Adds right-to-left (Hebrew, Arabic) text display in herdr panes. It is on by default, needs no user setting, and agrees with the outer terminal through the standard BiDi mode handshake. Upstream issue: #5118

Fixes #5118

Before / after

Same session and panes, same output, rendered in a browser terminal that has no BiDi of its own (xterm.js). So every reordered glyph here comes from herdr.

Before: today's behaviour ([ui] bidi = false). Hebrew letters show in logical order, so they read backwards.

bidi off

After: the new default. Hebrew reads correctly. Latin words, numbers (1,000, 42), paths and the pane border stay where they belong, and the right pane is reordered on its own.

bidi on

Problem

herdr draws every pane cell itself and writes the finished frame to the outer terminal. The outer terminal (iTerm2, VS Code, Ghostty, browser clients) therefore never gets a chance to apply bidirectional layout, even when it supports it. Hebrew and Arabic show in logical order: שלום appears as םולש.

Outer-terminal handshake (no user setting)

The freedesktop BiDi in Terminal Emulators spec uses ECMA-48 BDSM (mode 8). CSI 8 h is implicit (the terminal reorders) and CSI 8 l is explicit (the app already reordered).

  • At startup the client adds CSI 8 $ p to the host capability probe it already sends (with ?1016$p and DA1).
  • Host reports BDSM set and switchable (status 1, e.g. VTE, WezTerm with BiDi on): herdr sends CSI 8 l, so text is never reversed twice. It sends CSI 8 l again after a host reset (focus-in, resize refresh). On exit, including Drop and the panic hook, it sends CSI 8 h, but only if herdr made the switch.
  • Host reports BDSM permanently set (status 3): herdr never switches it and leaves rows in logical order, so the host lays them out.
  • Host answers "reset" or "not recognized", or doesn't answer (xterm.js/VS Code, Ghostty, iTerm2, kitty): herdr changes nothing on the host, and its own reordering is the only one.
  • Each client negotiates with its own outer terminal, so clients that use different terminals don't affect each other. Direct attach never switches, because the pane's own bytes reach the host there.

Escape hatch: [ui] bidi = false turns reordering off. It is live-reloaded, and the mode switch is applied again on reload.

What it does

  • Runs the Unicode Bidirectional Algorithm (UAX fix: support IME input for Chinese and other UTF-8 characters #9) on each pane row, with a left-to-right base direction. This is the same model as WezTerm's bidi_direction = "AutoLeftToRight".
  • Runs in the client, after selection, search and link highlights are stamped, and only inside each pane's inner rect. It never crosses pane borders, the sidebar or the mode bar. Runs of box-drawing characters split a row, so table frames stay put. Paired brackets are mirrored.
  • Copy stays logical. Copied text, selection text and herdr agent read are unchanged, because the server buffer and the OSC 52 copy path are untouched.
  • Mouse and cursor follow the drawn glyphs. One column map per reordered row remaps the cursor and every pane-content mouse path: forwarded mouse reports including SGR pixel x, selection, word select, link hover and Ctrl-click. Chrome (menus, overlays, toasts, split handles) keeps using the raw pointer.
  • Fast path kept. Surface patches that touch a reordered row (old row, new span or cursor row) recompose instead of using the span fast path. ASCII rows cost one byte compare per cell.
  • One layout function. src/pane_display.rs exposes layout_segment(), which returns the column map. It validates the map (bijection, wide-char head and tail intact) and falls back to logical order if the layout is invalid.
  • Pane apps can opt out. A pane that sends CSI 8 l (BDSM explicit) is not reordered, and CSI 8 h turns reordering back on. Vendor patch 0009 adds ANSI mode 8 to libghostty-vt and answers ANSI DECRQM, so a nested herdr's probe sees "set" and the outer herdr stops reordering that pane. The mode reaches clients as ClientShellPane.bidi_explicit.
  • New dependency: unicode-bidi 0.3.18 (MIT OR Apache-2.0, no transitive dependencies).

Default on

Earlier revisions of this PR made BiDi opt-in. A maintainer pointed out that a user setting breaks when the client and host terminals don't match, so the handshake above replaced the setting. The opt-in version is kept on backup/bidi-opt-in.

Performance

Client compose of a 146x32 frame, median of 200 samples, release build, Apple M-series (cargo test --release --bin herdr -- --ignored pane_display_render_scale_profile --nocapture):

panes rows bidi off bidi on, ASCII bidi on, full-screen Hebrew
1 30 129 µs 126 µs 318 µs
15 150 136 µs 133 µs 343 µs

With BiDi on, ASCII rows cost the same as with it off. The cost follows the number of reordered rows, not the number of panes. The profile does not measure the extra full composes that streaming RTL output triggers by leaving the fast path.

Limitations

  • One row is one paragraph. Text wrapped across rows is reordered per row.
  • Space-aligned RTL tables can still merge columns.
  • Panes showing kitty graphics are not transformed.
  • Popups are always laid out, because their BiDi mode isn't sent to clients yet.
  • A host that reorders on its own but doesn't answer CSI 8 $ p would still reverse text twice. VTE and WezTerm both answer.
  • Streaming Hebrew output with BiDi on leaves the patch fast path: about 0.35 ms per line instead of 2 µs (bidi_streaming_profile).
  • No Arabic letter shaping (joining forms).

Tests

  • 16 unit tests for the algorithm (src/pane_display/tests.rs): pure Hebrew, mixed Hebrew/Latin/digits, niqqud and harakat, wide emoji and CJK, pane border, box-drawing tables, bracket mirroring, explicit RLO/RLI/RLM, Arabic-Indic digits, invalid-transform fallback.
  • 12 client tests (src/client/shell/tests/pane_display.rs): only pane cells change, side-by-side panes reorder independently, cursor, selection highlight, forwarded mouse, Ctrl-click link column, SGR pixels, fast path versus recompose, popup, live reload, and a context-menu click over reordered rows.
  • 3 more client tests for image placements (pane and popup) and per-pane patch checks.
  • Handshake tests (src/client/terminal_setup.rs): CSI 8;Ps$y parsing split at every byte offset, mixed with the ?1016 reply, keyboard flags and typed input. All five reply values plus no reply. Lookalikes that are typed, malformed, for another mode, or pasted are left as input. Switching is idempotent and only happens for a BiDi host. Restore writes 8h only after herdr switched.
  • Full cargo nextest run --no-fail-fast: 3933 of 3946 passed. The failures are a known fake-ssh timeout (ssh_check_message_is_visible_while_authentication_waits) and load-related timeouts in machine_setup, client_mode and multi_client. Those changed between runs and pass with -j 4. cargo clippy --all-targets --locked -- -D warnings and cargo fmt --check are clean. config_reference_check, docs_translation_parity and test_ui_hot_path_architecture pass.
  • Manual: release build in an isolated session, checked in a browser terminal (screenshots above) and through a pty with a VT emulator.

Docs: config-reference.json plus configuration.mdx in en, ja and zh-cn.

🤖 Generated with Claude Code

Herdr composes every pane cell itself, so outer terminals never apply
bidirectional layout and Hebrew or Arabic text shows reversed.

Add a small closed registry of built-in pane row display transforms
(src/pane_display.rs), selected with `[ui] pane_transforms`, and ship
"bidi" as the first one: UAX herdrdev#9 via unicode-bidi with a left-to-right
base direction, like WezTerm's AutoLeftToRight. Box-drawing runs split
a row so table frames stay put, and paired brackets are mirrored.

The client applies the chain per pane inner row after selection, search
and link highlights are stamped, so highlights move with their glyphs
and nothing crosses pane borders, the sidebar, or the mode bar. The
cursor follows its glyph, mouse input is mapped back to logical columns
(including SGR pixel reports), and surface patches that touch reordered
rows recompose instead of taking the span fast path. Copy, selection
text, and pane reads stay logical. The default is an empty list, so
output is unchanged unless a user opts in; changes apply on reload.

refs herdrdev#5118
Remapping every mouse event before hit-testing sent mirrored columns to
chrome drawn over reordered rows, so a context menu item over Hebrew
text closed the menu without running. Keep the raw pointer for chrome,
menus, overlays, and split handles, and convert columns through the
display maps only where pane content is addressed: forwarded mouse
reports and SGR pixels, selection anchor and drag, word selection, and
link hover and activation.

Keep the previous frame's column maps when compose returns early, move
per-row buffers into the reusable scratch so unaffected rows never
allocate, and add an ignored client compose profile for 1 and 15 panes.

📝 Walkthrough

The change adds a configurable pane-row BiDi transform, enabled by default. Composed pane and popup rows can be visually reordered, while row maps translate cursor and pointer positions to logical columns. The client detects and manages compatible outer-terminal BiDi modes, including restoration during cleanup. Configuration diagnostics, documentation, and tests cover the transform, interaction mapping, patch handling, and terminal mode behavior.

Explanation

Issue #5118 requires Hebrew text to display in pane order consistent with the host terminal. The current head adds the bidi pane-row transform with Unicode bidirectional reordering, applies it during client composition, and keeps pane boundaries separate. Terminal setup also switches a host using implicit BiDi to explicit mode when needed, which prevents double reordering. The added unit and client tests cover Hebrew, mixed text, cursor, mouse, and pane mapping behavior.

@ogulcancelik @JJLiebig @minatoaquaMK2 tagging you because you review most of the changes to the client composition and config code this PR touches.

This adds an opt-in [ui] pane_transforms = ["bidi"] setting so Hebrew and Arabic render correctly in any outer terminal (VS Code, Ghostty, iTerm). It is off by default, and ASCII rows are unchanged. Context is in #5118, and screenshots and tests are in the description above.

I know the PR gate closed this automatically. If the feature fits herdr, I'd appreciate a review, and I'm happy to rework it or move it to a Discussion first. Thanks.

… per pane segment

Compose read surface.graphics, which set_pane_surface already moved into
the client graphics state, so image rows were never skipped. Popup rows
checked the always-empty legacy graphics bytes. Both now read the client
scene and filter placements by pane or popup target.

The surface-patch check now evaluates each pane's own inner-rect segment,
matching how compose transforms rows, so RTL text or image placeholders
in a neighbouring pane no longer decide the fast path.

@barnuri thanks for the PR, the approach to have a manual opt in seems a bit brittle, is there no OSC-or other flags inner vs outer terminals could hand through?

I have no real clue obviously on these languages, just more that I encountered so many problems with the "let's just add a user setting for this" approach where things started to break or mismatched client/host terminals or multiple clients suddenly broke. So trying to be proactive

@JJLiebig thanks for looking. That's a fair concern, and I looked into it before choosing opt-in.

Is there a flag the outer terminal can hand through? Not today. The only spec for BiDi in terminals is the freedesktop draft "BiDi in Terminal Emulators":

  • It defines one mode, ECMA-48 BDSM. CSI 8 h means implicit (the terminal reorders) and CSI 8 l means explicit (the app has already reordered).
  • A sequence to query BiDi support is still only on its "future ideas" list. There's no terminfo capability for it either.
  • VTE is the only listed implementation. VS Code (xterm.js), Ghostty, iTerm2 and kitty don't reorder at all, and those are the terminals where Hebrew renders reversed today. WezTerm does BiDi, but it's turned on by a WezTerm setting, not by an escape sequence.

So herdr can't reliably detect it. The outer terminal can't say "I do BiDi", and herdr can't ask.

Why it holds up with mismatched or multiple clients: the transform is display-only and runs in the client's composition step.

  • The server, the pane grid, scrollback, copy (OSC 52), search, agent detection and herdr pane read all keep the logical text.
  • Each client loads its own config (src/client/mod.rs) and composes its own frame. A client attached from VS Code can turn it on while one attached from a BiDi terminal leaves it off, and neither affects the other.
  • When it's off (the default), the transform list is empty and composition is unchanged.

The real risk is double reordering: turning it on inside a terminal that also reorders. Two things limit that:

  1. When the transform is on, herdr can send CSI 8 l to the outer terminal on attach and CSI 8 h on detach. That is exactly what the spec asks of apps that do their own BiDi, and it makes VTE stand down. I'm happy to add this to the PR.
  2. Other renderers can detect the setting and stand down. My web client for herdr (herdr-web) has its own RTL overlay. It reads herdr's [ui] pane_transforms, and if "bidi" is set it turns its overlay off, so text is never reversed twice (detection, commit).

The same herdr build inside a browser terminal that has no BiDi of its own:

Off (today) pane_transforms = ["bidi"]
off on

If you'd rather have this as a Discussion first, or with a different shape (for example a per-client toggle instead of a config key), tell me and I'll adapt it.

Make `ui.pane_transforms` default to ["bidi"] so right-to-left text renders
in reading order without a user setting; `[]` restores logical order.

The startup probe now also sends DECRQM for ECMA-48 BDSM (`CSI 8 $ p`) and
parses the ANSI-mode DECRPM reply (`CSI 8 ; Ps $ y`). When this client
reorders pane rows and the host reports implicit BiDi (it reorders text
itself, as WezTerm can), Herdr switches the host to explicit mode
(`CSI 8 l`) so text is not reordered twice, re-asserts it on host refresh,
follows live config reloads, and writes `CSI 8 h` on exit only when it
switched the mode. Direct attach and hosts that do not answer are untouched.

@JJLiebig following up on your point: I reworked it so the user doesn't set anything. Herdr and the outer terminal now agree on who does the reordering through the standard BiDi mode (ECMA-48 BDSM, mode 8).

Commit: barnuri@2216ef61 (+305/−31, about a third of it tests). This PR is closed, so it no longer shows new pushes; the live branch is barnuri#1.

  • At startup, the client adds CSI 8 $ p to the host capability probe it already sends (next to ?1016$p and DA1).
  • If the outer terminal says it reorders (VTE and WezTerm both track BDSM and answer the query), herdr sends CSI 8 l (explicit mode: "already reordered"), so the text is never reversed twice. On exit it sends CSI 8 h, but only if herdr made the switch. It also sends CSI 8 l again after a host reset.
  • If the terminal answers "not recognized" or doesn't answer at all (xterm.js/VS Code, Ghostty, iTerm2, kitty), there is nothing to switch, and herdr's reordering is the only one.
  • Each client negotiates with its own outer terminal, so clients that use different terminals don't affect each other. Direct attach never switches, because the pane's own bytes reach the host there.
  • BiDi is on by default. [ui] pane_transforms = [] stays as an escape hatch only, and changing it at runtime re-applies the mode switch.

One known gap: libghostty-vt doesn't track ANSI mode 8, so an app inside a pane can't send CSI 8 l to turn herdr's reordering off for its pane. That would need a one-line mode-table patch in the vendored libghostty-vt. I left it out to keep this small.

If you'd prefer the previous opt-in version, it's kept on backup/bidi-opt-in.

P2 Selection ends on wrong characters

Dragging above or below a pane calls content_column with the raw pointer position before Selection::drag clamps it to the selected pane. This uses another pane’s map, or no map at all. For a bottom row of אבגד, drawn as דגבא, dragging below its leftmost column records logical column 0 instead of 3. The selection then includes the wrong characters.

Clamp the visible position to the active pane before mapping its column. Keep the raw pointer position separately for scrolling.

Fixed in aa3a1bb. A drag now clamps the pointer to the selected pane's inner rect before mapping the column, so a drag outside the pane uses that pane's row map. The raw row still goes to update_selection_drag for autoscroll. Covered by selection_drag_outside_the_pane_maps_columns_through_the_selected_pane, which failed before the fix with exactly the wrong columns you described.

Defer the local reload frame until host BiDi mode is updated.

KeybindAction::ReloadConfig reloads and repaints locally before the server request is sent. A BiDi-capable host can therefore reorder an already transformed frame twice, or fail to reorder logical rows after transforms are disabled. Let apply_reload perform the reload, host-mode update, resize, and frame presentation as one operation.

drag above or below the pane uses that pane's reordered row map. Record the
host BDSM mode only after the write and flush succeed, and repaint in full
after a live reload changes the host mode so rows drawn under the old mode
are redrawn.

@coderabbitai on the outside-diff finding (src/client/shell/actions.rs:69-81, keybind ReloadConfig): the host mode switch is not missed. ServerReloadConfig always makes the server send ReloadSoundConfig, which runs apply_reload and switches the host mode. The real gap was that rows drawn before the switch kept the old host ordering, because the next frame only sent changes. Fixed in aa3a1bb: set_host_bidi_explicit now returns whether the mode changed, and apply_reload sets repaint_pending when it did, so the next frame repaints in full. I kept the immediate local reload so the key still responds instantly.

@JJLiebig thanks for merging master in. I merged your branch update into these fixes. On top of it, cargo nextest run -E 'kind(bin)' passes 3736/3736, and clippy and fmt are clean.

Scope and minimal approach

Reviewed 5475356a. My recommendation is revise before landing, but not simply cut tests to reduce LOC. Roughly half the 1,988 added lines are tests. Cursor/mouse mapping, logical copying, pane isolation, patch handling, and host-mode restoration are necessary consequences of visual reordering. A string-reversal patch would not be a safe alternative.

The avoidable scope is PaneRowTransform / BUILTINS / PaneDisplayChain in src/pane_display.rs. There is only one production transform. I would use a direct bidi layout function with its column maps and reusable scratch storage, plus a bidi-specific toggle if the escape hatch is retained. Defer ordered transforms, registry lookup, name diagnostics, and multi-transform map composition until a second concrete use case exists. Keep wide-cell validation and the interaction tests. This avoids establishing a generic public configuration contract to fix one rendering feature.

Correctness issues

  1. Default-on reordering cannot yet respect applications that already produce visual order. composition.rs:459–480 applies it without an inner-terminal bidi mode. The acknowledged nested-Herdr case therefore reverses an already-reordered row again, and an application cannot prevent that with CSI 8 l. The outer-host handshake does not solve this inner-pane problem. A global opt-out also disables the fix for unrelated panes. Before making this unconditional by default, support the relevant inner-terminal state through to the client, or explicitly narrow the rollout. Adding a vendor mode-table entry alone would not make the client consult that state.

  2. The drag change regresses selection even with transforms disabled. In mouse.rs:1749–1757, the horizontal coordinate is clamped before update_selection_drag sees it. Press the rightmost ASCII cell, then drag horizontally beyond the pane on the same row: the helper now sees the unchanged anchor column, so it never calls force_dragging() and release produces no selection. Previously the raw movement activated the one-cell selection. Preserve raw movement detection separately from the clamped/remapped endpoint.

  3. Autoscroll retains a mapping from an old row. The remapped logical column is saved as last_mouse_column in mouse.rs:282–287 and reused at 415–420 after scrolling. At visual column 0 of a four-letter Hebrew row, that is logical column 3. When an ASCII row scrolls under the stationary pointer, selection still targets column 3 instead of column 0. Keep the visual pointer and remap against the newly displayed row; cover a scroll between rows with different permutations.

  4. The host probe conflates switchable and permanently enabled bidi. terminal_setup.rs:265–269 maps DECRPM statuses 1 and 3 to the same value, then assumes CSI 8 l disables host reordering. Status 3 means permanently set: that host cannot be switched off, so applying our transform still double-reorders. Preserve that distinction and choose a safe fallback rather than recording a successful switch.

Evidence needed

The xterm.js screenshots do not establish the original macOS/iTerm2 behavior. Please include that exact echo interaction inside/outside Herdr and a nested/already-visual application case. The fixed-frame composition profile is useful, but omits the extra full compositions caused by RTL patch fallback. Measure streaming output at fixed geometry with 1 and 15 populated panes, including the repository's render-scale coverage, before concluding the default-on cost is acceptable.

This was a source review, not a local runtime reproduction. Current CI checks are green; I did not execute the PR code.

Drop PaneRowTransform, the BUILTINS registry, PaneDisplayChain, name
diagnostics, and multi-transform map composition. pane_display now exposes
one bidi layout function that returns the column map, reuses scratch
storage, and keeps wide-cell validation with fallback to logical order.

Replace [ui] pane_transforms with a live-reloaded [ui] bidi toggle
(default true).
Clamping and remapping the drag column before update_selection_drag hid
horizontal movement that left the pane from its last cell, so the press
never became a drag and release produced no selection, even with bidi off.
Compare the raw pointer with the anchor glyph's drawn column and clamp and
remap only the selection endpoint.
…er scrolling

Selection autoscroll stored the remapped logical column and reused it after
the pane scrolled, so a stationary pointer kept a column mapped through the
row drawn before the scroll. Store the visual pointer and remap it on each
tick, and once the displayed frame shows the autoscroll offset re-resolve the
endpoint on the next tick or on release.
DECRPM status 3 means the host's BiDi mode is permanently set, so CSI 8 l
cannot stop it reordering text. The probe mapped it like status 1 and then
recorded a successful switch. Keep the statuses apart: a permanently
implicit host is never written to, restore owes it nothing, and the client
leaves pane rows in logical order for the host to lay out.
Default-on reordering reversed rows that a pane application, such as a
nested Herdr, had already drawn in visual order. Track ECMA-48 BDSM per pane
so CSI 8 l opts a pane out and CSI 8 h opts it back in.

The vendored libghostty-vt had no ANSI mode 8 and never answered ANSI DECRQM;
local patch 0009 adds the mode-table entry (default set) and routes CSI Ps
$ p into the existing DECRQM branch, so a nested Herdr's probe sees the real
mode. The pane terminal mirrors the mode after each PTY write, a switch
requests a full render, the endpoint snapshot carries it as an optional
ClientShellPane.bidi_explicit field, and the client skips layout and patch
recomposition for those panes.
Add an ignored bidi_streaming_profile, also run by just bench-render-scale,
that streams ASCII or Hebrew lines into a pane at 120x40 with 1 and 15
populated panes, applies each row patch on the client, and counts and times
the full compositions BiDi rows force, with bidi off and on.

@akbash-bot thanks, all four correctness points checked out against the code. Each is fixed in its own commit, and the scope is reduced.

Scope (17e53cc): removed PaneRowTransform, BUILTINS, PaneDisplayChain, name diagnostics and map composition. pane_display is now one layout_segment() that returns the column map, with reusable scratch storage. Wide-cell validation and the fallback to logical order are kept, and a test feeds it a deliberately broken layout. [ui] pane_transforms is replaced by [ui] bidi = true, which is live-reloaded (docs en/ja/zh-cn, config-reference.json).

1. Inner-pane BiDi mode (f6ca4cb): apps in a pane can now opt out with CSI 8 l and back in with CSI 8 h. Vendor patch 0009 (indexed in vendor/libghostty-vt.patches.md) adds ANSI mode 8 (default set). It also lets ANSI DECRQM reach the existing handler: CSI 4 $ p and CSI 8 $ p previously got no reply, because only the two-intermediate DEC form was routed. The mode reaches clients as an optional ClientShellPane.bidi_explicit snapshot field (generation-1 compatible), and the client skips layout and patch recompose for those panes. So a nested herdr's probe sees "set", sends CSI 8 l, and the outer herdr stops reordering that pane.

2. Drag regression (74c52b5): movement detection now compares the raw pointer with the anchor glyph's drawn position. Only the endpoint is clamped and remapped. The test covers bidi off, bidi on with ASCII, and bidi on with Hebrew.

3. Autoscroll mapping (cf7ca80): autoscroll now stores the visual pointer and remaps it on every tick against the row shown after the scroll. The test reproduces your case: a Hebrew row scrolls out, an ASCII row scrolls in, and the endpoint is now column 0 instead of 3. It covers both mid-scroll and the scroll limit.

4. DECRPM status 3 (9b05bed): HostBidiMode keeps status 1 (switchable) separate from status 3 (permanently set). A permanently-set host is never sent CSI 8 l and gets nothing on restore. That client leaves rows in logical order for the host to lay out, and this survives a live reload.

Streaming cost (c4f6c5e, bidi_streaming_profile, also run by just bench-render-scale): release build, 120x40, median per streamed line over 40 samples, 3 runs:

panes content bidi fallback composes median µs p95 µs
1 ascii off / on 0/40 2 / 5 5 / 7
1 hebrew off / on 0 / 40 of 40 2 / 352–370 2 / 359–421
15 ascii off / on 0/40 2 / 2–3 2 / 4
15 hebrew off / on 0 / 40 of 40 2 / 340–346 2 / 357

ASCII streaming costs nothing extra. Streaming Hebrew with bidi on turns each 2 µs patch into a full compose of about 0.35 ms, and the pane count doesn't change that at fixed geometry. If you'd rather keep RTL rows on the fast path, I can patch the span and re-run layout on just that row instead of recomposing. I left that out to keep this small.

Known limits: popups are always laid out (their mode isn't sent to clients yet), and the pane mode isn't in pane get yet.

Full suite: 3956/3958, and the two failures (the fake-ssh timeout and a federated restart test) pass on rerun with -j 4. clippy, fmt and the docs/config/vendor-patch checks pass. I'll add the macOS terminal screenshots (echo inside/outside herdr, plus the nested case) in a follow-up comment.
