Safari 27 breaks CKEditor – Please bump CKEditor JS core to 48.5.2+ #633

Description

In Safari 27.0, the CKEditor field fails to load/render. This is caused by a known Safari 27 regression in WebKit regarding String#substr(), which crashes the editor on initialization.

The upstream issue has been fixed in CKEditor JS core v48.5.2 (see ckeditor/ckeditor5#20237).

Currently, craftcms/ckeditor v5.8.0 ships with CKEditor JS core 48.0.1 (CKEDITOR_VERSION in console).

Could you please release a patch updating the bundled CKEditor JS library to v48.5.2 or newer?

Steps to reproduce

  1. Open Craft CMS Control Panel in Safari 27.0 (macOS).
  2. Edit any entry containing a CKEditor field.
  3. Observe that the CKEditor field fails to load/render (field remains plain/empty):

It should look like this:

Thanks for bringing that to our attention! CKEditor 5.9.0 is out with CKE 48.5.2.
