fix(provider): pass xAI's raised Grok CLI version gate - #15
Conversation
xAI now answers HTTP 426 when x-grok-client-version is below 1.0.13, and the extension still sent 0.2.91, so every request failed. The gate reads only that header, not User-Agent (verified against the live endpoint). - Resolve the version once per process from https://x.ai/cli/stable, the pointer the official installer reads, and send the bundled 1.0.46 when the lookup fails. PI_GROK_CLI_VERSION_URL overrides the pointer URL. - Send User-Agent and x-grok-client-identifier in the grok-shell format the official 1.0.x client uses. - Require pi 0.86.0. pi-ai 0.86 prefixes provider errors with "grok-cli API error", which the proxy retry and balance-exhaustion rotation matchers did not recognize. Fail a response that ends with the new "pending" stop reason instead of completing it. Fixes #14

Why: - The lockfile still recorded the >=0.80.9 Pi peer minimums after package.json raised them to >=0.86.0. What: - Regenerate bun.lock so its peer ranges match the manifest; resolved packages are unchanged. Validation: - bun install --frozen-lockfile passed. LOC: src/ +0 / -0 = net +0 tests/ +0 / -0 = net +0 *.md +0 / -0 = net +0 Total +0 / -0 = net +0
Why: - The version lookup was cached for the whole process, so a failed lookup or a minimum raised mid-session kept every request at HTTP 426 until pi restarted. What: - When the gate answers 426 before any output, discard the cached version, look it up again, and retry the request once with the new headers. - Count conversation-ID rotations separately so a version retry does not consume the 401/502/520 retry budget. Validation: - bun run check passed with 331 tests after the new refresh and 426-retry tests failed before the change. LOC: src/ +35 / -9 = net +26 tests/ +60 / -1 = net +59 *.md +0 / -0 = net +0 Total +95 / -10 = net +85

Why: - Two requests rejected at once each cleared the cache and started a lookup, so a later failed lookup could cache the bundled release over a newer one that the other lookup had found. What: - Concurrent refreshes now reuse the lookup already in flight. Validation: - bun run check passed with 332 tests after the new concurrent-refresh test failed before the change. LOC: src/ +10 / -2 = net +8 tests/ +30 / -9 = net +21 *.md +0 / -0 = net +0 Total +40 / -11 = net +29

Fixes #14.
Problem
xAI now rejects inference requests with HTTP 426 when

cli-chat-proxy.grok.com/v1/responsesshow the gate reads onlyx-grok-client-version. User-Agent doesn't matter: changing only the UA still gets 426, changing only the header gets 200, and a missing header gets 426 "(none)"./models,/billing, and Imagine onapi.x.aiaren't gated.Changes
https://x.ai/cli/stable(the pointer the official installer reads) and sends it per request. If the lookup fails, the bundled1.0.46is sent instead. A raised minimum then needs only a pi restart, not an extension release.PI_GROK_CLI_VERSION_URLoverrides the pointer URL; it's documented inCONFIGURATION.md. That silently disabled the proxy retry with a new conversation ID (401/502/520) and the account rotation on exhausted balance (402). Both matchers now use the new prefix. pi 0.86 also added a"pending"stop reason; a response that ends with it now fails instead of reportingdone.Verification
