The zone was configured by hand and through the API. .cloudflare/ now holds it as Terraform (cloudflare/cloudflare ~> 5.26) with state in the private R2 bucket chia1104-terraform-state: - the five zone entrypoint rulesets (custom and managed WAF, rate limiting, single redirects, cache rules), keeping each rule's id as its ref - all 25 DNS records - the zone settings that differ from Cloudflare's defaults The bypass token in the two WAF skip rules comes from the sensitive variable cf_bypass_token instead of the source. Already applied: 39 resources imported, and the two firewall rulesets rewritten with unchanged values; a follow-up plan reports no changes. 🌐 Web query:
Cloudflare firewall rules filter language header comparison empty string semantics
💡 Result:
**Short answer:** an empty-string comparison is not a reliable way to mean “header is missing.”
Cloudflare exposes request headers as a **map from header name to an array of values**. A present header with an empty value is distinct from an absent header; an absent map key is a *missing value*. ([github.com](https://github.com/cloudflare/cloudflare-docs/blob/production/src/content/docs/ruleset-engine/rules-language/values.mdx))
For example:
```text
# Any value for this header is exactly empty
any(http.request.headers["x-example"][*] == "")
# Header exists (even if its value is empty)
len(http.request.headers["x-example"]) >= 0
# Header is absent
not len(http.request.headers["x-example"]) >= 0
```
The last two follow Cloudflare’s documented missing-map-key examples; the first uses its documented header-array comparison pattern. **Inference:** the empty-string test matches an actual empty value, not absence. ([github.com](https://github.com/cloudflare/cloudflare-docs/blob/production/src/content/docs/ruleset-engine/rules-language/values.mdx))
Header values preserve whitespace, so a value containing spaces is not the empty string. Comparisons are case-sensitive. ([developers.cloudflare.com](https://developers.cloudflare.com/ruleset-engine/rules-language/fields/reference/http.request.headers.values/))

Add a non-empty validation constraint to cf_bypass_token variable.
The cf_bypass_token variable accepts an empty string with no validation. When following .env.global.example with TF_VAR_cf_bypass_token= (blank), both WAF bypass rules expand to any(http.request.headers["x-cf-bypass-token"][*] eq ""). This filter expression matches requests that include the x-cf-bypass-token header with an empty value. An attacker can send x-cf-bypass-token: (with empty value) to bypass WAF protections, directly contradicting the documented purpose of a secret token exemption.

Verify unfurler identity before skipping the challenge rules.
An unauthenticated client can send User-Agent: Discordbot with an HTTP/1.1 GET / request to chia1104.dev. This request passes the preceding scanner rule and matches this expression without cf_bypass_token. The ruleset = "current" action then skips both the datacenter-ASN and non-browser challenges. A client-controlled header therefore disables these two controls. (developers.cloudflare.com)
Require verified bot identity, such as cf.client.bot, or validated provider source addresses before granting this exemption. The first rule already exempts verified bots. (developers.cloudflare.com)
