MongoDB 9.0 is generally available, including on Atlas (9.0.2 is the current production release), but Parse Server does not support it yet:
CI only tests MongoDB 7.0, 8.0 and 8.3, so compatibility with 9.0 is not verified.
Parse Server pins the MongoDB Node.js driver at mongodb@7.1.0, which MongoDB's client compatibility table lists as not tested against MongoDB 9.0. Driver 7.6+ is the first fully compatible range.
Some specs hardcode server behavior that changed in MongoDB 9, so the suite does not pass on 9.0 as-is.
Feature / Enhancement Description
Add MongoDB 9 support in a single change:
Add MongoDB 9.0.2 to the CI test matrix and to the README compatibility table.
Upgrade the mongodb driver to 7.7.0, the latest 7.x release, fully compatible with MongoDB 9.0, 8.0 and 7.0. This is the same major version, so no API change is expected for the storage adapter.
Update the specs that depend on server behavior that changed in MongoDB 9 (maxTimeMS error message and timing of server-side JavaScript, geoNear "no index" error format).
Example Use Case
A Parse Server deployment runs on a MongoDB Atlas cluster that gets upgraded from 8.0 to 9.0. Parse Server keeps working, with a driver officially listed as compatible with 9.0 and a test suite that runs against 9.0.
Alternatives / Workarounds
Applications can force the driver version with npm overrides, but Parse Server then runs with a driver version that its own test suite does not cover.
