Suggested reviewers: Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to This change makes the service APIs optional and adds mux-only streaming. The author reports that shutdown with a live mux stream still records a send error after transport teardown, and the core test and coverage CI jobs fail on that case. Resolve the shutdown ordering or explicitly defer the test before merging. Two smaller CI and lint policy issues also remain open. 🚥 Pre-merge checks | ✅ 4 | ❌ 1❌ Failed checks (1 warning)

Code review of this PR at 2c53655: 13 findings, posted inline below.
One real bug, reproduced: a mux-only node whose attach to a mux-disabled peer fails leaves that peer's anchor stuck, and every later attach gets already attached. See the comment on tests/streaming_transport.rs:613.
Two design questions:
- On a mux-only node,
VELO_MESSENGER_MUX_DISABLE=1now makesbuild()fail, so it no longer works as a rollback. - Mux-only mode is detected from the default transport's key, not from an explicit flag.
The rest are out-of-date docs, CI and test coverage gaps, and small cleanups.
What was checked:
cargo check --all-targetspasses with no default features, with each feature on its own, with the defaults, and with nearly all features together.ucxwas not built, since it needs Linux.- Core clippy is clean.
- The new mux-only tests pass in the core build.
- crates.io has velo 0.18.0, so the bump to 0.19.0 covers the breaking change.

The kill switch now makes mux-only nodes fail at startup.
The messenger_mux rustdoc (lib.rs:341-345) and the book (batched-streaming.md:420) say that VELO_MESSENGER_MUX_DISABLE=1 rolls the mux back with no code change. Suppose an operator sets it across the fleet to back out a mux bug. Every node built with .mux_only() now fails here and restarts in a loop instead. The only way back is a code change that removes .mux_only().
Also, line 587 logs disabling the messenger mux at info just before this returns the error, so the log line is wrong for these nodes.
Please choose one of these and make the docs match:
- The env var wins over
mux_only, and the node keeps no streaming path to non-mux peers. build()fails, and the rollback docs say that mux-only nodes cannot use the kill switch.
There was a problem hiding this comment.
Kept startup failure for mux-only nodes: disabling their only stream transport is an invalid configuration. The migration guide, book, and rustdoc now say to remove mux_only() before using this rollback. Validation now runs before the disabling log, so a rejected mux-only build does not emit that misleading message.

The core build loses its only test for discover_and_register_peer.
This test now runs only with services. But the discovery traits, VeloBuilder::discovery and Velo::discover_and_register_peer are still core API. The core CI matrix (test-helpers, ucx,test-helpers) no longer runs it. So a regression in how discover_and_register_peer reaches the streaming transport would pass core CI.
A small in-test PeerDiscovery stub, in place of FilesystemPeerDiscovery, would let it run without services.
There was a problem hiding this comment.
Replaced the filesystem backend with a small in-test PeerDiscovery implementation and removed the services gate. The fan-out test now passes in both core and core-plus-UCX runs. It keeps the mux disabled so the test still exercises per-stream peer registration.

There was a problem hiding this comment.
Nit: in mux-only mode, the mux is inserted into registry twice: once at line 415, and again at line 461 under the same key, where it overwrites the same Arc.
This expect("mux-only config was validated") also depends on a check made in a different function (resolve_mux_config). If a later edit moves or loosens that check, this line panics.
To avoid both, take the mux's Arc inside the if config.enabled branch, and insert the per-stream transport only on the non-mux-only arm.
There was a problem hiding this comment.
Fixed in 067339a. Each installed transport is now inserted once, after selecting the primary transport. The expect is replaced with a returned error, and the early configuration validation remains.

After the final Velo drop, `_anchor_abort_attach` returned the error "anchor manager shut down". The other anchor cleanup handlers return Ok in this case. A manager that is gone holds no anchor, so the rollback has nothing to undo. The handler now returns Ok too. The final-drop test now sends `_anchor_abort_attach` with the other cleanup handlers and expects Ok. Signed-off-by: Ryan Olson <rolson@nvidia.com>

Summary
Make service APIs optional while retaining core messaging, streaming, discovery traits, rendezvous, and UCX. The default
servicesfeature gates events, named queues, and concrete discovery implementations. Existing service backend flags enableservicesautomatically. Applications that disable defaults must addservicesto use those APIs.Add
VeloBuilder::mux_only()to omit the fallback TCP/gRPC stream listener when every peer supports the messenger mux. Conflicting listener settings or a disabled mux fail before startup. The shared stream owner always stops streams and stops the optional listener when present.Reject incompatible nonempty transport offers while preserving legacy empty offers. If connect fails after an accepted attach, perform bounded, identity-checked SPSC rollback or sender-ID MPSC cleanup, then return the original error. Stale rollback cannot detach a replacement. The rollback handler holds the manager weakly. After the final owner drop, it returns
Ok, the same as the other anchor cleanup handlers: a manager that is gone holds no anchor.Velo is 0.19.0, the version that #116 set. The latest published version is 0.18.0, so this PR needs no further bump.
Rebase onto main
#116 merged as a squash commit that includes #120. This branch now holds only the nine commits of this PR, rebased onto

It also gates two fix(velo): review fixes for runtime ownership, teardown and dispatch #120 test items behindservicesandqueue-messenger.anchor_abort_attach_handler(Weak<AnchorManager>)andregister_handlers.mux_onlyloop with the fix(velo): review fixes for runtime ownership, teardown and dispatch #120 version of the final-drop test.fix(streaming): keep abort-attach idempotent after final dropchanges_anchor_abort_attachfromErrtoOkwhen the manager is gone.
