How do you run a dependency with an argument?

build target:
    echo {{ target }} built

install: build install

error: Recipe `install` depends on itself

This doesn't work because it thinks build install is 2 dependencies, whereas I'd like it to be interpreted as the dependency build with argument target=install. Can this be done without having to recursively invoke just?

You can use parenthesis around the dependency and its arguments:

install: (build install)

Is there a way to run a shell command in the dependency list as well?

Not directly, you would have to make a recipe that runs the command, then add that recipe as a dependency.
