Type ALT or Option to open the menu

That was my first reflex: type ALT to open the menu and it didn't work.
There are no underlines showing the shortcuts for menus like in MS-DOS (FILE had the F underlined). That would also help.

It works for me. Press Alt (or Option on macOS) followed by the underlined character to open the respective menu.
