SDKS-4577

Description

When the server marks the username field with webauthn in autocompleteValues, passkey suggestions now surface inline from the keyboard (conditional mediation), with a "Use a passkey" button as the modal fallback.

  • NameCallback: when the field is marked for conditional mediation, it renders View-backed, since pendingGetCredentialRequest is a View-only androidx API (there's no Compose equivalent); otherwise it stays a regular OutlinedTextField.
  • FidoAuthentication: creates the pending request and delivers the assertion when a suggestion is picked; keeps the modal button as fallback and re-arms the pending request after a failed modal attempt. Falls back to direct modal auth when the OS can't do conditional mediation.
  • ContinueNode — owns the shared pending request and cancels it when the node leaves composition, so an abandoned ceremony can't submit after the screen is gone.
  • Crash fix: the post-splash theme was Theme.MaterialComponents, so inflating the Material3 TextInputLayout crashed with Error inflating class com.google.android.material.textfield.TextInputLayout. The theme is now Theme.Material3.DayNight.NoActionBar, matching pingsampleapp.
Before - Auto popup for passkey After - Passkey option provided

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • WebAuthn sign-in can now appear as a conditional option alongside the username field, allowing users to authenticate without selecting a separate sign-in button.
    • The WebAuthn username field supports autofill and retains entered text between authentication steps.
    • A manual “Use a passkey” option remains available when supported, including when conditional sign-in is unavailable.
  • Updates
    • Updated Android authentication components to newer versions for improved passkey support.

📝 Walkthrough

The Android Journey sample adds conditional WebAuthn support for username fields and FIDO authentication. It connects pending authentication requests to WebAuthn fields, supports modal passkey authentication, and updates SDK versions and the splash theme.

Changes: Conditional WebAuthn authentication

Layer / File(s) Summary
WebAuthn username field
android/kotlin-journey/journey/src/main/java/com/pingidentity/samples/journeyapp/journey/callback/NameCallback.kt, android/kotlin-journey/journey/src/main/res/layout/view_webauthn_username_field.xml, android/kotlin-journey/journey/src/main/res/values/themes.xml
NameCallback uses an Android Material view for fields marked with "webauthn". The view applies pending requests, updates the callback value, and re-arms autofill after focus returns. Other fields retain the Compose text field.
Pending request wiring
android/kotlin-journey/journey/src/main/java/com/pingidentity/samples/journeyapp/journey/callback/ContinueNode.kt
ContinueNode stores and cancels pending authentication requests. It passes the request to NameCallback and supplies FidoAuthentication with conditional-target state.
Conditional and modal authentication
android/kotlin-journey/journey/src/main/java/com/pingidentity/samples/journeyapp/journey/callback/FidoAuthentication.kt, android/kotlin-journey/gradle/libs.versions.toml
FidoAuthentication creates and observes pending requests when conditional mediation is available. It provides modal authentication, manual passkey selection, fallback handling, and result processing. The Ping Identity SDK changes to 2.3.0-beta1, and play-services-auth changes to 1.6.0.

The sample's conditional passkey flow looks sound. One narrow edge case remains: two very fast taps on "Use a passkey" could start two passkey prompts and submit the login step twice. Adding a quick in-progress check fixes it, and the change is fine to merge with that follow-up.

6-6: 🎯 Functional Correctness

The available evidence does not establish that 2.3.0-beta1 is incorrect or that a compatible stable release exists. The cited official release history covers a different Ping Android SDK and does not resolve the com.pingidentity.sdks artifacts used here.

⚠️ Unverified finding
Verification ran but could not confirm this finding. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.

Add autofill hints to the passkey username field.

The EditText has no android:autofillHints="username" and no importantForAutofill. Autofill providers and Credential Manager use these attributes to classify the field. Without them, inline suggestions can fail to appear on some providers. Add android:autofillHints="username".

val performModalAuthentication: suspend () -> Unit = {
modalInProgress = true

🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Check modalInProgress inside performModalAuthentication, not only in the button state.

The button uses enabled = !modalInProgress, but modalInProgress becomes true only when the launched coroutine starts. rememberCoroutineScope() does not dispatch immediately. Two taps in the same frame can therefore launch two coroutines before recomposition disables the button. Both ceremonies then run. Each one can call currentOnCompleted(), which submits the node twice. Each one can also call pendingAuthenticate and publish its own pending request.

The coroutines run one after another on the main thread. An early return before the first suspension point therefore makes the guard atomic.
