    ctx.ui.notify(event.instructions ?? 'Complete the Grok CLI login in your browser.', 'info');
  2. The URL line sticks permanently on screen, while the instructions appear below it in the status line.
  3. openAuthorizationUrl launches the browser as a best-effort background process with safe error suppression (child.once('error', () => {})) so missing binaries never throw unhandled errors.

Verification

  • Tested with the exact repro command: HOME=$(mktemp -d) PATH="/path/to/fake-open:$PATH" pi -ne -e . -> /grok-cli-accounts -> Add account. Both the URL and the instruction/input prompt stay visible simultaneously in the TUI.
  • bun run check passes cleanly (332 tests passing, 0 lint/typecheck/duplication issues).
