Retire completed worktrees with exact merged-PR retention proof #5474
Description
Continue the maintainer-requested reduction of completed Cave branches/worktrees without losing active or recovery work.
Scope for the next bounded proof: .worktrees/issue-5462-research-reader / fix/issue-5462-research-reader at c2f76e4 (merged #5463), .worktrees/5471-discord-presence-brand / fix/5471-discord-presence-brand at 6e8fb2d (merged #5472), and the newly completed Tailscale unit at ac92a47 (merged #5465). Local cleanup only; remote deletions are not included.
Actor: Cody, current branch-curation continuation. Inventory: 14 worktrees and 14 local branches. Shared main stayed untouched. Detailed local inventory: /tmp/cave-curation-2026-09-19.md and /tmp/cave-curation-2026-09-19-worktrees.json.
Primary blocker: complete current retention/ownership/runtime and ignored-state proof is not established. The Research guard preflight refused because the same-name remote branch is gone. Exact refs/pull/5463/head and refs/pull/5472/head advertise the expected OIDs, so future proof should use the supported exact merged-PR retention mode. No guard bypass or removal occurred.
Preserve foreign locks and dirty work (drain override, iOS integration, GitHub activity), live #5464 orphaned-CSS work, draft #5468 Chat work, and uncertain iOS/5429/Copilot recovery units. A local SAFE-RETIRE label is not ownership clearance.
Next: establish repository-scoped runtime ownership coverage, inspect and classify ignored artifacts/recovery roots, acquire the local maintenance lease, and run a fresh bounded branch-curator proof using exact merged-PR retention before removing any candidate. No code worktree is needed for this audit; no Project status was changed.

Surface claim file has a single unrelated 2026-09-17 claim expired under the documented two-hour TTL; preserve the file. Refresh ownership/PR/workflow/process/ref/dirty/recovery proofs immediately before each removal. The old #5464 merged slice is distinct from the still-active issue-5464-report-css worktree, which remains untouched.
Next: verify each candidate and retire only successful proofs, then continue the remaining work toward the four-worktree target.

CovenWiki was preserved because its six historical
.playwright-cliconsole/snapshot files are not policy-disposable. Continuing the same authorized reduction goal in a new local-only batch: CovenWiki at 59213d1 (#5466), old dead-interface slice at 3a90224 (#5469), and iOS server-row work at 252dc23 (#5470 / canonical #5430 now closed). Preserve CovenWiki browser evidence byte-for-byte under ~/.coven/cave/worktree-archives/2026-09-20/5440-covenwiki-render before retiring that checkout. Batch 2 removed CovenWiki and the old dead-interface slice, taking the count to 9. CovenWiki's six historical browser logs/snapshots were relocated intact to ~/.coven/cave/worktree-archives/2026-09-20/5440-covenwiki-render/.playwright-cli with a SHA-256 manifest. The server-row preflight found one older recovery commit, b000782, outside the merged-head lineage; no removal occurred for that candidate. Its old implementation is being retained under exact remote tag refs/tags/retention/issue-5430-pre-rebase-20260920 before a fresh proof. This retention copy is part of the authorized cleanup, not a new implementation or remote deletion.

The unfinished orphaned-CSS outcome remains open on #5464; this empty checkout is not completion evidence and can be recreated when implementation resumes. Preserve all named branches. Non-disposable historical artifacts (the detached checkout's empty .tmp directory) will be retained under ~/.coven/cave/worktree-archives/2026-09-20 with manifests. No foreign lock is removed in this batch. Fresh local lease, exact owner/runtime/ref/recovery proofs and strict guard remain required.

Local branch refs retained. Non-disposable artifacts archived with SHA-256 manifests under /Users/buns/.coven/cave/worktree-archives/2026-09-20. All transactions used the local maintenance lease, current ownership/runtime/CI/recovery proof, and strict worktree guard; no forced removal.
Remaining planned candidates: deliver #5473 and retire its checkout; archive the superseded clean iOS baseline checkout from closed PR #5321, retaining branch 6aa9265 and all native evidence. Additional original iOS recovery commit 3513aeb is now retained at verified remote tag retention/issue-5292-original-baseline-20260920. Disposition is PRESERVE recovery branch; retire only its clean checkout. This is a scoped exception to routine merged-work retirement: PR #5321 is closed unmerged and still carries its draft flag, with an explicit owner decision that its pre-chat-only instrumentation is superseded. It will not be reopened or merged. Issue #5292 remains open for a new baseline; dirty related integration checkout stays untouched.
Source tip retained on the exact same remote branch; recovery 3513aeb at remote tag retention/issue-5292-original-baseline-20260920; partial merge c393cf8 at wip-archive/4vi9i-partial-main-merge-2026-09-17. Cody bounded manual retirement batch 5 follows Val’s explicit commit/push/merge-then-remove instruction and current below-five-worktrees target. Exact candidate .worktrees/issue-5473-github-activity, branch perf/issue-5473-github-activity, head 99f5be8. PR #5475 merged normally as 5ef9b2b after all exact-head checks and independent/Copilot review.
This session owns and completed the formerly dirty patch. The automatic 2026-09-19 dirty-preservation lock can now be released only while the checkout remains clean at that exact head. Immediate post-delivery retirement follows the explicit merge-and-remove sequence rather than the routine three-hour cooldown; the exception is limited to this session’s exact commit/reflog transition ffc8f60 -> 99f5be8. Other recent activity, foreign locks, ownership drift, or missing retention still stop cleanup. No branch deletion. Retention is the exact merged PR head and retained local branch; all older recovery records must prove reachable.
Acquire the local maintenance lease, re-read ownership/runtime/PR/CI state, require strict worktree guard before artifact cleanup and immediately before unforced removal, and verify path/registration absence and retained exact OIDs. Completed Val’s current worktree target: 14 -> 4 registered worktrees, including primary. Ten checkouts removed, all postconditions verified. Primary remains clean and unchanged at ffc8f60; origin/main contains the delivered PR #5475 at 5ef9b2b.
Retired checkouts: Research #5462, Discord #5471, Tailscale #5438, CovenWiki #5440, merged dead-interface slice #5464, server-row #5430, empty CSS checkout #5464, detached device-policy checkout, superseded iOS baseline PR #5321, and delivered GitHub activity #5473. All local branch refs retained. Remote source/recovery refs retained; no remote deletion. dolt_remote_info remains untouched.
Non-disposable artifacts are preserved under /Users/buns/.coven/cave/worktree-archives/2026-09-20 with SHA-256 manifests; iOS includes all 20 native artifact roots. Continuation audit for Val's current branch/worktree reduction request. Current inventory: 45 local branches and 25 registered worktrees (including primary);
pnpm wt:statusreports one local-state SAFE-RETIRE checkout but that is not deletion authority. The six exact local-only branch refs from the earlier approved batch are still present at their recorded OIDs: fix/issue-5822-macos-release-entitlements aca3241, fix/issue-5888-sidebar-cleanup 6954717, fix/issue-5924-reader-width 95a2932, fix/issue-5934-activity-updates cbf68a9, fix/search-field-layout e7975d5, phase0/meta-run-least-privilege 738e09b. Their worktrees are absent. Val approved renewed local-only cleanup of exactly these six refs in the current chat, conditional on fresh proof. REST PR details confirm each exact head was merged to main; the recorded remote retention tags still advertise the matching commits.No deletion was attempted: branch-curator's normative deletion proof requires paginated cross-repository associated-PR and head-search GraphQL coverage. The current session's REST-only GitHub preference and unavailable GraphQL quota prevent that proof, and the contract says preserve on incomplete coverage. The prior authorization does not replace the missing safety proof. No lease or strict guard was invoked, and no local or remote refs, worktrees, claims, or locks changed. Release #5851 remains active and its worktrees are untouched.
Next: obtain an approved REST-equivalent proof path or GraphQL coverage, then refresh ownership/runtime/recovery evidence, acquire the maintenance lease, run the strict guard, and compare-delete only any exact ref that passes. Preserve all six until that gate is satisfied.

git show-ref --verifyprobes. This session did not invoke the maintenance lease, strict guard,git worktree remove, orgit update-ref -d; the reduction was performed concurrently. I have not found a new #5474 receipt yet and am not attributing its proof or safety to this session. Remote refs/tags and other worktrees remain outside my cleanup actions. Retire this open-ended maintenance tracker from the priority queue. Live pnpm wt:status now reports 16 registered units, below the 28 budget, and no local-state retirement candidates; surviving dirty/locked/owned work is protected. Historical retirement receipts remain here. No worktree, branch, lock, claim or recovery artifact is removed by this triage. Reopen only for a concrete capacity/recovery problem with exact scope and fresh owner/retention proof. This does not claim all historical cleanup targets were achieved.
Disposition: not planned / deferred under Val's current backlog-pruning request. Original messages, owners, approval requirements and artifacts remain preserved. Closing is reversible by reopening this issue. No competing implementation or cleanup is started.

Recurring hygiene on Val's machine (2026-10-14). The local LaunchAgent
com.opencoven.coven-cave-worktree-sweep(03:30, 09:30, 15:30, 21:30) had run 43 times since #5399 doing nothing: its shim exec'd the tombstonedscripts/worktree-sweep.shand exited 2. The shim (kept by name becauseCovenCaveSweep.appholds the Full Disk Access grant) now runs~/.claude/scripts/coven-cave-hygiene.mjs, which honours the curator policy that there is no automatic retirement:git fetch --prune origin(remote-tracking branches only;fetch.pruneTagsstaysfalse, so archive and retention tags are kept), then classify every worktree and local branch as RETIRE-READY (merged PR at the exact head, or head onorigin/main), PARK-READY (clean tree idle past 6 h whose head equals its open or draft PR branch on origin), DELETE-READY (branch-only, head retained on origin), NEEDS-OWNER (dirty, locked, or local-only work idle past 6 h, with exact dirty paths), or ACTIVE.
