Paint over anything in a photo and it is gone. Photobombers, wires, trash, watermarks. Runs on your Mac.
TouchRetouch, Cleanup.pictures and the "magic eraser" features in subscription editors all run the same idea: an inpainting model fills the hole. Erase uses LaMa, the open model behind most of them, ported to Core ML and run on your GPU. No subscription, no upload, no watermark on the output.
Table of contents
- Paint and erase: brush over the object, press Erase, done in about a second
- Full resolution: the fill is generated on a crop around your mask and pasted back, so a 40 MP photo stays 40 MP
- Repeat as needed: erase several things in turn, undo any step, compare with Before
- Reads JPEG, PNG, HEIC, TIFF, RAW previews; exports PNG or JPEG
- Private: the model ships inside the app. No network at all
Signed with a Developer ID and notarized by Apple, so it opens like any other Mac app.
Download Erase.zip from the latest release, unzip, move Erase.app to Applications.
Requires macOS 14 Sonoma or newer. Apple silicon recommended; the model runs on the GPU.
- Drop a photo on the window.
- Paint over what should disappear. Use a brush a little larger than the object, including its shadow.
- Press Erase (⌘↩). Paint again for the next thing. ⌘Z undoes.
- Export as PNG or JPEG.
How big an object can it remove? LaMa is built for large masks. A person in a street scene works; half the picture does not.
Why do results look smeared sometimes? Complex textures behind the object (faces, text, patterns) are guesses. Erase a bit at a time and include shadows and reflections in the mask.
Why is the app 200 MB? That is the model. Everything else is 1 MB.
