fix(usage): record the upstream's reported total_tokens on every endpoint family - #1335

…oint family The UsageEvent's total_tokens is the total the upstream itself reported, stored as received and never computed by the gateway. Only the chat family (chat completions, completions, /v1/messages, /v1/responses and their bridges, decisions) honoured it; every other family built its event without the field, so the row read as "this provider reports no total" even when it did. Now set from the upstream's own usage block on: - /v1/embeddings (an OpenAI-shape upstream's usage.total_tokens; the Bedrock and Vertex bridges fill the client-facing total from the prompt count, so their events keep it unset) - /v1/rerank - /v1/audio/transcriptions and /translations, buffered and streamed - /v1/images/generations and /v1/images/edits - /v1/realtime, summed over the session's usage frames and kept only while every frame reported one - completed-batch attribution, summed over the output lines under the same rule - passthrough routes metered as embeddings, rerank or images A family whose upstream reports no total still leaves the field unset.
A realtime response or batch line that counted no tokens (a cancelled response's empty usage) no longer wipes the session's or batch's summed upstream total; the every-report rule lives in one accumulator, usage_attr::ReportedTotalSum, used by both. Rerank's prompt count and reported total come from one reader, rerank_usage, on the typed endpoint and passthrough metering alike.

Review comments at @crates/aisix-proxy/src/realtime.rs:
- Line 743: Update the response completion handling around absorb_total so it is
called only when response.usage is present, preserving the previously reported
session total when usage is absent. Continue passing present usage reports
through absorb_total unchanged, including reports missing total_tokens so they
remain marked unreported.

The UsageEvent's
total_tokensis supposed to be the total the upstream itself reported, stored as received and never computed by the gateway. Only the chat family honoured that. Every other endpoint built its event without the field, so aPOST /v1/embeddingsagainst OpenAI (usage: {prompt_tokens: 1, total_tokens: 1}) landed withtotal_tokensnull, and so did every realtime session. The fix reads the upstream's own
usage.total_tokensthrough one helper,usage_attr::reported_total_tokens, and threads it to the event on each family that dropped it:/v1/embeddings:EmbeddingUsagegets an internalupstream_total_tokens. The OpenAI wire fills it from the reported total. The Bedrock and Vertex bridges fill the client-facingtotal_tokensfrom the prompt count (their upstreams report no total), so they leave it at 0 and the event stays unset./v1/rerank, whose prompt count and total now come from one reader (rerank_usage) shared with passthrough metering/v1/audio/transcriptionsand/translations, both the buffered reply and the streamed relay. Image and audio usage now travel asUsageStatsinstead of a(prompt, completion, modality)tuple, so the total rides along./v1/images/generationsand/v1/images/edits/v1/realtime: summed over the session'sresponse.doneand token-typed transcription frames. The total is kept only if every frame that counted tokens reported one; a cancelled response's empty usage neither adds to it nor breaks it. The rule lives inusage_attr::ReportedTotalSum.Chat completions, completions,
/v1/messages,/v1/responses(native and bridged) and decisions already carried it; the new e2e drives them too as a guard.count_tokens, video submission, the jobs management calls, MCP/A2A and the client-cancel events record no tokens at all, so they have no total to carry./v1/audio/speechrecords no tokens either, including the SSEstream_formatwhose terminal event does report usage. Adding token accounting there would change what speech bills, so it is left out of this fix.Behavior change: after upgrading, usage rows for the families above carry
total_tokenswhenever the upstream reported one. Nothing changes in client responses, rate-limit commits or Prometheus counters, and no configuration needs editing.Test:
usage-total-tokens-every-family-e2edrives every family against mocks whose reported total is deliberately not the sum of the counters beside it, and different per family. It asserts each emitted UsageEvent (read from a mock SLS exporter) carries that exact total. It also has an embeddings upstream that reports none, which must leave the field unset. Against the previous build, all twelve fixed cases came back without a total, while chat/responses/messages passed. Three passthrough unit expectations that had pinned the missing total are updated.🤖 Generated with Claude Code
