chore(deps): upgrade dependencies flagged by security advisories - #459
Conversation
Clears all 29 open Dependabot alerts on this repo. Every alerted module is
an indirect dependency reachable only from the e2e suite, so none of them
were ever linked into the controller binary.
Direct bumps:
- helm.sh/helm/v3 v3.15.4 -> v3.21.3
- github.com/eclipse/paho.mqtt.golang v1.5.0 -> v1.5.1
- github.com/jackc/pgx/v5 v5.7.1 -> v5.9.2
- filippo.io/edwards25519 v1.1.0 -> v1.1.1
- github.com/aws/aws-sdk-go-v2/{aws/protocol/eventstream,service/cloudwatchlogs,service/lambda,service/s3}
- github.com/klauspost/compress v1.18.0 -> v1.18.7
- go.opentelemetry.io/otel and friends v1.43.0 -> v1.44.0
- oras.land/oras-go/v2 v2.6.1 -> v2.6.2
The helm bump drops github.com/docker/docker, github.com/docker/cli,
github.com/containerd/containerd and oras.land/oras-go v1 from the module
graph entirely, since helm 3.21 no longer uses the docker registry stack.
That retires 13 of the 29 alerts outright rather than upgrading past them.
It also pulls k8s.io/* from v0.36.1 to v0.36.2 and
github.com/Masterminds/sprig/v3 from v3.2.3 to v3.3.0; sprig is only used
by the e2e framework, and the k8s.io move is a patch release.
The last two entries are not Dependabot findings but govulncheck ones:
GO-2026-5841 (OOB read in klauspost/compress/s2), GO-2026-5158 (otel
baggage header length) and GO-2026-5880 (oras-go/v2), the last of which
the helm upgrade introduced. govulncheck now reports no reachable
vulnerabilities.

The otel core modules moved to v1.44.0 but the two OTLP trace exporters were left behind at v1.43.0. OpenTelemetry Go releases its stable modules as a set and expects them to be used at the same version, so bring the exporters up to match.

Heads up on the It is the The spec flips the dataplane Service to Nothing in this PR touches that path: every module bumped here is reachable only from the e2e dependency graph, and the failure is a kube-apiserver allocation conflict, not a code path change. |

Type of change:
What this PR does / why we need it:
Clears all 29 open Dependabot alerts on this repo, plus three findings that only
govulncheckreports.Every alerted module is an indirect dependency reachable only from the e2e suite —
test/e2e/frameworkpulls in helm, andtest/e2e/crds/*pull in terratest and paho — so none of them were ever linked into the controller binary. The upgrade is still worth doing to get the alert list back to zero.The helm bump is the interesting one: helm 3.21 no longer uses the docker registry stack, so
github.com/docker/docker,github.com/docker/cli,github.com/containerd/containerdandoras.land/oras-gov1 leave the module graph entirely. That retires 13 of the 29 alerts by removal rather than by upgrading past them — which also settles the four alerts that had no patched version to upgrade to (GHSA-rg2x-37c3-w2rh, GHSA-x86f-5xw2-fm2r, GHSA-vp62-88p7-qqf5, GHSA-pxq6-2prw-chj9 on docker/docker, and GHSA-xf85-363p-868w on oras-go v1).Two side effects worth calling out, both from the helm upgrade:
k8s.io/*moves v0.36.1 -> v0.36.2 (a patch release, and these do reach the controller binary), andgithub.com/Masterminds/sprig/v3moves v3.2.3 -> v3.3.0 (only used by the e2e framework's template helpers). The helm API surface we use —action.Configuration,action.NewInstall,LocateChart,loader.Load,cli.New,kube.GetConfig— is unchanged across the jump, sotest/e2e/framework/api7_framework.goneeded no edits.The last three entries are not Dependabot findings: GO-2026-5841 (OOB read in
klauspost/compress/s2), GO-2026-5158 (otel baggage header length no longer capped) and GO-2026-5880 (oras-go/v2), the last of which the helm upgrade itself introduced.After the bumps the only thing
govulncheck -test ./...still reports is GO-2026-5932, the advisory thatgolang.org/x/crypto/openpgpis unmaintained. That one is reachable — helm verifies chart provenance with it, soframework.deploy->LocateChartwalks intoopenpgp.CheckDetachedSignature— but it is pre-existing rather than something this PR introduces: helm imports it frompkg/provenance/sign.go(with its own//nolint) in 3.15.4 exactly as it does in 3.21.3. The advisory has no fixed version, the path is confined to the e2e framework installing a chart we control, and nothing in the controller binary touches it.No test cases are added since this is a dependency-version-only change.
go build ./...,go vet ./test/...and the full unit test suite pass locally.Pre-submission checklist:
