[Bug] Feeds are not automatically refreshing in the background

Hello,

Your second screenshot shows that notifications are disabled in Android. PipePipe uses the same background task for new stream notifications and automatic feed updates, so the feed cannot be checked periodically while notifications are disabled.

Please tap Settings in the message at the bottom, allow notifications for PipePipe, then return to PipePipe and turn New streams notifications off and on again.

The Feed update threshold set to 5 minutes does not mean that the feed refreshes every 5 minutes. The background check is controlled by Checking frequency, which is currently set to 1 hour in your screenshot. Android may also delay that check a little.

Could u try this and tell us if the “Feed last updated” time changes?

Thank you! I am going to test with notifications about new stream updates being enabled. Generally, I wish to have the feed updated in the background without receiving notifications about it. Is this possible for the future?

This is not possible currently because both features use the same background task.

A separate background refresh option could be added in the future. For now, let’s see whether enabling notifications fixes it and what @InfinityLoop1308 thinks about separating them :)

Even with notifications enabled, it is certainly not updating hourly as scheduled.

Last run was 5 hours ago.

Thx u for testing. I use a Google Pixel myself, which is why the yellow battery icon caught my attention. Battery Saver is enabled in both screenshots, and it can stop apps from refreshing in the background.

U do not need to keep Battery Saver disabled permanently. For this test, please:

1. Turn off Battery Saver temporarily.
2. Open Settings > Apps > PipePipe > App battery usage > Allow background usage and select Unrestricted.
3. Return to PipePipe and turn New streams notifications off and on again.

Then leave PipePipe in the background for a few hours and check the last update time. If it works, u can enable Battery Saver again and test whether the Unrestricted setting is enough. The 1-hour interval may still be delayed slightly by Android.

Thanks! Just switched to unrestricted mode. I'm on energy saving mode all the time because otherwise my battery drains way too quickly on my Google Pixel 8. Other apps such as WhatsApp, Signal or AntennaPod work just fine with refreshing in the background while on energy saving mode and with keeping those apps on battery mode optimised. Now that I'm thinking, can it update the feeds live in the moment when I'm opening an individual or the aggregated feed?

PipePipe does not support this yet. At the moment, opening an individual or aggregated feed only displays the data already stored locally. Automatically checking for outdated subscriptions when opening the feed could be a useful improvement :)

Also, I have a Pixel 8 too. My battery life used to be pretty bad, but some time ago I stopped constantly swiping apps away from the recent apps screen, and honestly it has been better since then. Just my own experience, of course :)

I have opened a new issue for this feature request: #2772

By the way, I never swipe apps away and yet battery life is very poor. Thus I pretty much need energy saving mode turned on all the time.
