Summary

• Preserve the original bytes when an existing daily index contains invalid encoding or malformed front matter.
• Return an explicit index-refresh error instead of replacing a damaged derived index.
• Propagate that error through daily writes, automatic memory, resource processing and dream extraction without deleting or rolling back durable source notes.
• Cover malformed indexes, byte-identical preservation, recovery after repair, repeated rebuilds and higher-level response handling.

Validation

• Python 3.12: 383 passed, 52 skipped across daily steps, listing and links, frontmatter, file-store consistency, automatic dream, image resources and background-memory tests.
• Python compilation, focused Ruff correctness checks and git diff --check passed.

Scope

Changes are restricted to daily-index refresh and its immediate callers and regression tests. No dependencies, configuration defaults or unrelated subsystems have changed.
